On the west side, beyond Wellington, you have a few kilometers long uninterrupted strip of nature and parks along the St-Laurence: huge outside public dance floor, Natatorium (art deco outside pool) and more. If you go to the western limit of Verdun, up to LaSalle, you also have surf on the standing waves and kayaking in the rapide of Lachine.

So much things to say and to show you about Verdun. The famous "Librairie de Verdun", take an ice cream scoop at "Boboule", go to see / learn salsa dance in the park, take a bike and ride on the St-Laurent river side, try the food from Magdalene Island, come back again for another tour. I'm living at Montreal for 20 years, I lived in several neighbourhoods, Verdun is my favorite follow by " La petite Italie".

Thanks for sharing. My father spent his childhood in Verdun in the 1930s. I believe he grew up on Catherine St. His family moved to a farm in Newport VT when he was around 12 and then to Massachusetts when he was 16. I was surprises to find out that he grew up in a city as I can only imagine him as a country boy that grew up on a farm. It’s fun watching your video and seeing maybe some of the areas that he may have walked along. Thanks for sharing.

The crane is used to make is easier to bring construction material sheets (plywood, and mostly drywall panels - i.e. panneaux de gypse) up an apartment. They just lift it next to an opened window (usually if it's a large renovation the window will be removed anyway) so the workmen can simply unload the panels into the apartment (that is, instead of walking up the stairs). In your video, it appears the renovation is on the first floor (rez-de-chaussée) but why not, still an easy and fast way to unload the truck.

Also mory's pizza was my main pizza place since I was a kid and it was tradition to get a pizza slice every halloween. Also Wellington street changed a lot. It used to be a lot of video stores game stores and even music stores and we had 2 sidewalk sales every summer but now they changed it and it's no longer for us locals and is now for rich tourists with fancy restaurants and stores that locals can't buy anymore sadly also we've had bars in verdun since before I was born and we have way more than for but the food thing is correct. All bars have to serve food but bars have been around in verdun for more than 30 years also somewhat know the owner of maltehops he owns a metal band too. There is actually a "moving day" (sort of) in Quebec. Due to some old Napoleonic-era law or something, July 1 (Canada Day) is the day that all leases end or start, so it's when just about everybody who is going to move has to move. It is a nightmare. The streets can be full of people frantically trying to move out/in and anything having to do with moving (such as renting a truck) is extremely expensive.

Dan, question(s) for you. I spent a week in Montreal years ago, and loved it. There are two areas that I loved that I can't remember what/where they are. One was an area with closed off streets and lots of cafes, cobblestone streets. Not down by the old town, I think it was up in the north part of the city, but not *very* far (I walked there from the financial area). South and east of the river. Any idea what that might have been?
The other place I remember I think was called Crescent. Street lined with restaurants. I think I ate at Weinstein & Gavino's. Is that all still there? It was an awesome place and the sun set sort of straight down the road toward the St Lawrence.

@@DeeLuscious Good to know, on both points. I just stumbled on it, and it was a nice evening . I found my notes from them, about 11 years ago, an October night, here they are verbatim:
So...I was getting a not so great impression. After wandering for well over an hour, and passing countless restaurants and bars, I didn't see anything that seemed worthy. I remembered reading that rue Crescent was interesting. So I stuck out my hand and a cab stopped and I said "Crescent."

OK, so this was a good idea. Crescent is a happn'n place. The streets were packed and there were cafes all up and down it. It was a beautiful night, as I heard someone say, "maybe one of the last good nights for eating outside." I walked up and down the street, maybe ten blocks, and there must have been 50 restaurants. At least 30 had cafes. The one that most caught my eye had a huge pack of obvious tourists in front of it -- I could have sworn they just got off a cruise ship or a tourist bus. So I moved on. On my way back up, it appeared quieter -- I think they put all the tourists inside. So I approached the matre de and he put me at a great table at the far end of the cafe, overlooking everything.

The place was called Weinstein & Gavino's, and doing a little research now I can see it is a fairly hot spot.

Surveying the situation. To my left were two young guys. One (I later surmised) was from Portugal. I think the other was German (or Swiss). They were plotting some new Internet business...in between scopin' out the chicks and making crude comments (quietly, they were not offensive). To my right was a rather pathetic pair, a man and a woman in their 40's, both apparently married but on business. I overheard the whole thing as they clumsily stumbled toward the point of managing their night together. It was actually fairly ugly, but I got a bit of amusement out of it anyway (mostly when the guy realised I was overhearing everything and became embarrassed). All around were mostly young people, pairs of men eating dinner together (why is it in every country on earth except the US men are comfortable like that?), pairs of women (mostly getting stared at by the men... most of them were skimpily clad so I guess they didn't mind), couples, a few solos like me.... It was nice.

The waiter was cool. I ordered a caesar, penne with mushroom sauce, and a pinot grigio. The service was great and the food was fantastic, especially the pasta.

Looking out across the cafe and down Crescent, I could see the skyscrapers of downtown Montreal. Then, coming right up in the very narrow sliver between two of the tall buildings...a full moon! It was incredible. Beautiful, big, bright, clear...slipping right between the buildings. I wanted to point it out to everyone, but I decided it was just for me anyway. At one point, one of the waiters saw me staring, turned, looked up, and seemed in a trance for just a minute...then ran off to more work. The moon rose over the course of my meal and slipped off to the right and disappeared.

About two buildings down from the restaurant was an apartment building, with balconies. While the moon was rising, I watched a couple standing out on their balcony drinking wine. I could only see their silhouettes, but they were clearly enjoying the night, and it added to the "romance" of the feeling.

I walked most of the way back to the hotel, but finally gave up and got a cab the last ten blocks.

I lived in Verdun for 2 years and it was a really cool place to stay. Wellington is the bomb. It's the kind of place where you don't ever really need to leave to live life. You have pharmacies, groceries, bars and restaurants. Unfortunately I have to be honest and say that the level of racism there is higher than other areas of Montreal. I have actually seen Nazis in full regalia on the streets. Many of the older people that live in Verdun are also quit racist. If you're not white it might not be the happiest place for you.
