  • Hello friends! I have collected quite a bit of spindles over the past couple of months. And I want to store them safely and display them nicely. In a shed I found a dingy little wooden shelf, which posed the perfect solution to my problem. So in today's video we're making a dainty little support spindle display and storage out of trash! I'll take you along while I turn this shelf into a rack, wet felt a little cushion for the spindles to rest on, and spray paint the whole thing. Which was a first to me. How do you store and display your spindles?

    To stop the domino effect, you could stitch lines between the spindles to tighten up the elastic. Looks great!

      I could indeed. Was thinking of glueing some big beads to the back rod to stop them there as well

    I have a very cute hedgehog pencil holder, that I use for my drop spindles. It has holes on its back, so the spindles are the spikes. I’m not describing it well, but it makes me smile!

    Lovely weekend project, even better that you were able to recycle some trash! I'm also the resident crafter that everyone gives their relatives things to. I was just given someone's grandma's table top sewing machine. So now i have three...😂

    Oh gosh, one of those spindles is not like the others 🙈 Thank you for including it in the video. I feel like it's not good enough to be amongst your antique or professional spindles, but that could be my anxiety talking 😅

    i have my drop spindles in a deep tall wicker basket with a handle. mostly mine are homemade from me and my hubby. some are from chopsticks i got from a chinese eatery and i put some small round wheels on them from the craft store. some are long dowels and bigger wooden discs. some are made from dvd's and a dowel. my most beautiful ones are a couple of zebra wood and they are turkish spindles. one is a 3 d plastic drop spindle. i have none like yours friend. the supported spindle. i love them all so much. i think i need to paint the ones we made. i loved seeing u felt wool. the little shelf is darling too.

    I bought a couple rotating paintbrush stands on Etsy for my spindles. I like the idea of the felt pad for protecting the tips! I thought you would put some sort of grid across where the rattan sides end. Depending on how tight your elastic is, you could create a section for each spindle just by twisting the elastic, or you could add several beads onto the elastic and slip a spindle between beads.

    • @MijnWolden
      @MijnWolden  2 месяца назад

      I thought about beads, but don't have beads with a broad enough opening yet...

      They're both different techniques. Quite a bit of spinners will advice you to learn on a spindle, so that you don't have to worry about treadling and can just focus on the drafting.

    Really nice! 🤩
    I would have overcomplicated things by rigging individual loops onto the back horizontal support to hold each spindle. The elastic is much more efficient, because it doesn’t limit you to a fixed number of loops. More potential for extra spindles. 😊

    • @MijnWolden
      @MijnWolden  2 месяца назад +1

      I am still thinking of some kind of loops or something, because they do have a tendency to fall over when you look at them wrong

      @@MijnWolden - Perhaps some thin elastic (the type that is covered in fabric/thread, aka ‘onderbroeken-elastiek’, also often used to make face masks in the high points of the pandemic. Also often used for smocking in sewing) could be slip-knotted around the top back rattan rod? Easy to add or remove as well. And… it comes in white. It’s quite thin and barely visible. Would that he an option?

    Do you have any recommendations for sources on drafting on old spindles?
    I have one without a hook, or a wheel, or a noch on the top, one of those that looks like just a sharf that's a little ticked near one end and I'm not sure what to do with it.

      Either with a halfhitch knot, or could it possibly be support spindles that you spin in a bowl?
