  • Join me as I make another visit to the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion in Mount Pleasant, Iowa in 2019, watching trains of the Midwest Central Railroad and trolleys of the Midwest Electric Railway on all five days of the event. This year, we witness the return of Midwest Central's Shay steam locomotive #9 from Colorado, operating at the Reunion for the first time since 2010. We'll also see trains pulled by 2-6-0 steam engine #6, Plymouth diesel #14, and gas switcher FS-2. On the Midwest Electric we'll watch and ride trolleys around their line, featuring cars 1718, 1779, 1945, and 320. Along with the rail action, we visit the Log Village, see the stationary engines of the Steam Powerhouse and Printer's Hall, and catch two mock train robberies at the Old Threshers North Village.
2019 marks my 20th visit to the Old Threshers Reunion, my 15th year filming the trains at the event, and this video is my 6th feature-length production uploaded to RUclips. I hope you enjoy it! Check out my "Historic Trains" playlist to view all of my past Old Threshers uploads.

At one point a Coupler broke, I was on the train when it happened. All the electricity in the cars shut off. And we sat there for an hour.

A 4-chime Nathan "P" series horn. I like the sound of it. I'll definitely be back up there this year for the majority of the event!

Chicago, Aurora, and Elgin R.R.interurban probably ran on the Metropolitan West Side Elevated R.R. to the Loop in
Chicago via 3rd rail at the L terminal where it changed to 3rd rail collection beams between the wheels to slide on
the electrified rail that was a few inches away and above the tracks. The CAE R.R. went out of business in 1957.

An absolutely beautiful pair of railroad operations all around! These multi-museum locations are definitely the ideal preservation sites.
I do however get pretty concerned about the speed #6 and sometimes even the electrics have to get up to in order to crest the hill. I know it’s necessary with the train weight and all, but it’s a bit nerve racking to see a long train barreling through a crowded exhibition area like that. The tight curves don’t help much either. It seems like just a matter of time before a person or vehicle ends up getting run down by a train or the engine derails into the crowd, especially considering the fact that they’ve already had a pretty serious brake issue. I’m not trying to be a foamer or anything, but it does get a bit frightening.

As a volunteer myself, all I'll say is that safety is our number one concern at all times. We do everything we can to ensure the safe operation of our trains. As a coductor, I'm always trying to keep my head on a swivel and watch out for not only my passengers but for pedestrians also.

9 is MASSIVE compared to the coaches, and other engines! Great video, I'm constantly watching this over and over again!
