    Great tips for absolute beginners but the title was a bit misleading. Hoping to learn something new but really these are just commonly used techniques.

      @@violetvotes2024 couple of reasons … can damage your machine (old mechanical machines are OK but newer electronic machines can go haywire!). Also, the chances of breaking a pin or the needle are pretty high. Half the needle may go down into the machine - causing damage to the bobbin assembly. Or, worst case, the broken needle/pin may fly up into your face or eye. Carefully remove the pin before sewing over it - without tugging /distorting the fabric. Takes some practice but it will become second nature.

      @@natasa2882 Ah! I can see that being used on the hem of narrow trousers or pedal pushers (showing my age!!!) I'd probably want to reinforce where the split meets the main seam.
