I really enjoyed this. Have been reading Edgar Snow since college and graduate school. Have read most of the "China Hands" including Nym Wales and Lois Wheeler Snow. In rrecent years have been collecting books by and about Edgar Snow. Good effort!!!.

Yes, he admits the overreach and authoritarianism of Mao, but in the end, Snow still comes off as an apologist for China.
Imagine a similar journalist, reimagining and as much as possible, reinterpreting Adolph Hitler as a good guy gone bad.
Would we stand, just watching, an intimate of Pol Pot interpreting or explicating him in any other than the most horrible light possible?
Mao is directly responsible for the deaths of scores of millions of his fellow countrymen.
Having said all that, I do appreciate this program as enlightening and progressive in the discussion of this interesting take on history.

Joe, is there any possibility, in your mind, that your attitude to the Chinese and particular Mao, could have been planted and cultivated by the anti Communist witch hunter Joe McCarthy. Your governments, schools, churches and media are geared toward demonising the CPC. This persecution has been ongoing for over seventy years and has transformed American away from thinking critically about the right other sovereign nations have to govern themselves. China, Rewi Allie and indeed Edger Snow have nothing apologise for. And the CPC should be applauded for its commitment to abolishing poverty and greatly improving the lives of all its citizen. Something the US as a developed economy falls pitifully short of.

Mao uplifted hundreds of millions of Chinese people and brought unity to China, saving it from colonial domination. You must understand that under Mao’s leadership China underwent a great transformation. The life expectancy increased rapidly and he improved economy.
You’ve stopped thinking, stopped using your brain, because of political taboos around communist leaders in the West.
Quit spewing western propaganda and seek truth from the facts
I’m not saying that you can’t criticise Moa but if you no actual understanding of the man, the history and the essentials of his actions then you will undoubtedly spew nonsense. It will not do! You must investigate the facts! You must not spew nonsense!
