All the years I've used Lightroom and I hadn't even thought to see what the "colour" box did in the local adjustments panel... I do a lot of colour grading to my photos and to get the grading in just certain areas I've been making virtual copies, grading for different areas of the photo and then opening them as layers in Photoshop and combining them through masks and saving them back into Lightroom. This is going to save me a lot of faff, thank you so much for this video! Really enjoying your channel.
Nice video Ian. I like the way you used split toning to improve your images. As a Capture One user I have to say, this is all much easier in Capture. You don't need a "hack" You can use what is called Color Balance, which has wheels for highlights, mid tones and shadows much like the new color grading in light room. However this can be put on a layer which means your can paint in (or use a luminance mask or a linear or circular gradient) to apply it to selective parts of the image.
This is an eye opening tutorial! I had forgotten that trick of shrinking the image in order to make selections over the entire photo. I like the subtle control your process gives for isolating where the split toning is a applied. I have fallen into the habit of sending an image to Photoshop to make my fine contrast adjustments. I made my own color balance action that works well on a lot of images, I just vary the opacity most of the time.. Your method allows a lot of fine tuning in Lightroom. Great stuff, Ian. I have been following you for a couple of years now, but I have never spoken up. Thanks for this, and all your other advice.
Thanks, Ian. I never would have thought of using the luminosity masking for color toning. I've been frustrated at times as well with the "new" color grading tool and these mothods of yours add to my toolbox.
Great Vid. However, I guess this update of Ligthroom is copied from Capture One which is much better on colour management. And you have the ability to work with layers, not only local adjustment tools.. love it
Great hack Ian. I must admit I really don't like the colour grading tools in LR at all and find them really awkward to use. Picking a colour on the wheel is so fiddly. I much prefer the old split toning panel which to me seemed much simpler to use with much more precise control.
It's fiddly, but with Alt you can select more precise, and with Shift you can lock down the hue, and with Ctrl you can lock down the saturation. Those last 2 also work in conjunction with Alt - so you can make an accurate selection. For mimicing the old split-tone effect, be sure to push the blend to 100 though.
