Leinster is strong but I really think what makes the difference between them and Toulouse is the Top 14. There is no hiding in the Top 14, all 14 clubs play with their knives out day in day out. In the URC, it is like the Premiership or Super Rugby, there is no relegation, therefore there are dead rubbers, there are games that you can afford to by pass and therefore, you are not set in a do or die environment and mentality. Not many people gives credit to not only the Top 14 but the lower divisions ProD2 and Fédérales but when you look at it, the reason why it is successful is because it respects the essence of sport and competition which is the best clubs stay alive, the weaker are relegated. It is rough for the supporters but it is also exciting and test their loyalty to the core. It is brutal, it is ruthless but it means there is no place for slacking in the French Divisions of Rugby. There is no place for the Newcastle Falcons, you cannot do that in France, you would not even last to Fédérales level because relegation is a water hole that does not work on aristocracy and it will have your club sink fast. So all these clubs they function on merit, hard work, results and grassroot. If you walk into a French club changing room, it is brutal, it is even feral at times. It is no child play, no spoiled brats allowed in there, you're going to be hurt until you are shaped into a team player and the club Culture and Identity. Now, Irish rugby takes great care of their grassroot and this 3rd Loss does not make Leinster a bad franchise, nor did it make Munster, Ulster or Connacht. Toulouse suffered loses and it is part of the process but I strongly believe the franchise system and this absence of true competition aka DANGER aka relegation creates a false sense of security. To win FINALS you have to feel ENDANGERED. You have to feel cornered, there has to be a certain amount of FEAR otherwise you will not learn how to conquer that fear. It is very much a matter of survival instinct. Where there is no danger, there is no instinct. Relegation to me is everything, sport without it is not sport and this is why I cannot watch Super Rugby or the URC or the Premiership anymore, I just cannot bother to see clubs giving away games, disrespecting the supporters because the RISK FACTOR has been taken out entirely and the players feel entitled. Let me remind you all salaries are higher in the Premiership than they are in the Top 14. The highest salaries in European Rugby are in England. So if you give players the most, you have to expect the most. Look at the Newcastle Falcons, how come they get to stay in the Premiership season after season with zero win and the likes of... Ealing or Coventry will never ever get to play in the top flight of English Rugby because... they are not part of this aristocratic club? It is unfair, it is unsportsmanlike, it is disrespectful, it is rigged in a way and it kills grassroot. As a player in these RFU clubs, why would you bother to make rugby union your life? You literally have all the drawbacks, the risk of permanent injuries, no money for your family, and no goal because the next level is not made accessible to you. Even when I was living in England, I have never heard about the RFU once. But anyway, it is not about English rugby, it is about that model that rejects the RISK and therefore does not always get the REWARD. I cannot understand how you can wish to grow the sport and tell 3/4 of your country folks, sorry but even if you win all the lower divisions, we will never allow you in. It is called inbreeding when you keep to a few and I think to some extent (lesser than English clubs) Leinster and Irish Provinces pay for it. In France, we have an old motto that says: "A vaincre sans péril, on triomphe sans gloire" to win without peril results only in unheroic triumph. Danger is not only the salt of sport, it is the salt of life. Anything without it is artificial. I really feel for the Leinster supporter but I can see a structural reason for this, granted Leinster has 4 stars on the jersey so, has something changed in this structure or is it that other Leagues have stepped up? The Top 14 for sure has never been as competitive. There were times in the past where the Agen, Toulouse, Colomiers, Toulon, Brive, Beziers and co were fighting it out fiercely but the sport has stepped up so massively since the professional era, there is not a club that you cannot fear in the Top 14. Take Perpignan and Bayonne, they are taking big scalps for a living or a surviving. And their fanbase is strong as ever. Not a Top 14 club would fear the Newcastle Falcons. They are a dead rubber and contempt to be so because the Premiership allows it. Who is this rewarding? Not the club owners, not the supporters and the players get paid regardless. They will never win a thing. Leinster has a bright future, I reckon Munster is getting a bit revival. It is good for the future of Irish Rugby but the risk factor... where is it?

You put it very succinctly. I think other nations will catch on but it'll be a matter of when, which may be a very long time.
In the mean time Top 14, ProD2, the third and even fourth division French leagues teams will be going from strength to strength. They have cracked the formula which admittedly wasn't that hard to crack really. All you need is competence.
Also I hate to be that guy, but it's "content" instead of "contempt"

For irish rugby, it's worrying. We produce players through our school system with unbelievable skills and talent. They then go straight into Leinster mostly. They don't face much adversity, always play in their comfy little bubble. In big games at World Cups or Heineken Cup finals, we don't seem to have the mental strength to win. It's happened a few times now, so it might not be a coincidence.

    • @richard-king-
      @richard-king- 6 месяцев назад +1

There was a lot there that looked like learnings from previous finals. The much maligned decisions to go to the corner vs kick the goals was a reflection of 2022 - Leinster took all the points that were offered in 2022, when they had gone to the corner in every game prior to that. In 2023, it looked like they wanted to get the clock into the red before attempting a DG (understandable given how 2022 ended), but this year both drop goal attempts were tactically sound. Leinster dominated because Toulouse were content to soak up pressure and win a turnover. How many times were Leinster turned over in Toulouse's 22 (or even around the 5m line).
Leinster lost the breakdown, got turned over a lot and looked disjointed in attack. You'd hope Bleyendaal can sort the attack out.
Sam Prendergast is the future of Leinster and probably Ireland. If they're not going to let him go to Connacht, they should get him meaningful minutes in what remains of the URC season.

It’s a really interesting post game review. I think the only part that is missing is about how Toulouse prepared for this competition compared to previous years. Ugo Mola has for the past few years integrated the U20 players into the pro squad for training. This season in Top 14, he has involved 55 players in the league games with great results as Toulouse is on top of the league, already qualified for the semifinals, with two games left. This allowed the international players to rotate and take way more rest than previous years. Toulouse never had such a refreshed team in the H Cup final until today.

Toulouse was much more realistic about it. But I will not forget that if that drop was successful at the end of the regular time, Leinster could have been champions yesterday. Doris, Josh VDF, Sheehan, Lamour JGP, James Lowe, Ciaran Frawley all had hardworking game with intent and our forwards worked hard. And sure Toulouse's defence at the breakdown killed their momentum and attacking chances to get go forward ball. Who is the Toulouse defence coach? Looking at that Label try which was worked from Toulouse's own half. was slick and fast attack and they switched it on in a second. They weren't letting that opportunity of Leinster being down a man pass them by in a final. The Northampton Saints game showed the lack of ideas in attack for Leinster. It was James Lowe and JGP who created those tries. Toulouse saw it and shut them down. The Leinster coaches could have looked at attack tactics from that game to improve for the final. Agree with @BonuxCouleur below the Top 14 sharpens French teams into that do-or-die instinct that perhaps the URC does not give the Leinster team. Also Leinster had 80% support in that stadium so the noise was on Leinster team's side. Toulouse had only 20% showing whether the support is there enmass or not does not affect their intent to fight it out to win the final and silverware.

Frawley and Prendergast have to be our 10’s, I was at the game, officials were poor, but that was expected! Our attack was blunt, really missed Ringrose and Jimmy O’Brien, dominated the scrum but maul was defended easily, kept persisting with going for the corner, decision making wasn’t great! Dupont was incredible as was Willis!!

People. Don't blame one man ( no 10 ) its the whole team that falls apart in big games . If you keep resting players every year before the big game and keep losing. Then its the management that needs to go.. the whole world knew sexton was going and they didn't bring in a experienced world class no 10 .. they just need a old head for a season 2 seasons while Sam got better.. 😢

Leinster choked again. Cut the nonsense, its the third Final in a row where the game was there to be won and they crumbled under pressure. Doris turning down 3 shots at Goal is unforgivable. However Toulouse were immense and deserved the win

leinster/ ireland lack those natural freak of south pacific so consistency is their key! if you can break that you break them! key positions of 10/9 are crucial to make that happen!

    Best Team
Won, by Hard Graft & Believe in their Rugby.
Leinster had enough Chances to Win the Game but their Over Arrogance & belief in Brute Force went Against Them.
Leinster won Previous Finals by having Outstanding Players in Key Positions who also played Rugby with Intelligence & didn't think they only had to Show Up to Collect the TROPHY.
Of course You are entitled to Disagree.

Please tell me what is it Andrew Porter brings to the plate to justify keeping him on for 86 minutes. Leinster have now lost their last 4 finals, that's 4 in 6 years. Something is horribly wrong. Cian Healy starts in a lot of other top teams and is treated like some useless waste of space with Leinster. They missed ringrose big time. Also missing lancaster so much too. Next year maybe 9: Gibson-Park, 10: Barrett, 12: Henshaw, 13: Ringrose

It seems too much to ask that commentators would actually make an effort to pronounce the name, of a player they are praising, correctly
It’s a very widespread name in France, and you don’t pronounce the ‘t’ in Dupont any more than you pronounce the ‘gh’ at the end of my first name.
