I have used toner from the cartridges that say thy are empty but there is still so much left in them. I had been looking for years for another use for it and it really works!
I live in South Africa where these products (embossing powder) are SO expensive when store purchased, THANK you SO MUCh for sharing this tutorial with so much lovely detail. I can't wait to try it out!!!!
Hello Tania :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) Welcome to my channel :) If there is anything you would like for me to show how to make, just leave a comment on what you are looking for and I will see what I can do :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Love the series, I am binge watching! I did this with my hubby last year. We happened to have access to a free spare spice grinder (used only for crafts now) and I used that to grind it at the end, worked wonderfully. I use the alcohol ink after, let it dry and put it back in the grinder. Oh the fun part for me was, well, I watched my husband do it, through doors, lol. I am very allergic to vinegar so I can’t even be in the same room until the smell is almost gone, but so wanted to try it. He’s pretty awesome.
I use the same Pledge floor polish instead of varnish for my decoupage and paper beads, etc. - works great and saves money. Got that tip from another crafter.
I love this buildyour own stash series. I was thinking this could be something my grand daughters and I could do over the summer and even have some great science ,math and cooking experiences. Very educational for adults to. It's also a very good way to try a new craft to see if it is something they would like. You have a way of teaching that I think everyone could follow. Thank you for taking your time to put everything together.🤗❤
Hello Ronda :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I think that would be wonderful to do the series with your grand daughters :) Crafting with children is one of my favorite things to do :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
I'm thrilled to find this series. Thanks so much for providing such helpful info! This is the first one I saw and I subscribed immediately. I love DIY!
This is amazing to watch and you are patient. I know I would mess it up, miss a step, etc... I'm better off buying embossing powder no more than I use it. My granddaughter might want to give this a try. Thank you.
Even though the ingredients starting with the floor acyrlic finish is not cheap this still comes out ahead if it's a realistic alternative or perhaps a new fun product you make yourself. Like your favorite less fine version that's got clumps of shiny textured bumps. Love it. Love DIY approaches to life which is how we all discover new things about ourselves too not just the media options around us. Anyway watching your process of breaking up the material to powder I probably would use my stainless or ceramic mortar and pestle and either dedicate it to crafting alone or watch for a cheap ceramic set and dedicate that. I recommend a larger bowl they do come in sets of different sized bowls but looking at this from start to finish and experience with grinding powders over the years I'd just find one of the medium to larger bowls around 4-5 inch round. The pestles also are easier to use in ones hands than the tiny smaller ones. But will have to give this a trial run. I do have other acrylic brand floor finishes a commercial product is my favorite that comes in a variety of levels of acrylic particles from 150, 180, 220 and even 250. I use 180 as a standard and retouch product but when I do the entire floors I have wood and vinyl and I've stripped down to the original finish then I like to use the 220 even 250 for a better base. I know you mentioned one product did not work but I bet these would. I also have a container of Bona and that too should work but maybe not as well. There are a variety of these products on the market. Years ago Safeway stores sold their own brand which was fantastic. To this day it was THE BEST. They ended up selling off to a competitor or quit making it not sure how that went but sadly in the late 70's or early 80's it was no longer available. And it did everything the OTHER name brand said they did but failed at. Life's interesting for sure. I'm going to set aside a day or two to play with this in a couple of weeks. I especially want to play with color additives. But if you want to repeat a similar show and tell video stamp your heart with color and then apply our powder so you can see them come to life a little better. But I agree I loved your bumpy slightly less fine version and can see all kinds of fun ways to apply the product in paper crafting and card making. Hugs for sharing this.
Hello! New fan here, I just ran across your video and I really wanted to do embossing, but I didn't have any powders! This is the best thing since sliced bread! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! ❤️✌️🖌️🎨🧫🧪⚗️🥽🔬Exactly what I needed!! Edit: popsicle sticks and a food dehydrator seems like would come in handy!! Also, a handworked pill grinder would work for the fine process. Not an automatic one, but a little plastic one that you twist back and forth to grind. Make sure to label (for embossing powders only)! I digress
Thank you for the sweet comment :) Welcome to my channel :) That is a good tip about the grinder, thank you for sharing that with us all :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
TFS!!! Love, love, love your channel! I just made this last night. To help speed the drying process, I made a sandwich: bottom layer: microfiber cloth; next layer: several paper towel layers; next layer: embossing powder; then another layer of several paper towels. All was weighted down by something heavy. Off to work I go. We'll see how dry it is when I get home this evening. I'm going to use my craft dedicated coffee grinder. I bought it at a thrift store. It grinds very, very fine. If that doesn't work, then I'll do the dryer sheet and sieve method.
Hello Mindy :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I am happy you are enjoying my channel :) You will have to let me know how your drying effort worked out, and please let me know how the grinder worked too :) I have had many people ask if it would work, and I do not have a grinder for the craft room so I couldn't give them an answer :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Hi Amy, My grinder works like a champ. I was able to get a very fine powder. As to my other efforts with the drying process.....I think it's much too humid here. It was taking far too long to dry, as in days! I'm a truck driver, and can be gone for days, and so when I got back and it still wasn't dry, I knew I had to find another way. I ended up spreading it on a crafts only cookie sheet and then putting it into my oven for a few minutes at the lowest temp. I just let the oven come to temp, 170 degrees, and then I turned it off. Then I put the powder in for maybe five minutes. I was amazed at the amount of liquid that came out of it. I used a paper towel to soak that up. It sure was dry then! I ground it right up. Haven't used it yet, but the plan is to put it to the test this weekend. Cross my fingers it works.😂. In the meantime I'm making the next batch of colored powders. I'm so, so excited to have found this option on your channel. Thank you. Have a lovely weekend. Mindy
Hello Mindy :) Thank you for letting us all know how this worked for you :) I will have to keep my eyes open for a grinder at the thrift stores :) Part of your drying problem may have been that with all of the layers and the heavy book on top there was not enough air getting to it to let it dry and let the water evaporate :) Putting it in the oven is something you would have to be careful of so that you don't melt it, but it sounds like you found a good recipe for doing it :) Good luck with your colors, and you will have to let us know how it worked for you when you try it :) Have an Outstanding Day :) amy
you continue to amaze me! I love the “chemistry “ part and experimentation like you do. Sometimes it’s just more fun to just watch. I have made my own stamp pads so far. TFS
Hello Tigger :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I am happy to hear that you made your own stamp pads, that is one thing I had to wait quite awhile to get when I first started crafting :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
I just discovered you yesterday and I am binge watching your videos. I can’t believe I found this video right when I am getting into embossing! its $24 for just a tiny clear jar here in Canada so I will make my own. Clear interests me most. I hope this is what it will be still watching midway. I cannot find Future anymore, but the hardware store should have what you used. I will use an old spice grinder to pulverize it. I hope this version is clear since the floor finish is clear.
@@aljohn Thank you! I made the extraction from an old Future bottle, but it is taking days to dry. Hopefully it worked otherwise I will try again with a new bottle of Pledge floor shine if I can find it. Looks sold out everywhere. If it works out, I will be thrilled.
Just FYI, I’ve seen this done with the Quick Shine floor finish and it works just fine *if* you use an electric appliance (small .pablender or coffee grinder) to grind it to powder. (Of course, if going this route, *buy a blender or grinder to use only for non-food related tasks.* )
Hello Brenda :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I got my first heat gun from a garage sale too, and I used it for a long time :) Garage sales are a great way to build your stash :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Hello Kftld :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I am so happy to hear you found the right product and that it worked great :) Enjoy you new embossing powder :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Thank you so much! I have been trying to find the new product name for a minute. They don't sell this much around here anymore. So I have to order online.
Hi, Amy. I watch all your diy videos but I keep coming back to this one for some reason. I can't tell you how many times I've watched it. Its a straight up scientific experiment! Just curious, of all your videos which one has the most views? I wish more people found your channel cause you are very inspiring. Thanks for all you do.
Hello Angela :) Thank you for your sweet comment :) Here is my most watched video ruclips.net/video/BzLEa2YV4VU/видео.html it is a stencil video :) I hope more people find my channel too, I do enjoy doing the videos and hearing the feedback on them :) If you get a chance to share the videos you like on your social media for others to watch that helps more people find my channel :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Another thing is that if your country or city drains out into a lake or the ocean then glitter paint water or embossing or acrylic water can harm marine life. I have heard that tiny pieces of plastic are hard to clean out of municipal water sources so keep in mind to get rid of the glitter or any micro plastic safely by straining it and then I just use a rag or paper towel to wipe it all up and throw the remainding in the trash I love the idea of putting it in kitty litter though
Thank you for your sweet comment :) I am not sure, I first tried a different one and it did not work, but I would say look for one that is a floor wax, not shine and it might work. tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
I glad that I have come across these episodes I'd homemade/diy's. Especially the embossing powder'. I've have saved the scientist one a few weeks ago to give it a try. I just got to get the pledge floor shine then I'm away. Thanks I've saved yours now too.
Hello Carole :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I am happy you found my channel too, welcome :) Have fun with your embossing powder :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
You're creating a weak acidic solvent to separate the polymers from the suspension solvent. Then when it dries it's just powdered polymers. And most polymers melt at low temp, that must be what embossing powder is really made from.
Hello Hercules :) Thank you for the comment :) Thank you for the science behind the embossing powder, i watched a scientist gentleman and have his site linked below, but couldn't explain the science behind the embossing powder :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Does anybody know the active ingredient that works to make the embossing powder? Pledge Floor Gloss is no longer being made and I'm wondering if other polymer products work the same way. I have on that evidently also has carnauba wax and am thinking it might not. Anybody know?
Patricia [aka Pooks] Burroughs i was looking for a similar product recently only because we opted not to do the whole waxing, polishing thing to the Armstrong floor in my sewing/craft room. Just to shine it up a bit. It still has the factory seal on it, so need to wait until I wear that off some. We didn’t want to get in the cycle of stripping, coating 3 times with this or that and renting expensive polishing equipment. My partener did same in his shop. Just clean and shines it up a bit. But I saw there are several things on the market, clear that could possible be a substitute. Most companies have specs of their products online. I think it may be mandated. I worked in grocery retail and there were sites to look up what was in all the cleaning agents, in case you had allergies etc.
Pretty cool, I did watch the video of the gentleman who you originally watched, to make this. My question is............ the gentleman didn't really know about embossing powder itself and didn't have the products to continue to make anything. So, he used glycerin........... I don't think you need to use glycerin? wouldn't regular embossing ink work too? Like versa mark or Tim Holtz embossing pad?
Hello Paula :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) By all means the regular embossing inks will work :) I just used the glycerin because we do not have any embossing ink in our Build your stash supplies, so I used what we had :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Thank you for making all theses videos it has helped me so much on a budget I just got through making my inks. And I can’t wait to make my paste and my own stencils I watch you all the time ❤️❤️❤️
Hello Debra :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I am so glad you are enjoying the series and saving some money too :) Stay Safe :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
It is a lot of work but I decided if I were going to make this then I was going to spend the time and make it all using the whole bottle of acrylic floor wax. I also used my dehydrator and fruit roll up trays to dry the acrylic (set it and forget it). It filled more than 15 embossing powder containers depending on what I added to it
Hello Grey :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I hope you enjoy the series :) You can start at the beginning and then you will have everything you need each week for the projects :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
@@aljohn Thank you for replying and for your kind words! Your series is the only one of it's kind I have seen on RUclips and it's hard to express my appreciation for it. I always find myself feeling frustrated, and frankly ashamed, because I can't afford to buy most of the stuff people use in craft videos. I have to try to diy the majority of my materials and tools, and while I know that there are literally hundreds of thousands of diy videos online, it's nice to see someone who actually gets that people have to start from somewhere and that especially these days and in these times, you might only have $5 to spend on craft supplies. Just the whole premise of this series and the way you acknowledge that people who don't have a lot of money and might not have access to craft stores, both here in the US and around the world still should be able to create is *awesome.* I already have like 1000% more respect for you than I do pretty much every other RUclipsr I follow. Thank you for what you do. You have earned a loyal and longtime subscriber. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Hello Grey :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) You should never feel ashamed that you cannot buy what others have, and besides that, you should feel proud that you figured out how to make something without all the fancy stuff :) As a child I crafted with whatever I could get my hands on, and my Mother and Father taught me that it is not what you have, but how you use it :) I am happy that this series could help, and remember that creating comes from the heart, not the craft store :) I am blessed to have so many people who enjoy my videos, and I appreciate each and every one :) I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
If this is something you are going to make much of in the future, maybe a investment in a inexpensive coffee grinder might be in order, or at the very least a mortar and pestle. 🤗
Hello Elizabeth :) Thank you for your sweet comment :) I have not tried either of those methods, but I think they may work :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
GEO sustainable..the gentleman from this channel (unsure of his name) showed this process. The fact he didn't have a heat gun, to test, really tickled me.😂
Hello Schuree :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) That is a really good idea, thank you for that :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Love your videos and ideas ... tfs. I have an extra marble mortar and pestle. I have ground some pretty solid things into almost dust with both of them. Wonder how this would work for this project? (I will try) Also for the smashing part ... how about a rubber mallet on a brick or cement block or floor. (like my garage floor I am thinking) ... lol
Hello Kat :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I think that a rubber mallet would work just fine to get it started :) I am not sure if the mortar and pestle will get it as fine as putting it through the dryer sheet, but it is worth a try, and if you are looking for a larger grit, it will work just fine I am sure :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Hello Wendy :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) This will work great in mixed media, that is what I am looking forward to using it in :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Wow! Have you seen the price of those "grunge" powders? No need to grate, just leave them really quite chunky. Thank you for this series, I really enjoy all your work. Where were you when I started "collecting" overpriced supplies 15 years ago? Off to watch the next video.
Hello Kathryn :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I try to stay out of the craft stores, so I haven't seen the grung powders yet, but this would work good in that area I think :) I am glad you are enjoying the series :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Hello Susan :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I don't emboss often, and it does take some practice, but the end result is very pretty :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Hello Debra :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) Here is a link for my current journaling on a budget starting video if you are interested ruclips.net/video/UZZRh-CsIuY/видео.html Stay Safe :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
I was just checking amazon for embossing powder then came back to you tube and found your video, what a great idea! As soon as I saw you were using Pledge Revive/Future Floor Finish, I paused video, and ran to my cupboard to see the what floor product I had and sadly it's Mop and Glo :( Thanks for the great video I'll be sure and check out your other one's. Kathy
Hello Debbie :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) The only long wait is waiting for it to dry out, but it was fun to do :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Process interesting and I’m cheap so would do the work. Maybe consistency of your glycerin is not working. I buy it myself as liquid to mix with vitamin E oil and water to make my own natural hair spray for curly hair! It is a humectant. Meaning glycerin doesn’t let dry days take moisture out of your hair so you have dry frizzes but it doesnt let humid days either make straight but curled hair go limp or curly hair straightens by blow drying curl up again. Wonder what element is added to the glycerin for stamping for embossing. I look all thinks up. Looking up what chalk a actually is is how to know how to make chalk paint. I’m thinking something wrong with the viscosity of your glycerin. Ive never done stamping for the cost but wouldnt mind painting on relief images for decoupage.
Hello Lyric :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I think I needed to add just a bit of water to the glycerin :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Hello Tas :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I do not have a mortar and pestle, so I have not tried it, but it might work :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
@@aljohn, have you also tried rolling over the bag with a rolling pin perhaps? I'd think there'd be less risk of breaking through the bag that way... at least to start it off until getting it a bit finer to then pass through the strainer... (or to then grind with mortar & pestle, coffee grinder, etc)... Oh, oh, oh!!!... I just thought of another idea just now!! :P I have a little pill grinder for pulverizing medication (for pills, tablets, etc... so they can be easily mixed into yoghurt, juice, or whatever... for those who have difficulties swallowing pills... or for pets, etc.) Anyways, they're pretty cheap & easy to find at most pharmacies... (or online of course)... and they work really well to pulverize pills...so I'd be willing to bet that getting a dedicated one to use just for this purpose would work fabulously... and would make the process much faster too! :)
@@aljohn ...and btw, I DO suggest using a spoon to rub against the strainer, rather than using your bare hands... for the same reason you were recommending wearing a mask... (which, btw, I *SHOULD* mention that the kind of mask you were using & recommending is really more for particulates... which would be useful while working with the powder -- as breathing in ANY powder should always be avoided!... but unless I'm mistaken, I believe those masks don't really serve much purpose for chemicals, gaseous vapours, etc.) ...so not only do I recommend using a spoon or gloves as you'd mentioned, and limiting physical contact where they can be absorbed into your system. But on a more practical note (less to do with safety), I'd also recommend getting a cheap silicone spatula from the dollar store or wherever... (I have a mini silicone spatula w. a stainless steel handle that was pretty cheap and is dedicated specifically for crafts)... ...think of it in the same way that a silicone mat works as a craft mat to repel paint and keep your work surface clean.... well, the spatula serves many purposes... you can scrape your cups pretty clean to avoid any waste at all... and when spreading the strained paste out on the paper towels it will spread out more quickly and evenly with the spatula... and of course the silicone will rinse/wash off very easily & cleanly... and also, when stirring the liquid in the coffee filter to help it along, it will not only make the process MUCH faster, since a spatula (like the kind you'd ice a cake with) will make much more surface contact with the filter than the wooden stick, so will let more of the liquid pass through the filter material... (since you're essentially breaking the surface tension, but manually & physically.... which is how I used to sift flour through a metal sieve with a soup spoon, before I got an actual sifter... lol... but same basic idea... the more surface contact you make, the faster the medium in question will pass through the filter/sieve)... and with a silicone spatula you wouldn't risk poking through the coffee filter. Really, for a couple of bucks, it's an indispensable tool in the craft room! (and is also a great blending tool with many mediums!) :)
I SO would’ve dropped the jello cup in the other cup! Lol. Thanks for sharing this with us! A lot of people have a coffee grinder they use ONLY for crafting. I bet that would work for grinding it up.
Hello Janet :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) It did take some searching to find out how to make this, and I am really happy with the way it works :) I really love next weeks product, I have used it for a long time, and is just different than anything else I have in my stash :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
You know for the batch that didn't work - you ended up with some COOL CRYSTALS for embellishments!! There are many videos on growing your own crystals - rather cool. But if these are that hard - that's great! Make a little bling jewelry piece - various colours! Funny - how there is rarely a mistake!
Nice video, next time don't press on it, that is why it is uneven, it can smear, and where you press it will be thicker. If you aren't absolutely perfect in your pressure and if you don't get every single spot with the same pressure, it won't look good. Just try it, and you will see it is much neater. It's standard to just dump tap and heat. No need to push on it. :)
Hello Jack :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) Thank you for sharing that tip with us all :) I have never been real good with embossing powder, but I do find it fun to play with :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
It's a very interesting and useful instruction. But could you please tell me if there is any substitute for the floor gloss? This is not available in India
Hello Chilka :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I am sorry to say that I do not know what you could substitute for the floor wax. tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Could you crush in a mortar/pestle? Can you sprinkle gold mica powder under the powder on top of glycerin stamping then heat or will mica burn? Just curious what others have tried that have made this.
Hello Glenda :) I have had lots of people ask if a mortar and pestle would work, but I do not have one so I cannot answer that question. If you try it please let me know it it worked good enough :) I have never tried mica powder with embossing powder but there are some out there that have some kind of glimmer in them, so it might work :) If you try that please let me know how it works, I would be really interested to know if it works ok :) I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
I'm loving watching this but we're at the poor the rough "rocks" into a baggie and it hit me that this looks like something you could get in trouble for. It looks like the rocks I see on the cop shows when people get caught with drugs, so be careful how you transport it. : ) My favorite tip from this video is how to get rid of paint water, I often have a stinky pot of paint water sitting until most of the water is soaked up by old paper towels. Then I put it in some kind of bag, like an old microwave popcorn bag and put it in the trash. I do also put it in the yard sometimes but I don't really like to. How brilliant to use kitty litter! I've recently started using the clumping litter and am amazed by how well it works. I haven't used littler since high school probably and it didn't work like this. I can't believe I didn't think of clumping my stinky paint water, Thank you for that tip. : )
Hello Lottie :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I got the tip on using kitty litter for waste water from a painter a long time ago, and I have used it ever since :) My oldest daughter was at our house visiting when I was doing all of my testing for this video, and there were all of the different stages sitting on my counter top when she got here, she said the same thing you did, lol :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Thank you for the sweet comment :) I do not think acrylic paint would work, but I do not know as I learned this process from the gentleman in the description box who is a scientist :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
The other one works (Quick Shine) but you need to Grind it in a grinder like a coffee or in a magic built type grinder. Give that a try it seems to work. Let me know ?
Hello Maria :) Thank you for sharing your tip with us all :) I do not have that one anymore, I used it up, but that is still a good tip :) Stay Safe :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Cool! But seriously, you're like a little Mad Scientist... scary fun to watch! ;) I wonder if there's a way to grind it after you made it so it covers more evenly?
Hello Roxy :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) The coverage problem is not with the powders, it is user error, lol :) I did not get an even stamp with my glycerin, so the powder didn't stick right, I will try to do a better job with my stamping when I show the blue embossing powder so you guys can see how it really works :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Im gonna try this for sure but in the summer heat..it will take it about an hour here especially if i put it in the locked up green house......i have thick paper mache goop dry that fast... Yeah its a death chamber and i fear for my dogs so i have a lit of safety things to make sure it remains open but inaccessible to them...several reduntant ones.
Hi there, you did a super job, I have all the stuff just have to make my emboss powder, to many projects lol I can not find the second video that tells you how to make the embossing powder, your video is great but wanted to see how the chemist mixed and did his mixer. I have seen it before but can not find it now grrrr dont you hate when that happens?? I tried this today, but used the cone coffee filters and the reg, the cone worked a lot better. I used alcohol inks to color my powders. the only thing I forgot is to reraise the mixer. made two colors, cross your fingers and toes I got it right...thanks again for your video and your hard work
Hello Holly :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I have my fingers crossed for you :) The second part from the chemist is on his web site, not YT, I believe his web site is in the description of his video :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
I saw the other gentleman's video. You can get almost every bit out if you keep washing it with vinegar. I am not sure if we have similar products here in the UK but embossing powder is so expensive it's worth my time looking. I think you have to get most of the milkiness out of it so you know you have all the acrylic. This is worth doing. Thanks for going over this again because it's better if you have seen more than one video as that tells you it works. Tell me though, I know how you use embossing powder but is there any instances where you would need this specifically rather than say, a home made gilding wax? I'm not being facetious it just occurred to me that they have similar applications?
Hello Foxie :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) The embossing powder is more raised and solid than a gilding wax, so it is just a different texture and look :) Stay Safe :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Hello Sabine :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) You can try it, but I am not sure how fine it will make the powder :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Adding mica when it gets to the powdered stage should make it sparkly ? I am going to try coloring it with metallic acrylic paint but I do not expect it to work because much of the mica they put in the paint may drain away . LOL!! White glue is a polymer. I wonder if this would work with glue ?
Hello Kielia :) Thank you for the comment :) I am not sure if adding the mica powder will change the properties of the powder or not, but it is worth a try once you get to the finishing stage. If you add paint, the paint will dry out so I do not think that would work while in the powder stage, but you can use it to paint over this after you have embossed it :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
@@aljohn, I just did this with the acrylic paint. You add the paint to the water and wax before you add the vinegar. Since the acrylic wax and acrylic paint are both the same types of polymers the vinegar separates them both and the color mixes with them both. Some of the mica in the metallic paints does wash away with the water, and dark complex paints like the copper changes color. I ended up adding brown and black alcohol ink and copper mica after the mess had mostly drained but still looked like wet cottage cheese. It brought it back from awful pink to a very nice copper. I would let you know what it looks like heated, but my heat gun is a big Black and Decker that burns the paper and fuses the polymers flat into the paper. I need to dig out my hair dryer.
Hello Kielia :) Thank you for the information, that is Great !! I had not thought about adding the paint to the water before continuing, I am going to have to try that the next time I make some :) Try to hold your heat gun farther away from the project and see if you can heat it without burning it, the hair dryer will not get hot enough to melt the plastic from what I have tried :) Thank you again for the info, that is so cool :) I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Hello Kathy :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) It depends on how much money you have :) I look at the time invested on my arts and crafts as me time, and I enjoy creating the products just as much as I enjoy creating the projects :) It is all about spending time doing what I love, which is creating, and making the powder is just as creative as using it :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Crucibelle Thanks for your take on it. I have been crafting for over 50 years and yes we all differ in our thoughts about time, process, productivity and money.
Love the video and info. Suggestion - How about using a dedicated craft coffee grinder to process the powder? Keep your series going. I’m learning a lot!
Hello Grace :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I like how you put dedicated grinder in your question, we all need to remember not to cross over things from the kitchen to the craft room and back again :) I do not think a coffee grinder will get as fine a powder as putting it through the dryer sheets, they make it very fine, but you may get a heaver grit which could look cool too :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
This is awseome Amy and thank you for the information on the smells. On the one that didn't work as planned did it mantain its color with the alcohol inks? Thank you Amy for sharing your experience you have helped me buikd a pretty neat art stash. Many blessings!
Hello G :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) The blue one did retain its color, and I will be doing a video to finish it off and show how it looks :) If you are asking about the one I added the alcohol ink to after I turned it to a powder, I hate to say I haven't done anything to that one yet. tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Hello Nicole :) Thank you for your funny comment :) I haven't seen that show, but I know what it is about :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Hello Sherry :) You could try a small processor if you have one set aside for crafts, I would NOT use the one you use for food:) This comes out too hard to use a flour sieve, it would bend the mesh up pretty bad :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Hello Meridel :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) This is not my invention, but I agree it is awesome :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
I have a question regarding the glycerin for anyone who happens to come across and read this comment even though I realize this video is 4 years old...I also came across and watched a video on this exact process to make embossing power, it was created by a man who I was not be surprised at all if he were a scientist..i have everything needed Except for liquid glycerin. I have never looked for it anywhere, so perhaps it is located in the grocery store or some other easily accessible store. What I do have, though, is Glycerin's suppositories that, apparently, my very constipated brother who used to live with me left in his medicine cabinet. I don't know much about suppositories, but I suspect there's really nothing else in them aside from the glycerin. I was wondering if melting a little piece of a suppository would work as a substitute for the liquid glycerin you and the other video i watched both used? anybody know? I couldn't even see how much he used. It seemed like he just put a little tiny smudge on a piece of paper. Yours was much easier to follow. He did not use it to create a stamp pad like you did. It seemed like he placed it on the piece of paper he was about to place the extracted acrylic on before he returned it to a heat source.
Thank you for your comment :) I am not sure about the suppositories, but you get the glycerin at Walmart in the pharmacy and the cake decorating section :) You can get the clear Versamark stamp pads too :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
@aljohn I suspect that this will surprise you because it sure surprised me! Last night, I went to Walgreens and then CVS as a Google that both locations had liquid glycerin in stock. After looking up and down the isles the glycerin should have been, I asked one of the employees for help. She was very new, so after a quick look, she asked one of her co-workers if she could help us. Here's the crazy part:: The lady who ended up being able to help told me that as far as she knows all Walgreens, at least all stores here, in California no longer carry bottles of liquid glycerin because people have been building bombs out of it!!!??? CVS did not have any liquid glycerin either. They just had glycerin suppositories. The CVS employee I spoke with is not aware of any items the store recently wants pulled from the shelves. So I don't know about glycerin and bomb making, but at least for now, don't try to get liquid glycerin from Walgreens in ca. After looking it up, it appeared that the glycerin in suppositories is from vegetable oils, same as the type of glycerin I was looking to buy, so I bought a box of liquid glycerin suppositories. When I got home I tried to make the embossing power. I failed..not sure if it didn't work because of the glycerin or if something else was wrong.... Perhaps I did not rise the vinegar and whatever other chemicals are in the " mop and glo" out good enough when I was extracting the acrylic? Everything seemed to be going as it was in your video as well as the science guys videos until I added a little glycerin to the paper I was going to be putting the ground up acrylic. When I added my heat gun, I was getting smoke from the acrylic. I stopped and went outside to continue this step. It continued to smoke a plastic smell and I ended up with a sticky amber colored glob of acrylic.. so I just don't know what went wrong. I want to try to make it one more time as it would sure save me a lot of money and allow me a lot more color options if I could make it myself.. 🤔
I was really excited by the idea that I could make my own powder for both affordability and creating color variations. I got to the crushed and sieving part and figured there was too much moisture in the air to really dry it. I ended up with large grains that wanted to clump together, even after spending days with a silicone pack to help dry it out. Does anyone have solutions for this problem?
I have not had that problem, and I haven't had anyone else say they did either. I can only think that you can leave it longer and see if it dries. You do have to put it through the mesh when it is dry to make the small grains :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Hello Deanna :) You can try that, I am not sure if it will get fine enough or not, but it doesn't hurt to try if you have one set aside for crafting, do not use the one you use for food, because this will contaminate the container, tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Hello Wendy :) No one has suggested that yet, and I think it is a great idea :) I think the glitter would stick fine so long as you dont add too much :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Hello Catherine :) I do not have one, but you could give it a try :) If it doesn't get fine enough, then put it through the dryer sheet :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Hello Barbara :) I don't know if that would work or not. You would need to have the right ingredients in the medium to make it work. I do not know the science of this, I found this recipe on line, and the scientist's web site is listed below :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
I have used toner from the cartridges that say thy are empty but there is still so much left in them. I had been looking for years for another use for it and it really works!
Thank you for your sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
That’s a great idea!
Me too!
Hello Tracy :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) Yes, your hubby sounds really awesome :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
I use the same Pledge floor polish instead of varnish for my decoupage and paper beads, etc. - works great and saves money. Got that tip from another crafter.
Great tip, thank you for sharing that with us all :) Thank you for your sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Your heavy looks like the ultra thick embossing powder. It usually takes several applications of powder to get a smooth finish.
This is the best video on the subject of creating your own embossing powder -- very geared to crafters and how to get it done correctly.
Thank you for the sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
I'm thrilled to find this series. Thanks so much for providing such helpful info! This is the first one I saw and I subscribed immediately. I love DIY!
Hello Patricia :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) Thank you for subscribing :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
This is amazing to watch and you are patient. I know I would mess it up, miss a step, etc... I'm better off buying embossing powder no more than I use it. My granddaughter might want to give this a try.
Thank you.
Thank you for your sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
I found using a ball Mason jar w/ just ring to hold coffee filter while draining stages is so much easier than elastic.
Hi Amy,
My grinder works like a champ.
Thank you for the sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Hello Iris :) Thank you for sharing your tips :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
I'm so happy to see this. I will be trying to make some. I bought a heat gun from a garage sale and it works great.
Hello Brenda :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I got my first heat gun from a garage sale too, and I used it for a long time :) Garage sales are a great way to build your stash :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
HI again, I found the renamed floor polish - it is now called Pledge Floor Gloss Original, 27 ounces, worked great!
@@Hisuihana Can't seem to find it northern Virginia either. Guess I'll be ordering it online too. Now how do we make sticky embossing powder??
I missed this when it aired originally, this was quite interesting. Thank you for sharing your creativity and time.

Great tip about using cat litter to dispose of liquids safely!
Hello Clare :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Thank you for the sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
You really have a knack for teaching! Wonderful!

Hello Hambeast :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) Score :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Hi Amy, thank you so much for sharing how to make this, very awesome of you to show us how, huge love and hugs xxxxx
Hello Claire :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
I'm a bit late to this party but I love this idea! However I can't find the Pledge Revive it Floor Gloss now. I wonder what alternative I should try?
Thank you for your sweet comment :) I am not sure, I first tried a different one and it did not work, but I would say look for one that is a floor wax, not shine and it might work. tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
This is so cool! Thank you. I wonder if pigment ink would be a stronger colour.
Thank you for sharing your process
@@patriciaburroughs I should think the acrylic medium would work?
Carol Gibbons hi,
How did your experiment go with the white & clear glues?
That is incredible.
Hello Star :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Would definitely try finding a second hand coffee grinder for this...nice job
Hello Rome :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Yeah or a second hand want type blender would be good if you use a lot of this.
Thank you for making all theses videos it has helped me so much on a budget I just got through making my inks. And I can’t wait to make my paste and my own stencils I watch you all the time ❤️❤️❤️

Really interesting to watch the process if you have the time and patience! For me it's just too much work... but I commend you for it👍
Hello Janice :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy

Just the whole premise of this series and the way you acknowledge that people who don't have a lot of money and might not have access to craft stores, both here in the US and around the world still should be able to create is *awesome.*
I already have like 1000% more respect for you than I do pretty much every other RUclipsr I follow.
Thank you for what you do. You have earned a loyal and longtime subscriber.

Hello Elizabeth :) Thank you for your sweet comment :) I have not tried either of those methods, but I think they may work :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
you can also just bake it on the coffee filter as well
GEO sustainable..the gentleman from this channel (unsure of his name) showed this process. The fact he didn't have a heat gun, to test, really tickled me.😂

I was going to suggest a mortal and pestle too - I guess you just have to try and see how hard it is.
I am excited to try this! I have had chunky embossing powder on my wish list for mixed media! This looks like it will be perfect!

A mortar and pestle does work. A dedicated coffee grinder is easier on the hands. I have tried both.
Exactly what I was going to suggest! Great minds think alike... haha ;)
I have a little pill grinder for pulverizing medication (for pills, tablets, etc... so they can be easily mixed into yoghurt, juice, or whatever... for those who have difficulties swallowing pills... or for pets, etc.) Anyways, they're pretty cheap & easy to find at most pharmacies...
(which, btw, I *SHOULD* mention that the kind of mask you were using & recommending is really more for particulates... which would be useful while working with the powder -- as breathing in ANY powder should always be avoided!... but unless I'm mistaken, I believe those masks don't really serve much purpose for chemicals, gaseous vapours, etc.)
...so not only do I recommend using a spoon or gloves as you'd mentioned, and limiting physical contact where they can be absorbed into your system.
Hello Erin :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
wow this is fantastic - who knew we could do this - and i cannot wait to see next weeks - look interesting TFS Amy!!
Hello Seeta :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) Yes, happy mistakes :) That is a good idea :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Seems like if it is just the acrylic then maybe just water based polymer varnish type from the hardware would work.
Thank you for your sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Really love your videos!! Thank you for sharing all your fantastic knowledge . 🤗
Hello Lorraine:) Thank you for the sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
al john 😊
SooOOooOoo SUPER FANTASTIC! I want to do this ASAP. TSMFS...greatly appreciated
Hello Kisha :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) Have fun with this :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
My favorite tip from this video is how to get rid of paint water, I often have a stinky pot of paint water sitting until most of the water is soaked up by old paper towels.
I could just see a cop arresting you for coke and taking his/her finger and tasting it to see the grade...like the movies :)))))!
I wonder if you could just start this with acrylic paint?
Thank you for your sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Hi there, you did a super job, I have all the stuff just have to make my emboss powder, to many projects lol
I can not find the second video that tells you how to make the embossing powder, your video is great but wanted to see how the chemist mixed and did his mixer.
Thank you for sharing. This is amazing I can’t wait to try it.Blessings. 👍❤️
Hello Joanne :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Thank you million times. Do you thank i can use a mortar to make the fine embossing pouder?
Ofcourse i signed in. Greets from Holland, Sabine 🍀
Hello Sabine :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) You can try it, but I am not sure how fine it will make the powder :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
You're a gem! Thanks for sharing
Hello Julia :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Great video, Amy- I'd like to see you use the different stages of the embossing powder in Some project(s).
Hello Marie :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) I will try to use some in a future video :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
@@aljohn, your welcome. Thank you ! If not for you I could not afford embossing powders.
You're too funny! I enjoy your videos 😃
Hello Art :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
This was an interesting technique but I have to ask myself whether the money saved is worth the time investment?
Hello Kathy :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) It depends on how much money you have :) I look at the time invested on my arts and crafts as me time, and I enjoy creating the products just as much as I enjoy creating the projects :) It is all about spending time doing what I love, which is creating, and making the powder is just as creative as using it :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Crucibelle Thanks for your take on it. I have been crafting for over 50 years and yes we all differ in our thoughts about time, process, productivity and money.
Crafting is art... and art is science...and science is exactly how these products came into existence. Fantastic video and great explanations.
Designate a spatula for scraping off filter, may loose less.
Hello Bell :) Thank you suggestion, that is a good idea :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Thank you so much
Love the video and info.
❤❤❤
You are fantastic! Thank you. Great video.
Hello Lori :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Reminds me of breaking bad lol 😂
Hello Nicole :) Thank you for your funny comment :) I haven't seen that show, but I know what it is about :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
😂
a rolling pin would work well to break it down
Could you use a a small processor to grind it? Or a flour sieve?
Hello Sherry :) You could try a small processor if you have one set aside for crafts, I would NOT use the one you use for food:) This comes out too hard to use a flour sieve, it would bend the mesh up pretty bad :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
You could make geode crystals with the pledge that didn't work! :)
Hello Tania :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) That is a good idea :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Thank you for sharing
Hello Lilette :) Thank you for your sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
This is just awesome
Hello Meridel :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) This is not my invention, but I agree it is awesome :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Can you used used bounce sheets?
Hello Roweinna :) Yes, you can use any used dryer sheet for this :) Stay Safe :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
I have a question regarding the glycerin for anyone who happens to come across and read this comment even though I realize this video is 4 years old...I also came across and watched a video on this exact process to make embossing power, it was created by a man who I was not be surprised at all if he were a scientist..i have everything needed
Except for liquid glycerin.
Here's the crazy part::
The lady who ended up being able to help told me that as far as she knows all Walgreens, at least all stores here, in California no longer carry bottles of liquid glycerin because people have been building bombs out of it!!!??? CVS did not have any liquid glycerin either. They just had glycerin suppositories. The CVS employee I spoke with is not aware of any items the store recently wants pulled from the shelves. So I don't know about glycerin and bomb making, but at least for now, don't try to get liquid glycerin from Walgreens in ca.
After looking it up, it appeared that the glycerin in suppositories is from vegetable oils, same as the type of glycerin I was looking to buy, so
I bought a box of liquid glycerin suppositories. When I got home I tried to make the embossing power. I failed..not sure if it didn't work because of the glycerin or if
something else was wrong....
Awesome!!
Hello Tina :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
I wonder if the purple ink actually REACTED with the vinegar, and that's why the color changed.
Great video, thanks for sharing.
Hello Donia :) Thank you for the sweet comment :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Yes. You can put the damp mixture into the oven at 375 degrees on parchment paper - not waxed paper for 10 minute or so.
Putting it in a pill crusher would pulverize it!
could you use a spice or coffee grinder instead of the sifter?
Hello Deanna :) You can try that, I am not sure if it will get fine enough or not, but it doesn't hurt to try if you have one set aside for crafting, do not use the one you use for food, because this will contaminate the container, tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Amy I apologize if this has already been addressed but do you think we could add fine glitter to it?
Hello Wendy :) No one has suggested that yet, and I think it is a great idea :) I think the glitter would stick fine so long as you dont add too much :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
Could you use a Pestle & Mortar to grind it to a fine powder
Hello Catherine :) I do not have one, but you could give it a try :) If it doesn't get fine enough, then put it through the dryer sheet :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
wouldn't acrylic medium work better than Floor finish?
Hello Barbara :) I don't know if that would work or not. You would need to have the right ingredients in the medium to make it work. I do not know the science of this, I found this recipe on line, and the scientist's web site is listed below :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
