    Really well constructed, slow burn folk horror narrative and so carefully told. The other women yelling with her when she's wailing isn't just a show of support, it's a way of drowning out the significance of her screams and conditioning her to not be alarmed by wails, to just experience them as sounds that you repeat back when you hear them.

    • @ALIENjoy
      @ALIENjoy Месяц назад +10

      Yes I don’t blame viewers for not understanding the horrifying implications of the cult upon first watch, but Dani NEEDED real support and healing. In the end, her friends were all murdered, her boyfriend is rapt and burned alive, and she was made complicit in all of it. She was such a tender and loving character. If you could ask Dani at the beginning of the film what she truly wanted, it wouldn’t be this. She was left just as ravaged as the family from Hereditary.

    I know the support looks cool but thats how communal cults work. As someone with hyper empathy disorder, i definitely found it attractive as well, but that just goes to show you how brilliant some cults are. Lots of people think they are too smart to be manipulated into joining a cult, but then you have cults like this, that dont worship an individual leader of the group, dont espouse to a complicated set of contradictory beliefs or motives, concepts that would otherwise be tip offs to the more intelligent individuals that this here is a cult in the sociological definition. This cult is structured more like an ancient, polytheistic religion, with the love spell and all that jazz being portrayed to the outsider as just art or storytelling. Just some traditions, some gods they believe in, regardless of actual worship, and of course the collective empathy, that would entice even the most intelligent of individuals who also happen to be highly empathetic and compassionate.
    The collective empathy is how the cult works to erase your individual identity, into the sea of the collective. Your feelings, the thing with which you identify most, are no longer your own. Everyone else shares them, carries the burden with you. You lose the main thing with which you idenfity and define yourself apart from the group. You believe that you are being supported, having your emotions validated, and even viscerally shared, and to an extent that is indeed what they are doing and they are doing it in part because they believe it's a positive thing. But they also do it because they know how the emotional human mind works. Hell, my dog recently died. Had to out her down last week because her kidneys failed. It's been extremely tough. I've had desires to start self harming again. I still needed her.. And i live in a place where i cant openly feel what i need to feel in order to move through this darkness. If i was brought to this group in my current state, i have no doubt they would be able to indoctrinate me 100%.

    As a Swede I love this film, but it IS more of a horror comedy for us. It's so well researched though, they got so many things right.
    The painting over Dani's bed is not just foreshadowing, the bear with the blonde girl, it's also made by very famous Swedish classical painter John Bauer.
    The rest of the aesthetics, the art, folk clothing, songs, are not exact copies but veery close to it.
    Ättestupa was mentioned in Viking stories, if someone grew old enough to be a burden, they could choose to end themselves by jumping off a cliff and still have an honourable death.
    Blood Eagle is also from Viking stories. They'd open the victim up over the back and pull the lungs out when they're still alive.
    The dance around the maypole is traditional but the dance until you drop comes from a folk song called Hårgalåten, in which the devil dresses as a fiddler and makes all the young dance until they die. It's also what gave name to the commune.
    There's a part of the film where they put a pair of scissors in the cot of a baby. This is due to the superstition that iron wards away fae folk, who would want to steal your baby.
    The girls walking backwards picking flowers, this is a thing we do on midsommar eve. It looks a little different in different parts of the country, but the idea is that you pick 7 different flowers and put them under your pillow, then you'll dream of who you will marry.
    Honestly, the least authentic part of the movie is the nature around the commune. Its not filmed in Sweden, and it shows.

    • @Lii170

    • @Lannisen
      @Lannisen Месяц назад +4

      @Lii170 I know, but it's still part of Swedish folklore. There's no evidence of it happening because how would you find evidence after 1000 years? This is in no way a realistic Swedish cult, its a folk horror film, but it is very well researched.

If the person receiving the punishment screamed during the ritual they wouldn't ascend to Valhalla (Valhall). During this scene I'm not really sure why they had him blood eagled! They've all seen this and do not understand WTAF was supposed to be going on.. since Even the non-sacrifice part is grossly exaggerated or mistaken.. I suppose one could chalk it up to some fringe wackos like in the move Wickerman with Nicholas Cage.

    There are very old traditons here in England that date back to Pagan times to do with sacrifices made to ensure a good harvest so people don't starve. It still goes on now with ceremonies like the crying of the neck but no humans or animals are used (officially any way). Cider is poured on the ground beneath an apple tree to ensure a good harvest of apples and corn dollies are made to ensure a good crop etc.

    Lots of yellow "tea" for sure. x)
    50:08 The pleasure too? They didn't had those scenes run in parallel for no reason. Like, let's not forget they literally planned to do this with her boyfriend, further drugged him up to do so, did not stop her from seeing the scene. It's a form of grooming her into the cult. That guy had her targeted right from the beginning, knowing about her family trauma, knowing about the issues with her boyfriend. Offering her psychoactive drugs in her state of mind was also very deliberate and very very wrong. And yes, her boyfriend was not great, but he neither deserved to die, nor can you really blame him for what he did on the compound, since he couldn't consent in his state of mind anyway.
    They btw. kinda laid out the whole story in the drawing in the beginning and what happens next in the drawings later on. Including why his "tea" was a little more reddish.

    At first, I thought they were being killed because they disrespected their culture, but it literally was guessed correctly around 8:00 about being human sacrifices. Dani was brought in as a new member because of her trauma, but always felt sorry for Christian myself, because while everybody says she should break up with him, he also wanted to do that anyway and suddenly couldn't because he'd be a bigger asshole if he did it after her family's tragedy.

    So not sure if it was an actual connection but there are many similarities between this and a ancient Viking festival called Upsalla where ever nine years they would celebrate for nine days and sacrifice nine each of various animals allegedly including humans.

    I've always enjoyed the themes of inclusion in this film. Our May queen Dani arrives in a state of openness and vulnerability looking for healing. She receives this from an entirely different culture, while she never receives the support she needed from her close friends and family. Given her relationship in (attempting) to care for her sister, Pelle's invitation speaks to his understanding of her at a deeper level, and her validity as a May queen candidate and sister to their commune. The others each arrive with selfish desires, in a way to capitalize on a culture they don't entirely understand. There's a lot to be said of opt-in and consent in this story as well, with how little context our main cast of characters are given throughout the celebration.

    A fine line between cult and culture.
    BTW, if y’all have not seen The Wicker Man (1973,) it’s a must.

    no fucking shit dani is trying to keep her boyfriend of 3 years after her whole entire family just died 🙄 do you expect her to just immediately throw away the only long term relationship she still has in her life? be serious. she seems desperate to keep him because she IS and that’s not what is pushing him away. he already wanted to break up with her for an entire year but was too scared to do it. don’t blame her for him being a coward.
