I got a 100% Wool jacket from banana republic probably 15 years ago. It was around $200 (I think I got it on sale?) Still in great condition! Completely worth the spend!
I'm currently trying to change over my wardrobe entirely to more natural fabric contents. Wool, silk, cotton, linen. It's been really challenging, especially on a budget, but I just think it's worth the effort. Being plus-sized ups the difficulty factor also. I've found excellent Irish wool sweaters for around $100, I'm hoping to keep them forever. Thanks for the information. I'm doubling down on my search for vintage wool pieces, most of them men's to get the sizing, but it's been wonderful to wear a 1950's Pendleton wool hounds tooth plaid bathrobe as a duster. It works.❤
I picked up a 100% wool Banana Republic waist length pea coat at Goodwill several years ago for $7 and I see long wool coats all the time there -- keep your eyes open for them...just get it dry cleaned😉.
I got a 100% double faced wool, camel long oversized coat from Sophie Rue (Nordstrom). Another coat from this brand was 80% wool and 20% silk. Retails for $368 and I got it for even less. It's beautiful, well-made, on trend (even classic) coat and reasonably priced even with not on sale. Like you, I value quality and material over brand name. I find any designer willing to put in higher quality material do not tend to go cheap on craftsmanship. That said, I cannot trust that designers won't change over time (go to cheap material/quality while keeping price the same) after they get a following.
I wish I knew all these fabric things before I purchased the cocoon coat from aritzia. Tbh I have no complains I’ve had it for 3 years and it’s still going strong. It’s not 100 percent wooo but I take care of it well by shaving the occasional pilling and steaming it every now and then. Things do last when you give them love. Your content is great ❤
@@mai567I use a Phillips pilling machine - got it off Amazon. I was nervous too, used it on jumpers I didn't care much for at first to see but it works really well - the blade is inside and only the pilling slips through to be shaved.
When it comes to coats I always buty London Fog. I paid $200 for a beautiful, black, classic trench in 2011 and it came with beautiful details, lining, and zip out wool liner for winter. It still looks like new and can't imagine having anything else.
Would not want to spend anywhere near $400 at a retailer like banana republic or COS, since you can easily find 100 percent wool coats secondhand for less than $200 or even less than $100 of you find a great deal. And older coats tend to be much heavier weight, so I think there's way too much value with respect to price and quality to buy a brand new wool coat.
Keep your wool coats on hangers, don’t bundle up in a dark place in the back of the closet for long periods of time. If possible, store wools and silk near cedar planks or lavender, things that months stay away from. You can store long term in sealed bag or bin with moth balls but these can be toxic for some people or pets. Best defence is to keep dusting and vacuuming and shaking and re-folding natural fibre clothing regularly. If you already notice moths: Can put a moth trap further from closet if you notice a little gold moth about 1cm long, that’s when I’d start spraying clothes and closet with vinegar and water to kill any larva or eggs once a week until traps aren’t catching them anymore.
100% cashmere is super soft super warm super light for that warmth, however cashmere folds pretty badly, collars etc. Look alot less refined. Also cashmere is way more fragile. Full cashmere coats can't expect to be daily worn and last a lifetime
Cashmere is short fibres and is very fragile. It would be my last pick for a coat. I love cashmere, but I'd want something much more robust for a coat. Merino would be better, but still wouldn't be a first choice. Again, it's more fragile than wool.
I love my 100% wool coat from Acne Studios. Bought it 2nd hand for 60% off retail (which is around 1k I think) and I can’t wait for the cold to come this winter
i got a 100% wool jacket from BR for $20 and wore it to death for 7 years. only reason it is now dead is because i was wearing it daily on the nyc subway and it became stained beyond repair
I am just getting starting upgrading my wardrobe. I bought a 75% Virgin wool, 5% cashmere, and 20% nylon black wool coat for 45 bucks on eBay before I found your channel. I feel like it was a great deal for my first purchase. Can you talk about what kind of blends are almost as good as pure natural fabrics? Why do you think 100% wool is better? I live in Texas if that makes a difference. Also could you do a video on a bare minimum wardrobe capsule for people starting out with upgrading wardrobe.
Thrift- virgin wool beautiful coats.. might have to change the buttons but the fabric now would be $50 per yard at least Even some high end brands are using blends now How about polyamide- isnt that just another name for nylon?
You can quite possibly find Romanian/other eastern European soviet-era wool coats for super cheap. On the other hand, they looks like Eastern Bloc wool coats
I really wanted a white (warm toned) ankle length wool coat with 1 row buttons, double breasted and oversized sleeves and every single one I saw was over 1k. I bought Luisa Spangoli for like 600euros, and that was only 80% wool and 20% polyester, I hate poly but I was forgiving because the coat was pretty close to what dreams were made of. If you want 100% wool for less, you can find it but if you're really specific like I was...lol its hard.
I just scored 2 wool coats at my local goodwill. One is 100% wool and the other 80% wool. One was $5 and some change and the other was $9.00. Both in almost excellent condition
I got my wool coats one black and white from H&M probably 15 years ago for about 75 bucks each. They're still beautiful to this day. They just don't make quality anything anymore
Ok so I know my Sam Endleman coat is only 95% wool but I got it for $50 off eBay brand new with tags and it was originally over $200. I adore it and it’s the most beautiful light orchid color.
Don’t know if they still make them but mine is from Cole Haan and I’ve had it for years looking pretty much new still. I also got a great larger leather wallet there. Great quality pieces, not just for shoes.
Thank you for these! Are you familiar with brands: Peruvian Exchange and Gaâla as well? They also have some great coats with a focus on organic materials/recycling.
Not too familiar but thrifted a really nice pair of wool pants from Peruvian exchange for my winter wardrobe/dark academia look. It’s a nice rare warm black and I love how the fabric is so much comfier than your average wool piece
Thanks Jenni! This is awesome! Can you help me with work dress👖? I'm looking for good, all season choices, that work for curvy . I'm only 5'3, so regular and cropped/ankle options would be great. Under $100?!
I am currently educating myself to be more conscious with the clothes that I buy. You mentioned that since it has been combined with polyamide, it can not be recycled so does that mean it is not sustainable and not something we should buy? For example I saw a coat with a wool and polyamide mix. Is that something I should not buy and just go with 100% wool?
Waste of time, shop from Marks and Spencer’s in the Uk, they do free shipping to US for orders over $125. I got my virgin wool cashmere blend coat for $230 last year and it’s amazing!
Guess what? There's an excellent wool/cashmere coat company in Melbourne Australia. With shipping internationally, its just over $300Australian dollars. Paddington Coats.
I got a coat today that was $400 but 60% off so $160. It is 65% wool, 34% polyester, 1% nylon. By the time I reached home it is already wrinkled a bit, is it worth the price ?
someone pls educate me, why 100% wool clothings are great in long term? i love the fact that they always keep me warm. However maintenance side worries me, must use wool specific detergent, and a lot of them require hand wash 😢 just not sure is it worth it
I got a 100% Wool jacket from banana republic probably 15 years ago. It was around $200 (I think I got it on sale?) Still in great condition! Completely worth the spend!
thank you! im waiting for black friday then!
well nevermind they dont ship to europe
How does it hold up in rain? I live in the UK so I'm always worried about buying coats that don't have waterproof outer layers
Yes! I have mine from five years ago, Went on sale and if I ever needed another one. I'll probably get it from banana republic again
What about theory?
I ordered %100 wool coat under $100. I went to Thread Up and it still has the tags. Thanks to watching your channel I’m choosing wisely!😊
60% wool is that bad?

thank u for doing God's work ma'am
Sezane is easily my favorite brand right now
I got a 100% wool coat from mercari for $50! perfect condition, with a silk lining
That’s so cheap! Was it on sale?

How do you shave the pilling? I'm afraid I'll cut it somewhere, and can't afford that because I can't find a good substitute for it.
@@mai567I use a Phillips pilling machine - got it off Amazon. I was nervous too, used it on jumpers I didn't care much for at first to see but it works really well - the blade is inside and only the pilling slips through to be shaved.
Fabric shavers from Amazon can work! I renewed a cashmere sweater with one
Have you done this for trench coats?! I’d love to see your opinions for different prices, you’ve ruined me now my expectations are too high😅
Agreed! I wish i had these insights when i was younger and building my “grown up” closet
Same really wish to check for trench coats
When it comes to coats I always buty London Fog. I paid $200 for a beautiful, black, classic trench in 2011 and it came with beautiful details, lining, and zip out wool liner for winter. It still looks like new and can't imagine having anything else.
Have you done a video on how to care for clothes before?? I feel like you’re the type of person who knows exactly how to wash whites
Rajiv Surendra (yes, the actor) has an amazing youtube channel that is an addictive breath of fresh air.... his video on washing whites is primo. ❤

My thoughts exactly
I'd love to see videos on Talbot's, Land's End, Chadwicks, etc....but those may not be within your preferred focus.
excellent research. And remember to protect your wool from bugs eating it
How do u prevent it though?
@@andy0995 seal them in plastic bags while storing and expose to sunlight to prevent/remove bugs
(I’m not an expert)
Put Moth balls in your closet
Keep your wool coats on hangers, don’t bundle up in a dark place in the back of the closet for long periods of time. If possible, store wools and silk near cedar planks or lavender, things that months stay away from. You can store long term in sealed bag or bin with moth balls but these can be toxic for some people or pets.

If you already notice moths: Can put a moth trap further from closet if you notice a little gold moth about 1cm long, that’s when I’d start spraying clothes and closet with vinegar and water to kill any larva or eggs once a week until traps aren’t catching them anymore.
Water and vinegar does not damage the clothes, and vaporizes smells after it dries, for anyone who’s curious.
The curated coats are great too!
Yes agreed! I purchased my camel classic coat 6 years ago. Only downside is that there’s no lining.
This is content I need. I know a bit about the fabric type but still never feel confident to buy something with that big money.
Thank you for these suggestions!
What are your thoughts on Everlane?
Exactly the content i needed 👌🏼
I’m obsessed with the aritzia slouch coat and it’s lasted me so well!
I’m torn between a 100% merino wool and a 100% cashmere coat. Can you do a pros and cons and differences, or tell me which might be the better option?
100% cashmere is super soft super warm super light for that warmth, however cashmere folds pretty badly, collars etc. Look alot less refined.
Also cashmere is way more fragile. Full cashmere coats can't expect to be daily worn and last a lifetime
W jakim sklepie znalazłaś Płaszcze 100% merino i 100% kaszmiru? :)
Cashmere is short fibres and is very fragile. It would be my last pick for a coat.
I love cashmere, but I'd want something much more robust for a coat.
Merino would be better, but still wouldn't be a first choice. Again, it's more fragile than wool.
Thank you queen. Picked up a coat from aritizia this season with your help.
