Took me 15 mins to do both sides on mine. Used a Xacto knife to cut without damaging the heating coil/wires, installed Domino grips ( yes, had to buy two), slipped them on using hairspray and everything is perfect including the heating.
i use pillow tops on every bike i ever owned. For this bike, i bought x2 and used both the throttle grips. Also f*cked up 1 heater element as well... lessons learned. Repaired/replaced now, but still using pillow tops!
Similar issue when buying Oxford heated grips for my aprilia shiver 750 2011. the OEM throttle tube has raised nubs that grip the grip to stop slippage, but unfortunately the Oxford heated grips are a solid unit, with no give and the raised nubs had to be completely filed off, in order to get the Oxford grip on, as the nubs made the diameter of the OEM tube larger.
Sorry Brian! Thank you for being honest and sharing this with us! Do you think a better alternative would've been to install aftermarket clipons, and preserve the stock if the bike goes back to street trim?
So been watching your vids for a while and usually agree but in this case you are just wrong. I have an s1000r with the heated grips as my daily, i had to replace my grips since they were worn out, went with the renthal ones, bought 2 sets, was hard but the clutch side was actually easier than the throttle side because they used less glue at the factory. just use some hairspray as lube to install them and make sure you take your time. It's really not a big deal my heated grips still work after changing grips
Wow! You weren't kidding, what a PIA that install seems to be. Ya know, BMW should have realized that people are going to mod this bike, that includes the grips. They really should have used that same heating element on the throttle side, for the clutch side, it looks like it works much better. You pay extra for heated grips (well it's included in a package that is extra $$). Now just for swapping out the grips he lost one side for heat. Bad on BMW in my opinion, both sides should have that nicer heating element, not some cheesy, thin wire wrapping around the bar. That bike is over $20 grand!!!! Sorry, I just had to rant a little.. if that were my bike that would bug the shit outta me that I lost heat on one side..my OCD would be off the chart 😂😂
Very informative thanks VAN .

This bike is for sure no fun to install grips on. - Van
Yea I went to install domino grips on my S1K and was like wtf when the clutch side was too small of a diameter.
IMO BMW way overengineered the damn grips. - Van

I bet this video will deter some riders from replacing the OEM grips with aftermarket. - Van
@@sportbiketrackgear without a doubt

The problem is the switch pod and throttle housing design. Even with aftermarket clip ons you will still have this same problem. - Van
Shoulda watched this first...
Total disaster! I am way to picky to ride like this. - Van

I would not replace the grips on the BMW based on this experience. All of the bumps on the throttle tube would drive me crazy. - Van
but you need Heated Grips for those cold, icy Grattan mornings in April! :D
Jimmy will be ok. - Van

If this were bike I would leave the grips stock for sure. This would drive me crazy! - Van
