  • Every year representatives from governments and civil society organizations meet at the United Nations headquarters in New York to attend the Commission on the Status of Women. The CSW is an important space to evaluate what has been achieved and to make new commitments in the fight for gender equality. However, for these commitments to be effective it is important that they reflect the real needs of all women and girls.
For this reason, it is more important than ever that a diverse and truly representative group of young people are empowered to meaningfully engage with the CSW. After all, who can better communicate the challenges that we face?
There are many ways for you to get involved:
Think about how gender inequality affects young people in your country. Go out, collect evidence and stories. Start talking to others about possible solutions to these challenges.
Governments usually start their preparations for the CSW early, and many will host special meetings which you can attend, and where you can share the issues that matter most to YOU and your community!
If you are at the CSW in New York there are several things you can do:
You can attend the UN Women’s Youth Forum and contribute to the Youth Declaration which highlights what young people think is needed to achieve gender equality.
There are many side events where you can share your expertise: deliver statements or speak on a panel!
And most importantly, try to influence the commitments that are negotiated, as part of a government or civil society delegation.
