- Our gospel tune is also a duet, Alison Krauss & Gillian Welch - I'll Fly Away. The tune is on the soundtrack for Oh Brother, Where Art Thou. Mom likes their version because "it has all the verses." The Westerner thewesterner.blogspot.com/

I was singing this song to my mom, and she breathed her last during my third verse (I looked the words up the night prior - there're so many) where the words were about being reunited with family already in Heaven, she breathed out her last breath. I'm pretty certain she chose that moment.
I went to a local homeless man's funeral in our small town. He requested this song and it moved me to tears, he was such a kind, unassuming man. R.I.P. Larry Gibbs
Yes...RIP Larry Gibbs..🕊
He sounds like he was a kind man fear not for he is now what's with God
Larry Gibbs died? He owed me $20.
Rest in peace for Larry
id sing it for him too
My grandma died today and she's flown away to heaven with grandpa. I'll miss you so much 😭
This song is a lot more personal to me.
My former first-grade teacher, Tina, passed away from a Brain Aneurysm a few days before Christmas. This song was played while people put flowers on her box of ashes. There was a pot full of them, but I went to the edge of the sand and grass on the beach and plucked two stems of Sour Grass and tied them into a knot, forming a heart. I then walked over to her ashes and placed them on top of her little box. I literally could not stop crying, along with everyone else around me at her memorial. At the very end of the memorial service, her husband and brother paddled out to the ocean and spread her ashes.
Tina was the kind of person who made everyone feel better without you realizing it. My brother was friends with her son and my mom was friends with her. It took me until that day to come to terms with the fact that she was gone.
Miss you Ms. Tina...
Took my my wife to see Allison Krauss front row for our anniversary in 2017. Our wedding song was 'When You Say Nothing At All'. She had an Aneurysm rupture in June 2020 at 51 yrs old and has been in a nursing home since. This song is very tough to hear but all I can hope is that she hears this and feels comfort....
Prayers your wifey is doing better today
I heard this song and this version here for the first time ever on 8/3/24. Then someone sang it slowed right down. It went into my soul.
Blessings to all here 💚. And I decided that I want this sung at my funeral, with a dance to go with it. The other song I want is called The Deer’s Cry or St Patrick’s Breastplate.
No special effects, just genuine talent.
Yeah but think how much better it would be with lasers and shit
I used to sing this song in church when I was younger. I think I need this song played for me when I’m a very old woman and my time is ‘nigh. To give me the courage and serenity to let go. It’s so moving. And it gives me hope
I love this song. The world needs this music to heal 2022 (inflation, school shootings, war Russian Ukraine (Taiwan China). Astronomical gas and food prices, homelessness, etc.
@dennismayugba3326- I agree with you wholeheartedly. I only heard this song and this version for the first time ever 6 days ago. I will sing in solidarity and to all you name as needed. My singing voice is not considered a singing voice. I will sing it as an anthem.
My Grandfather said he sang this song during the battle of Okinawa.
Trent Dobbs 🤯❤️✝️🇺🇸 That gave me goosebumps and put a giant lump in my throat! (and yes, some tears.)
God bless him....One of The Greatest Generation....
Thank you for sharing this story about a song that is dear to me. I was unfamiliar with the song, and then one night in Panama, two country boys that I was with on military duty were singing it in our barracks. The song has been a special favorite of mine ever since.
Thats pretty heavy. Glad to see he was able to pass that tale along.
What more can guide you through the valley of death than the Glory of God and Jesus our savior.
I'm reminded of this song when I recall my own mother's passing. She was a church organist/ pianist.
I got the phone call on a Sunday morning. I asked, what time, when? The person who called me said she passed away at 8:00 that morning. Any other Sunday she would have been playing for the choir. It's my guess that the Lord needed an organist.
Exact same with my family. Beautiful song to take you off.
I love that ❤️

Sounds like He sure did. You'll gather with her again, one fine day. What a fabulous thing to look forward to!!
When I was locked up some Christians from the cowboy church would come give a sermon I guess its called but we would all sing this song along with them take us to a different level hard to describe but i thank them and god for those days when we needed it

p.s 2020 is the worst year ever for me
Some bright morning when this life is over
I'll fly away
To that home on God's celestial shore
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh glory
I'll fly away, in the morning
When I die, Hallelujah by and by
I'll fly away
When the shadows of this life have gone
I'll fly away
Like a bird from these prison walls I'll fly
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, fly away, oh glory
I'll fly away, in the morning
When I die, Hallelujah by and by
I'll fly away
Oh, how glad and happy when we meet
I'll fly away
No more cold iron shackles on my feet
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh glory
I'll fly away, in the morning
When I die, Hallelujah by and by
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh glory
I'll fly away, in the morning
When I die, Hallelujah by and by
I'll fly away
Just a few more weary days and then
I'll fly away
To a land where joys will never end
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, fly away, oh glory
I'll fly away, in the morning
When I die, Hallelujah by and by
I'll fly away
I'll fly away
I'm not even religious but I can appreciate the beauty of this song.
Death is nipping at your heels and it will find you soon.
Janet Gilbert
How touching that you cried. The fact remains that you worship a god that would torture a soul for eternity. That is not love, that’s evil. Christianity is an absurd, immoral, outdated belief system. Great song, though.
It's not evil, Honey, it's justice.

I went to theology school as a young man, but it took studying and teaching Christian morality to turn me into an atheist.

Thanks for the comment, sugar. What is just about eternal punishment for a temporal infraction?
This was my grandpas favorite song and today is his birthday I miss him so much
I was raised in New zealand. Nana was born here, her siblings born in Cork. We knew very little about our family. Knew none of them. Some went usa, some Australia, some new zealand. The connections we have found are obituaries from Wars. Scotland is a similar story. Dispossessed. It's amusing what's considered a worthy cause. A race of people who have to find the trace of themselves in the butchers bill for the same empire that caused it all
This was played at my grandfathers funeral, this song reminds me of him so much. I miss him so much 😞
I can still see his coffin... 40 years on... im goin ta fly away to where they all are though... so its only a little longer.
I wish there was a heart emoji for this, the 'thumbs up' hardly suffices. Love love love love love love love this rendition of this beautiful song. Play it for me when I die, and by and by I will fly away.
🥰
❤️
One of my favorite movies of all time
Alison has the voice of an angel.
how do you know?
@@geoffreycoghy3783 I've always said that about Allison and will always believe that also.
This song was just performed at my father's funeral recently. It's such a wonderful song, and it was one of his favorites.
Same here!! It was my dads favorite and now I just love to hear it too! I wonder if it was a favorite of someone he knew that passed as well and it passed on to him the way it's been passed on to me now. So beautiful at his funeral. He would've been proud.
+Kimberly Haynes This version was played at my mother's funeral. She had always liked the song, but especially enjoyed this version. Out of over 600 videos here at Ranch Radio, this song is in the top five for number of views.
Kimberly I sang it at my mom's funeral, I love it❤
I'm here getting it for my Grandmothers funeral. Perfect track.
That's beautiful. I plan on playing this for my father, should I get the chance to talk to him one last time on his deathbed.
This song is what got me through when my sister was killed in a car accident a week before her 18th birthday
+Becky Blair That's rough. Death is another journey, though. Blessings
Becky Blair Awww god bless!😢

Beautiful harmony!
one of my favorite gospel songs ❤
I like many first heard this on 'O Brother Where Art Thou?' and I just heard a great live rendition on Cerys Matthews show on BBC Radio 6. I think that film introduced a lot of people outside the USA to a lot of gospel Blue Grass etc.
I love Gillian & Allison's version of this song.
Like many below, I think I will add this song to my last wishes at my funeral. This song helped me go through many obstacles. Thank you
Great song praise Jesus
I woke up with this song....Karra is here...the force is with her...
Allison Krauss & Union Station have really good Americana roots music! "Like a bird from these prison walls I'll fly away!" Praise the LORD!

My favorite church is the church of music.
Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves: we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. - Psalm 100
Jesus loves y’all and He died for you! God bless!
One of my favorite gospel songs
this song brings me many memories of my mother, thanks.
No mo’ cold iron shackles on my feet!! Ill fly away!

My neighbor used this song in his Instagram story. I had never heard it before, and I now love this song! Thanks Neighbor Ben!
Love this song which was in the best movie,Oh,Brother,Where art Thou!
For my love for ever 🧡💛🧡
Je t'aime🧡
Intricate picking, close harmony, heartbreaking lyrics. Must be bluegrass.
A wonderful song to attract courage and hope. I'd love to see the movie. It seems that I can relate to this.
One of the best movies ever written
I'm only just barely 25 and I've known six people to pass away by suicide at different times in my life... very sad and heavy things to process for me, but in my own struggles of depression this song makes things a little better!
Stay strong, Sweetheart. The world needs you and depression is just a lying voice in our heads. I struggle, too. :) God Bless
Stay strong. God is with you
You are loved!
Sorry to hear this. Like someone else said, stay strong.
Much love
When I was your age I was in a mental hospital suffering from major depression. Depression whispers that things will never get better and that you can't stand the pain. Depression lies. Hold on. Just hold on and keep holding on. It will get better, I promise. I'm nearly 70 years old now and love being alive, even when things are tough. You are probably loved more than you know, but if not, one day you will be. Be good to yourself; you deserve it.
Absolutely love this!
What a beautiful song
My dads favorite gospel song.
Hope I'm not the youngest listening to this..... 26 years young 😊
Robin Thompson I'm 14... my parents played this movie soundtrack for me forever. I love both the movie and the soundtrack :)

A memento mori; longing for that far shore and an end to life's shackles.

gold standard. at least for me...
"...from these prison walls I'll fly..."
Truly the saddest song I’ve ever heard.

I'm a Dapper Dan man. I don't like FOB either. ; )
Theres a dozen hair nets
It’s FOP
This is not the version that was in the film. Look up the Kossoy sisters for that version.
Far away from all these FAIR TRADE DEALS in the USA. Feeling the good of the people. BAK
Amazing.
Where can i find the vocals score ?
I realized I wasn't as pale as I thought I was at 2:18.
A very important reminder about this song .... ONLY those who have repented from their sins and placed their faith in Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour before they die, WILL "Fly Away" to Heaven/Glory for eternity with Jesus.
If you haven't....then Jesus tells us in the Bible that those people will be eternally separated from Him and be in Hell 🔥🔥🔥
Try Whitby.
Me irl
I don't think this song is about the rapture. Ha. (To the person preaching)
Yes, yes it is
no, no it isn't
The Rapture is a pre-millenialist doctrine. This is the more traditional Christian hope to fly over Jordan to Heaven. I remember hearing it in the Missouri Ozark churches, and it expressed the hope to meet with their loved ones.
Its a prison song
