The fact that the last World Cup was in Russia and the upcoming one is in Qatar tells you all you need to know about FIFA and the state of football today.
To be fair, the FIFA that allowed hosting rights to Russia and Qatar were a different team headed by Blatter, obviously corruption took place. I would hope that FIFA now, under Infantino, isn't so bad as the last team and that the hosting rights are more thought through rather than who has the most money, we'll soon see.

I find it incredible how no one in the media has brought the point up that Neville was the spokesperson for the football world against the super league , arguing how wrong and corrupt it was…now he’s the poster boy for the world cup in Qatar
Have grown a lot of respect for Gary in recent years, but supporting this World Cup for a personal payday has shattered a lot of it unfortunately and taints a lot of his other positive messages
Don‘t forget he will still speak out for all the issues in Qatar! However, he completely forgets that he legitimizes this whole disgrace of a tournament.
Not enough scrutiny I'm afraid. Same goes for your interview with Becks. Glossing over some horrific human rights violations. Maqwell has done a brilliant video on the Qatar World Cup that is worth a watch
Human rights violation? Western countries are the biggest culprits of this. Do your research. Educate yourself before talking nonsense. If I come to your house and you tell me I have to take my shoes off, I can either respect your right to request that or be rude and wear them anyway.
Savagely bad interview with Becks, I was ashamed to see him promoting the WC in Qatar so gloriously, despite all the loss of life to innocent people. And now, Gary Neville 😩
that doesn't really mean much when you in other videos promoted officially declared apartheid state isreaI who according to human rights watch and Amnesty international are 💯 an apartheid state who are in all football comps worldwide. so clearly you couldn't careless about human rights. What irks you is a Muslim nation holding a big tournament. you've been exposed
Honestly. Never been so disappointed in Gary Neville. For all his activism and “supporting” of the little guy he’s just wholeheartedly selling out by how clearly he’s allowing his questions to be pre-determined.
I love how Gary says hes not a hypocrite for taking the qatar bein sports bag and at the same time " championing peoples rights " these celebrities must think we were all born yesterday, you cant have it both ways in life
I know right. I was beginning to like him because he was speaking out about the way our country is being run by these absolute sociopaths. Now, he may well be against the way Qatar treats fellow human beings but never once mentioned it to David Beckham when they did the overlap. David took millions from FIFA to become their ambassador for this world cup. DISGRACEFUL.
Payday or not, an attempt to shine an impartial light on a Middle Eastern global event is one I would applaud. The middle East isn't perfect it's just different, a different form of diversity that I hope we are one step closer to accepting globally.
Didn't expect this sort of content and I would've hoped you'd questioned not just the people working in Qatar, but the FA delegation too. Only a quarter of the way through and there's huge holes in what's been said regarding accommodation. Firstly, they're aren't cheap options going around (that was said by the FA people) and Qatar have encouraged people to give up a room to allow fans to visit but by doing so and the demand being large, they're extortionate too. There's a good TIFO Football video based on accommodation if people want a more realistic view on what's actually happening with that. Edit 1: Further on when talking about the worker's welfare and wages, Gary does raise his concerns and talking about the disparity in pay between workers and the people running everything there was a good thing to put in. I thought it was looking like a fluff piece with you talking about issues in minor detail but I was wrong about that. Only getting Qatar representatives feels a bit lob-sided in who's perspective you're getting though.
It is a fluff piece. He'd have been better not putting anything out. He's hardly going to say anything negative when he's signed a deal with beIN. He's a man of the people, but only when it suits him.
People in the west need to stop complaining and put down their superiority complex. What you all fail to understand is that only through events like the World Cup or the Olympics where the west pays attention, do these people get a chance to progress and pressure those who rule to open up. The best method of change is integration with those who we aspire to chance for the better. I hope more events happen in places across the world similar to Qatar so the scrutiny and natural integration pushes human rights to the forefront of people’s thoughts.

I was in Qatar for a night in June (missed connecting) and July (connecting, so only airport). I stress I was there for a night and early morning. The place is nowhere near ready. It is an out of worldly place driving from airport to downtown/ business sector. Beautiful building galore. But it is just not ready. So much construction was being done.

Having read some of the comments I wonder if people really watched the video? Neville highlights both good and bad about where the World Cup will be played. He also spoke openly about some of the "issues" around the staging of it. A lot of the questions were around having a drink and taking your top off etc, a western way of life... but as the little guy he spoke to in the stadium commented, people are travelling to another country. Which does have different values - and not all negative values - but every country is the same. All countries have their own unique set of values. If you chose to enter a country you choose to live by their rules... for a week or so of your life. If you don't accept the rules then don't go. Simple. With regards to Neville himself signing a lucrative contract to broadcast their - what is the real issue? Is he suddenly making a quadrillion times more money than anyone else that is out there? Probably won't be the best paid of the broadcasters there yet he is being strung up for being there, regardless of his paymaster. He has clearly aired his views against some of what is being done there and will probably continue to do so. The fact he is getting paid handsomely is neither here nor there as everyone out commentating on the World Cup is getting paid silly money regardless! If no one is there to highlight the differences in culture then how can change ever really happen? Check out the video on Overlap with Pique, he talks about how the World Cup in '82 in Spain helped push forward massive change - they were transitioning from General Franco's dictatorship. Football helped accelerate change. At the end of the day, Qatar is a Muslim country with Muslim rules. It will be up to the youth from that country to ultimately force change and that won't happen without the eyes of the World on them. Getting back to football however, the 1994 World Cup was held in the football powerhouse of USA!! A team made up of American Football players and armatures essentially. No one could possibly expected much but it was easily the best World Cup in my living memory (41 y/o). The question is, was it the venue that made it such an iconic World Cup or was it the fact that the teams in general were fantastic? The last 4 or so World Cups have been dire. Not because of where they were held, but because the level of football now is far less than it used to be... and the players are on ridiculous wages... {but as it isn't Qatari paid wages then it is ok to get £500k a week}. Pots and kettles and all that jazz.
Why are people in the comments on Gary's Neck, he stated that the workforce is not treated well and there is a few rules in a country where they are not willing to change because of visitors. Great idea and great access unfortunately Gary gave them an easy ride. He asked a difficult question but then didn't chase it with another difficult question or quiz them on there answer
That might have something to do with being in Qatar. He probably realised he has been fed a lot of bull in the Uk about Qatar and then just asked the basic questions to fulfil his duties. Gary probably realised that Qatar has its own way of living and the mess which is Europe isnt the standard to achieve.
@@samueldavids3704 "Has it's own way of living" is just a diversion to avoid saying what that phrase actually means: inadequate workers rights, huge wealth inequality, oppressing women and making being gay literally illegal. Qatar, Abu Dhabi, and soon Saudi Arabia are now huge powers in this sport. Qatari-owned PSG's signing of Messi, resigning of Mbappe was all part of Qatar's quest to the very top of the game, and it is a part of wider sport-washing. Sport-washing, that by the looks of this film, has worked on Gary Neville, who spends his time whinging about US investment in the PL and is now distracted, while Manchester City and PSG sign 22-year-olds to the biggest contracts in the history of the sport. While he didn't actively avoid the controversy, his half-hearted attempt at interrogating these people is not good enough, but hardly surprising considering the wonderful contract beIN have put in front of him to work at this World Cup.

A bit tiring hearing the British media constantly criticising Qatar World Cup and the endless virtue signalling of how righteous the west is. The unfortunate thing is the majority of western people are absolutely clueless about how the cultures and the rest of the world behaves. How about this… here’s a country giving opportunities to a lot and lot of people from third world countries a job, in a secure, clean and respectful country, that allows people send money back home to feed and cloth their families, vs most western countries who wouldn’t even allow those same people to enter their country without spending years and years studying, and even then you’ll have jump through a thousand hoops. Come on people give the country a bloody chance… the world doesn’t revolve around western society and culture. It’s called the World Cup, not the Western values World Cup.
I've never understood the alcohol argument by certain people. Who cares if you can't drink, get over it, and if your caught having drugs over there, good luck to you and you deserve whatever punishment you get. But at the end of the day their culture and way of living is up to them, they can't accommodate just for the people coming into the country. The only thing that should be questioned is how they even got it in the first place
I was at the World Club Final that is referred to in this piece. Contrary to what is claimed here, it was not a good football experience. the fan zone referred to was miles away from the stadium. A small group of Brazilian fans in the Souk area who were singing and dancing and just having fun were moved on by the police. Alcohol was almost impossible to get as if you don't stay in a hotel where there is a bar like I did, then when it was busy the hotel bars were full of their own residents and did not allow in non-residents. The whole experience in the country was rather negative. I spoke to a number of other fans there also who also had similar experiences. This World Cup will be a disaster for fans. But with pieces like this who gloss over everything, we may not hear about the true negatives of the fan experience.

I would like instead to see someone like Philipe Auclair doing such a piece but I doubt that either the Qataris or FIFA for that matter would allow that. Gary touched on a number of important issues but never probed much further once the official line was given. Although to give him his due, he did push back a little on the workers rights section. I think in doing such a piece you should come pre armed with facts and figures and then when you get the official answer, which you know is coming, then have a ready follow up question ready to go also to try and get to the heart of the matter. I don't feel that Garys reasons for doing this hold much water either. These are the sorts of arguments made in many similar circumstances and I am yet to see any positive results. He isn’t the poster boy. His best mate beckham is. Got paid 200 million by Qatar to do ads for them and tell everyone it’s a great place.

People in the west need to stop complaining and put down their superiority complex. What you all fail to understand is that only through events like the World Cup or the Olympics where the west pays attention, do these people get a chance to progress and pressure those who rule to open up. The best method of change is integration with those who we aspire to chance for the better. It should have been in Russia this year would have been amazing.

@@SlugsOfDoom Wait. Who are you to say they have inadequate workers rights? What is that absed off and what do workers rights in your country look like (especially for foreigners)? Judging by historical fan behaviour, alot of England fans aren't making it back from Qatar. Most of them will deserve what ever happens to them.

I get this video I think it highlights some important issues. Looking at the England team and our own ethics I would love to know who makes the England kits for NIKE and where they are made? So little is made of this and we have to judge ourselves by the same standard as we judge everyone else.
Just to mention... Saudi, UAE, Qatar investments are controllable, unlike US investments...

Did you ask him about human rights and womens freedom in his country? I know he didn't, but let's all kick a football together and make alot of money! We might talk about it after the World Cup when the spotlight isn't there so we won't be seen as bad, we just won't talk about it now or for the next few months. Carry on.

considering human rights watch and Amnesty international declared them an apartheid state?

No different to David Beckham pontificate on twitter to the trash heap but in reality paid off paid quiet and sheepishly following along. The fury, rage & anger in the fellas response for Gary daring to mention LGBTQ concerns was so evident.
Describing criminalising homosexuality as 'nuances' is absolutely abhorrent.
Always got the impression Gary was a spineless weasel, this video just confirms it. Bet he got a lovely paycheck mind. Blinded by the cheque.
"Fury, rage & anger"? Are you serious?
Keep your filthy morals out of a Muslim country . You lot champion freedom of expression and then cry when someone opposes your so called human rights
What are the LGBT concerns exactly? If men and women are kissing in public they would be advised not to out of respect. Same for men! Nobody is going to be arrested for fuck sake!

What the hell?? Homosexuality isn’t part of their cultures. Respect it

Nice Gary, follow A true football legend.
Can't believe how naive the Qataris are in terms of the type of people that will be coming over to the country for the World Cup. That section where they're showing Gary that impressive cruise is just nuts. Imagine 6,000 pissed up football fans from different nations mixing on that boat after a win/defeat. They will smash the living daylights out of it.
says more about the classless fans then yet people will focus on qataries
@@JayA-io7wj No I agree with you, but the simple fact is that footballing fans are aggressive by nature and passionate. They clearly don't understand that concept at all and expect them all to be well behaved

Put the blinkers on and enjoy the Football. Nothing to see here.
The fact we can't drink within the stadium is good in my opinion. We can appreciate and respect the football for what it is. Not to mention the most important is to respect the host nations culture. It's a good start to bringing us all together and having less diversity.
My heart goes to all those who lost their lives and to their families. Shameful!!
Yeah and my heart goes out to all the innocent people that died when the UK and US invaded Iraq for "Weapons of mass destruction". AKA oil

Well said. The focus on Alcohol is disgusting.
Agreed to OP comment, but to the response, alcohol is only disgusting to those that shouldn’t be drinking
@@Abusedvillian I said the focus on Alcohol. Maybe someone needs to go to back to school to get some comprehension skills.
What were you expecting something different?
@@sevans606 You mean from Gary or from Qatar?
From Gary yes I expected a lot more. He is incredibly vocal and rather enjoyable to listen to on a lot of issues. He is happy to talk at length and speak his truth to power but here he seems to have lost his voice somewhat. I doubt, given some of his recent appearances, if he would be so accommodating were he to be speaking to Liz Truss.
From Qatar, I didn't know what to expect. I basically only went as I was using Qatar Airways, as I often to do, to fly home for Christmas. When I was booking my flights, they were offering a free ticket and a few cheap nights in a hotel if you wanted to layover for a few days in Qatar. So I figured why not have a a little holiday before Christmas and see my beloved Reds into the bargain..
@@martinkenny7297 I think to be fair Martin, there is plenty of criticism in this documentary and the fact he was even allowed to film and release it at all was a huge step. I'm not entirely sure what you expect Gary to do, other than completely boycott it. But he has explained why he doesn't feel that is a good option.
@@pianostool44 I take your point Phil and yes these sorts of things are big steps. However, the only reason they are being allowed now is because of the World Cup coming up. I wonder all anybody be allowed this sort of reportage come January. I am also sure that Gary is allowed to do this as the authorities understand what sort of a piece it is likely to be.
In Russia four years ago, or in China when they had the Olympics, the same arguments were made. I think we can all agree that not much has changed in China and Russia has shown itself to have regressed, to say the least, significantly in terms its human rights record.
then dont come back again mate.who is forcing u🤣
“Cost around $1 billion”
“So it actually cost less than Tottenham?”
Strange isn’t that Gary? Maybe dig a little bit deeper into why it was cheaper? Maybe something to do with “cost of labour” presumably more expensive to employ a builder or electrician in London than it is to not pay a migrant worker in Qatar.
Really surprised Gary has signed up to Bein sports obv knew he would be on itv as per but he’s going all in being on bein spesh with Keys. Be interesting to see how many supporters bother with this World Cup with booze hard to find and not in the stadium. I’m off to Tenerife for the first week of it and can see more doing that instead of bothering with Qatar.
Hypocrite at its finest, stating all the atrocities in Qatar while being hired by bein to. Be protestor.
