    Thank you for making such an informative and comprehensive comparison video. I found it very useful, and it has earned you a new subscriber. I currently reside in the US and have placed a $500 fully refundable deposit on a Volvo EX30 recharge.
    However, I am having second thoughts about my purchase and may request a refund after test-driving the car. The local Volvo dealer informed me that test drives won't be available until late spring or early summer.
    My main concern with the EX30 recharge is the absence of color options. I fell in love with the beautiful Sage Green color featured in the video, but I am told the only option interesting to me that will be available for the EX30 is Moss Yellow. Although I find it nice and unique, it might not be enough to convince me to buy the vehicle unless the driving dynamics and comfort are truly exceptional. In that case, I might consider a MINI Cooper SE instead, as MINI still offers a wide range of exterior and interior color choices.
    Despite this, the EX30 recharge appears to meet most of my requirements. It fits perfectly in my basement garage space, which has a maximum length of 4445 mm. As the EX30 is only 4233 mm long, I believe it provides enough margin to access the boot while keeping the garage door closed on a cold winter day in Maine. On the other hand, the XC40 recharge, which is only 207 mm longer, would require me to remodel the basement space at a cost of over $2,000 to access the boot with the door closed.
    Shopping for a new car should be enjoyable or, at the very least, interesting. However, as someone who is over three-quarters of a century old and shopping for what I assume will be my last new car, it has become a chore, and not solely on account of the sky-high prices.

    • @siasek

      Hi there, thank you so much for the great comment! I was also wondering how limited the color configurations are. Of course, I also like Sage Green the best, but it's available on our market only in a nonsensical configuration of equipment. 🫤
      I've also been watching the first tests of the EX30, which raise some concerns, as there are many complaints about high consumption. But so far I don't think there are enough of them to confirm this.
      Your garage sound interesting, I've seen a few solutions where they just made a niche where they tucked the front hood of the car. But I understand that these construction things are not easy. Definitely let me know how you ultimately decide and what car you get, fingers crossed for a good choice! 🤞

    I have the XC 40 recharge extended range model 24 for 14 days now. 82kw battery, 78 usable. real range 411 km, 510 km advertised. 200 kw fast recharge from 10% to 80% in 26 minutes. but if I had known the EX 30 was coming, I would have waited to testdrive it before choosing. Yes the XC 40 is a great and fun drive.

I do think the EX30 is a great deal if you don't need all that room of the XC40 Recharge, but at the same time you'd probably still be waiting to get it at this point

    @siasek I have a request, if you don't mind. There is a topic/spec that people do not talk about and I think it might be important or at least interesting. We know the engines kW, but nobody talks about the regen engine kW. It would be great to know if all cars have more or less the same, and how this might affect the range/consumption, one-pedal-driving (more powerful regen engines can have stronger breaking) and finally the price of the car.
    Thank you ❤

    • @siasek
      @siasek  9 месяцев назад

      It's definitely an interesting topic and I would love to do that, unfortunately there's not much real-world information available about it 🫤
      Anyway, in general, cruising, i.e. driving without recuperation is more economical, except when going down a steep hill, of course. I personally don't really like one-pedal driving, for example, because I don't like having to keep my foot on the accelerator pedal all the time.

    Great video, once again.
    I have a Model S, my parents an ID.4
    I cannot stand the VW nightmare of the car infotainment system and the horrible regen B mode (and don't get me started on the VW mobile App). The turning circle is great though. My point is that vehicle manufacturers (in the EU) think that if the IS supports Android Auto or Apple CarPlay then, there is no need to have good software...
    I would go with the EX30 just for that reason. It is frustrating when the software is thought to be complementary to the car, when they are the core, operative system, of the car.
    The Chinese are not screwing up on that. They will remove screens, have worse driving sensations,etc. But they give you tech and software.

    • @spoenk7448
      @spoenk7448 9 месяцев назад +1

      Volkswagen software is getting quite a bit better. I'm still on 2.4 which is under par but workable. 3.5 and up seem decent. Far short of Tesla, but it's also a car so I personally don't care that much.

    • @frangrau3750
      @frangrau3750 9 месяцев назад

      @@spoenk7448 that is great to hear. As the video said, so far the OTA updates have been really cosmetic, not substancial.
      I understand that for many people the software is enough, but just to connect to a wifi network is madness in that car. And to know that you are connected, there is no indication. The fact that you need to move your hand over the screen to have a X to appear to cancel a trip in the navigation is plainly dangerous. And entering addresses is worse than a 2010s Tom Tom GPS.
      The fact that you spend almost 50K and is this bad, is to be really angry. (Also that you cannot one-pedal drive, have illuminated buttons for the AC/volume, the quality of the interiors, it is just too much going wrong all at the same time)
      How much you get for your money should matter. And VW has invested lots of time and money to come up this short is astonishing. Also, they could have plainly copied Tesla, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay (or Chinese brands) interfaces instead of reinventing the wheel with something that I am pretty sure the focus groups flagged as bad. The first id3s were unusable.
      How is it possible that my 2016 Model S software was better in 2018 than an ID.4 in 2023?
      They have to get their act together... Quick.

    • @siasek
      @siasek  9 месяцев назад +1

      I had the same experience in a Cupra Born, the navigation was terrible. Finding an address and navigating it was so user unfriendly that I gave up after testing it for a while. Overall the car was insanely out of sync, I didn't expect such a strongly negative impression from the test drive. I arrived there in my e-Golf and the new Cupra was a much worse car. 😏

  • @PhillyBoy
    @PhillyBoy 9 месяцев назад +2

    I’d pick the EX30 but the fact it’s coming out of China for the first time concerns me a little at least for long term quality. What do you think? I’m also slightly concerned about the size. Its dimensions are slightly smaller than the XC40 but without seeing it in person, is it going to be that noticeable? What do you think?

    • @siasek
      @siasek  9 месяцев назад +1

      After my experience with Tesla, which has had significantly better quality coming from factories in China than from American factories, I wouldn't really worry about this. Plus, it's a Volvo - they have a very high standard of quality. There was a press event just a few days ago in Czech Rep. with a live introduction of the EX30 and the journalists were very impressed with the workmanship, considering the price. The only criticism I've heard so far is that the basic version of the seats looks a bit rubbery. But that's also the feeling I got from the Tesla Model 3 and the white interior. 😄
      Personally I'm especially excited about the Android Automotive. I tried it in the Polestar 2 and it was definitely the best and most straightforward infotainment I've ever operated!
      The EX30 may be smaller, but you can only really tell in the backseat where there's not much knee space, so it shouldn't be an issue unless you're driving someone in the backseat around a lot... so, maybe not the best choice for a family car, but other than that I don't think it should be much of an issue. What are your top priorities for a new EV?

    • @frangrau3750
      @frangrau3750 9 месяцев назад +2

      Yep, my Model S from the US had a lot of finish problems. Unbelievable for a car that expensive. I don't think China/US/EU is the problem, but the QA processes in place to deliver a good product.

    I’m really tempted by the EX30 as my next EV because the entry level is so reasonably priced. The Plus trim single motor standard range is £33,795. The cheapest XC40 Recharge is £11,800 more expensive. The biggest drawback for me on the EX30 is the boot size, not only is it smaller than the XC40 but it is quite narrow between the wheel arches, less than 1m. If I can’t fit my hockey goalkeeper bag in there, it could be dealbreaker. Ideally Volvo will bring out a new XC40 on a dedicated EV platform before I need to replace my MG4 in 2026 and then I’ll have a hard decision…
    With regards to 22kW AC charging on 3 phase, this is so rare domestically in the UK as to not be much use. Lots of places in Europe have 3 phase AC to the home as standard, but in the UK we only have single phase and it is expensive to upgrade, Most EV charging is done at home and therefore most is at 7kW

      Ah, right, someone's mentioned this before but I've forgotten as it was a while ago. That's a bit of a bummer, but I suppose not a deal breaker. Do you find the 7kw to be sufficient?
      I agree that The EX30 is tempting, but that trunk is rather small. I'd be curious whether the hockey bag would fit. If you ever go for a test drive you'll have to take your bag with you and test it! 😃

    There is an extra advantage that the bump in the floor gives you over a flat floor that every mechanical engineer can confirm. Rigidity. The flat floors can not compete with that and rely on the battery pack providing the extra required rigidity to the chassis with varying degrees of success.

    The EX30 has many more safety features than XC40. This is build up having an eye on 2024 safety regulations from any NCAP or IIHS safety criteria. The regulations are far more strictly than previous. Take a look at EuroNCAP 2023....ONLY 3 NEW CARS WERE TESTED! If you apply the same regulations to an 2020 5* rated car, you can take 4* with newer requirements.
