- Although the 2004 Reunion Tour wasn't all too bright, there were a few moments that shined some like this one right here. A great father/son moment on stage.

Wolfgang literally saved Ed’s life. He was a major factor in Ed getting clean and sober finally. Hopefully this time it’s for good. Thanks for saving your old man, Wolf!

When I became a father something fundamental changed in me. It didn't mean I became a better person but the first time I held my daughter I could feel something had changed deep inside. I don't think that happens to everybody but I can tell it's what happened to Eddie. The love he has for Wolf just shines and they are/were very lucky to have that bond. It's beautiful to see and takes me back. Tearing up now, gotta go.

A couple of ways to look at this performance now given that Eddie is gone. At that point, Ed was a train wreck on so many levels. 2004 was a really low point regarding his health and his ability to play the instrument. It was all a painful mess. The upside is that he was able to remarry, move on with his life, make a huge comeback, have a couple of successful tours, a great studio album, reconcile with Dave, produce a solid live cd and appear live on Kimmel. It really was a great comeback. So long, Eddie. Thanks for the memories and the music.

Very nice. I will always stand by my thought that even with all his demons at that time - he always loved his son and Valerie. I even believe he still had love and respect for Sam and Michael as well. I was glad to see him clean up and have another moment in the sun so to speak.

Eddies hands remind me of an old fishermans hands.He has repaired his nets so many times he can watch the sea and his hands know to work by just the feel.Im not sure we will ever know a musician who could play with such "effortless perfection." RIP Eddie.

cheapseats12 well, Sammy said that Eddie went crazy & broke a bunch o shit & started yelling and that Wolfie was in his dressing room crying, terrified of his Dad, so I’d say he knows.
To have someone you can share your passion and love whether it would be a friend, wife, husband, parent, or in this case your child is truly a amazing thing. You can tell Eddie loved sharing his passion for music with the people he loved and cared about. Rest easy Eddie.
Most of us look back on fishing or a first beer with our dads.... Wolfie got to play with a Legend in front of thousands. God bless you Eddie, for everything you've given us. Thank you and rest in peace.

I was at this show. it was unforgettable. And Wolf playing 316 with him, was something.
I remember the mess Eddie was in for this tour, it was hard to watch him in such shape. I was waiting to hear the bad news back then, but I believe his son saved his life. It’s heart wrenching to lose Eddie, especially for his family. But Eddie cleaned up for his son I believe. To get to witness the difference in Eddie up until 2015 was a blessing and I’m thankful that Wolfgang got to have what he did with his Dad. The incredible part is just how good Wolfgang really is. Imagine the pride Eddie must have felt. Good grief it’s hard to believe he’s really gone. My thoughts and prayers will continue to be with Wolf, Al, Eddies wife Janie, and Valerie. Thanks for changing rock guitar forever Eddie, you are forever the GOAT.

Very nicely worded. Even with Eddies demons - you could tell he always loved his Son and Valerie. What’s amazing is that I knew I heard this song since 86. Then it came out on Carnal Knowledge as 316. Never knew the name of it until then. It’s Wolfs birthdate. Eddie never gave the track a name until he was born.

After almost thirteen years posting this, I feel that I should share a few words.
Pressure lays upon thus grace, crushing stability for yet today. Giveth pain amongst the masses…there might ever be any resolution.
And as we hear, see and wish upon our fallen, we only share the light to what was hidden by their darkness.
As so here we are, another year without a king, may we all wish him eternal peace. For where we might stand a century somehow, we can only let his legacy carry us from now.

This is every guitar playing fathers dream. To be able to play live with their son and pass on a legacy. I just found this video a day after Fathers Day but I bet this is all Eddie needs to make his perfect. He must be super proud. This was very touching as well. Father and son doing it the right way as no other could.

What is beautiful about this is that this is the song Eddie played to Wolfie when Valerie was pregnant with him. To have a young Wolfie him his dad playing this brings a tear to the eye

My prayers for Eddie to be in the better place he should be and for Wolfgang and the family for their loss. Just know that Eddie is in a better place with no pain. We on earth are sad he is no longer with us. It is hard to feel it but try and have some happy thoughts he with God and many others and will always be here in his music he gave to the world. I totally agree with you. He is in a better place. He was corrupted as a very young child into drinking and smoking and that, by no means was his fault, but rather the fault of hideous parenting by his "parents." God shields children and the sick and Eddie was saddled with a lot of baggage from his youth and obvious anxietys and stresses and addictions. He's definitely up there, hand-picked to be in Gods best band and showing all the angels "how it's done." I firmly believe this!
And, kudos to his wife Janie. It sounds like she had no problem with Valerie and by letting them be at his side as he passed, that speaks volumes for the class of both wives, current and ex.
@@alisonb9963 Every action we choose, bad parenting or not. Just saying. Making excuses for a person doesn't show love. Addiction is a real disease but it still starts with a choice. People are people and bad choices don't always come from bad people. At the same time there are folks who have dealt with the worst things imaginable and still make consistent good choices. Why?
Because those around them showed them real love instead of doing the easy thing which is making excuses.
That was probably the best moment in the entire 2004 tour.

Notice the look mixed between being tired, hot, and the amount of pride being up there with his son doing his life’s work up on stage with his now grown up son. Had to be one of the greatest moments of his life! And you can see on his face how truly happy he really was!!
WOW, EVH is one of my favorite guitarists, but it breaks my heart to see him like this, especially in front of Wolfie! So glad that he found the strength to get sober. I hope he can eventually quit vaping too. His family and friends want the almighty guitar genius Edward around as long as possible.

Eddie, his brother Alex and father Jan all worked at the Masonic Temple in Pasadena where they became more into the occult. Eddie started drinking at 12 years old! What father allows that? Eddie would steal light fixtures off houses and places of business to use in his gigs. Eddie and Alex were not born in America so they were technically illegal immigrants. When Eddie was 16 he got a girl pregnant and had no problem with her getting an abortion. His “career” was too important. Look at Van Halen’s album covers especially on 1984 and Balance. On 1984 there is a baby smoking and there is some weird picture of two kids split in half on Balance. Wicked! That’s some weird stuff. Epic, a father and son sharing quality time together. It just happens to be in front of alot of people and the guitarist happened to be one of the worlds best and beloved. Eddie's gratitude for the applause when he first sits, real heartfelt emotion. RIP

A lot of people were really coming down on Eddie for kicking Michael Anthony out of the band, but now considering Eddies passing it was real blessing for the two of them to have made these memories...
Omg, right? There is NO QUESTION that Wolfgang was the love of his parents lives! I've never seen someone smile w/so much love in their heart as when u see Eddie smiling @ his son. That boy was loved from conception until the day his dad passed. The downfall to that is that poor Wolfgang & Valery & Lesley (Eddie's current wife,) r going to forever have a big piece of their heart missing!
And the rabid fans who have been insulting Wolfie & Valery, acting like Eddie is their property because they have been VH fans. Eddie was someones husband and father. He is not public property! Plus, it is pretty amazing that Eddie & both of his wives managed to keep their son & their personal life out of the tabloids 4 the most part.
Family is #1. But, as VH fans, we will never hear another guitar solo that sounds like EVH! (Althougg, I am looking forward to Wolfgang's solo album!)
I can see the mixed comments on this video. Watching this video had a few differing but equally profound emotional impacts for many reasons.
When I first saw it years ago, I was so angry. It brought up so many scars that were just below the surface. I’m a musician son of an alcoholic musician father who died at 50 and a former addict myself. Originally, Seeing young Wolfie love his dad so unconditionally while Eddie pissed that childs time and love away made me angry and brought up so many feelings of loving my dad and feeling abandoned while he destroyed himself and let it take him away from us. Like EVH he was a very talented man whose demons from childhood drove his addictions. Like Eddie, he was also a loving Dad who adored his sons and passed on the music gene to us. But even without judging, I could not watch this video for the longest time. When I watched it again a few years later I was able to see a struggling, hurting man whose love for his child even after losing his family, may have been the only thing that kept him alive.
It hurt to see his heart ache while simultaneously destroying all that was good around him. And to hear him stammer his love incoherently for Wolfie reminded me so much of my dads drunken shows of loving affection. Because when your that wasted, emotions just pour out for better or for worse.
But in recent years after his amazing recovery and sobriety and prior to his death, I have been reminded of how love, true love will provide chances for redemption. This was the beginning of an eventual happy but bittersweet ending for the Van Halen family.
Yes he was taken too soon but his heart was whole again. His family restored and friendships mended. So now when I see this I’m reminded of how lucky I am that I got clean before my kids were old enough to see what I mess I had become. And I’m reminded of how true love can bring you back from the brink of destruction. Death is not the end of EVH. People like EVH transcend time. See... even now he’s very much a part our life.
Brought me to tears. I lost my Dad and we were close. Can only imagine how thrilled they both were in this moment.
Same. My dad used to have a band in the 70s. In 2010 he did some shows with a friends band singing again and just one show he wanted me to go up and perform with him so I did. We did two Santana covers. Was the coolest moment I shared with my dad. I’ll always remember that now since he passed 4 years ago
