The easiest and most accurate way to determine if someone you know has scoliosis is with an image of their spine.
If there is no way to obtain an image, there will be a lot of variables that will determine if the scoliosis is visible or not.
The first variable is the size of the curve. Severe curves tend to be more noticeable. Curves over 25 degrees can be noticeable on the outside but will always depend on the patient's body type.
The curve location is another variable. A curve in the thoracic spine will always be easier to notice due to how it will affect rib symmetry. Especially when the patient bends forward, it will be very noticeable with a thoracic scoliosis. A lumbar scoliosis is hard to notice. It only affects the symmetry of the waist and can be hidden easier by certain body types and clothes.
The age of the patient is also a variable. As patients age and mature, their body changes, making it harder to notice until they've entered a later stage of scoliosis over 55 and 60 degrees of curve progression.
Lastly, the type of scoliosis is another variable. This one is linked directly to the severity of scoliosis. Someone with congenital scoliosis, for example, will often be more severe, so it will be easier to notice. Now, someone with idiopathic scoliosis, the most common form of scoliosis, will not be as easy to diagnose in plain sight. And small curves will often go undiagnosed because they are not usually visible.
The sizes of the curve can be classified in:
    Mild - under 25 degrees
    Moderate - 25 to 45 degrees
    Severe - 45 to 60 degrees
Very severe - 60 degrees or more
On the mild stage, most curves are barely noticeable. In the next stage, moderate scoliosis, curves are more noticeable, but in some cases, there is a balance on the scoliosis that makes it harder to detect in plain sight.
In the next stage, severe scoliosis is more noticeable, but there might still be some body types and curve angle locations that might conceal the degree of scoliosis for some patients.
Now, in patients with very severe scoliosis, there are many noticeable factors in their body, their posture, and more that make it obvious the patient has scoliosis due to the size of their curve.
The most common sign of scoliosis in children and adolescents is posture. Such as asymmetrical shoulders, hips, neck.
In adults, is pain, often a dull ache and certain difficulty with certain positions, and increased pain when sleeping.
If you observe any posture changes in yourself or others around you, or you feel pain that resonates with scoliosis, the best thing to do is get evaluated as soon as possible. The sooner a diagnosis is made, the sooner the scoliosis can be treated, reduced, and control its progression.

Hello! Just came up on my feed about pain during menstruation or dysmenorhea is related to scoliosis. Is that true? Because I have been having dysmenorhea ever since, even before the diagnosis of my scoliosis. Would really appreciate your answer. God bless!

Am 68 had pain in upper back for several years within past year started waking at night with hips hurting. Dr did x rays discovered I have scoliosis and degenerative spondylosis of thoracic spine. Was given a pill for bone to take once a week.
I mostly have a stinging pain between my shoulder blades. Are there exercises to help this, is there a brace that I could purchase to help and do you know of a place like yours in Texas. Also would chiropractic treatments help.
