Mail from India: Ladakhi spindles, Yak Fiber and spinning stories (ft. @woolaroundtheworld )
Hello friends! I received the most exotic package yet: spinning tools (spindles and bowls) and fibers from India. More specifically: phangs from Ladakh, yak fiber, camel hair and himalayan sheep wool. They were send to me by @woolaroundtheworld, in the most generous way imaginable. Rica also had prepared some blends of the yak fiber and the sheep wool, so that is what we will spin in this video as a first foray into these tools and fibers. But more adventures with both the yak and the phangs will be in the future. For this yak fiber is so soft and warm I really want to knit myself a warm winter hat with it. What do you think?

Handspun Heaven: Knitting a Sweater with my Blue Texel Yarn
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.21 час назад
Hello friends! After the crazy weeks that were Tour de Fleece 2024 I now end up with a huge pile of yarn. And this is the first finished knitted object from the yarn we spun during TDF. I present to you: a nineties cropped cabled sweater. Flair trend breimode knew what it was doing with this knitting pattern, and I knew that the Blue Texel Yarn that I spun would be perfect for a cable knit swea...
Starting with Natural Dyeing: How to find Easy and Foolproof Dyeplants in the wild?

Are there some easy plants that grow in abundance in suburban environments? Yes there are! And in this video I'm taking you on a little suburban backyard safari and showing you some easy recognisable dye plants to start your natural dyeing journey with. ...
I found Mohair at the Thrifstore: let's spin thrifted fiber

Hello friends! When in the Thriftstore on a Lucky Thursday afternoon I found a little bag of mystery fiber for 1.5 euros. My suspicion is that this mystery bit of wool is actually mohair. So yes, the hairs of an angora goat. Let's scour, comb and spin this mohair and see what yarn we get from this Thrifting Treasure. Did you ever find spinning fiber? And you know, when I wonder about a thing, it t...

As people have stated, Lobster mushrooms (Hypomyces lactiflourum) have tons of great colors that change depending on the age of the sample. Even though you can't get them in Europe, it shouldn't be too hard to get them from Etsy, or someplace like that. H. lactiflourum used for dyes are usually cheaper than the ones used for eating. Chanterelles are also known to have dye-worthy properties, and should grow in Europe Boletus edulus, aka the King bolete, or Penny bun, has a reddish-yellow reaction with ammonia as a catalyst, and that should be common in your neck of the woods, too en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mushroom_dye

My current dopamine project is the Joinery top by Yumiko Alexander. I'm not 100% happy with the color (blah baby blue and white - so blah), but it should be very wearable. I would have preferred a charcoal color, but my LYS didn't have that color in stock, and I had to start NOW! Well, before I went on vacation. I'm back now, didn't knit much while gone. Actually, the color is growing on me. It's more of a pale aqua than pale blue. And my other dopamine project is weaving with some of my handspun singles that were dyed in patches of neon colors. My warp is white cotton, and the weft is making really great stripes. This is going to end up as a summer top, or maybe a summer dress, depending on how much fabric I end up with. It is so fun to weave - I wish I hadn't procrastinated on getting the warp on the loom - now I'll have to wait until next summer to wear whatever it ends up being!

My uncle gives me a few of his fleeces per year, I also have an agreement with another livestock owner who sells me about 7 alpaca fleeces for £20-25 per year and I can only do about 4-5 fleeces per year if I’m well enough and I don’t spin all that, but I do scour, clean, card (multiple times) dye and card again before making 50g packs to sell.

  • @dawnmrodgers

This happens everywhere. I’m in Yorkshire and I know a few local farmers who don’t get much for their fleece and don’t sell to love fibre processors because they don’t know how to get in touch with them.

    • @MijnWolden
      @MijnWolden 11 часов назад

As long as the global South and east keep on being exploited for cheaper labour and vague enough production processes I don't think this issue will be resolved. Local farmers won't get fair compensation and local breeds will be still outbred by ''commercially viable'' ones like Merino...

This is so cool! The phangs got me to wondering: would you ever consider DIY-ing yourself a phang to the size, weight and length that would conform most to your spinning wishes? Or some other spindle? Perhaps from wood reclaimed from pruning a tree, or from a branch that broke off during a storm? During Tour De Fleece I got my hands on a gorgeous blend of undyed wool, camel, alpaca and silk. I’m hoarding it for now, as I’ve still got another spinning project going and I need time to allow for a nice knitting project to percolate through my chaotic brain before starting on it. But from time to time I take it out and admire it. So soft and pretty… My SO caught me doing so once. I was fishing for some more fibre for my current spinning project. Poor, sweet man. He sighed, shook his head, smiled and softly retreated. He doesn’t get it but lets me enjoy my thing. 😊 I hope at some point we get to see what you will make out of this yarn!

I loved this, being a leftie it took me many decades of trial and error to teach and reteach myself some facsimile of knitting. Though I tension the yarn with my right hand and work the stitches with left needle, definitely produce an Eastern uncrossed knit fabric. Having to work out for myself making stitches (increase and decreases) lean specific way has resulted in rather interesting designs. It has taken almost 60 years to say I am knitting right and so are the other folks. It is a folk craft, so techniques will vary in an organic manner. When I tried to do it the "right way", it resulted in failure and tears!

I'm a crocheter not a knitter but I think I'm kinda in-between. I have a hard time finding projects I want to do and when I find them I will either crochet nonstop for a week to get it done or I will get 1/4 of the way and then it ends up in the wip basket never to be seen again bc I found something new I want to try

(Gasp) wow, just wow!! The blue texel looks great on you. I’m a big fan of wearing natural colours too. Nice job on the knitting and blocking. I hope you receive many compliments when wearing it.

I will now be educating my friends and family every time “Biscoff” cookies are mentioned 😂

Spread the gospel of speculoos! (Among the people and on your sandwiches but speculaaspaste/biscoffpaste is a thing)

This might get lost in the comments but could you please show a full combing "cycle" or how you comb? I was trying to understand it in your 100 day spindle challenge but it was too fast for me😅. And also, do you have the link to your combs? I think you mentioned they are 3d printed and my little craft hands are curious 😂

The Combs are from Instrumentum Textilae on Etsy!
