Am I Crazy? Restoring a 500,000km Landcruiser 100VX. CV's, Wheel Bearings & Brakes.

- The process of restoring a nearly 30 year old Landcruiser 100 Series VX is a slow one, full of hiccups and parts that have done their duty diligently for years and are now in need of some Tender Love and Care! So any journey like that begins at the Terrain Tamer warehouse in Cape Town. In my case I get my friend Nicky and his son Andrew to help me fix my old cruiser! Well typically, but this time, behind the scenes I myself am learning to swing some spanners and getting myself greasey, because this episode is a hoot! We need to strip the hubs, change the wheel bearings, change the CV's but new brake disks and pads on, and get finalise our Torsion bar setup. The vehicle might be roadworthy, but that was just the very beginning!

My old Mercedes-Benz 240D required very little maintenance even at 768,000 km. And that was my overlander, even with 2WD only. I went to places where the Kroozer Klan opted out of, near Kommagas and Nigramoep. Almost any vehicle can go almost anywhere; before 1982, I could count 4x4's known to me on one hand. I don't understand the modern 4x4 craze. We overlanded in sedans and station wagons, 2WD with open diffs. The Kgalagadi (or "Kalahari" to the inept) was tamed with Landrover 108 and Ford F100 with 2WD open diffs. Kids nowadays call driving on dirt roads "off-road driving." A new level of insanity, driven by two small nuts, is taking hold of humankind. Call my crazy..... that's what I call the fraternity.
What you say is true However the cars built today are not able to handle the same roads as the older cars.
The modern 2 wheel drive bakkies on the other hand, is very capable - if you know how to drive

True but many guys do go places you really need a good 4x4. I think the biggest difference is in the past is we traveled with a lot less stuff which reduced weight. The older cars were lighter, they had higher clearance, suspension travel was greater and they had decent sidewalls. You must see how good vintage cars with wooden spoked wheels are. They were designed to travel where a horse and wagon could go.
Definitely worth making preventative maintenance. Ensuring my rig is sorted for every trip is confidence building that it will not let me down. Something less to worry about.
If you break the cv's in the bush , just remove the front propshaft and engage center diff lock
Awesome series, how about sharing the costs of the upgrades and showing the tally on money spent including the purchase price. Would be nice to compare the costs!
Noted! Purchase price was R130,000 and so far on parts I think we are sitting at about about 60k and 25k for tires (ouch)

The clunk could be the front drive shafts splines plus caps on the hubs. Check for play due to worn splines.

13.8L/100km would be a dream fuel consumption for my '96 petrol (1FZ-FE) 80 Series. With my full touring (aka overlanding) setup (ie. RTT, solar, aux battery system, drawer system, fridge, water, recovery gear etc.) - incl. 33" tyres, I average 20L/100kms. And on full beach/dunes off-road driving, that goes up as high as 29-31L/100kms. So the OEM 155L dual fuel tanks is most definitely needed to get any decent range from it. Terrain Tamer are the bees knees. You're so lucky to be sponsored by them. I pay full price. 😒 I'm not surprised you're falling in-love with your Land Cruiser. They're a great 4WD. I'm the 2nd owner of my 80 Series (but it's been with the family since new). She's a keeper.

The VX's are great cars, I just think the solid front axle is better for the rough rides...

I would have grabbed a 105; but I just can’t do the 1hz life, and the efi is too expensive. Plus I picked up the 100vx for R130k, a deal that meant I could keep my Hilux and get the cruiser, which just makes so much sense 👌🏻 and I am over the moon with the 1HDFTE a pleasure to drive, plenty of power and the fuel consumption isn’t too bad!
This guy doesn’t hit hard 4x4 tracks he does overlanding the IFS is better for touring versus hard 4x4 tracks.

@@kaidenchetty4572 maybe...but long drives on bad "touring" roads will also take their toll on an IFS setup, and electronics, etc etc. Anyway, all a matter of choice...whichever way, grab something, get out there and explore without too much of a plan!!!
The 100 series and 105 series Landcruisers are arguably the best (80's are maybe a bit tougher, but not as comfortable or nicely appointed as the 100/105) Landcruisers ever made.
Sure the Troopys have their place too.
Anyway definitely a great choice of a 4x4 or overlanding vehicle.
And the 1hd-fte is DEFINATELY THE Best Toyota Engine ever produced.

So far it’s R130k on the vehicle and about R100k on tires and parts

100 series are awesome land cruisers. One thing to be aware of is the brake master cylinder. Lots of info on MUD about it.

Did you change the Universal Joints on the drive shafts ? They are extremely important..
Not yet; will get there soon when we do the central drive line components
Of course it’s worth it. Basic vehicles that you can work on yourself are a dying breed. We gotta keep them on the road cos they aren’t making them anymore.

Have you had to do any work at all on the engine? If not, at what mileage do you expect to start looking at bearings etc? Is the turbo still original, or has it been upgraded.

Haven’t gotten to the engine yet; but I think pretty much everything is super standard

Sure thing, all the spare parts are from Terrain Tamer, in Capetown. We also use Cape Transmission for drive line related stuff and Snyman4x4 for any specialised Landcruiser stuff. My friend that helps me is Nicky and on occasion his son comes and helps out too! Nicky works for Terrain Tamer 👌🏻
How about replacing the engine and gearbox mounting ?
Good things to do at this age for sure! I have inspected the dif mountings and they seem alright; will need to check engine ones still 👌🏻

@@RoamOverlanding Was just wondering, the 100 is a great car. I have the 120 (Prado) myself with the V6. I can imagine parts on the 100 being similar in price, perhaps a bit more. You can't go wrong with the Land Cruiser platform.

Think it might cost alot of money eventually and due to the high mileage you will not being able to call you price cause focus is only going to be based on mileage ,unless you planning on keeping it forever.
