    You should visit le jardin botanique and le parc Maisonneuve, I'd say the parc is one of the main free place people from Rosemont and Hochelaga go to. It's such a great place. Also the jardin botanique is very special at the moment, it's usually full of tourists but due to travelling restrictions right now, it's such a peacefull place to visit.

  • @maxrockatansky2003

    The drink you had in the park was called 1642. That was the year Montréal was founded by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve. Nice how the universe brought those things together: you choosing a drink named for the founding of Montréal and the borough you're exploring that shares its name with the founder.

    Bobo is an accronym that stands for "Beau chic beau genre". It basically means bourgeois. It gets thrown around a lot these days in Hochelaga because the neighbourhood is rapidly gentrifying (e.g. little cafes, yoga studios etc.) That neighbourhood used to be the poorest in the city, and the aforementioned gentrification has driven rent way up, which forces old timers, people who've lived there all their life, out of the neighbourhood.
    *edit* I'm sorry to say, but if a restaurant in Hochelaga has a blackboard outside and serves cashew chicken sandwiches instead of steamed hot dogs and poutine, it's definitely Bobo.

    • @TheNewTravel
      @TheNewTravel  3 года назад +2

      Yeah I thought it might have been an anti-gentrification thing. In Mexico there's a word sort of like that, they say "fresa" (meaning strawberry) for people who are upper-class and unwanted in certain neighbourhoods haha

    That's my neighbourhood!!! I've been living in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve for the past 15 years and I can tell you its reputation is a bit dated. It used to my a tough neighbourhood in the 80's and 90's but not anymore. There are still some rougher patches here and there but I wouldn't consider it as dangerous.

    I'm practically crying. I used to live in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve not far from Place Valois (where you got your pannini), and I miss this place very-much. It's very safe here, the worse that can happen someone will jump in front of you begging for money. I preferred buying them food, which was always gracefully accepted. My friends live in H-M, so I get to go there. Free Montreal Symphony Orchestra (I miss Kent Nagano)concert in August outdoors at the esplanade of the olympic stadium. In fact, there is freguently stuff going on there. Heated outdoor skating rink in the winter, rave parties...The parc you were at has petanque courts. You must have passed by the underpass, I'm sure, did you see the amazing wall art? Ontario street freguenly has street closures for family fun activities in the warm months, such as acrobatic shows, crafts for kids, etc etc.

    Nice! I really enjoyed wandering around Hochelaga when were were there a few years ago. Our only disappointment was the tower at the Olympic Stadium - I would not recommend going up top. It is way too expensive. You can get just as good a view for free on Mt. Royal. Your next mission: try St. Henri. We stayed on another trip to Montreal and loved it - especially the grand parks and the awesome trails along the Lachine Canal (with the St. Ambroise craft beer patio). The long rows of old red brick houses in St. Henri reminded me of the great Canadian novel The Tin Flute by Gabriel Roy - a must read while you are in Montreal!

    Nice video Dan! I've moved to this part of town from the ave Papineau (Gay village) last week. I recognize all these spots.
    My girlfriend is Québecer and she mentioned this area has become alot less ghetto than it used to be.
    I'm for sure gonna check out that sweet shop (fried eggs 🍳 and cola bottles) are you for real!!! 🤪 what's the name?

    That was awesome.... try NDG...for a change...English area of Montreal... ;) I lived all over Montreal, form Downtown to the east (Anjou ) to the West, ( Westmount ) ... I loved it all. Now living on Vancouver Island...yup..on the other side of the country. Missing Montreal so much. ;(

      @ Its not that big a move, if you have made up your mind...one mile after another mile... Now Australia or New Zealand...that would be quite the move. But anyway, I wasn't even living in Montreal anymore when I made that move. I was living in beautiful historical village of Merrickville in Ontario on a 50 acres farm.Vancouver Island is awesome if you love the rain, bears and mostly cougars. My co worker lost a goat to a cougar last week... ;( we have plenty of deers, and rabbits...go figure...Its a bit wild out here except for the towns, but even the towns...and cities...it doesn't stop the cougars from coming over. I would never run on a trail here without bear spray. You can use it on cougar too, but you better be fast...cuz the cougar is always hiding... ;(Montreal like Toronto, are big cities, and am done with that for sure ! you wonder how it is...just do it. Its doable, we only live once ..I think ;)

    Oh Maisonneuve was my dad's old neighborhood when he was a kid before moving to Northern Ontario. I've yet to visit the area. I'm in Halifax now and my trip was canceled by Covid. Maybe next summer I'll drive up.
    What's your fave neighborhood? I'd like to plan a month long stay at some point, I really don't use my French enough anymore.

    A "Bobo" is a bourgeois/bohème ( ie :a middle class guy who moves to a working class neighborhood with the side effect of making the rent more expensive )

  • @lou-annmorin33
    @lou-annmorin33 3 года назад

    As a person who grew up in Hochelag (said without the "a" and the "Maisonneuve" vs "HOMA" also used as a diminutive by condo builder as a attempt to give a "bobo vibe" similar to "SoHo" in NYC), and who still live there behind the Taqueria, it feel strange to see it from the Youtoube eye of a visistor. Its a tourist spot and its not. Its not because its one of the most "common Montrealers" place, but it is because its home of the Olympic Stadium, the Biodôme and just across Sherbrooke is Parc Maisonneuve (on of the biggest park in Montreal) and Jardin Botannique.
    For la Taqueria, they temporarly moved to Ste-Catherine because the building (a icon in the area because it was a Dairy Queen that hosted a Just Noodle and now a Tacos with the same Dairy Queen recognizable architecture) is going to be destroyed and replaced by a building for low incomes person with Taqueria on the street level.
    For the "dangerous part", it has this reputation because it was for a long time the home of the Hells Angels (in the 90's, a 11 years old kid was killed by a explosion of a car from biker's war). But today its pretty safe. But it depend where. If you go south Of Ontario, you will have more shadowy places. Ste-Catherine and Nicolet, a gay couple was victim of violence 3 years ago, there was a drug house that went out on a fire in this area. Ste-Catherine in Hochelag is also one of the last place where street sex workers still work, but they are not dangerous (more in danger themselves from bad clients). But these are exceptions that i quoted here and usually its really safe. Bike theft is a plague everywhere in Montreal and thieves usually prefer stealing on the Plateau or Rosemont because they have more luxourious bikes. But if one bike is easy to steal (not using a U lock that include the tire and the frame), a lot of addicted people will take it.
    Hochelag is also a place with a high rate of LGBTQ2AS+ peoples because most of them where kicked out of Le Village who is now unafordable (only white over 50 gay men that are often queer and trans phobics can afford "le Village" : Queers, trans, lesbians and younger have being pushed to the east. You also have Centre-Sud between le Village and Hochelag and its fun to walk Ontario street from Village to Hochelag passing by Centre-Sud (that is considered one of the poorest neighbourghood localed between Papineau et Frontenac subways, but not as poor as Parc-Extension that have the highest level of people living in poverty in Canada, mostly newly arrived immigrants).
    Hochelaga-Maisonneuve is also one of the oldest area in Montreal : in Hochelaga is where mostly manufacture french quebeker workers lived and Maisonneuve was mostly for bourgeois (lawyers, doctors, etc.). You have a lot of historical places, like one of the oldest library (a controversy is that they are building add-ons to it), le Bain Morgan (and Morgan park), Marché Maisonneuve are some of the oldest landmarks in Montreal after Vieux-Port.
    So Hochelag is a mixed bag of peoples that we are trying to preserve (and that we fear will go away with gentrification). Bourgeois where always part of this mix even in 1870 when Hochelaga was created, but lets say they are taking more space than before).
    PS : Arohma was attacked with paint when it came on Place Valois about 13 years ago because it was considering "Bobo", but since then, i think it was left alone by the more radical anti gentrification groups.
    PPS : one major landmark in Hochelag is la Pataterie. Its a kitch fast food that have being around since 1984 and its the subject of ongoing jokes to a point where it became almost the symbol of the area. Its also good for its french fries.
