  • October 2, 2018 - Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses, Breeders) formed Belly in 1992. Their debut album, Star, went gold propelled by the hit single, Feed the Tree. The group disbanded in 1996, but they reunited in 2016 and released their new album, Dove, this year. Such an underrated band, they deserved much more success than they got. Sadly, the market was saturated at that time, but I'm glad I got the opportunity to discover their first album...yes, all I knew was Feed the Tree on MTV at the time /ashamed.

      @whyno713 You spoke only the incontrovertible truth a couple of years ago. Belly and Tanya and Gail and Tom and Chris have never received the minted recognition which they all truly deserve. This G damn music record label executive horse hockey down to the very bit the horse bites itself is right there, you know?
      I hereby swear and officially declare that Belly is one of the best bands - to this very day.

      Nothing to be ashamed of. I only got into them after seeing the video for Super-Connected, and didn't get around to buying their albums until the late 90's.
      Shameful is having a friend recommend listening to Sonic Youth back in the late 80's/ early 90's, and ignoring him because you didn't like the other music he recommended.
      It didn't help that a different group of friends went to see them live, and came back taking about the opening act. A virtually unknown three piece band, who had just released their second album. Yeah, it was Nirvana.
      Gave Sonic Youth another go a couple of years ago (in my mid 40's), and now listen to them almost every day.

      Gail has been known to be straight-edge so no drugs or alcohol, while Tanya has admitted that she and the rest of the band had their demons in the past in regards to substance and alcohol abuse.

    • @WHJeffB
      @WHJeffB Год назад +1

      @@deathbydiarrhea9146 I'd read that Gail was part of some no alcohol, no drugs movement (if that's what you'd call it), but I didn't know about Tonya and the guys being mixed up with any of that.
      Honestly... Tonya doesn't hit the notes like she did, but that's getting older for you as well as the fact that she wasn't all that consistent when she was in her prime (see some of the footage of them live). Gail is a fine musician and has a nice voice, but it's not Tonya. Listening to "Feed the Tree" sounded like a completely different band doing a cover of it.
      Great band in their day... Tonya is a very talented and an interesting person for sure (see her interview on "Women in Rock" here on RUclips).
      It'd be great to be able to wind back the clock to the Muses days, knowing full well what was coming next (Belly). Would have killed to be in the Newport RI/Providence music scene in the mid '80's.

    • @deathbydiarrhea9146
      @deathbydiarrhea9146 Год назад

      @@WHJeffB Yeah, I've seen the interview. Tanya definitely sings a key (or maybe more) lower, it does happen with aging singers, specially ones that didn't take care of their voice. Watching them years after their prime is more for the nostalgic feel now. Still appreciate the music they gave us though.

    The bass player still sucks. I saw them in 1995 or 1996 in a small club at college, and the band would have sounded amazing but the bass player sang off key all night, and acted a fool. I was in the front row and remember Tanya's tiny little Jellies shoes. It was a perfect moment in time. Tanya Donelly put out a classic album with Star. She deserved more recognition, but music was in a golden era and Belly was jostling for attention with some of the greatest bands in modern rock history. I always loved her voice and thought it made Belly stand out.
    Unfortunately her singing is stepped on this whole performance by Gail.....who seems to have learned nothing in 20 years. Ironically I always attached Gail with the decline of the band....she turned them from the band that created the wonderfully magnetic "Star" to the band that put out "King" which was missing something. They were never the same once she joined....its like she stepped on the magic that Tonya created like she steps on her vocals.....Tonya Donelly will always be one of my favorites.
