  • Optoma raises the bar again with its latest gaming offering, the UHD 35 & 38. These replace the previous model UHD 30. We test the UHD 35 against the last gen UHD 42 to see how it compares in video and gaming performance.
    The biggest advantage the new models offer is an astounding 4.ms of input lag when running in the 1080p 240Hz mode, much faster than the previous models (still very fast) 16.7ms.
    Could these new models be the new best gaming projectors for 2021? Watch the video to see how they compare.
    Check out the Optoma range on our website:

    Wow projectors have come a long way in just 3 years. I bought a Optama UHD 50 for $1400 after tax. 2,200 lumens, 60hz, and lag is around the 20ms I believe. Can’t wait to upgrade but most likely wait for the price to drop more.

    I like how they take time to inform people on the context of some specs and the diminishing returns that may or may not be present. Like the "unless you're an E-sports professional, it shouldn't make a difference," comment.

    Hi ,great review ,just purchased the Optoma uhd 38 from you earlier in the week 😁 ,must say your service is excellent and the choice of payment options was really good ,we upgraded from the Benq w1070 ,it just dose'nt seem to pop as much as i thought it would only used for 4k dvds and streaming ,we have a very bright room but usually don't watch until dark, maybe i need to look at the setting running a panasonic 820 , 4k firestick through a Denon 2600 ,great review bought the 38 based on this review ,liked and subscribed great content on the channel 😉

    Great review. Did just miss a key point I think, at least I did not hear it, that when in GAMING mode, the HV keystone and other geometry adjustments are turned off, so you need to mount the thing square on. It is a bit disappointing but also understandable - the picture manipulation will introduce lag. These functions will also eat into the resolution so while it's a pain, mounting straight on (as I plan to) and doing without, will give me better IQ and access to the fast gaming modes.

    • @ScanComputers
      @ScanComputers  3 года назад +1

      We did reference the keystone but not with regards to the Gaming mode. You are correct though, in the gaming mode they will not work so its essential to have it mounted square.

      @@ScanComputers yes you referenced the keystone but missed the key point. It's pretty significant for gamers who would want to know that they cannot use any geometric adjustments with gaming mode enabled is all.

    Been waiting for this! I have tge UHD 42 and was wondering if it was worth getting the new model. For me I'm going to stick with the 42 for now but if I was buying one new then I would go for the uhd 38 as I dont need the setup stuff and the extra brightness and 2x hdmi 2.0 ports would be worth it. Great and fair review Scan! These videos should get more views for sure!

      Then try play a 4K picture in Enhanced Gaming Mode. You will see that the UHD30 and UHD42 cannot play back the picture in 4K but reduce it to 1080p. This is a problem with the Texas instruments chip from last year and is not mentioned by Optoma.
      Believe me, I had many conversations with Optoma until they finally recognised and confirmed the problem.

Because the projector projects bottom up and when ceiling mounted that means top down, if you drop the project 60cm or so the height up the wall is not so bad (though have yet to set it up, so this is in theory). Still not good enough for me to bother. I want 4K, not 1080p.
    I don't need 240hz. I want 120Hz at 4K at 10ms or less and then I am happy.
    It needs to be native 4K, HDR with VRR and aforementioned 120Hz at 10ms or less input lag.
    Also bright enough and wide enough color gamut and black level.
    Is it asking a lot? Perhaps but this needs to beat TVs that can do all of that with a stronger picture. So just larger size isn't enough. Furthermore at those very large screen sizes even native 4K is hitting a wall.

      This will depend on a number of factors. If the screen is in direct sunlight then you will have a washed out image. If its in a darker area that isnt in direct sunlight and your image size is less than 120 inches then it will likely be quite watchable.

    Are they better than the 50x aside from the contrast ratio?

    • @ScanComputers
      @ScanComputers  3 года назад

      Yes they are better in some ways but not all. The UHD 50X is the same model as the UHD 42 (US and UK markets have different model numbers but are the same.) so what we said stands for that. Essentially much faster menus without the long wait, Gaming mode now works in 4K without reducing resolution and overall input lag times are down. However 35 and 38 lack the 1.3x zoom and vertical adjustment that the 50X has. they also have a longer throw.

      @@ScanComputers I didn’t know that the 50x reduced the resolution??

    • @ScanComputers
      @ScanComputers  3 года назад

      @@GAPOWERade its well documented online, but you can see that the resolution is lower when you turn on gaming mode in 4K. Unless it was fixed in a firmware update for that model. If its not then you are better to leave gaming mode off when in 4k mode. Input lag is about 25ms without so its still very good for general gaming.

The attached photo is of the projector projecting onto my white closet doors. I still have not messed with the settings but I can't wait for our first family movie night on a larger scale. If you have issues with volume not working with your firestick, go into volume settings and you will find your solution there.

    Between these Optoma UHD 35 or 38 and the BenQ W1720 or BenQ TK800M / TK810 which would you recommend for better black levels, colors and movie viewing? I will be using it in a living room (non-dedicated viewing space) on a white wall and there is a bit of ambient light but blackout curtains to cut the light. Will be using it mostly for movies/series and some gaming on a Nintendo Switch, mostly at night.
    I was almost going for the BenQ but having owned an Optoma (HD20) in the past and literally never having a problem with it, I'm still looking at options from Optoma
    Is there any other projector you recommend in the below 1300 Euros category? (classic/long throw only)

    • @ScanComputers
      @ScanComputers  3 года назад +1

      Hi, We havent tested the BENQ models ourselves so cant offer a comparison. However it sounds like the OPTOMA is the right model for you based on what you have said. The high brightness will really help in your room to get the colours across. Usually in rooms with moderate light control and lighter walls/ white ceilings it is the blacks that suffer the most due to light refracting around the room so you are better off with more brightness than better blacks. It may also be worth considering making the wall grey rather than white to help with this.

    • @ScanComputers

      Its definitely something we would love to see in future for sure. The current Texas Instruments chip isnt capable so it could be a few generations before we see it. However turning on V-Sync or Fast sync (Nvidia) does fix the issue and when you are at 240Hz the increased lag from those options is imperceptible. So there are options toi get a great experience.

    ;-) Gaming projector with projection ratio 1.5~1.66, what a useless projector. That is most important factor and it´s the worst factor ever. You have to project from one room to another to get big picture. I have W1080T with 0.7, having 5m screen from 3m - that´s projector. I have always fun seeing showing projectors on 2m screens - what a waste of money. That´s world of TVs, not projectors! Most poeple live in small flats, wake up, Optoma, wake up!

    • @JaxDagger
      @JaxDagger 3 года назад +1

      What are you talking about? it is fine for around 15 feet and if you don't have 15 feet and live in a small flat maybe don't buy a 4K projector because even a 65 inch TV from such a close distance would satisfy the urge for a big screen, really don't think they need to wake up with how well this has sold and how well its been reviewed online so far.

      @@JaxDagger I dont know how your feet is long ( fun :-), but 3m diagonal from 4,5 m sitting is not much cinema. The sence od cinema and big screen is to fullfill your field of view, then you need big resolution. Have you ever had picture from top to button of your wall? Please, try it. If you ever try 3D the size is important. Sitting 4,5m you shoud have 4.5m screen, than you see the 1080p is not enough and 1440p would be better. 4K why not, but having this projector makes screen smaller because 1:1.5, not 1:1.2, not fair 1:1, and where is great short throw 1:0.8. So the optic saying only for people with big house. But to these with smaller rooms that can effort this projektor, for them is useless. And having cinema you should always try to have big distance, It is good for eyes, means not sit closer.

      This is a good observation, If it would be with a 1.3x zoom I'd buy it immediately, in my room I have only 2,5m (8,2 feet) distance from the screen, so I would have an image with only 72 inch. I 'm going to buy the Benq TH685i with 1.3x zoom, so I can get an image with 100 inch, unfortunately it isn't 4k but only FHD.
