- In this episode we begin work on Springwood's international airport. I model the layout off Sydney Airport and follow the taxi ways and runways pretty closely. At the end of the episode I present the airlines that will be gracing Springwood's air.

Just so you know, runway numbers depend on the runway's orientation, so a runway facing exactly west it's number would be 9 because it is 90 degrees from north, and one facing east would be 27 because it is at 270 degrees.
I assume he kept the numbers from the real airport.
I'm pretty sure you know what you're talking about and just typed it weirdly, but here is a better explanation.
Runway numbers are determined by the direction you would be landing or taking off into.
The direction is determined by the degrees on a compass N - 0, 360 E - 90 S - 180 W - 270
So, if you are landing on a runway that faces direct east which is 90 degrees on a compass you would land on runway 09.
or if you are taking off on a runway facing direct south (180 degrees) it would be runway 18.
Also if the runways are parrallel it should've marked with the letter L,C, or R on it which represents Left,Centre, and Right. And if it have more than 3 parallel runway the runway number have to be at least 1 number different than the other runways for example like the runways in Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta Intl. Airport (KATL/ATL)

Okay, level 127 nerdery incoming. Loving the airport so far, the general layout is very convincing, there are some minor inconsistencies however.
The single most glaring one is that you wouldn't have what we call "suicide ops" if you can avoid it. Suicide ops is the traffic flow when departing and arriving aircraft are going in opposite directions. Usually traffic flow is aligned into the wind for easier operation (slower ground speed), so making all your runways be used in the same direction would make a lot of sense. Crossing runways aren't an issue in that regard, and as yours is at a 90° angle to the rest of the airport anyways you can leave that as is.
Now for the runway markings, they're mostly fine apart from the numbering. As far as I can see you used 34R for all the ends, which doesn't make sense. The runway identifier always consists of two numbers and may contain a letter. The numbers indicate the magnetic heading of the runway divided by 10, meaning if the magnetic heading of your runway is 335° (as is the case at Sydney Kingsford-Smith) your identifier would be 34, rounded of course. Now the letter can be either L, R or C standing for Left, Right or Center to be able to tell parallel runways apart. Considering all that it becomes obvious that every runway at an airport will have two distinct and unique identifiers (also makes ATC instructions a lot easier to give). The pair of identifiers will always be criss-crossed for the letters and the difference of the numbers will always be 18, so for example you could have 4 runways, 16L-34R, 16C-34C, 16R-34L and 07-25. If there now was to be a fourth runway added parallel to the three existing parallels it would have to be numbered differently as the letters are exhausted, common practice is to just increase the number on either end by one so you'd end up with a runway 35-17. That principle can for example be observed at Atlanta (KATL). Sidenote; there's never a runway 00, that would always be 36, even if the compass indicates 002° if lined up with the runway.
For the runway lighting, there's nothing wrong with it, it could theoretically exist like that but most likely not on a larger airport. Runway and taxiway centerline lighting is a very common technique to make operating on the airport at night and in dense fog easier. Taxiway centerline lights are colored green, runway centerline lights white with the last 3000ft alternating red and white and the last 1000ft all red. You also missed the stopbar lights which would be placed over the yellow stopbars you placed at the entries of the runways and would be steady red with a yellow alternating flash double light unit off the side, not sure if there's a prop for that, kinda doubt it.

An ILS runway lighting system is a like lit up Christmas tree on the runway, the approach lighting with strobe lights, the alternating yellow and red center line transition, and the touch down zone lights... then the blue edge and center green taxi way lights you can see off to the side.... I don't think Boise has green center line taxi way lights though... at least not the last time I flew which was a while ago. I don't remember them. Just the blue edge taxi way lights.
My local airport, Boise Idaho has two parallel runways 10L/10R one is ILS equipped and the other runway has no precision approach equipment other than its VASI.
The one lit like a Christmas tree... the other runway at night has the very minimum... and on that runway by the final round out and into the flare is like sinking into a deep abyss of darkness. The other runway is like rounding out and flaring on a lit up box store parking lot in Vegas.
Localizer equipment is only for 10R... it's opposite end 28L has a less elaborate approach lighting... probably to indicate and assist with a published ILS back course procedure that is available for 28L. Landing 28L can still be fairly dark... if I recall 28L doesn't have the brilliantly lit up touch down zone lighting... or maybe that it dimmed or off that night I was flying.
Anyway, I think the lighting systems at airports are pretty. All those lights ;)

Springwood Int’l Airport History:
The current site of the airport used to be swamp land until 1931, when an Air Force base was erected. Over the next 20 years as the land around the base transitioned from farmland to suburbs and flighter jets became a thing, more and more people began to complain about the noise of jets overhead. The public wanted the airfield gone but the government insisted it should stay. Eventually a compromise was reached and the base would be re-purposed as a regional airport. The new airport opened in 1959 as Springwood County Regional Airport. Air travel boomed, tourism population growth skyrocketed, the government established a new airline to capitalise in their new booming industry. Springwood National Airlines was founded in 1962 with a fleet of regional planes on short haul flights. Demand for air travel didn’t slow down as government predicted and the airport went through two major upgrades; an extension to the existing terminal and a brand new international terminal to allow overseas flights and a new runway was built on reclaimed land in the sea, construction was completed in 1968. At this time Springwood National Airines re-branded as Air Springwood and ordered a new fleet of 737’s, DC-9’s, and the new long ranged DC-10. Springwood County Regional Airport also was renamed to Springwood International Airport in 1969 when Air Springwood flight 10 landed from Sydney Australia, not only was this the airlines first international flight but also the airports first as well. Over the next decade more and more jumbo jets became common place, and pretty soon those same residence who lived around the airport were back with the same problem they had before....they were not impressed. Growth slumped in the 70’s as a result of the oil crisis but kicked back into gear in the early 80’s. The government privatised Air Springwood as a result of the oil crisis as well. Which brings us to today, Springwood International Airport is loved by the city folk and hated by its surrounding residence, but in the end its a perfectly sized airport for the city of Spring wood

Looking amazing and I'm glad I could help out with the planes! And let me set the record straight on the plane types - 737-200, 747-100, DC-10, DC-9 (late model, could also be an early MD-8x series plane).

Saw this after I replied to the vid! I have a question. The DC-10 models all look very similar to each other. The only real difference is in the arrangement of the landing gear. Starting with the DC-10-30, there was an additional set of gear, like the nose wheels, centerline under the main wings. (The DC-10-30 and onwards had more fuel tanks and other equipment which made the variants heavier). Is this gear present on these models? If not, that's a DC-10-10. If it does, then it could be either a DC-10-30 or -40. As for the DC-9.... The model is too short for most of the MD-8X series other than the MD-87. (MD-8x has a weird aesthetic-- very long fuselage, wings set far to the rear just looks odd-- MD-87 was a shorter fuselage, more like the original DC-9s) However, there is another version of the DC-9 which looks like the model here and that's the Boeing 717-200 (Originally the MD-95). Anyway, the difference between the DC-9s/MD-8X and the B717-200 is in the engine nacelle visually (Prior to the 717, the series used a version of the JT-8D and they had the reversers as seen on the 737-200 in this pack) Otherwise, chances are from how it looks, it is probably a DC-9-40.

The DC-10 does indeed have the centerline wheels, and was based off the -30. As for the DC-9, it's a bit of an amalgamation of DC-9 and MD-8x parts, though it's probably closest to the DC-9-40 or DC-9-50 (in reality, I just shrunk the fuselage of my MD-80 a bit).
Awesome. You know you could add the MD-80 to this pack as is and be good? Also, as an aside, have you thought about making a pack for older aircraft? Like say the early '60s?
I know - I wanted this to be completely different than the regular BPP stuff. I do want to do more vintage stuff, but in the 60s, there'd be too many propeller planes that I don't want to do until I can animate the props spinning. Next retro pack will probably be 707, 727, L-1011, and Concorde as a sort of late 70's early 80's theme.
That airport is a thing of beauty, as are the planes. Bravo!

I have always wanted to make such an underpass, as we also have this at Amsterdam Airport. As for the airport i am pretty impressed with what you did given the limitations the game throws at you, so you won't hear a comment from me ;)

One thing to change at 26:49 , Flip the direction of the landing jet and start the takeoff from the very end.
From my experience, the airliners line up on the top line, waiting for others to land, then they take the runway :)

The white boxes are actually yellow on the sides and could be compared with streetsigns they are only at intersections to show the name of the crossing taxiway or runway;)

Holly CRAP!! I wish modern city builders would tools tools and guides so everyone would be able to come up with such awesome looking cities. But at the moment this means only one thing, the one who made this has incredible talent.

I like the way how you made fake taxiways which are close to runway but they are not connected. When I was building my airport I was aware that planes will take the shortest route as possible but I wanted to have realistic taxiways so I made them 3 units going one way and other 3 units going the other way. But it is a lot of work and your idea is great. You simply connect taxiway to runway without really connectin it by node. Then you make only one "real-connected" taxiway from runway and you force the plane using that because it is the only one working taxiway. Very good idea I love it :)
Also using pedestrian paths as service roads is also cool idea :). Concrete roads looks much much better but you have to ban the traffic on them.
My recommendation for you is: make wider taxiways and probably runways too. At least the taxiways you should do. You can use pedestrian paths or ploppable pavement/asphalt or concrete brush. CSL has very narrow taxiways and runways and making them little bit wider makes it look great.

Nice work! Very good looking airport, especially the highway under the taxiway :) Just a side note though - the "boxes" that's spread out on the sides of the taxi/runways is actually taxi/runway signs!

This looks amazing! My apt very close to Sydney domestic airport. Sydney Domestic airport terminal and international airport terminal are very small, very simple. When I first came to Sydney, I felt that walked out of the airport just taking a few steps. But I love this runway, I can see from my balcony to the sea over there. I look forward to all your next work.

Those little boxes by the runways are called Papi's they usually go at the end of runways on the landing side as they are used by pilots in clear weather to determine the glide path to the runway. Great work on the beautiful city.

Add some tall fencing around the highway that goes under the runways, for safety issues. Thanks for the inspiration, hopefully gonna build my airport soon.
Check my airport out. My airports on the most dangerous airports list. Anyways I have a road on the side of the runway that has industrial and office buildings beside it, and an opera house opposite that Too. To qualify as a pilot at my airport you have to be the best.

Taxi ways are generally closer to the runways and curve towards the runway, unless the taxiways are connecting then they do seem to go straight, and runways have little arrows on each side to dictate the direction that side of the runway allows. They also have stone or some sort of tile area at the ends of the runways called launchpads, they might hold the arrows.

The rectangular boxes on the sides next to the taxi are signs that show what taxiway you are on and what the next one is. They are only at taxiway intersections though, so keep only the ones at intersections.

I stopped playing Cities Skylines beacause i sucked at it and i never really got the airport right but i love watching cities and this is the best airport i have seen so far, keep up the good work!
That’s actually a perfect scale, because if you compare the scale of yours to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, NC, you’ll note that the airport itself is actually also larger in footprint than the primary downtown area of the city. So I personally think you nailed the scale. I also love how you ran the interstate under the runway/taxiway.
Thess rectangular boxes are used to navigate pilots through the taxiways. Just like streets, taxiways have names to but they’re named like Alpha Bravo Charlie etc.

The boxes next to the runway you noticed on maps are signs to indicate the name of the runway or taxiway so that pilots can navigate given the instructions by the atc. Similar to street signs but for airplanes
