Weapon Swapping is one of the most ingenious additions that Bungie made to this series. It adds so much to strategizing how best to handle any situation, as Hokie so expertly demonstrates.
Silent Cartographer was unique, but not the best. Quarantine was a 50-50. AoTCR? While I could see why people love it, by today's standards, it's actually kinda bad. Delta Halo definitely can rival this. But overall, this mission was a complete package!
The Ark and The Covenant have got to be one of the best levels in the entire Halo Saga. They're a culmination of the things that we loved in Halo packed into these two huge levels.
Probably because they are two big ass well designed vehicle missions with tons of allies and opportunities for different types of combat. Halo has since walked away from this type of gameplay
I know this is old but, I feel like this is worth commenting. If you want almost endless hours of entertainment, get this far on legendary with All Skulls on, or at least all those that affect enemy health, armor, etc. By far, I mean the temporary alliance with the Flood. When gameplay starts back up, have fun watching the endless waves of flood slowly whittle away at the Covenant, resetting to last checkpoint as needed. I have seen some very interesting results by doing this, up to and including Covenant jumping off cliffs, endless battles between flood and fuel rod grunts, and even a couple times where the pure forms were shot off the edges. Sounds boring to some, but if you're that bored and need something to do, this is one of the better ways to experiment stuff like this in. The second area especially with the abundance of brutes really lets one experiment with the infection forms AI patterns. And since they are programmed to be permanently friendly until Truth's cutscene, you can friendly kill them if too many get stuck at no worry to you. Just an interesting tidbit i felt like sharing, its a son of a bitch to get this far with the skulls on but I've found the reward of seeing such battles is worth the wait if you're willing to get that far.
You know Hokie. You probably have the best guides. I like how you effectively you use the marines (and elites) and how you really try to keep them alive.
You and the act man are the best RUclipsrs, the passion that you guys have for this game is unbelievable and deserve way, way more subscribers. Hope you see this comment
Would it be a good idea when you get the warthog in the beginning to not immediately get in and actually walk up with the laser and coax the banshees to nosedive and get them with the laser as they are pretty poor at hitting moving infantry targets?
There are so many appearances across the series where a single fuel rod shot is enough to down a pelican, yet in the double scarab fight a random pelican is there for the sole purpose of face-tanking an infinite amount of direct hits from the 2nd scarab's main gun for no reason besides spoiling the difficulty of that fight. Never understood that.
It's so annoying when it never gives you checkpoints in combat, but when your savaging for ammo it gives you 2 in a row (making it impossible to revert to previous checkpoint if you need to save a marine etc)
No. Tyrant doesn't know what the fuck he's doing. The fuel Rod Hog is just as powerful, and MUCH more maneuverable. Plus, it allows you to bring the Marines with you, and arm them with the Fuel Rod Gun and Spartan Laser, so that you can have them in your Hornet with you.

If you forget to take a beam rifle with you as Hokie suggests so that you can take out the fuel rod grunts at the last segment of the mission, you can still take them out with a couple of short bursts from the battle rifle which is what I did.
I don't like that, 'cause both grunts are too far to shot them with a battle rifle, same with carbine. With the beam rifle as soon as you appear you can zoom and shot them.
Wow all this time my buddies and I never knew you could take out the Scarabs from the air like that, we always thought you had to get inside them lol. Aw well, it's more fun that way
Just today I actually beat this level on legendary thinking I was playing it on heroic, I also ended up beating the par score set for this level and got a super rare achievement that apparently only 2% of gamers have unlocked. Well yelling at the TV and calling bullshit every time I died payed off...

" oh hey look who made it" 5 seconds later gets blown to bits by fuel rods, "well they didnt last very long" lol I died RIP mongoose. how long did it take to construct the replacement ring?
Old comment but I'll answer anyway. The Ark keeps an almost-complete Halo in its forge at all times, so it's more accurate to ask is how long the Ark took to _finish_ the replacement ring - at least, up to the point that it's able to fire. CE is set around the end of September 2552 - Master Chief rescues Cortana from _High Charity_ on December 11 2552. So it took the Ark about 2 months to finish constructing Installation 04B.
Hokie I know im almost a decade late, but thank you for these guides. Not because it makes the halo games less grueling on legendary, but because I see and use the strategy aspect of the games. I used to stay back and shoot everything from range, but now I use allies to their full capacity.
This is a great guide, I like to get tips, but did do some of this quite different. I did the opening part by running along the beach and coming up behind the gold elite with the fuel rod gun. Once he’s done the rest get wrapped up pretty easily. Then I did the two hunters in the second tower with the gravity hammer, takes 3 or 4 hits from behind. The Arbiter keeps them busy and you can whack them ok. very important to have beam rifle for the chieftain with the hammer, solves that problem ok, I hardly died at all. I remember that being a nightmare on normal when I first played it with the wrong guns…
The Ark and the Covenant are the finest Halo as a series has to offer imo, they're like Delta Halo and Regret but on steroids, with literally every one of Halo's most classic aspects. Chief, Arbiter, Marines, Covenant, Ground Vehicles, Air Vehicles, the Flood... I honestly don't think they left anything out of the classic formula. It helps that this is the conclusion of uh, the main plot of the Human-Covenant War and the Halos all resolving together, right here, and you make it happen. It also helps that they provide the most theatrical larger-than-life alien personalities; Truth, Arbiter, Gravemind, they speak like modernized Shakespeare. Almost every line is art. And then the Chief says "It's Chiefing time" and Chiefs all over them.
Love this mission def in my top 3 favorite missions with delta halo in there and assault on control room but absolutely love “the ark” as well and actually love Flood Gate as well. Halo 3 is just gold to me
This Mission started awesomely but fell apart miserably in the latter half. The tank section had the feel of an on Rails shooter. The second Hornet section felt more enclosed because the scarabs only spun around randomly in place. The final room was a linear thin platform with few enemy variations
I find that fighting the wraith is much easier if you snipe the brute manning the turret on the wraith beforehand. I usually use the beam rifle on that weapons crate that you got. Just park your warthog very near the rock, and your warthog is guaranteed safe on heroic.
If you stop moving before the Wraith is dead in order to snipe the turret gunner, you run the risk of getting blown to pieces by the Wraith itself, so it's not a strategy I'd suggest for a Noob's Guide, or for Legendary.
BlueShit199 Yup, it was a little odd that the Gravemind didn't swing at Master Chief and The Arbiter right away. A bit dumb. And hey, I see you also comment on BigMacDavis' Half-Life walkthrough guides, right?
I found that grabbing dual plasma rifles from a crate near the end instead of the carbine makes fighting the last waves of combat and carrier forms much easier since they can strip shields and decimate the bodies.
Holy shit, I’ve been playing this game since release and have easily played through the entire campaign 10+ times, how am I just now learning you can shoot the back plate off the scarab? I normally use a hornet to kamikaze myself into the first scarab then use a guass to take out the second and it’s so much harder lmao
HokieBird - 40:22 I think you made a mistake with that bit, saying the grunts with fuel rods guns only appear on legendary. The reason why I said 'I think' is because I was playing MCC and they appeared on heroic (no balls to play legendary yet CD) and I was surprised. It caught me out because I didn't have a beam rifle but they appear in the first and 2nd part like so in your video. I know you've done practice runs and checked on herois so that's why you said they only appear on legendary so it still confuses me. Is it because I was playing MCC and you was playing Halo 3? I did have a few skulls on but the only one I think that would make this affect is thunderstorm. Grunt birthday party wouldnt affect this and i think the other was Cowbell. Not sure if that helps but again... they did appear on Heroic for me on MCC
I know you how you always equipped the Marines with power weapons would you make all the great help. But I would like to see a video where you save all the Marines on the hardest levels. I always try to save the Marines myself, but I found it much easier after watching your videos. But it is still very difficult. I feel like you could make a science of it.
I love how Hokiebird often speaks of the accompanying marines like the mindless idiots that they are 8mins 15sec (8min 15sec). They definitely can be frustrating as hell.
Well this is embarrassing. I never knew you can kill scarabs from the hornet, I always landed on them and took the core out with the mounted plasma turrets. Pretty hard on legendary.
@Hokiebird428 I made it to the elevator in the final barrier tower but my weapons are a carbine with around 40 shots and a battle rifle with max. ammo, any tips?
Thank u for this video this is the only misssion im really having trouble with i was thinking of doing a legendary guide yea but thank you this really helps
At the 12:34 mark, all but the Chieftain are always cloaked for me, even on Normal mode. Not sure if this is due to a patch (I'm playing the TMCC Edition), or different platform. I'm on PC, but since you're using a gamepad, not sure what platform you're on. I did however glean some great tips on weapon swapping in key places with the squad, so thanks for that.
In Your halo 2 tutorial for Gravemind you recommended using the brute shot against the drones but here you recommend dual plasma rifles. Is it because they nerfed the brute shot in halo 3?
They didn't nerf the Brute Shot for Halo 3. Remember, in Crow's Nest, I recommend using it against your first encounter with Drones. No, you definitely could use a Brute Shot in the third tower here...if you can find one, and even if you can, unless you can find more than one, it's going to come with less than a full clip of ammo. I like the Plasma Rifles, especially as a strategy for a walkthrough because there's zero chance that you'll be unable to find them: they're sitting in a dispenser as you enter the room. Another option is to simply use the Fuel Rod Gun against both the Drones, and the Hunters. If you pick up ammo from outside like I showed, you should have enough. That's kinda the beauty of Halo 3 though. Almost every encounter has multiple different effective ways of handling it, and/or possible "solutions" even on Legendary!
Hokiebird428 Did you ever notice that incendiary grenade are ineffective against hunters? One play-through of this level i left the hunters alive before killing the chieftan. I then killed the stalkers/cheiftan, took the incendiary grenades back downstairs and then threw them on the hunters and nothing happened. I tried the same thing on halo 4 and they still dont work. It makes me wonder if bungie/343i dont properly program their weapons.
ManofChrist101 That's probably supposed to happen... Hunters don't have a central nervous system, and any pain from burns will most likely not be sent to the brain correctly. Also, I don't imagine hunters being very flammable. Their armor is quite thick, and it covers most of their body.
1) What happened to all those Marines after the Chief and the Arbiter went at it alone? 2) Since this guy is so good at proving that this game is a strategy game, maybe I should stick around for the Anniversary edition.
Wow, thx for the guide! When i activated the elevator, i jumped towards the terminal and then i couldn't use the elevator anymore. I was wondering why there wasnt any progression on my game
Man I had a really rough go at this. First of all the weapons crate that had the beam rifles in it wasn't there. There was some rubble around so maybe it got destroyed or something, and not to point fingers but I think it was YOU Fuel Rod passenger. Then I misunderstood what you were saying about the invisibility and thought you meant you were going to use it on that first Brute but didn't, so I used it to go in and assassinate him since I didn't have a Beam Rifle. Then when I got to the top of the tower I found out what you meant, so I had to take on that room with no invisibility or a Beam Rifle. Then I ran into some stupid glitch where after the Hornet section my Invincibility turned into a Bubble Shield. It was Invincibility when I picked it up, and when I got on the Hornet, but when I landed I had a Bubble Shield. So then I had get a little creative with the Chiefan in the second tower, I kept shooting at him with the Needler as I closed the distance (because he wouldn't fire and kept jumping to evade) and then whipped out the Gravity Hammer and killed him. Then when I got in the tank an idiot Marine on the left side fired point blank into a rock, neither of the guys on that side died but my Fuel Rod and Spartan Laser guys on the other side died. So I had to jump off pick that stuff up and switch them out with the other guys. I was able to finish it though, the video really helped. I wouldn't think of most of your strategies.
In the final battle with the Covenant inside the Citadel, the Grunts with Fuel Rods in the first room appear on any difficulty, the second pair and the Plasma Turret, only appear on Legendary.
I just realized why they call halo a strategy game...

The flood would instantly destroy humanity. WE have literally no way of fleeing them.
It would be amazing if they destroyed us all.
@@jballs5434 Edgy.
Great guide. Love this mission
Halo should be the worlds best game. Thank you Bungie
I just finished this on legendary and honestly it was the easiest mission in the H3 campaign. But also the most fun :D
DictatorSayers ikr this and the ark were the best.. The storm at third and tsavo highway after that.. Halo 3 got so many things right.
You make Legendary look fun. I'm really bad at strategy games.
16:46 you’re not invincible even on other difficulties.
this mission it's awsome!!! it's so epic and the MUSIC!!
The elite with the fuel rod gun got in the warthog and I was in the scorpion with a Spartan laser, rocket and fuel rod gun
Man this mission has some gorgeous visuals
+jeremy ray yes, you should be right
This is nearly my 80th time watching this
Wow, thx for the guide! When i activated the elevator, i jumped towards the terminal and then i couldn't use the elevator anymore. I was wondering why there wasnt any progression on my game
40:00 The one and only section of the og Halo campaigns I enjoy seeing the flood lmao
Playing this part first time: STARTS SHOOTING ALL THE FLOOD AROUND HIM IN PANIC
After cutscene: Ignores the Flood and dies
Underrated
27:40 the flood dud is always there
must be a glitch in the code
do you need the two marines with the fuel rod canon and spartan laser cause mine keep getting killed at the first tower
Im convinced that the Grave-mind had to Naruto Sprint to the Control Room in order to make that villainous entrance.
The Gravemind can telleport with its tentacles. That’s how it got the Chief to High Charity and the Arbiter to the Control Room in Halo 2.
Hokiebird428 I know that, I was just making a joke. Hey do you think he’d be willing to teleport us inside Area 51?
The best Halo mission of all time.
The most epic mission in Halo franchise !!
In the final battle with the Covenant inside the Citadel, the Grunts with Fuel Rods in the first room appear on any difficulty, the second pair and the Plasma Turret, only appear on Legendary.
Thx for uploading, you're a good strategist.
wow 117 comments now... oh wait, oops
Who thinks in halo master chief collection they should have redone the graphics like halo 2 graphics ?
+Tristan Fowler Wait till 2017.
Not like it needs it.
ServantOfPriss I doubt they're gonna do it.
At the end I just ran nonstop shooting fuel rod gun where required. Was quick and easy
Did anyone else think that the odst at 0:46 said were going on a little hike?
