- I wasn't expecting this to happen while thrifting at the book fair! On the weekend, I went to the book fair to thrift for used books that I could resell on eBay for profit. I bought some great books to sell but then they asked me to leave! They thought I was buying too many books! I think the issue is that they want to be fair to everyone and let everyone get a fair shot at buying good books. I hate going to book sales and having resellers ruin it by being selfish and taking everything good.
I do understand that but it’s also open to all and like any sale at any business it’s always first in best dressed. I had an open wallet willing to spend lots of money to support their fundraising which is the actual intention of the fair. Sometimes it’s a hard balance I guess.
@@backfromburnout It is about fundraising, but it’s also supposed to be a fun event for the community. By having just a few people buy up the vast majority of the valuable/highly wanted items it takes away the fun. That’s how I think about it at least.
@@Desert_Topaz Goodwill Stores' mission is to raise money for the charitable activities Goodwill does. That's why people can take a tax write off for donations to them. They have to make enough money to pay for their stores and their staff, as well. It's incidental that the stuff is there for people who can't afford to buy new.
@@marthamurphy3913 Goodwill is actually a for-profit business. The man who started it has become a millionaire. To use their services you need a referral from a Government Agency that then reimburses them.
Making a living isn't selfish. Are you mad at Walmart for destroying local business cause they can't compete? Are you mad at nike when they sale products made by basically slaves? Are you mad at a majority of foods and sweets having high fructose which is highly addictive and leads to obesity and death? No, you're mad a small time resellers. Loser
This is why I don’t even bother going to book sales anymore. People with scanners are the worst. It’s the reason why thrift stores have gone up.

I don't blame the people running the sale. You grabbing everything takes all the fun out of it for the rest of the town, people that want a book instead of a profit.
The Store should advertise the Maximum number of books one person can buy.

The rest of the town? Doesn't look crowded in that book store at all so where is everyone IN THE TOWN? A valuable used book should sit on a shelf just in case you want to LOOK at it and MAYBE (but not likely) spend a dollar to buy it rather than be purchased by someone who respect's its value who will in turn sell it to someone else who respects it's value even more???? Yeah, okay....😆

When I watch RUclipsrs buy books , I enjoy hearing what they love about favorite writers' style and getting recommendations. I want to hear about how different books impacted their development as readers. I love seeing their excitement when they find books which they want to read. It felt odd listening to someone whose primary interest was the resale value of the books, but on the positive side , I learned a few things about this young lady's job.
I love reading. I constantly listen to self help audio books as I find it easier with my busy lifestyle. But I do love reading the romance genre paperback books for leisure. But I also love my job and love that I save thousands of books from
Landfill everyday and find them new homes. And I love that my job allows me to contribute thousands of dollars a year to the thrift/charity shops where I buy my used books.
This may be lost on a lot of people here, but not all things are part of a "grindset" and/or "hustle".
These people may not be looking to sell a ton, but to see books go out to as many people as possible. One person comes in, scanning the h3ll out of everything, and then peeling off with half the books to flip ruins the essence of the book fair.
What a stupid thing to say. The essence of the book fair is to sell books. I don’t give a damn who is buying them, as long as I sell them. I don’t care if you’re flipping them, reading them or giving them to family and friends. You are paying cash and the book fair is making money. Who the hell cares if Someone flips it or not ? You people who are so concerned with flipping do know that all businesses buy things cheap and sell it to us at a higher price. My husband used to sell to dollar stores and I can tell you now, they didn’t pay anywhere near $1 each for anything. Everyone is out to make a buck. Walmart, The Dollar Tree or a small seller on EBay. The game is the same….buy low and sell high. Make a profit. I don’t get why that’s hard to understand.

@@WillmobilePlus I think the problem is the charities often don't know the value of the items they are trying to sell, resellers exploit this. I am a reseller and I don't think of this when buying from yard sales or auctions. I once said to a charity shop that their prices are too low, but they said that the purpose is to help the poor. I told them open an ebay store and you will massively increase the fund raising. There are plenty of youtube vids where resellers whine about people asking realistic prices.

Did you see see the size of the room and the thousands and thousands of books they had? Plus they had boxes and boxes on top of the stage still waiting to put out. My three little bag trips didn’t even make a dent. Why would they want to set all those thousands of books out to not sell them all and make as much money for their community as possible?
Seems like they wanted it to be more like a community event for the locals, rather than pure fundraising.

Love resellers, but boy, buying a huge chunk really does take the fun out of the average citizen checking out the books at a book fair, what they should do is have resellers come at the end of the book fair and buy what's left over, or give a limit per day or something. The book fair would be so boring if I went and someone already took all the good stuff, I wouldn't wanna come back, honestly.
I do get where they’re coming from though, if the object of the book fair is to sell affordable books to people who would love them but wouldn’t be able to buy them at a higher price. I get that the people buying from you would also be getting books they will love but I can’t even imagine who would pay $60 I never would for one!
Yes true. I also save many books from
Landfill and find them new homes. Some books are worth a lot of money to others. I have sold books for hundreds.
Yes, the object of the book fair isn't just to make money but to provide a fun space for avid readers who can't afford full price books.
I've paid $80 for a used book before, because it was out of print and I really, really, really wanted it. I think I got it from AbesBooks at the time...don't see the difference between getting it from them or someone like Back from Burnout. We're out there. We are happy to find our books wherever we can. No shame.
yes - but some other reseller could come in five minutes and take more out.... doesnt mean there will always be good stuff the next day.
It’s kind of like they see you as a PROFESSIONAL and they want to sell to the average person. I don’t know. I mean it’s a BUSINESS for you.
These local book fairs are not for business that’s why. As a lover of book fairs I don’t like resale people grabbing them and raising the prices sky high compared to the book fair. All those children’s books went to more well off kids when the book fair books went to those who couldn’t pay that much.
That’s sad.
The local book fairs are for raising money for the community or charity.

What helps the community and the outlet merchants is the books selling fast. Every one including resellers makes the books so fast. The intent of someone buying a book has no bearing on that. It's simple logic

NO, the point of the book fair is probably to help those who cannot afford EXPENSIVE books. Geeze, greed is everywhere, not just in America. So sad.
Bookfairs are also aimed at making money for their charity or community and I had a lot of money to spend which would have gone towards that charity/community which then could have helped a lot of people. I spend tens of thousands helping charitable organisations and save thousands of books from landfill at the same time.

Stop acting like a Saint. I can put money on it that you partake in something highly unethical just from basic purchases you make or media you take in.
3 trips! Would be nice if someone who is on a budget to afford some books instead.
It's amazing the amount of comments made by people who have no idea how to run a business! Everything you buy gives the seller's up and down the chain, a profit. It's a concept called supply and demand. All of the items in your home that you have purchased you have given money to at least one reseller, but more likely at least two. Read up a little about business before making mean remarks when you don't understand how these things work. If this sale was not for resellers, they should have included that information in their advertising before making someone drive to their book fair.
The only reason I can think they would restrict your purchases is because they don't know if you will be a constant buyer and don't want to alienate the general public who will continue to return in the future.
Like you said, they were worried you were going to buy all the "good" books and there'd be no good books for anyone else. Not everyone can make the sale early on the first day. I feel it spoils it for everyone else. Also, in my opinion, if dealers are genuinely worried about maximizing income for a charity, they wouldn't pay $10 for a book they know is worth $60...

What I don't appreciate are individuals who go and buy dozens of bags of books purely with the intention of reselling them for a huge profit. That is not 'thrifting', that is profiteering - it denies less well off folk from purchasing a book at a thrifty price. The organizers of the book sale agree as they stopped the lady hoovering up the books. Finally, and in the spirit of your comment, it sounds like profiteering on the back of a charity and less well off folk, is exactly you. Peace.

I agree that this is a community event that many people wait eagerly for to acquire books for themselves, and I also get annoyed with resellers who come and buy up tons of books before anyone else gets much of a crack at them. There should, IMHO, be a limit on how many one person can buy at once. The sellers should come back at the end and go for what has not been sold to the real readers. That way the charity makes money and the community can still benefit from the good prices on books. Just my 2 cents (or 3 cents for inflation!)
Instead of admonishing book resellers who get up early to go to work looking for valuable books, how about you GET UP EARLY to get to the book fair or store ahead of re-sellers? Oh, you don't want to have to do that? A book's value isn't worth that to you? It's all about the act of browsing and more often than not BUYING NOTHING or MAYBE spending a dollar here and there? Yeah...that's what I thought.
@@zariballard Get a proper job! Anyone can buy and sell used books, some just want to buy and read without having to go through greedy middlemen who contribute nothing! You're not a business woman, you're a nuisance!

I can see if they wanted it to be more of a social event, possibly a meet-up for bookworms.

Our local library has 2 book sales a year. They go on for 3 weekends. The last couple of days the books are all 10 cents each and the last day of the sale they sell a grocery bag full for $1. There are so many books that have been donated by everyone in the community (2 colleges here). Great fun!
why do u figure they sell the books so cheap? i imagine they need to the room.
Maybe they would like to have some books left for others to buy in small amounts to enjoy themselves, rather than pigging away with them all to sell for your profit? !
Sorry if it upsets you, but, I agree with the bookfair volunteers. They’re not just interested in making money. The fair is a way for people on limited income to access books they otherwise can’t afford. I grew up very poor but read a huge number of books - because I could get them very very cheaply at bookfairs and charity shops. I also donated them back so another underprivileged child had a chance to lose themselves in their imagination. Buying them cheap and selling them on at profit - you are depriving poorer people.
I have literally spent tens and tens of thousands in charity shops and community fairs over the last few years and all that money is going to help poor people and people in need.
You’ve entirely missed the point, perhaps deliberately. People getting by on little money don’t want to go begging from charities. Clearly you have no idea just how much is involved in applying for hand-ups, it strips away any dignity, and the charities do not hand out cash for books - they give grocery vouchers and pay bills. Your white privileged upbringing has deprived you of the invaluable knowledge and experience required to demonstrate empathy and consideration for others. Buying up books meant for poorer people so you can make profits to fund your lifestyle is no different to stealing from the poor. I’ll leave it at that because you don’t want to examine your actions and motivation - you might not like the person you see.
@@krankywitch I’m not white privileged. You know nothing about my upbringing. I grew up poor with a single mum and an abusive father. We had absolutely nothing for very many years. I know everything about being poor.
And as for funding my own lifestyle. If you mean the books I sell pay for me to put food and clothing on my own four children then you are correct. That’s exactly what I spend my money on.
If that’s true, then you should be feeling the empathy and compassion, not taking small pleasures away from poor children.

Can we just take a minute to appreciate how genius that sauce packet design was! 🤯 The fact that you can do it one-handed 👏👏 the best we can do here in the U.K. is a little plastic sachet which never opens properly even with two hands and you end up with sauce everywhere apart from on your food 😂😂🤦🏼♀️
Also, the people that kicked you out might have had friends coming to buy a load of books and wanted to give them first dibs , that might be why they stopped you. It doesn’t make any sense otherwise .
Last time I went to Australia I got one of those packets with my meal and I thought it was the best thing I ever saw. I took a video and sent it to my wife.

I was going to say the same thing; I don't understand why this brilliant design of sauce packaging isn't found her in the UK (or anywhere else in Europe--at least the countries I've worked in or visited).
Those sauce packs are not always that easy to open. As a Brit visiting Sydney zoo in a white T-shirt, I tried to open one, and within seconds I looked as if someone had shot me. Didn’t just run down my front, it literally exploded. I looked like someone had try to assassinate me. Had to rush to the washroom, and spent the afternoon dripping round the zoo in a soaked T shirt.
I always enjoy watching your videos. I accidentally fell into book selling because of our house clearance business in the UK.

It's a tourist attraction for the town so it's understandable imo. You went for all the juicy books I go for - eg. Redwall series and the LOTR hardback, and left the crap (eg. Jamie Oliver cookbooks).
Can’t buy Jamie for $6 lol But I did post two Jamie Oliver books today and he’s good bread and butter for me if purchased at the right price :)
Maybe you need to read between the lines. So many charity shops, yard sellers & so on have gotten wise to resellers now. You have to expect that a lot of them find us greedy & annoying opportunists. Filming yourself was probably a dead giveaway & maybe that raised a red flag with them.
I think the spirit of the book fair is lost on this individual whose ONLY interest is not in the books for the purpose of reading but for quickly flipping them for a profit. Imagine going to a book fair and a book flipper is walking out with box upon box of books and you see one and they say to you.. hmm... I'll sell it to you for 10 quid... and they paid 1 for it. These are the kind of people that are scavenging the isles at The Goodwill or Salvation Army stores whose aim to sell to people who can't afford much and then flip them as "vintage" finds at swapmeets for hundreds of dollars...
Yes it’s my job to buy them and sell them on eBay. That’s how I feed my family of four kids. But if I was ever thrifting at a store or book fair and I picked up a book and someone next to me asked for it then I would hand it straight over to them. I also save thousands of books a year from landfill by doing this and I contribute thousands and thousands of dollars a year to the charity shops by buying books from them.
I'm not a book reseller. But I have purchased books from them online. Books that would have most certainly ended up in landfills due to the narrow market for them at places like Goodwill!! And I don't complain that I may have been able to get it for 2 dollars at goodwill but paid 45 to have a reseller send it to me. I don't begrudge the seller a way to make their living, as long as they price the books fairly according to what other sellers are charging. If goodwill wants to severely devalue what a book is actually worth and it means the resellers preserved something actually worth money to me, then I am so glad they're there! I have books upon books that are highly niched and would have been trash to most everyone else. Thank GOD for resellers!!! They know books real values and can save the ones I want from recycling. And your mass produced books by popular authors? Why do you care if a reseller buys them all? Those are everywhere and you can find another cheap copy in the very next store or sale you go to.
Also, why would I care if resellers are at a charity or a thrift store??!!! I have the option to go enter the store just as early in the morning as they likely do if first pick mattered. People are so entitled these days. How dare resellers make a living supporting charities and libraries, when "ME ME ME" could have gotten that book cheaper....had I not been so lazy and missed out. If any place really has an issue with what happens after something is sold, then they should state up front 'no resellers allowed'. Easy fix. Stupid from a business standpoint, but easy fix.
Hello lovely lady, I enjoyed the different style video of being taken out book shopping, plus your usual run through of each book. It's so much fun seeing what you found. The ketchup pots you have over there are so much easier to use than the sachets they give us in the UK that are hard to open and go everywhere! 🤣

Resellers coming in and scooping up high demand books are the bane of bookfairs.

I sell a lot of magazines. Some sell faster then others but they can bring great profits.
I can’t stand resellers that clear shelves before people who really need or would like to attain something at a price they can afford. I get the world runs on resales-even Walmart, the grocery stores and the mall are resale businesses- but let’s please respect community fairs and places where the intent is to bring togetherness, fun and low prices while fundraising to a community. To laugh about it and to act oblivious to your disrespectful attitude of that goal is disappointing.
Your said it. The intent is to fundraise for the community. And I have an open wallet ready to give. My one sales transaction could take 500 other people through the door to spend the same amount of money. I literally have spent spent tens of thousands in thrift stores and community events. And I’m just one little reseller of many. The charity shops and community sales need resellers.
If it's for fundraising then resellers help that even more crab. Go to a different bucket

Some of us feed our families from our business, I'm a disabled combat veteran, are you going to tell me I don't have a right to run a book business in the country I served?
I will never understand why someone would do that. “Oh, you want to buy everything I have for sale? Like take it all? So I have a guarantee that I will make all the money I could possibly make and I get to go home early?! No thank you, please leave my store and never come back.” What?
The fair was run by the elderly so I think maybe they just didn't understand or really think about it or understand how much money I would be willing to spend lol I often spend a lot at book fairs.

Yeah, it's nuts! There are a couple of workers at one of my favourite op shops who scoff "Oh, you one of those!" when I front up to pay. A couple of weeks ago, they were very politely in their place by the manager who arrived at the register moments after me declaring what a fabulous customer I am for buying so many books. Unbeknownst to the snooty people on the tills, the manager and I had been chatting earlier and he's quite sensibly, happy to see stock move through the store - that's what they are there for. They set their prices and get paid. Happy days! People in need get clothing, homewares, books etc from the organisation plus there's the cash from customers to do more support work. Let's have a bit of lateral thinking people!

You did get them on discount. I rarely buy from resellers. I will only do it if I need a piece for a collection and that has only happened once in my decades of shopping

She was also filming the entire time she shopped. It was a simple community fair that she’s making a tidy profit off of reselling a cars worth of books while also making a profit from this filmed content. When I saw her take ALL of a specific item like those western novels and those magazines I cringed. It’s just alot honestly and maybe they just didn’t like her vibes is all.
I am like a kid waiting for Christmas Day when it comes to book sales 😀

My local fair used to price by size - they had a gauge and if it went through the slot it was one price, if it didn't it was another. They stopped doing that years ago. Now it is per each (and they make up a number for me and the other dealers - I paid about $40 per fish tub this year).
I once travelled (six hours) to a fair where books were mainly individually (over)priced - never going back there! Strangely, there were bundles for $2-5 which were excellent value!
How bizarre they turned you away! Can't imagine our local fair doing that - as I said, they encourage dealers - but it's a LOT bigger than the one you went to here.
I've had it happen. I was not asked directly to leave, but I had staff standing near me watching disapprovingly. Very uncomfortable and I stopped going there.
I'm always kind of amazed at the prices you get for your books...at .70 AU per US dollar ($1.00) it's an easy conversion. But still some great profit!
I could be wrong, however, I believe the competition in Australia from larger companies such as Ziffit and music magpie being able to sell Books and Music at ridiculously low prices with free shipping is not allowed in order to allow a fare and competitive marketplace. This is not the case in the USA, Europe and The UK. This is of course my understanding of the situation and by no means an Authority on the matter 🙂
RUclips Algo had me find you. Slowly getting into selling books. Made a fortune off of some old sci fi books I got for free by accident. Now I'm always on the look out for Manga books at Garage Sales.
That was a pricing scheme that was totally new to me! I go to book sales regularly and have never seen that before! And the prices were higher than I ever see as well.
I can "understand" on the morning of Day 1 that they see someone walking out with 6 Ikea bags worth of books that they might be worried that they have been picked through & other later buyers won't find any value ... but in the last hour of Day 3 I thought they would be more than happy to clear the books !! I guess giving the manager your business card was out of the question :) Great video Mel
I went back on the last day 15mins before they closed as I was hoping to make a deal. They had fill a bag happening at that stage but because I was a reseller they wanted to charge me the original prices still. I grabbed 4 more bags but I said I would only pay the fill a bag pricing as everyone else had been.

I just think it's a great insight to the past.
The buying for $2 and selling for $60 is a great idea--however--one must consider:
finding/gathering the books/mags (half the fun)
researching what sells

I went to a book fair recently, unfortunately life got in the way and I got there 2 hours before it finished. They were packing up the books ready to donate to the charity shops. They still weren’t going to drop their prices. I did try to negotiate with them, if you put $20 of books in a box (started at $30) of the one genre you could fill the box up . So I guess I got the average price to $1 but I felt like I was being rushed to leave so I didn’t comp much. I made some mistakes but you live and learn
It's for local people and people who can't afford books to get books at reasonable prices get over it you still got some to flip and avoid community sales where locals get a chance to get things they may not be able to afford for less to encourage reading not personal profit.
Our local book fair prices by the centimetre. They stack your books up next to a stick and the higher your stack is, the more you pay. I can't remember the price per cm but I do remember it's not worth buying thick coffee table books that way.
I have heard of fairs doing that pricing method. I find it so odd. Wouldn’t they be better to do all paperback $1 and hardcover $2 or something of the like. It would be so much easier for all the staff and volunteers helping that day and it’s just so much easier to shop with set prices.
To be kicked out because of excess purchases is a badge of honour.

I have learnt along the way. I've been selling books full time about 2 years now and have been through thousands of books. When you start niching down and learning the one genre thats when you really learn the most and retain the selling prices and develop an eye for the types of books that will sell.
We don’t seem to get many book fairs around my way which is a shame. Could be good fun! Kicking you out seemed a bit strange, must be people with too much time on their hands. At least you got plenty to keep you busy anyway.
There isn't many around me either unless I drive to Sydney which is about 3.5hrs away. They are fun though!

Never had a meat pie! Wow!!! I live the large print books and I sell heaps of romance books like that. I mostly sell the romance in bundles!

You might have had a different reaction if it had been the last day. Then maybe they'd be happy to see you take them away!
I did go back the last day in about the last 15-20 mins. They had fill a bag at that time to help clear them so I grabbed some bags full and when I went to buy them they said I would have to pay the full price as I was selling them. I said no I would either pay the fill a bag like everyone else or I'd have to leave them as they were too expensive for me as a seller.

Maybe they wanted to make sure kids that have parents that aren’t well off could afford to get some books too . I bet if you had stayed away from the kids stuff they wouldn’t of cared
I just wrote my first book titled “Meditation and Spirituality a Philosophy”. I am very keen to have it sent across to the book fairs. Lot of hard work and complicated. I live in India

I thought of you the other day mel. On the council pickup was about 50 boxes of books in bundles, excellent condition. I would have filled my ute but my wife would have divorced me. Was soo hard to not take them.

Too funny! It's like asking at a yard sale if I buy all the cds, how much are they and they decide they don't actually want to sell them! I guess this is worse.
We have a massive book fair here in Hobart, they charge by the cm of spine ($1 per cm haha). They are always hectic and the staff take it way too seriously for a book sale 😂
Also the point is to sell the books - complaining your buying too much is ridiculous!
When you see a person in a shark feeding frenzy, they got a funny feeling that you were there to make money off of them. That is the ire that a common person feels when resellers go in and buy up all the things. See the video through my eyes. I know that this is how you make a living. I understand. But it would be nice if you saw things through my common eyes.

I had the same experience at an Op Shop Clearance where they were throwing away all their unsold books for $5 per bag. I got heaps of books for an average cost of 4 cents each but would have happily taken way more off of their hands before they kicked me out lmao.
I organized a thrift at my church for years. I purposely priced everything at $1, $2 or $5 max for very special items so that the very poor in our community could afford to shop. Resellers always came and bought loads from us because of our prices. Some church volunteers were very angry about this because it’s extremely labor intensive collecting, sorting, pricing and setting up And breaking down sales… BUT I told my volunteers that as a church we’re actually supporting the small business owners more then the Mayors office. God will always provide. Poverty consciousness is a waste of time! Good luck 👍
I agree with most of what you say until the end. People who don't have much money could have bought their kids books for 20 cents but now they're going to sell for dollars and possibly out of their price range.
It looks as if God wasn't interested in providing books to the poor. Do businesses outrank individuals in God's mindset?
I'm watching this a year late, but after reading the comments and watching your video Mel I'm totally on your side. I think a lot of people outside Australia think book fairs are for poor people to make books affordable. Nope, here in Australia book fairs are usually run by charities who receive the goods donated second hand by the community and they use the book fairs to raise funds for their organisation and programs that they run. We have very well stocked libraries accross Australia in every town or city I've ever lived in so that books are available for free to borrow if anyone who can't afford to buy books has access to them. You're right, if the ultimate goal is to raise funds for the charity, it shouldn't matter that you bought them or 20 other people bought 2 books that totalled what you paid.

In Canada, you can ship within the country and save money by using Flat Rate Boxes. Hopefully your post office has the same. I sell model kits and role playing games. When I ship flat rate, I can stuff quite a few rpg books into one box. $26.00 to Quebec. Same lot in a regular box... easily $60 for the weight. Check it out.
We have flat rate and just have to choose a size - small, med or large. All our flat rate postage has 5kg weight limits (11 pounds).

I think it makes sense to go in and do one run of things you really want to get and then go back at the end of the eagle and grab anything left that no one else wanted. They can't argue with that. Three runs is a little much for me, though.
Why would you wait till the end to buy books nobody wanted? That's not how you run a business.
Resellers should have to wait until the last day of sales.
They could never monitor that. Some resellers buy bulk. Some resellers buy a handful. All resellers though help raise money for the charity event which is the intention of a sale.
why? because YOU thinks so? I think your paycheck should have half of your net pay given to charity...what do you think about that? it's just as "fair" as what your saying about resellers. reselling is a JOB...just like your job, no different. do you think resellers should not be able profit so they can live? then dont shop at ANY store because they ALL buy LOW and sell HIGH. be sure you donate ALL of your money to charity, because you are GREEDY if you dont.

One library book sale I went to I decided to look up some manga books. Found another niche. Bought $160 in books at $.50 each. Sold on ebay and made over $900.
I usually buy religious, spiritual, psychology, philosophy and occult books and do pretty well. Now that I see $$ in manga books those are the first I grab.
Those prices are way too high. Here,
$.50 for paperback, $1.00 for hardcover. Kids books are $.10 to $.25.
Manga sells for big money!! It’s getting harder to find for me but it’s always a great seller if you can find it!
I have a bolo for you! I'm currently trying to transition my store from books/collectables to clothing (it is way easier to find clothing in my area). I ended up botching the sale by declining/not seeing the offer, but the magazine called Bonsai (about bonsai trees, believe it or not) sells well! You can fetch from $8-10(USD) per book, even lotted up! Obviously consecutive issues is better, but it was a cool one i learned about recently!

Part of the charity is to make books accesible to people who otherwise cant afford to pay full price. You got greedy and they had to stop you.
They had thousands of books, many still in boxes not even put out. And I only had bought a few bags. The bags were not even that full as I fill them by weight not how many actually fit in the bag

What type of postage do you use? Regular Aus Post labels or eBay package labels? Love a detailed posting video, I swear I’m spending too much on postage.
I read several books a week, but it would have to be pretty special for me to buy it. I get all mine from the library because most of them I probably would not read twice.

I have never been to a book fair with pricing like that,so odd. The last one I went to here in my little (really LITTLE) town there was no pricing, it was by Donation. So you you took what you wanted and put whatever amount of money you thought was fair into a large jar. No one was even in the room. I really enjoy your channel, I dabble in selling books but nothing even close to what you are doing, you are living the dream,lol!
I think they probably want as much people as possible to have access to low priced books, it might not be about the Monet because that would not make sense
It’s hard to know but I always thought the intention was to raise as much money for the fundraising/charity. My money is the same as anyone else’s money. And I probably have much more of it to spend here lol.
I agree ,when I give books away to charity shops etc I like to think that people who wouldn’t be able to buy them at full price will be able to get the enjoyment out of reading something they wouldn’t have been able to afford, particularly that children whose parents can’t afford to buy them will have access to books. Books are so important in the early years. I would so much rather give them away for free than have a reseller sell them on at prices over and above what you might buy in a shop. I can’t believe resellers are selling them for $60+

This is the choice that some parents and or children have to make. So some children may wish for some books they are mostly expensive. That’s also not mentioning the elderly who are strict budgets w

If my idea is correct by selling books low priced for as a method of charity they are doing two charities at once 1 offering good priced on books to people that might otherwise not be able to by the same amount of books otherwise and 2nd raising money for another charity.

I just went to the book fest in Brisbane, if you have something like that down in NSW, it would be worthwhile checking out. I paid $1.00 per book on the last day and had 2 of those little shopping carts full and a backpack, and most prices were about $2.50 to $5.00 and premium books were a bit dearer but they don't care how many you purchase they even let you use a trolley (lol) and this runs for about 1 week.
$1 a book is the best. I had been hoping to travel to the Brisbane book festival this year to meet a friend but it didn’t happen. Next year I’ll be there with a van! Lol

hi, cool informative info, just a couple of questions, do you have to search every title on your phone individually or you have a scanner type tool ? with postage costs, do you have to have a certain account to get a cheap post amount ? thanx
I don’t have or use a scanner. I have been selling books full time for a couple years so I have a good knowledge of the books that do and don’t sell. If I need to look one up I just search for the recent solds on eBay.
I use Australia Post My Business to get postage discounts and I’m on the highest level due to the volume I sell.
Please don't hate on me, but I kinda get why they asked you not to go back. I think they feel it's unfair for other people who are coming for the book sale. If I go to a book sale and half the books are gone after the first morning I would be pretty sad. 🙈 of course I understand why you do it from a resellers perspective. I don't mean to say that you are doing anything wrong.

Not every place welcomes resellers. At least they sold a few bags to you and you got to have a nice lunch.
Books are 50% of my eBay business here in the US. I go to a lot of book sales to get my inventory. Most of them love dealers because we buy so many of them; some sales even have a special entry fee for dealers to pay to get in a day earlier (I have found it's always worth the extra fee). But very occasionally, a sale will say "no dealers allowed." I really don't understand that as, like you said, we are paying the asking price.
I was in a thrift shop the other day and inquired how much something was. The lady said, "Free since we can't guarantee it's complete." Well, I picked up all of them with the intent to give a donation since I could tell some were complete but it was going to take me time to sort the items out. The volunteer was speechless for a moment when she saw my cart was half full of free items. I rounded up to add in a donation, thus, not free to me since I decided to pay a little. I know their intention was to provide for the needy but they also know how many dealers come into their thrift shop to find items to resell. Unless something is marked, "Only take if you have a need on free items" or something like that, IMO, fair game. Cutting out dealers, how do they know who is a dealer and who is a heavy reader and who just likes to hoard books or other like items? :) It really isn't any of their business to ask.

@@HouseholdDog Agree if free. In this case, I donated so it wasn't free. If the items were a necessity or staple I would have walked away. In this case they were free because the thrift shop didn't know how to price them since some would be incomplete (unusable). With my purchase the shop gained more income. Yes, others missed out but no different than not being first at any other item. I took my changes that a good number of them were complete and sellable. :)
The ability you have to walk in and right away pick out books without scanning that are profit is amazing. I hope I'm half as good as you one day. Don't worry about the jealous people on here. They are too scared to take a risk or put in hard work to start a business, you are doing a great job 👍
