    I know how the histogram works. But being only a casual photographer I can't remember having ever used it. I've nothing bad to say about it, but I've never felt I needed it. So for me personally there are other tools that seem much more helpful. Cameras, lenses, flashes, tripods, remote triggers, lens hoods, are all tools, and every one of them very useful, of course, but aside from these (and other) physical gadgets: In the film era I used colour correction filters a lot, so when it comes to tools built into a modern digital camera, my number one pick is Custom White Balance! I also used graduated filters, but not anymore. So my second pick is HDR! This can of course be done in several ways, and AEB is one that I know you use. And for candid portraits I love the flip-screen in combination with the totally silent electronic shutter, so that people don't know they're being photographed. (However, I tend to get better results by being far away and using my 55-250 mm tele-zoom).

    This is the most understandable and informative histogram video I've watched, and I have viewed every one I came across. I can stop now. Thank you.

    So glad you mentioned the live view histogram. I see too often people talking about the histogram on the display preview after taking the shot and not realizing they are looking at the embedded jpeg histogram. When I have the files on the computer, I like to use FastRawViewer which is one of the few viewers that allows me to look at raw files and the raw file histogram and even switch to the jpeg histogram for comparison to the differences.

    Thanks for the very useful info 😊, I have learnt alot from your vids and subscribed. Technical question, do most dslrs expose for the centre of the weighted average of
    the histogram values or the centre of the highest and lowest value?

    Thanks Ian, I found this video really helpful, I know I should be making a lot more use of the Histogram, particularly whilst out shoot and not just whilst in LRC, so this video has inspired me to make more use of the Histogram whilst out shooting. Ian ! This is an amazing video mate - I have not seen it so clearly and well explained anywhere. May offer a small suggestion? Exposure is suchba difficult term to understand for a beginner and it is used ubiquitously ; perhaps if you said something like "exposure tool" in the title many more people would watch (I confess I nearly skipped it but for my incredulity as to what might this tool could be).
    Many thanks for this video :)

    Must admit I've never really thought about histograms too much and usually get rid of them if I accidentally turn them on. But I am becoming more interested in them as a result of basic photo editing and seeing the effect they have.

    I think in some situations the histogram is the only tool a photographer can rely on. For example, I'm thinking about low contrast foggy scenes or bright white showy landscapes. All camera sensors can be easily fooled in these situations.

    Did you use a filter for that first waterfall image? Also, what did the histogram read prior to edit? I find on my XT3, without filters, it’s impossible to not blow the highlights if the sky is in frame. Any hint of sky and the histogram shoots up on the right hand side. Same goes if I’m shooting in the opposite direction to the sun. It’s been like that since I bought it 18 months ago and I’m beginning to think I might have a dodgy sensor. Either that or I just need to lower my expectations of what Fuji’s sensor is capable of seeing, and perhaps go back to my Nikon DSLR for any outside photography. Interestingly I don’t recall having the same problem on my X100s...

    • @ian_worth
      @ian_worth  3 года назад +1

      No I didn't use a filter, just exposed for the highlights, that's why the hills and mountains are very dark. The xt3 has a decent amount of dynamic range so maybe you have a faulty camera, maybe send it in for an inspection / repair. 👍

    • @chrisjames1924
      @chrisjames1924 3 года назад

      @@ian_worth Thanks Ian, I emailed Fuji as you suggested and they got back to me straight away, offering to have it inspected and repaired if necessary. Such a relief, should have done it ages ago. I’m actually kinda hoping there is a fault....as the alternative - that I’m a clueless photographer - would be way too much to handle.

    Here’s an idea: ditch the histogram and learn how to accurately meter any scene under any lighting conditions. Then, you won’t need “tools” like this.

    • @davidwamback9000
      @davidwamback9000 3 года назад

      Ansel Adams would have really appreciated the histogram. I can remember using a spot meter with the zone system and adjusting film development then burning and dodging to get the results I wanted. Now we have a this wonderful tool to use in the digital darkroom. But I do believe every photographer should understand the zone system to truly understand and better use the histogram.

    • @stevenbridgland3727
      @stevenbridgland3727 3 года назад

      @@davidwamback9000 we will never know if AA would have liked or approved of the histogram. IMHO Its become a(nother) go to “lazy tool”. If you get exposure correct at the time of capture then you don’t need it at all - it’s just a band aid for people to use because they find it too hard to think in the first place. More fundamentally - the obsession with “lining up your meter to zero” - and the endless online “tutorials” reinforcing this “method” has created a world of lemming photographers. Instead of pre-visualizing and creating the photo you want, most people seem satisfied with the ‘zero’ approach and/or using a histogram to avoid “clipping” without thinking about what it is they want their image to actually look like. Just another sub-art of the dumb-it-down, instant gratification society we live in.

    • @ian_worth
      @ian_worth  3 года назад

      I shoot large format 4x5 and digital and whilst i understand your point, I believe there's a tool for every job. Understanding exposure is key when shooting film and I too, use the zone system to judge this along with a spot meter. However, when I've got my digital camera in my hand, why wouldn't I use such a great tool as the histogram. It doesn't mean i don't understand exposure, its just an easier way of seeing it.
