How to repair water damaged drywall in one day!!

- On this water damage repair project, the home owners had already removed the drywall. But they did not cut it out square or on a stud.
So, the first thing I had to do was cut the drywall square so it would be an easier and tight fight of the new drywall. Next I added a wood 1" x 2" furring strip to be able to secure the wall board since the it was cut just past the original framing of the home.

Can you please do another video where you actually show HOW to do the repair from Start to Finish? Thank you :)
Please because I don't have 2500 to pay someone
I'm about to do some of this. I'm sure I can do it, but it will probably be really crappy because I've never done it before. That's the thing with people working on their own homes. There's just no experience...no way to really practice. I can watch all the youtube videos in the world and they DO help for sure, but it's not the same thing as doing it. What I appreciated about this video was that it was mostly real-time.
I think I'm going to knock a couple holes in my garage wall and repair them before I do what needs to be done inside the house. I'm sure that sounds stupid, but I can't think of any other way to get some experience without screwing up a real living space.
{Your Vids VS Other's} - I'm getting ready to repair a 12x12 square In the last 25 mins I've watched 5 videos about repairing drywall damage. After the 5th video I still felt like I didn't have any new information. Luckily I clicked on your video next cuz in just one video you explained and showed everything I needed. But most importantly I learned about technique, skill, what products works best, and the "how to's". Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Alot of people are complaining about installing insulation and drywall. There are hundreds of videos for that. This was exactly what I needed. Because there are not alot of videos on drywall replacement of this size. Thank you sir
WOW! You are really talented. It was a pleasure just watching you do that job. I live in a house full of horrible spackle jobs from former homeowners and contractors. I am trying to fix all of their mistakes.
I've been a handyman for the last 6 years and have tried doing drywall patch work like this a number of times and just recently decided to stop doing it. I never seemed to get the hang of it. When completed, it always looked like a first grader did the job. And I didn't know you could do all this in one day.
This was the first video that popped up when I searched how to replace drywall. Step 1: replace drywall. OK THANKS!
Such an amazing video. I love to watch all your video. They are super amazing and informative at the same time. Keep posting more!
What part of 'how to' cut and install the drywall did I miss?
Man you made this look so easy. I know from trying that I am seeing a lot of experience and skill. Mine would never looks quite so good. But, your video is awesome! Expertly done. Whew!
Hi Delicia. Thanks for the kind words. I've been drywall contractor and painting contractor for over 20 years. So, I better be pretty good at it or I should look for a new job. Lol. Take care, -Paul
Believe me I meant every word. Keep those videos coming. Know anything about matching old paint? Any trick to not having to repaint a whole room? Just thought I'd ask.
Delicia Holl Thank you! Yes I do know about matching old paint. If you can get a chip of the old paint off of an inconspicuous area of the wall color (say from a closet or somewhere like that). Then bring to wherever you're going to get your paint. They should be able to get real close. Then you should paint the entire wall in question from corner to corner. If the paint match is really close you might be able to lightly feather the paint out from the area that needs too be painted instead of painting the whole wall.
If you can't get a chip just get a few of the sample color chips from the store and get that and go from corner to corner. Hope that helps, -Paul
Take a clean section of the old paint to the paint store and they can computer match it, but it needs to be the best sample you can get.
Thanks for posting this video!
How did you cut the dry wall square or so straight horizontally and vertically?
And how did you cut out the hole in the dry wall at the precise position for the electric socket?
Impressive sir, and very helpful. Thank you!!
I appreciate that Herb!🙏 Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! -Paul
Dam u r pretty good and fast. Looks great.
I have to do the same thing around my basement. Do i need to install insulation or just patch the drywall? Do u have to install ferring strips?
Mesmerizing. Should be ASMR. Could not look away.😊
Hey De!💥👊🏻 That’s awesome. I’ve actually had several viewers mention ASMR before on some of my videos. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing my friend!😎 -Paul
Hey how do I spackle 1 ft Flood Cuts but the new drywall pieces seem to sink in deeper than original wall? Not exactly flush at seem? Looks like both are 1/2 inch drywall. Not sure what the deal is
Did you in up installing insullation before drywalling? Just wondering if maybe you didn’t because of flooding issues.
Somthing about watching this was surprisingly relaxing.
I think I could learn more from Lawrence from Office Space than this.
thanks for the great video it really helped me out a lot.
That's awesome James! Be sure to subscribe to my Channel to keep up with all of my latest videos.Here-> ruclips.net/user/PeckDrywallPainting Take care, -Paul
Thank you so much for just doing it instead of talk-talk-talk!
Awesome work! Did you just tape the middle corner with paper tape? Did any of the other flat areas get tape? Or did I miss something? Thanks 😊
Pretty work!
I appreciate it Pete! I like those small jobs. In and out the same day!🤑
Did the corner look wavy at the very end or was it just a camera effect?
Is the second coat the wall primer?
hi I enjoy doing little projects around the house also for others I get a great thrill doing projects on my Own! That driver is so cool! I need tools but I need alot of different Tools! would live to have and try out different projects ! Girl power!
Girls rule and Boys drool. That's what I always tell my daughter. Oh. I also tell her boys are stinky... LOL.
Take care Leanne, -Paul
What kind of treatment did you use on 2x4s or did you just paint them white?
i have a window sill and they flood cut under it. there’s like 2 inches of drywall under the sill and it’s about 16” off the floor. Remove sill and casing or how would you patch that? or can you leave casing and sill attached and just butt up under the 5/8” gap?
I wanted to see how the drywall was “squared up.” Did you use some type of a straight edge? I had a minor flood from a pipe leak two years ago, probably no more than a half inch of water, but the house has had a mildew smell ever since. I’m planning to remove the baseboards and cut-off the lower 12” of drywall and replace it. I clicked this video because I wanted to see how that’s done. 😢
Should the new Sheetrock be flush with the old piece above it since it is not a smooth factory butt joint?
Single mother of 3 .This was so soothing to watch. lol. Now I shall try. Any tips for a 1st timer?
This is great, but I really needed to see how you fixed the drywall before smoothing on the mud. And what about the insulation?
Insulation is only for exterior butt walls and by walls. Unless you wish to semi soundproof rooms. Then you could add insulation to the interior walls. But otherwise it isn't necessary.
Exactly! That is exactly why I clicked on this video.
What about mold removal and insulation? Interesting but short of the really tuff repair. Is there another video? If not, do one! Thanks.
What's that white paint on studs?
do you do house calls to Iowa?
Paul what do you recommend? I've been getting jobs where I need to do a lot of patching or skimming ect. I keep my pan super clean and my knifes. I always seems to get these little 2 inch lines here and there in the compound. It is more often with hot mud and not as much or never with all purpose mud? Do you run into this or what do you think?
+cwrowe I wonder if all the hot mud powder is not getting mixed up in the corners of your mud pan real good? Then when you're applying the mud it gets intermixed with the good mud?
Would love to see the corner finishing as that's always tricky. And really curious about the orange peel finishing?
Hey Jenn, Yes I have video of me doing some inside corners. I just need to edit it and put it together so I can post it here on youtube. You should Subscribe to my channel so you don't miss the finishing an inside corner video. ruclips.net/user/PeckDrywallPainting Take care, -Paul
Jenn, Here's a couple drywall taping of an inside corner videos that I told you I would post. How to use a Drywall Corner Tool- ruclips.net/video/Fd4tsg3s4Ec/видео.html and How to repair drywall corner tape after DIY wallpaper removal ruclips.net/video/OuHazwZACJU/видео.html
Firing strips to mount the drywall on the studs?
Mad skills
Bro this is super helpful
Thank you for the kind words!
Yeah.
I guess who ever I was responding to disappeared... Oh well thanks for watching my video everyone! :-D
How high up from the floor do you reccomend cutting and replacing when only the bottom few inches of the drywall was damaged?
Go up 2 feet and cut then you can cut the new sheetrock in half to install.
Good shit!
Did you replace the wall insulation before closing up? We’re having a basement flood cut repaired and our contractor recommend not replacing the insulation that was removed.
Hi Jean, no. Because there never was any insulation in the wall in the first place. Your contractor is probably right about that. I hope this helps.👍🏻 Thanks so much for watching and subscribing my friend!😎 -Paul
Can you skim coat with the 20 mud?
Do you have to clean your pan in between when using the hot mud. I try using it and end up with it drying up and they I have to spend a good chunk of time cleaning it out. Also did you sand in between each pass
Sarah, Yes with the hot mud you definitely need to clean the mud pan between each batch of mud. Try and get the hot mud out of the pan before it gets hard. You should be able to feel the mud start to change when it's about to set up. Hope that helps, -Paul
What's the reason for getting the spackle on the knife, putting it on the top of the can and then getting the spackle on the knife again?
The joint compound must be laid in a certain way on the knife so it can be properly applied on the wall.
This is like watching magic. Pretty cool.
Thanks man!
Hey how much water do you typically add to a box of top coat mud? Also, what PSI do you run for orange peel on hopper? Im tackling a project and could use some insight, thanks man! You do great work.
Jack, I try and get orange peel mix to a pretty soupy consistency for a typical orange peel texture. I try and start out with a 1/4 gallon of water for a box of joint compound and adjust from there. Up to probably 1/2 a gallon of water. Each batch varies on how much water you add because it's not always the same consistency when it comes from the factory. I prefer USG all purpose joint compound that has the green lid. PsI should be pretty high like 110 psi and up. Again all of this depends on the variation of orange peel texture you're trying to achieve. Hope that helps, -Paul
I have same project though with knock down. Would you lay a skim coat base first then knock down over that? On the patch joint I have one spot where the existing l knockdown is very thick. Should I just lay it on thick on the patch too?
Beautiful job! My husband and I have to do the same thing but we're very intimidated by it.
+Rosemary Padrick Thank you so much for watching!👍🏻 Repairing drywall can be intimidating. But, with the right instruction and tools anybody can do it. Let me know if you have any questions along the way and I'll be happy to answer them or maybe even direct you one of my related videos. Hope that helps and good luck! -Paul
my best advice is no short cuts
you use a 12 inch knife the whole time?
The only advice I'd give is when using mesh tape, you should wipe it tight into the seam before actually costing it. I do a lot of repair work and 90% of the cracks I fix are because the finisher failed to do this.
I totally agree Robert! I appreciate the feedback!👍🏻 Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!😎 -Paul
Paul, why do you like to use the mesh tape VS. wetting paper tape and setting it in the hot mud?
+Daniel Puterbaugh I think I can get a flatter and stronger repair with the fiberglass mesh drywall tape. It's much thinner than the paper tape and you don't need to bed it in the mud which makes the paper tape sit higher right off the get go.
aww I see! That does make sense and if I remember correctly you only use the mesh tape with hot mud? Also whats your trick with the mesh tape, I feel like when ever I go to mud mesh I always have trouble with the mesh starting to stick through and I have to put more mud on it and sand it down more than with paper tape.
+Daniel Puterbaugh What I do when applying the fiberglass mesh tape is, I try and stick it to the new drywall of the seam first. Then I will press the fiber tape down on the painted surface starting in the middle and going out one way at a time.
If it's a real dusty surface, I'll give it a quick wipe and then hit the area with a spray can of Kilz to seal it. The fiber tape sticks perfectly to the primed area that's for sure. -Paul
+Paul Peck Thank you for the information! Really like your videos I will keep watching them to learn more.
+Daniel Puterbaugh Thank you! I try to post a new video at least once a week. Sometimes more if I'm on an unique or interesting project. -Paul
You should never pre-fill or tape with easysand always use durabond which is also made by USG.
I have the EXACT same project to tackle at my home. What did you charge the homeowner for this job? Just trying to get an idea of what it might cost me if I end up deciding to hire someone. GREAT video by the way. Thanks in advance 👍🏽
Did you ever get an answer to your question I'm about to do the same thing and I don't know what to charge I'm not trying to lowball myself though I know better than to do that but it's technically My girl's family I was thinking 800 materials included and painted what do you think? I feel like that's still low actually cuz it's not a big deal but it's also kind of time-consuming
@@johngaudi8546800 is outrageously high. It shouldn't take more than a couple of hours and the materials for this are cheap
What about sanding?
If 1 is the easiest and 10 is the hardest: what would you say your pressure is on your knife when applying the mud?
Pressure at 5 with a consistent glide and steady pull.
What if only like a half inch of the drywall got wet on the bottom?
This is what I'm wondering too! Like if you had a flood and only the very bottom edge of the drywall needs to to be repaired or replaced.
Hello, I came to watch the drywall being installed 😂… looks nice though…
No bueno
I like your professional job..👍Thank you so much..😊
+Monika S Thank you so much!👍🏻
You said in the beginning you were going to use match tape but nowhere in the video that I see you use mesh tape on the joints!
Incapsulated mold with the white paint and great job bro shot that
Appreciate it Nino!👍🏻 The homeowners had already primed the wall. As I recall the leak had happened months before I got called out to do the repair. I didn’t see any mold on it whatsoever. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! -Paul
Good video. Thanks!
Gilbert I appreciate the kind words! Take care, -Paul
Excellent video👍
Thanks CW!
Isn’t there another product besides drywall that does not rot when water touches it? Seems to me a better remedy is to put a 4 or 5 inch baseboard down, which would keep the drywall 4 or 5 inches off the floor. At least until the industry comes up with a wall covering that isn’t subject to mildew
I was disapointed with this video primarily because it was head-lined as "How to repair drywall" and there was NONE of that. 90% of the recording was you putting on mud, which I admired because you are quite good at it, and obviously enjoyed yourself. Still need help doing drywall though.
You didn't tape the joints? I couldn't tell :)
Jenn, Yes I used a fiberglass mesh tape on the drywall repair joints. I mention it in the video @ 00:42 and then if you look closely @ 1:17 you can see it at the first joint I start applying the quick setting type compound too. -Paul
you rock Lea!!!
Thank you!
could the joint compound be sanded if we"re not as skilled as you ?
+HIXMF Yes. You can use a drywall hand sander with #80 grit sandpaper for heavy sanding or #100 grit sandpaper for medium duty sanding or #120 grit sandpaper for light sanding. A sanding sponge with the same grit as previously mentioned will work as well. Hope that helps, -Paul
Nice work. Did you sponge sand at all before putting on the texture?
Thanks Eric! Yes I did hit the outer edge of the mud work and inside corner with one of those black 6" drywall sanding sponges. Take care, -Paul
you didnt explain anything but is no science installing drywalls
Thank you for this video
Thank you for this video! I have the same situation and felt overwhelmed on how to tackle this. I never thought about just cutting out a section of drywall.
I removed the baseboard on wall next to sliding door in basement becuase of a small mold and water leak. That exposed a section that was soaked and wet with some mold under neath carpet as well. I immediately cut out and cleaned the moldy area. I'm afraid to see what is behind the drywall and sheething. On top of that it has been raining nonstop and then went straight to snow!
Thanks again for the idea.
Sorry, you don t put tape before this plaster?
Yes of course. That would be silly not to use tape. I used a fiberglass mesh tape and 20 minute setting type joint compound on the drywall seams. I mention it in the video @ 00:42 and then if you look closely @ 1:17 you can see it at the first joint I start applying the quick setting type compound too. -Paul
Nice video bud!
I appreciate the kind words Scboy! Thank you, -Paul
You make it look so easy. Watch me mess up my wall.
nice you didnt show 2x4 and strips
WOW!! The drywall magically appeared from know where🥴. Amazing! Like when Trump said, "one day the invisible enemy"(covid)" will magically disappear"! 😮🤣🤣🤣
Why didn't you use tape
Why no tape ?
I used fiberglass mesh tape and hot mud on this project.👍🏻
Where's the joint tape?! That "beautiful" job will only crack and look like poo
🤣🤣🤣🤣 he didn’t even show us how to do it lol
You might as well rename this 10 minutes of slapping mud on the wall the part we wanted to see was the part you cut out everybody knows how to put mud on a wall 🤦🏻♂️
Your a dipshit
I am guessing that you decided to skip embedding tape (with the exception of the corner) in your joints to save time? Why risk the savings of 3$ for a roll of tape and a few moments to embed it just to waste a day having to come back and do it over? All joints should be taped to prevent cracking and to insure a solid joint, it may look OK now but IMO this is a bad way to do a professional job.
Actually all of the flats and butt joints have a self adhesive fiberglass mesh drywall tape applied to them. I always use paper tape in the angles for nice crisp corners even on one day repairs. I even say that I'm using fiberglass mesh tape in the video at 00:42 seconds. Trust me I Do Not cut corners. I take pride in my work just like you my friend. Take care, -Paul
You totally skipped the part I needed to learn.... ugh
That isn't how you do the job
Really? How would Jesus do it?
Very misleading title. Did not show repair at all.
That breathing was so cringe I had to back out bro I’m sorry
Haha.😂 Here’s an updated version of this video with less breathing and more information: ruclips.net/video/a8Q6isS3BkQ/видео.html Let me know what you think? -Paul
