Get over it. If Minnesota resigned Cousins for the same contract and then, drafted Penix, nobody would have an issue with it. The same people dissing Atlanta for doing it would be suggesting it was shrewd and a smart move to both protect the present and build for the future. The same logic applies to Atlanta's unorthodox decision and people calling the move foolish are projecting their ignorance.

My problem with shows like this is that they don't do their homework. I get it, the Falcons weren't must see tv last year, but if you're going to talk about them, then at least know what you're talking about. "The Falcons were bottom 5 in all defensive categories last year." No they were not, not even close. Last year was their best defensive unit since 2017. Ryan Neilson had those guys balling at times last year, defense damn near carried them to the playoffs until injuries ultimately finished them. Do better guys, do your homework on teams you don't actively watch, it hurts your credibility. Just saying.

This pick made plenty of sense to me. 1) Everyone knows NFL contracts don't mean anything, I'm sure there is a way out of Cousins contract whenever they want 2)Taking Pennix protects them in case Cousins can't stay healthy 3) the team overall is solid enough that they won't be picking in the top 10, especially if Cousins is healthy and playing well, which means if they chose to wait until say next year to draft a Qb, what are the odds they would have a chance to draft someone on Pennix level late 1st or second round?
You can't say "Qb is the most important position in sports" and in the next breath say they should have drafted a defensive player. If this was the best opportunity to not only cover themselves in case Cousins gets hurt, but to also have the long-term Qb in place, it's absolutely the right choice

It's crazy to me how people can't think for themselves.
The Steelers have TJ Watt as a pass rusher one of the best in the League. How many playoff games has he won??? How many playoff games have the Steelers won since Big Ben retired? Let that sink in for those who think a pass rusher will get you wins in the playoffs. What team lead the league in sacks this past season. How many playoff games did that team win. Team with the Da Man at QB won the SB.
Denver signed Wilson for 245 million for 5 years. He only played for them for 2 seasons. They still owe that man 39mil, and he is playing for the Steelers. Guess what Denver just drafted Bo Nix because Wilson didn't fit Sean Payton scheme.
    Let that sink in.
People complaining about 100mil Cousins singed for two yrs with the Falcons. Thats 50Mil a yewr, thats the going rate for a QB that avgs. passes for 4,3K+ passing yards 34 TDs and 11 ints a season. Cousins is also coming off a 13 win season in 2022 and in 2023 he was on an MVP pace stats wise before he got hurt. Meaning 4,8k to 5K passing yards 45-50 TDs and 11 ints for the season. And that 100Mil for those who dont know, is still less than what Denver gave Wilson in two yrs. And they still owe him 39Mil, and he isn't on the team anymore. Let that sink in.
2nd Kirk knows the new Offensive scheme Morris is bringing to Atl. from the Rams. He is already being called a Coach on the field by players on the Falcons Offense and Defense. Cousins is already running scripted playes with the Offense let that sink in. So he is already impacting the Team.
3rd Nobody wanted Fields the Falcons could have drafted him and didnt. Wilson didn't fit the Falcons scheme either so why would Atl bring in a Fields who nobody wants or Wilson who Denver didn't want when neither fit the Falcons passing scheme. Who does that?!?!
4th The Jets have a 40yr old QB that also had an Achilles injury. You don't think they were dumb for not selecting a QB. Do you actually think Rogers is playing more than 2 more yrs?!?! They are drafting a QB next season they should have drafted a QB last season truth be told. If they did their season wouldn't have went down the drain the way it did.
The Falcons Brass refused to play these silly games. And folks are mad.

This had Atlanta sports radio on fire today. A few people came to mind. With Michael Lombardi at the top of a short list. But this happens when you make decisions that don’t add up. The only explanation that really makes sense is that you expect Cousins to get hurt early or you expect him to play two years. I’m sure Penix doesn’t want to be a four year backup. To say you’re following the Green Bay model doesn’t add up because Love and Rogers were picked in the 20’s. But maybe Arthur Blank weighed in about quarterback insurance just in case. But I have to admit being a Falcons ticket holder isn’t boring🍻

True they were drafted in the mid 20s, but that was because the had competent QB play for years. Plus next year's QB class is not that good and taking a late round pick after the Ridder (3rd round) mess this year wouldn't really be wise. To be fair did anyone think the Falcons are Super Bowl contenders before or after the draft.😂

    • @dmoore2272
      @dmoore2272 Месяц назад +1

It doesn’t make sense from the standpoint of paying Cousins 100 million guaranteed and he’s coming off an injury. He has never been an elite quarterback, now how will he play coming back from injury? I think Atlanta saw Drake Maye get drafted ahead of JJ McCarthy, and they knew that Penix wasn’t making it to the 2nd round where he was projected to go. He was there second rated quarterback in this year’s draft. So, should they have waited to see if they could get him in the second round or draft him with the 8th overall pick?

Im not even a Falcons fan but for so many people to REFUSE to understand why they did this......I hope the Falcons are right. Yall talkin like there were better options at QB than Cousins. He goin to a 7-10 team where all the offensive rookies still have 2-3 years left on their deals. Penix got 5 years to get paid. Falcons settin up like the Chiefs, get their guy for 10 years so they can plug and play everybody else. If this aint Kirks last deal, the next one he get we goin be sayin "He lucky he got that."

This is on the owner because he signs the checks and had to agree with the GM’s plan to draft Penix after the team signed Cousins. The owner could have vetoed the idea since the team signed Cousins to a huge deal.

Takes over your team to continue succeed at the same level?
    Penix wont sit 3-4 yrs.
Kirk +1 & picks will get them back above 15 in next years draft for defense.
Atlanta was in the bottom 5 in take aways, but 18th in points allowed.

Everybody wants these QBs to play now when we keep seeing that it doesn’t always work, hell most of the time it doesn’t work BUT we have seen guys who sit for a few years develop actually work.
( Mahomes, Rodgers, Brees, Brady, Rothlosberger, Dak, Vick, Carson Palmer )
I don’t know if it’s gonna work but if it does y’all better go just as crazy to give Terry Fontenot and Raheem Morris they’re flowers bc the amount of over the board reactions and those racially undertone comments have been more than I have ever seen towards a GM / HC tandem.

Who’s the say, oh, us Falcons R not good enough because we didn’t hire old school Belichick, as it stands now. Let me state the Falcons are going to the Super Bowl. With Kirk cousins leading the way and if he gets hurt, Penix will take over, but until that panics will be prepared when his day comes in. It’s coming sooner than later, but yet Kirk cousins I have faith, just like I always have since middle school, and the middle ages always keep up with my Falcons being from here in northwest Georgia,, all the way from Barkowski to Jenkins and Wallace Frances to Alfred Jackson, along with all of our line, play offense and defense can name every position from 1980.. shout it out,, Let’s Go baby, 28 to 3 is the past, like you want to slur and downgrade us meaning of you national media folks, yep I heard many of you. Criticize judge us, that bull shit.. That shit was it, Matt, Ryan’s wasn’t his fault, that we didn’t run the ball. He delivered a perfect remarkable pass to the remarkable catch of Julio Jones, tapping his feet on the sideline, hurt toe, turf toe, the life time of touching feet, and all, would’ve been one of the best catches of all time along with the Steelers of 2000’s, or anybody else that lost his story to victors versus the ones who didn’t , just the same, sometimes even better than the winner of winner of life. Let’s all not fool ourselves, Author blank is a good man, a good example for us all..

Those people who hate this pick... their point of view is dependent on Kirk Cousins actually being really good... Kirk Cousins has been mostly a average QB!!!!
It isn't certain they win the NFCS. It isn't certain they make the playoffs
Kirk Cousins is 78 wins and 70 losses 2 ties as in his career
Kirk Cousins is 16 wins to 47 losses vs teams with a above .500 record
1 playoff win in 12 years
12 and 20 in National Televised games
3 and 12 on MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
We getting this theme yet?.. when the lights are the brightest he is at his worse.
36 year old QB coming back from a ruptured Achilles and may very well not be ready for OTA and much of training camp or preseason..
WHO IS THIS QB PEOPLE ARE SAYING >>> OMG WE WASTED OUR PLAYOFF WINDOW!!!
He has be firmly in the >> good category. .... mostly in the terrible category vs any teams with a pulse.
This outrage would ONLY MAKE SENSE if you are delusional about WHO kirk Cousins is.
He can get you to 9 games or so so you can get bounced....
Again read his resume, deal with it thru the spectrum of reality.
You draft a Rome Odunze... NO team drafted a defensive player until pick 14. THE REST of the NFL agrees no player on D was worth it.
That POV is ONLY legitimate under the belief that Kirk Cousins is something MORE than is resume.

I watch shows like this for about 5 minutes no more because they are hacks on the show says the same things as everyone else. A stop gap QB or bridge starter will get dumb coaches and GMs fired. This isn't the 80's or 90's. The last coach was FIRED using a stop gap QB. You have to WIN NOW!!! Over the next two years they will have Cousins a top ten QB and one of the best back ups in the league for onlyy 55 million. Dak and Lawrence in Jacksonville will get that for themsevles. The next two years Atlanta will win the division and have two home playoff games. What have to the vikings when Cousins got hurt? Cousins is 36 now coming off a major injury. He will be 38 after two years of his current contract. If Penix doesn't start until he is 26 and plays until he is 38 that would be a 12 year career starting. That's well worth it for a # 8 pick. These guys all say the same things like they can't think for themselves

This was one of one the weakest, dramafied analysis of the Falcons pick that I've heard so far, especially after the week has passed. The Falcons picked for their need, which was the most " pro ready" QB that may have possibly fallen to a division rival that we'd see twice a year for the next 10 to 15 years. We got a rookie who is not as productive under pressure , who will learn from an MVP type QB for a couple of years. No one believes he'll sit for 4-5 years. That was said to appease Kirk, and yall know that. At the end of the day, a competent backup quarterback was needed because Heineke was not it, and if Kirk were to get hurt, the season wouldn't necessarily be over. No edge rusher ( that fell 8 picks after the Falcons) would turn the Falcons season around in that situation or make us more of a Superbowl contender than when we signed Kirk. Suggesting Odunze was lazy. Our only real need on offense was a competent QB. Now we have two that fills the NEED for now and the future. NFCS is weak, we have a chance with a veteran QB to make the playoffs in years, we also have a possible tampering penalty on the horizon. The Falcons may not pick in the top 10 for years and may possibly won't even have one next year. Justin Fields is trash, we didn't want him here and those that did was desperate to relieve ourselves from 2 years of quarterback mediocrity. He's a backup now to a 3rd tier QB. Why would we want to experiment with him here after what we've been through and would have to pay him after his rookie contract next year. We'd either have to pay him big or trade him and if he played like he did in Chicago, he'd be outta here. No one cares about his feelings, but you care about Penix? Penix is where he is because or the unfortunate injuries in his career, his talent has sustained him. He may want to play now , but I'm sure he'll appreciate the longevity of his career for an organization that's currently playoff ready where he'll be the face of for a decade as long as he's healthy and consistent. I do appreciate your take on the " adult in the room" quote.

Good video post and I appreciate the conversation. However, it's neither a thumbs up or thumbs down. Yes, the Atlanta Falcons have made a collection of poor decision making. Drafting Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. out of Washington "isn't one of them." Paying Quarterback Kirk Cousins who only has one playoff win and was injured in 2023 is another. That's the problem and the first shoe to drop. Especially to pay him nearly or over $200 million dollars is problematic on its face. To conflate and distort that, and I'm not saying that's you guys. It's pretty much what I call the White domestic terrorists in media, audio and visual. I'm sorry also, but isn't the whole idea of any draft is to "pick the best player on the board?" Didn't the Atlanta Falcons do that. Yes, you are also supposed to pick and choose to your immediate needs. Let me repeat something that some folk are conveniently forgetting. Quarterback Kirk Cousins was injured all of last year. So why in the hell would I sign a player like that to a $200 million dollar contract for x amount of years? Make that person the franchise guy and have an unproven commodity in the process. No, some don't focus on that. Instead, we want to question the management. Which it should be question on the merits of what I presented with Kirk Cousins. To pick on Michael Penix Jr. as a draft pick or why he was picked has a shady side of bigotry to it. To the coward that want to call adult men children and can't put his name to it. I call that a serious 'folly' to give this man any credibility or airtime and I hope that you gentleman will do better next time. That's the extent of my criticism of the topic. Outside of that, a good show and I wish you gentlemen continued success.
