In the autumn of last year, I decided to do a rewatch of the Doctor Who television series (all of them). Part way through, I happened upon a very funny quotation attributed to a Diamanda Hagan, in some RUclips thread or other. I thus discovered this channel - and the excellent Quick Guide to Classic Who, with its optimal balance of information, affection and irreverence. And now there’s this - which I have already found most informative. I’ve long been an ardent enthusiast of televised Doctor Who, but only recently became aware that it had also such a huge resource of audio drama - a catalogue so bewilderingly vast that I had no idea that I had myself - accidentally - become recently involved in it. A discerning guide like yourself will no doubt prove invaluable in charting some sort of path through the labyrinth. In fact, so impressed was I by the Classic Guide that I actually wrote down a list of phrases that had amused me. Here’s a handful of them. They are in no particular order, and they may be difficult to fathom out of context, but what is important is to spread confusion, not eliminate it: ‘A race of man-hating, genocidal, possibly Lesbian go-go dancers.’ ‘Unlike most musicals, this one has only one song’ ‘If I showed you any more, the actor might chew through your walls, right through the screen, even though he’s long dead’ ‘And the companion is back to being stupid’ ‘No one can out-act this man when there’s foam involved’ ‘Leela: the only companion more likely to stab you than Jamie’ ‘Battled hardened disco-robots’ ‘Half of ABBA, crossed with a Christmas cracker’ ‘Meringue-faced future Doctor’ ‘Vanilla made flesh’ ‘Tom Baker looks like he’s fighting the urge to slit his wrists’ ‘And that’s only in part because of Jo’s jacket’ ‘This is a must-see … but it’s also f***ing terrible’ Magnificent work - a great way to introduce DW to the uninitiated - and hugely entertaining to the … initiated. Oh Ry In Eye Key Ooh Ley! 😁

You mimicked my own thinking there on Colin Baker. Much improved, there. Easily my favourite Big Finish Doctor. They wrote him far, far more competently than the television show did... though that is not exactly the highest bar. Incidentally, I work as a call centre manager for a market research company, and one day while floor walking I heard an interviewer say the name 'Colin Baker'. Respondents for that project were supposed to be on the wealthier side, so I thought 'nah can't be'. I went to the desk, listened in for a second, just long enough to hear him speak. Within two syllables I knew it was him. Interviewer wasn't handling the call well either, so I very probably almost got escalated to Colin on the phones. Can you imagine how awkward that would have been? :)
As someone who has a constant on and off again with Dr Who but tends to enjoy the more batshit high concept of classic I was only ever vaguely aware of Big Finish. I feel foolish now definitely going to check some of these out as I work on college projects. Thanks!
Big finish is the main source of my Doctor Who fandom and probably why 8 is my personal favorite of the doctors. I actually got into them on your suggestion in the original guide videos so I'm excited to see where you go with this.
Rory stories are REALLY good. LIke no, they are some of the best, most heartwarming stories big finish produces because Rory is that perfect a protagonist. In the second boxset he becomes best friends with Lancelot who is 100% in love with Rory and their friendship (Rory sadly doesn't reciprocate) is amazing. I actually teared up at the end of Camelot boxset.

I was wondering if you'd get sroung to doing big finish content. It'll be interesting interesting to see how you do the visuals for your reviews. I've been doing still images and creating scenes out of cut outs when I have to. Its time consuming but it's fun
I go back and fourth on whether i love or despise masterful or an absolutely un love with it, because the first half is... ironically, masterful, but I feel it really goes off the deep end when they rub out of itnresting interactions
I really enjoyed Big Finish's audio dramas of Judge Dredd. Toby Longworth is spot on as Dredd, and in "Judge Dredd: Solo", he plays 23 characters. Simon Pegg and Mark Gatiss make guest appearances in that series as well.
There aren't enough words for how excited I am for this, I am both excited and terrified to hear your opinion of Doctor Who and the Pirates or the Lass that Lost a sailor or the best Doctor Who story in any medium ever.
You have no idea how hyped I am for this. Your Quick Guide To Classic Who series were one of the main reasons I managed to get into Classic Who over 7 years ago. So thanks SO MUCH for that! And thanks so much for doing this! Big Finish has been such a passion of mine for nearly as long as I've been a Whovian (Especially the McGann ones, Stranded is AMAZING!!!). So I can't wait to see what you do with this new guide series. Best of luck to you!
There was a minor effect TV Who returning had on big finish, it cut short the divergent arc in the eighth doctor stories as they decided to end all ongoing arcs to create a fresh start in the main range - leading to the absolute clusterfuck that is The Next Life
Honestly never thought I'd say this, but thanks RTD for not stopping Big Finish, like I get I should be grateful he brought WHo back but honestly... ehh I'm just burned out on New who I guess... I miss the slower pace of the old stuff and the less continuity to keep track of, which whne your main character can go anywhere and do anything good luck HAVING a continuity...
Can’t believe you listed Dudman’s 12 impersonation, yet failed to mention the even more ropey Briggs’s version of 9 XD But yeah, good luck covering all this madness from a company whose motto really should be “Big Finish: For the love of giving every ancillary character some box sets”
I’ve recently started getting into big finish and got some big finish vouchers for my birthday but I’ve got no idea on what to spend them on hopefully this video series will help me with that
If you don't want to wait for the videos I'd suggest getting some early stuff on download (cheap and some of their most interesting stuff). The Evelyn/6 and Peri/ Erimem/ 5 stuff are faves of mine and complete (unlikely to have any extra adventures added).
I’ve only listened a few audios but saw a lot of review over series of Big Finish and in my opinion, the sixth doctor is the most improved doctors. He’s benefited from Big Finish more.
I got lended a bunch of audios a while back and timehacked was amongst then, I am so glad I didn't have to buy it to realise how bad the 12 impression is
I love scrolling past my friends monthly range collection and just stealing random cds from them (give then back eventually obvs) but you find some of the best wacky episode concepts that I'd love if the show was more attuned to
I'd actually say Davison is most improved by Big Finish and I don't even like his Doctor. Davison even acknowledged in one of the inteviews that he was horribly miscast when he played the Doctor on TV and had no idea what the Hell he was doing with the character but returning to it now he's actually old and mature enough to play the character properly he's a lot mor comfortable with the mantle. In contrast Colin always was the Doctor, always was perfect for the role and already had a decent pile of TV stories. Big Finish just made him even better.
AWWW FUCK YEAH! loved your content for years, and quick guide to classic who was what converted me from *stock rtd era fan* to actual Doctor who fan. i'd seen quite a few episodes of classic before i saw your series (around 2013-2014 ish i remember it being pre-series 8) but i was still overall ignorant to the whole series and how good it was. I still overall disagree with your takes on new who but after getting really into big finish during lockdown i'm glad i get to see you talk about this! Personally 7 + Ace monthly stuff, the Evelyn and 6 adventures, some of the EDA's and 8th doctor monthly's and Torchwood aliens among us rank up there for me as my favourite stuff they've done.
@@DiamandaHaganonly seen flip in the fourth wall, and 1 other one I can't remember the name of, thought she was aight but felt to me too much like Rose crossed with ace. @@ms.antithesis Give the Flip and Constance joint adventures a go, they really shine when put together. Static, Scorched Earth and the Behemoth in particular.
Have you seen the Doctor who world of wonder yet? Also everyone who do you think Neil Patrick Harris is playing in the 60th ( I think that it's the Celstiael toymaker)
My main problem with Doctor of War was that the Daleks didn't fucking die! I was hoping for a series based around a Time War with an actually legitimate threat like the Great Vampires, Racnoss or Faction Paradox.
I hate to sound harsh but I do not gravitate towards Stephen Noonan's First Doctor, I much prefer David Bradley, yes he sounds nothing like Hartnell but he does perfectly capture the spirit of the First Doctor through his own performance When it comes to these recastings you either need someone who's spot on with their impression like Jacob Dudman, Frazer Hines or Tim Trealor, or someone who may not sound like the Doctor but captures their spirit like Bradley or Michael Troughton. Stephen Noonan sounds more focused on trying to be an exact impersonation of Hartnell rather than give his own performance as the character as his impersonation doesn't work At least for me anyway
My dear Daniel, there are far harsher sounding things you could have said than that; and I like the word ‘gravitate’ in any context. What Stephen is doing with the performance is certainly not to everyone’s taste; and - as a fan who has previously experienced severe disappointment himself with aspects of the programme - he is extremely sympathetic to their reservations. He always tries to read every comment made about it - partly from an insistence on hearing bad news immediately, but also out of a belief in ‘the power of facing’,or in the hope of learning from ‘just criticism’. Very best wishes to you though, Daniel. And I’ll seriously consider what you have said. SN 😁
@@stephennoonan8417 Thank you sir, I appreciate knowing I've not been too harsh in what I've said, it can be very easy to go overboard with negative criticism. And it's not really fair to give a final verdict when you've only done one release so far. I do hope my current opinion will improve over time. And in the end whatever I may say and however you take on board whatever feedback, so long as you're doing what you enjoy that's the most important thing. Very best wishes to you too sir
@@danieldunn613 Oh, that’s all right, Daniel. It’s a curious thing to survey the range of responses the work has received - from deeply unimpressed like yourself to the positively adulatory. I suspect the truth lies somewhere in the middle. I do enjoy it, yes. And it may be irrational of me, but it might surprise you to learn that I (almost) enjoy the negativity as much as the positivity - because any sort of uniformity is just, well, paralysingly dull, boring and tedious. I suppose the ideal is to hear somebody I respect say, ‘Not bad at all.’ What I would encourage - and no doubt the likes of Briggs and Haigh-Ellerry would approve of this economically 😉 - is that auditors listen to a whole story rather than just clips or trailers before they make a judgment. I’m sure you have, Daniel - and, as I say, I’m sorry it’s not to your taste. But I appreciate your perspective. Very best wishes, Stephen. 😁
Dreyfus was never The Master he was just A Master, and frankly the only reason his Master even existed is cos Big Finish hadn't yet decided to use Jon Culshaw as the Delgado incarnation, in short I found his Master boring and I won't miss him
It’s even worse when Masterful gave the Master’s first incarnation a way more interesting characterisation than the Destination Wars did. I wish we got that squeamish version of the Master who constantly kept trying to moralise his actions from the get go.
I think its because hes doing his own take on it. I can kind of understand that. Its his dad he's being asked to imitate. I wouldn't want to do an impression of my dad.
yo i thought the exact same thing and checked the comments to see if anyone thought the same! Like I really liked Diamanda's old classic who guide vids so wanted to watch this but somehow they've picked up a really weird way of talking since then

Elliot crossley 10th has been spot on, he also did voice of 10th in doctor who parody.
I got lended a bunch of audios a while back and timehacked was amongst then, I am so glad I didn't have to buy it to realise how bad the 12 impression is
The Day Today skit was hilarious 😁 good vid!
Yes! So excited!
I make my list of audios by companions too
Great review
Fucking awesome. Awesome to the max
Oh no, this is gonna kill her...
...
*slowly opens popcorn*
Where did you get the video with the elves
Thank you for these, by the way. I was able to get into Doctor Who thanks to your overviews.
Sean Pertwe should play an unbound Doctor
a video on the AVs would be cool
How do you feel about 6 and Constace+Flip tho!
@@DiamandaHaganonly seen flip in the fourth wall, and 1 other one I can't remember the name of, thought she was aight but felt to me too much like Rose crossed with ace. Liked constance in the story I saw her in although again can't remember the name, she was more unique imo. Still not glad we never got Evelyn + frobisher + 6.
@@ms.antithesis Give the Flip and Constance joint adventures a go, they really shine when put together. Static, Scorched Earth and the Behemoth in particular.
@@DiamandaHagan will do
Gallifrey is dev still my fav Big finish spin off series
Have you seen the Doctor who world of wonder yet?
Also everyone who do you think Neil Patrick Harris is playing in the 60th ( I think that it's the Celstiael toymaker)
My main problem with Doctor of War was that the Daleks didn't fucking die! I was hoping for a series based around a Time War with an actually legitimate threat like the Great Vampires, Racnoss or Faction Paradox.
Ohhh Yeah~
I hate to sound harsh but I do not gravitate towards Stephen Noonan's First Doctor, I much prefer David Bradley, yes he sounds nothing like Hartnell but he does perfectly capture the spirit of the First Doctor through his own performance
When it comes to these recastings you either need someone who's spot on with their impression like Jacob Dudman, Frazer Hines or Tim Trealor, or someone who may not sound like the Doctor but captures their spirit like Bradley or Michael Troughton. Stephen Noonan sounds more focused on trying to be an exact impersonation of Hartnell rather than give his own performance as the character as his impersonation doesn't work
At least for me anyway

😁
@@stephennoonan8417 Thank you sir, I appreciate knowing I've not been too harsh in what I've said, it can be very easy to go overboard with negative criticism. And it's not really fair to give a final verdict when you've only done one release so far. I do hope my current opinion will improve over time. And in the end whatever I may say and however you take on board whatever feedback, so long as you're doing what you enjoy that's the most important thing.
Very best wishes to you too sir

Oh, that’s all right, Daniel.
I suppose the ideal is to hear somebody I respect say, ‘Not bad at all.’
What I would encourage - and no doubt the likes of Briggs and Haigh-Ellerry would approve of this economically 😉 - is that auditors listen to a whole story rather than just clips or trailers before they make a judgment.
I’m sure you have, Daniel - and, as I say, I’m sorry it’s not to your taste.
But I appreciate your perspective.
Very best wishes,
Stephen.
😁
Ubot in ww1
Dreyfus was never The Master he was just A Master, and frankly the only reason his Master even existed is cos Big Finish hadn't yet decided to use Jon Culshaw as the Delgado incarnation, in short I found his Master boring and I won't miss him
They shoulda sked Tipple heh
It’s even worse when Masterful gave the Master’s first incarnation a way more interesting characterisation than the Destination Wars did. I wish we got that squeamish version of the Master who constantly kept trying to moralise his actions from the get go.
Oof that Michael Troughton voice 😬 Frazer Hines’ is so much better
I think its because hes doing his own take on it. I can kind of understand that. Its his dad he's being asked to imitate. I wouldn't want to do an impression of my dad.
“Yes Jamie, that is a big one”
Can’t watch this because of the way your accent goes weird at the end of ever sentence very distracting
And my accent is weird to begin with.
yo i thought the exact same thing and checked the comments to see if anyone thought the same! Like I really liked Diamanda's old classic who guide vids so wanted to watch this but somehow they've picked up a really weird way of talking since then
WOOOOOOT
