To be a little fair with the person asking how many days are in a 17 hour drive, anyone who drives for 17 hour without stopping for a coffee break, a nap or going to the bathroom is either crazy or dumb. 5 hours should be the limit, afterwards you should at least stretch your legs. So, I would say that the 17 hour trip should take you a "healthy" day and a half. That being said there is no excuse about not knowing how many hours are in a day.

It never stops to amaze me how ignorant lots of people are about the world just outside their tiny personal bubble. That is not only the case for Americans but I am afraid for people all over the world. A long time ago we had a tv program about horror vacations. The presenter of the program visited people on holiday. He showed them a map of Europe and people were asked to point out where they were. Lots of them had no clue ... worse even, when asked to point our own country they also failed. This was fun watching with you. ~ Vals

The map thing is insane! Some countries definitely need a better education system!

Canadian here. Two big differences between the US & Canada: 1) The US was first colonised by religious groups who left Europe when it was becoming more secular during the Enlightenment; Canada was used by Britain as a place to send hard-working poor people. 2) Canada didn't become a country until the late 19th century and didn't fully separate until 1986. This means that all the social progression that happened in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries also happened here, while the US was on their own.
Also worth noting that Canada has long been used by liberal Americans as a back up. After the US War of Independence many British sympathisers moved to Canada. Before and during the US Civil War, many slaves were smuggled to Canada for freedom. As late as the Vietnam War in the 1970s people who were anti-war would flee to Canada to avoid the draft. For 200 years there has been a slow but steady migration of American liberals to Canada. Meanwhile, Canada and the US mutually allow dual citizenship, so when Canadians go to the US for work they always have the opportunity to return.
I think most people these days understand that there's a lot of politics tied up in US education, but what you may not know is that public schools are funded primarily using property taxes in a given district, not federal or even state taxes. This unfortunately means that areas that are already economically depressed can't afford to fund their schools while affluent areas often have public schools with more resources than private schools. A lot of these people have unfortunately never even had the opportunity to educate themselves.

Hello, thank you very much for your comment. I didn’t know that this is the reason why the two countries are so different. I also didn’t know know that schools were founded through property taxes, but it explains a lot. Thank you for teaching so many things!

Canada and USA were never 1 country. It was always 2 different countries. Canadians hate being compared to Americans.

DOncha know (sarcasm) that egpyt was invented for the movies. i used to live in america and i a British and yeah...how did we get. because canada is still part of the commenwealth, and america went its own way like a teenager who goes out and does a lot of things, when canada is a young adult that knows the world a bit better

Actually, my guess would be that the girl in that story was from a religion that takes the Bible literally and is generally against outside views. She's going to public school because her parents don't have the time or money to homeschool her, but she's been warned that most of what she's being taught is from the "false religion of science" or some such. She's probably just brainwashed, not dumb.
