That little nod that he gives when he hears that Hokus is okay. See guys? It's the little things that Bungie did that made this game so great.
Posed to be bighill news on a couple days I would like your perspective on that
Slightly earlier in that cutscene: The Forward Unto Dawn isn't visible among the fleet that comes through the portal.
I don't think it was to hokus. I think it was to the odst beside him
I respect your work but the dumb marine with the rocket launcher will sometimes blow you up lol on the cruiser
I saw another comment where they talked about the momentary free fall of the pelican leaving the In Amber Clad. Johnson and the pilot floated for a bit, before the inertia of the pelican thrusters forced them back to their seats. Wonderful attention to detail
Gotta love how you respect and use the marines's potential to their maximum. It feels like that's how Chief would do his missions.
sumerian88 it's what he does in the books
Elite: Brute Ships! Staggard Line! Shipmaster They outnumber us three to one!
*Shipmaster: Look we got four or five of the main characters on this ship I think we’ll be fine.*
Tank beats ghost!
Tank beats hunters!
Tank beat EVERYTHING!
Your profile pic matches so well with your comment.
Ah, man! I could do this all day!
I need a weapon.
The opening cutscene to this level is probably the most magnificent in video game history
I agree😀.
I agree. It feels incredibly epic
When the elite said “ they outnumber us, 3 to 1” does that mean they’re going to fight with their 9 ships against 27 Truth’s ships?
Miguel Salas maybe more, they still won
Carcosa Indeed
“They outnumber us 3 to 1”
“Then it is an even fight”
"All cruisers, fire at will! Burn their mongrel hides!"
This is a bit off topic, but I think they should totally add a command system that allows you to give specific orders to friendly NPCs. Commands like: "Get in the passenger seat", "Stay here and hold this position." or "Go over there with your sniper rifle and cover me."
Corey Carousso Looks like another fan of Star Wars Battlefront.
Corey Carousso Welcome to Halo 5
+Charlie Burton ha
Are you a time traveler
Because halo 5 did what you did
Exept more linear like attack this or grab that weapon
Its also gimmicky (no one ever uses it)
Sounds like a weird idea, it kinda goes against the simplicity of Halo
I know this video is 8-ish years old, but I just wanted to stop by again and say how helpful these guides have been. There are so many legendary speedrun guides, but almost no simple "walkthroughs" where you actually fight your way through the level normally.
I swear every single marine in this game is voiced by Nolan North, Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk and Adam Baldwin.
The Marauder Better to have a small collection of good voice actors than a large collection of bad ones.
Hokiebird428 thats true :)
The Marauder don't forget Chips Dubbo.
The man. The myth. The legend.
Kinda like fallout new vegas
Yes. Yes they did. Halo 2 was soooo close to being perfect, but had a few game ruining mistakes. Halo 3 realized this and corrected it, which is why it is my favorite game of the series by a mile.
But jackal snipers still pwn with one hit on legendary tho
@@neonsolace2748 You know what I think? I'm sure they were well aware of that and just added it to Halo 3 just to spite us. LOL
@@neonsolace2748 Except in Halo 3, once they spot you, you actually have an actual opening to hide from/shoot at them before they instakill you.
@@valkyrion_ex1173 halo 2 legendary time before getting sniped is too ridiculous. its like the jackal doesnt even adjust his aim.
In halo 3 if ure moving they will actually miss at least one shot.
@@neonsolace2748 that's true but they aren't as fast or accurate.
Back when I used to play this years ago, I noticed an interesting difference between the ODSTs and the regular marines. The ODSTs have a faster rate of fire, and longer range. I noticed this when taking 2 ODST passengers on the warthog with rocket and gunner that hit targets further away and fired faster than doing it with 2 regular marines in the same setup.
That's why they are ODST
Late, but this is great advice and something I noticed only recently.
ODSTs were trained a bit better than marines
I somehow managed to ensure the marines riding my scorpion had fuel rod guns and rocket launchers, and it was the most satisfying thing in all of Halo. Just roll through, no precautions necessary, so easy I forgot I was on Legendary.
C4sual G4mer this always happens to me and of course there was that one time where during one final effort I had an elite with a fuel rod, a marine with a fuel rod, a marine with a spartan lazer, and a marine with a rocket launcher in one tank it was the most awesome thing ever.
Hokie, if you grab the rocket launcher ammo buy the downed longsword fighter at 12:47 and add the ammo to the marines ammo you'll have a full rocket launcher. and with that before entering the area with where the Dawn lands you can rocket snipe the Wraith, shade, all the elevated platforms making the area so much easier to clean up. This saves sniper enough sniper ammo to kill almost all the brutes and grunts making it more fun and easier.
THAT POOR GRUNT @ 12:32! LMFO!
your guides are good, I use your tactics 90% of the time
I end up having to improvise. I remember the first time I beat legendary with Hokie helping, at least 2 things would go wrong since I'd forget a vital step in each mission lol.
What a great job, btw
Truth i would not have even got through with Halo 2 on easy without him
@@bongibot1104 Same thing happened to me during my Reach Legendary run. I ended up having to go off-script a few times, but I figured it out. Hokie's guides are a lifesaver.
I have a fan theory. The reason the ship master was able to take on truths entire fleet without sustaining any causalities is thanks to human mathematical understanding and upgrades provided to elite ships thanks to cortanas findings in halo first strike. Remember the ascendant justice? It's a lot less glorious but actually makes sense given how outnumbered they were. The reason regrets ship was able to make an atmospheric jump is thanks to a covenant ai stealing cortanas tuning of covenant slip space capabilities using human mathematics.
Furoki actually he lost half his fleet.
I think that exploring the city at night as the Rookie, alone, not knowing what's around the next corner is some of the most fun I've ever had in a Halo campaign.
One trick I found for all of the chopper sections (tsavo highway, ark, etc.) is that when you're within a certain range, they won't shoot. If you can find the spot at which your fuel rod/rocket marines can hit them but they don't start shooting at you, you can kind of kite them. Just aim at them and drive straight backwards and you'll take care of em in no time. For tsavo highway though this strategy was only able to take two choppers at a time out, so if you get caught by more than that at a time, hide behind the bridge and you can circle back around them and yse the normal strats. Awesome vids tho man!
Hokie's school of terminology
'Pretty Deal-withable' - meaning a normal person would be screwed but for someone who knows what he is doing, he can still handle the situation like a badass.
Wow, that is a hell lot of marines! I used to waste so much of my energy in Halo CE trying to save the Marines and trying to make use of them. But there it was a losing battle and the marines often were of not much help. They would more often than not complicate matters by running into the open and dying or scattering the covenant all around you, dying and leaving you surrounded if you weren't careful. I would always wonder, "only if I could give this rocket launcher I am backtracking for to my marine or this random health pack I don't need to Johnson". Glad to see Bungie actually allowed us to do what we always wanted to do - make marines a ton of useful annihilators. You maximise it, as always. So much so, that sometimes I feel sad that you didn't do any work at all - like that time with the marines with a bunch of fuel rod guns. But I am sure I will be perfectly happy if I manage that when I play the game.
Wrong Turn Some marines had snipers
Imafishbish of course they still suffer from horrible ai and low health.
00:10 the hell how bungie tried to imagine this scene is just as incredible as it is nowadays now ❤️
Hey Hokie, sorry for being 4 years too late but you can save that marine at 41:45 pretty easily, if, before the cutscene, you place down deployable cover it blocks the grenade (and also kills the grunts!).
Thanks for all the quality walkthroughs!
Love the walkthroughs, man. Totally changes the way I view the NPC marines. I used to think they were just put there for fodder and story purposes, but using them as an additional "weapon"? Just awesome.
+David Hanna hell yeah man. they have infinite ammo
Gotta love how you respect and use the marines' to their best. I'm glad they made it so you give the marines guns
My favorite Halo mission ever.
hey, theres actually an incredibly easy thing to do when you were in the cave about to head to the LZ. If a Chopper is laying around anywhere, you can use it to take out every single wraith and sniper tower from inside the cave. Choppers have amazing range.
+0blalb0 Yeah, but the prowler is more fun. And you don't leave your squad behind to get slaughtered.
I just want to say now, that I appreciate your having keept swearing to a minimum.
I remember just spamming these levels on Heroic as a kid. It seems like there really is an art to doing it on legendary, if you strategically use weapons and can predict how the Covenant spawn.
I was in the middle of cooking when you said Hokie bird then I was like hey I go to VT too lol
Really enjoy your videos man. It's nostalgic watching you expertly play through maps I poured so many hours into back in the day.
Whenever I get around to it. I have two tests, homework, and work to worry about before I can focus on making videos.
I swear you need more subscribers for these work you did for showing
people and me how to pass this level in Legendary!!!!!
Thank you for the videos! I love how you don't talk too much and don't over kill simple points that Halo players should know. Seriously the best walkthroughs I have ever seen.
And I like how half mouth (Spec. Ops Elite from Halo 2) became the captain of a cruiser.
Dark Soldier Rtas 'Vadum is commonly known as Half-Jaw.
Hokiebird428 Well? Close enough. Me and my little bro didn't know his correct name, so we just call him "half-mouth". This was over a decade ago when we use to play Halo 2. But thanks for the correction though.
+Dark Soldier carrier*
Rtas was always a shipmaster since halo 2
you're walkthroughs are great
Hokie, just wanted to say thank you for all of your walkthroughs, you are the only one that I really follow.
It is so satisfying to see it done cleanly!
Great Job
27:55
i like how they actually added a reaction for guiltyspark if you shoot at the door
(granted you were shooting the shade turret, but still)
Tank beats Ghost!
Tank beats Hunter!
Tank beats EVERYTHING! :D
Thanks HaloNinga428 for these incredibly helpful and informative guides✌🏻
Watching this during lockdown period was good.
You helped me greatly to finally pass all of halo 3 on legendary. thanks
8:05 - 8:06
Watch that grunt fly! Holy shit.
Never once considered using marines to my advantage till I watched this. GG
The last fight in this mission was so hard for me, but you pulled it off so elegantly. Insane strategy
This man has some of the most fun and effective strats, even his playthrough of Regret in Halo 2 was fun as hell
remember watching these guide and Reach's back in 2015, still very useful
I like how you approach this mission (and many others) like you're playing a RTS game.
You are very generous to your marines
The opening cutscene is how it feels when all the bars close on New Years and you and your friends are trying to make it to McDonalds
What an amazing walkthrough
23:32 TANK SLAUGHTER!!
34:09 😁
36:33 Guilty Spark knew what he was doing 😁
36:55 assassin mode
37:53 assassin mode part 2
42:36 R.I.P. fallen Marine
Love u. I was really nervous about the last part but I did it.
Probably my favorite mission on Halo 3
You are now my favorite youtuber indeed. :)
@Hokiebird428
If you're still seeing old comments, first, I just want to say that your legendary guides and your channel in general is awesome content, so cheers to that :)
Second, I'm not sure if you tried this yet, but I have been able to save both marines (armed with power weapons) in the final act of the mission (the way I tried and was able to do consistently with enough practice, however was before I found your guide). I simply picked up and kept a bubble shield, kept it until the cartographer, and deployed it by the female marine before starting the cutscene; I usually skip the cutscene, and she doesn't get stuck with the grenade; then with enough practice, I can proceed as normal and finish the remaining fights (and the mission) deathless and keep both of them alive at the end (their usefulness with the Brute pack varies with weapon choice and whether they hang back or charge in the fight)
I just read your most recent tweet, and i'm impressed that you got only two deaths for The Covenant walkthrough.
28:56 one of the transporter hog fell of the bridge!!😂
Those hunters were the hardest part of the level. Good call on using the plasma turrets.
What a great job, honestly
“you bastards! he was going to be extremely useful!” 😂
Hey, at 28:00, you can actually take a Brute Chopper through there, it's small enough to fit through the door inside the structure you activate the light bridge in. I believe there is a perfectly in-tact one that always spawns when you first enter that area. Hell, you can play the whole second half of the level riding a chopper.
11:26 man that setup is so tough to accomplish, those marines just run into vehicles like mad men, i can't even get my snipers and rpg in my side seats 0.o and once i move out to search for them another will take my driver seat and drive the prawler away... fantastic :)
THIS IS AMAZING
This is one of the best levels in the franchise in my opinion.
i found a warthog in this mission and i uesd it
Best Mission ever man love the intro movie :D
Wow, the prowler with heavy weapon marines kicks ass; from what I've experienced.
Awesome video hokie
Awesome mission.
Is it me or do all the marines just end up killing them selves
Ye. Either go back to last checkpoint or learn to live without them. I prefer the first option.
cameronadams68 Well they have no shields, only battle rifles and assault rifles, and are bad at driving.
Good Game I mean battle rifles are good against weaker infantry and you can give them better weapons anyways.
Marines are a good ally to have if you give them good weapons but ultimately I'd consider them expendable
Yep they shoot each other accidentally and elites always stick each other accidentally 🤦
Great video as always :-)
117k views that's fantastic
So excited for the master chief collection
At 41:40 I found if you have a bubble shield and throw it outside the locked door the beam rifle marine is behind, It will protect her from the plasma grenade when you enter the room and maybe kill some grunts. Pain in the butt to get her to stay alive once the chieftain enters but it is possible. This was on MCC. Thanks for the guides by the way.
The fuel rod gun grunts during the scarab fight also appear on Heroic actually.
Hokie, THANK U SOO MUCH. Your walkthroughs helped me a ton in the CEA campaign. I have just one question: is the game engine in Halo 3 the same? I mean, will the weapons you dropped stay there like CEA or despawn?
No one does better Halo Walkthroughs than Hokie!
People who keep their marines alive, that's a real Halo player.
This has to be my favorite mission in the entire franchise along with boulevard kizingo from ODST
One thing I found out the hard way was that when you snipe the Brute out of the Wraith turret at the LZ, sometimes there will be another Brute who hikes over from the raised platform to the left of the cave and rearms the turret. It also helps to bring the rocket launcher with you, since you can then use it to take out the raised platform to the right and the Shade. Just be mindful of any Brutes looking to get back in that turret, it will kill you instantly if you let them.
That opening cutscene though....
A tip for tacking the landing zone area: If you keep the rocket launcher for a little longer, you can make it useful by destroying the shade turret near the first wraith, as well as destroying the raised platform near the rock bunker. I guess you could do this with the fuel rod gun, but I think that’s just a waste of ammo.
A thing of note is that the Brute stalkers' camo won't properly reflect the glass surfaces, which I find makes it easier to pin point where they are. You can clearly see them if they're standing on glass ( like at 43:11 ). If they're not, they are incredibly difficult to spot.
41:37 what if you have a bubble shield and put it onto the other side of the door. Don't get it? Ok so after you hit the switch and turn around there is two doors. Your supposed to go through the left one but if you put a bubble shield at the right one will that save him when you go through the left one?
you would be good as a mission instructor dude
I've seen the marines fall off that bridge at 28:50, especially the ones driving warthogs. For whatever reason, they sometimes go right off the edge instead of crossing the bridge.
great vids
Memories ❤😭
hey hokie how come you dont arm the marine gunner in the prowler with the rocket launcher before grabbing the fuel rod gun? Also I tried HTR's idea of bringing the tank to the lower level, and it does indeed work they do follow you into the scarab section.
Hokie, what seems to work really well for me in that first encounter is to quickly give one of my marines with an AR a sniper, take the new one at the top of the hill, and then kill the first three brutes, and then swap that sniper with another marine, and then go on my merry way, picking up that last sniper on the way out
THANK YOU SO FUCKING MUCH FOR NOT TALKING OVER THE INTO CUTSEENS like seriously why dose everyone alse ruin these beautiful intros but talking about some shit. Love the vids man
I never noticed the arbiter yell at spark at 36:39 like he's his disobedient child 🤣
the tank bit when i did it i got 3 of the 4 marines with fuel rods worked well
I also like conserving sniper ammo from the beginning till the end of the mission and then just laying waste to all the jet pack brutes in the finale. I still wish the stalkers were more invisible and there were more sections with them. Nice job finding a tactic with good success rate at the anti-air wraith part. I just like to drive a rocket prowler around the brute watchtower's hill over and over until every damn ghost is dead and I find that part to be the very hardest in the campaign.
RIP that ODST with the fuel rod gun
Edit: holy shit the same guy that killed your ODST killed your marine passenger on the spyre lmao
27:47 "Fuck you, you will respect mai allies, shit heap of metal"
41:22 badass kill by arbiter
thank you to showing me the phantoms weaks spot
You can actually drive a chopper into the small area in the final part of the Ark mission, took it to the cartographer and then to the pelican, makes it alot easier on legendary, owning all the brutes with ease. I drove it towards the pelican at the end, the cutscene shows the chopper failed to reach the pelican and fell off, 1 second later master chief shows up on the platform from nowhere XD
Hey Hookie have you ever did this strategy for the Scarab fight: Right before going to the Wall to activate the bridge, have a marine either with a rocket launcher or fuel rod, get a mongoose, take him though the Wall, and have him ride shotgun from the gauss. I been doing this for years since Halo 3 came out. I just followed your strategy, while improvising some problems I encountered.
On a sidenote: you can save the marine that gets killed from the grenade at the end, you just need to deploy a cover, which is easier said than done once you enter the structure.
EDIT: I posted this on the wrong video. Sorry.
If you manage to save a bubble shield you can save the marine that gets grenaded. while in the outside bit, instead of going in the open door go to the right to see a sealed door. drop the shield there and it passes through the wall and covers the marine
