For all of you that are having trouble using the show-offs.... I found out that not all the sizes are the same thickness. I bought a 12 pack of 8x10 and couldn't get them to cut even after 4 double passes. Then I read a review online here: shop.hobbylobby.com/products/8-x-10-stencil-blanks-147215/ that indicates the thicknesses are different based on the product size. The reviewer says you have to get the 12x12 sheets in order to cut them on Cameo. I hope that helps.
this was a great video thanks i just began my journey with mixed media a I also just purchased the curio and the cameo so glad to see how that stencil turned out! To be honest that stencil looks way better than the ones you buy in the stores. Thanks
You are right about every machine is different. I use my stencil material with setting on temporary tattoo with .005 and .007 mylar using my own setting; 3, 25 and blade at 1. I have been making stencils for 8 years with a Silhouette and before that with an electric tool. Thanks for sharing your info!
This was a very helpful video. I just got a Portrait, primarily for stenicl cutting as I do gelli printing and mixed media. Thank you so much for making an easy to understand video!
Hey! I have yet to work with the new software update. But I am going to do some cutting next week, I will then update you all with the settings that are best used. Hugs!!
Hi Great Tutorial. I have a quick question...I was wondering how often you have to replace your blade? I just got my cameo and I'm primarily going to be using it for plastic stencil sheets. The blade looks to tiny and delicate i'm worried i'll have to replace it after i do one intricate 12x12 so it would be good to know how much use i can get out of a blade before i have to replace it. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I'm addicted to Gelli printing, but the price on some of the stencils I want are ridiculous compared to cutting my own. I just bought the Cameo, so now I don't have to cut stencils by hand anymore.
if you aren't near a hobby lobby, Walmart sells a plastic (?) file divider (brand name Avery) that cuts easily and stands up to to lacquer thinner and other solvents when used to airbrush. I have to double and sometimes triple cut, but the detail is excellent!!
Hi Jamie i have recently receive a Silhouette Cameo and i tried to cut a stencil juste like the one you have in this video. But my Silhouette Cameo don't want to cut the stencil sheet. Can you help me plz, sorry for my english i do my best. Thank you!
Hi Jamie, Unfortunately I've had the same issue with the Show Offs from Hobby Lobby not cutting through. Can't tell you how many pieces are in the garbage after trying many difference settings, including the ones you use. I don't have the newest version of the software but my cut settings are what you suggested and I had a new blade in the machine. Transparencies work fine but are much thinner and probably won't last as long.
I've been using my S for the same thing. as a matter of fact, my mat is covered with the tiny cut out pieces. The worst part of the whole process, getting them off. But I need another stencil.
Jamie you have saved me $100s of dollars in doing this. I wanted feathers, a specific alpha and then some little grunge things. I love them and thank you so much. I've had a blast making these. However I have googled, googled and googled some more to find the stencil that you are cutting in this video and I have not had any luck. Can you point me in the right direction.
I have a question. I am yet to use my Silhouette Cameo myself. I bought it to make my own stencils, but so far the only thing I see are designs. I want to make my own quotes and letters on a stencil but not vinyl letters. Did I buy the wrong machine?
I tried to cut clear acetate i had so many issues i been looking for someone to tell me the settings once i get the new craft room together THIS IS A MUST try thanks
Jamie, using show offs stencil material just like you showed. Using the chipboard setting, speed 5, thickness 33, blade 10, double cut but it will not go all the way through. I see others are having the same problems. Is there something else we can try?
Hi! Thanks so much for the video. I'm having trouble with mine though. I am using the same "Show Offs" stencil material that you are using. I have the settings the same (blade at 10, speed at 5, thickness at 33, double cut), but it is still not cutting all the way through. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!
+Whitney Crawford In another video I saw that someone said they cut it again after it went through once. I dont have a cameo, I am trying to decide whether or not to purchase one, I barely know anything about them and how they work but maybe you can try that. They also used Avery brand plastic dividers, which are meant to separate folders, not made for stencils. and did not use the show offs. I am not sure they used the same settings. The title of the video is Making stencils with Silhouette Cameo
Do you think this same process would work with the portrait? I do not own any silhouette, but I'm thinking about it, the portrait is obviously less expensive so I would want to start there. Thanks!
Jamie, thanks. I had tried several different kinds of stencil materials, none of which worked, when I saw your video. The Show Offs work better than anything else! The only thing I am still trying to figure out is the thin plastic coating on one side. I have noticed that on intricate cuts it starts to come up. It's not a big deal, I just rip the entire thing off. I am still trying to figure out if the coated side should be up or down when I cut. Thanks again for the information. I was just about ready to throw the Cameo in the trash!
@@jccreatives9619 I have found the autoblade that comes with the Cameo 4 is not strong enough to cut all the way through Mylar like this. I have ordered the kraft blade for it which is designed to cut thicker material, and can be used in carriage #2 on the cameo. Carriage #2 can apply much more pressure than carriage #1. Hope that helps.
You can find a video on how to convert these images to become cut table files in my actual channel if you seen this video just click on my name is she taking writes my channel. thanks!
I am looking for someone to cut out stencils for my church project to use throughout the church. I cannot find the 5 words I need anywhere. I would do freehand but I need a professional script look. Please help.
You put the stencil material with the backing down, right? Just curious, I read further down (in comments), and you said "either side" works. Well, that confused me a bit. Wouldn't I want the "top side" to be the image, not the reverse, mirror image? Can you elaborate? Plus, I was grateful for the "blade depth" tip. I tend to follow the Cameo instructions, then have a mini-fit over it NOT turning out! Yeah, I just HATE wasting material, time, and blade usage, also~ LOL. However, I have "learned" to do a "test run" now, it saves me the frustration! Otherwise it looks easy, thanks for sharing!
Hi Anna! The best part about stencils is that it works either backwards or forwards! Either side you cut on, all you have to do it flip the stencil over once it is cut, and it will be the right way! Hope that helps!
I know with the Cameo the you can only cut 12" wide but how long of a stencil will it cut? Also did I understand you correctly that I can import image off the internet into their software and cut stencils?
what blade depth? you said 5 and then 10 so i wasn't sure what you meant. :) hoping to make my first stencil today! and can i use gesso instead of texture gel? or is texture gel thicker? i'm having trouble with my gesso bleeding under the stencil.
Jamie: I want to learn how to create stencils to ultimately use them for creating subway art as a business and possibly create and sell stencils from the designs I make. I only yesterday came across Silhouette Cameo through another blog I receive, so I am not even familiar with all the possibilities. I am continuing to do research (even as I send this message), which can be rather time consuming when you don't know how to begin your searches. Are you familiar with any sites that might cover this topic, or do you cover creating stencils for subway art?
Well there are thousands of free images on the internet but I would suggest a disclaimer asking that people be sure they are using non copyrighted images.I have found little internet stores charging upwards of $20 for the same images that are available for free.
Hola!,podrías decirme qué tipo de material estas usando para hacer los stencils?,Mylar o similar?.Podrías fijarte en el paquete que mostraste en el video? Muchas gracias!!.Muy bueno el video tutorial.
can you do more than 1 stencil at a time. I need to find something that will cut several stencils such as Herrin Reunion 2014, can the sihouette cameo do it?
Jamie, hi. I want to learn how to cut stencils with cameo silhouette BUT a reverse stencil. I ONLY want to cut the outside lines.Example: Easter egg with dots and chevrons in the egg. I want to cut the outside of the egg and the outside edges of the dots and chevron patterns. Like a coloring book page. The only thing that would be painted would make it look like a coloring book page. Please help me. Thank you
I have tried the Show Off brand stencil from Hobby Lobby and am unable to get it to cut on my Cameo. I am following your directions. You did not mention which side you laid down on the mat to cut... is the shiny side of the stencil up, or the dull side? Maybe that makes a difference.
I found that shiny side being up was worked sometimes and it being down worked sometimes. It's kinda weird. The shiny side though is a thin film that seems to come off when it's placed face down. So when I cut using shiny side down, and then I am weeding the design out, a whole film comes off. I would try it with shiny side up and see. I had trouble getting them to work a few times but setting blade at 6-7 (double cut), speed down to 2 (or 1 for very intricate stuff) made my stencils cut clean. I wish Showoff made those without the film....PS: The 6x9 stencils work much better than the 9x18 ones I found. Same brand but diff thickness imho...I had this issue.
Love this! Going to Hobby Lobby this weekend and will pick some of these stencil blanks up to try it out. Now if I could just get my mat to load in my Cameo after the update, that would be a whole other story! Do you have the link to the image you found on Google that you made the stencil of in this tutorial? I have searched high and low using the description you stated and I cannot find it. Thanks so much and I cannot wait to check out your other videos :)
Hi Jamie - I'm kind of a Newbie (grandma) just retired and I'm trying to find the best machine to cut out 'Stencils'. Is your machine called a Silhouette Cameo? I tried going on Google to look for designs - but when it comes up, it asks where I want to save them - then I'm lost! could you help me on this please? I love your video's, Jamie. You take the time to explain and do beautiful work. Thanks for your time.
+Maeve Garcia the machine she has is the silhouette cameo and it does great job cutting stencils. when you find images you want to save you click on save image as and create a folder (name it) and hit save. it will put the image in that folder and you can go into it anytime you want. in silhouette you would go into open file and search for the folder you saved the image in.
I tried to cut a similar stencil, with rectangles. My machine cut out each individual line, leaving me with small pieces to peel off my mat and no stencil. How did you tell your machine to cut the negative spaces between your circles, rather than cutting the positive image??
Hi Judi! You are able to weld your image! Search how to weld images on the cameo software. EXTREMELY easy to do, just one button! It is located on the top right "toolbox" and has a "w" in a grey box. Hope that helps!
Question for you i do stencil graffiti but it takes time cutting out im looking at buying something to help cut this time out, but my problem is i cant find one that would cut up to the scale of A1/A2 is there not one that can cut up to this size? thats if you would know
Based on my experience: You can resize your image once you are in the software (be sure you get the Designer version for the Cameo). I cut fabric and the largest to date I have cut is 11" by 17". You must also by a carrier mat that is large enough (a 12x12 comes with the machine. The Cricut brand mats are often less expensive and work just fine. I have two 12x24 mats. Be sure you align you stencil material, fabric, or whatever else you use OVER the gray toned borders of the Cricut mat so the paper is aligned properly once the cutting starts.
Please help me Jamie! I have the same stencil blanks and used your exact settings and this Cameo WILL NOT cut all the way through. My blade is set to 10. Im feeling hopeless.. I need this thing to work. I have no idea what Im doing wrong. I sent back my first Cameo because I thought I had a dud but the new one is not cutting either.
Hi Angela, I am not sure how many ppl know this but sometimes small bits of paper get stuck in the small hole of the cutter blade. and this will prevent the blade from protruding the correct distance, My wife bought about 6 thinking the blade had gone blunt. then ask me to see what was wrong . cleared all paper from hole now works properly again.
Hi Jamie, I am an artist and want to create my own stencil designs instead of buying them or getting them off the internet. Can one create ones own stencil art in Adobe Illustrator and then make a file that the stencil machine can recognize?
Oh hi Jamie, I love this video…so I went out and bought some stencil blanks just like the one's you are using. I set my thickness to 33, blade depth was on 10, and it was on double cut….everything seemed like it was going well but when it was done…it wasn't even cut all the way through :( It was even a new blade! Can you help me please. Thank you for such a great video! Tracy
I am still using show-offs, and they work perfectly :) You have to make sure to set your software to "Stencil" They changed it with the new update. The blade has to be at 10, and sometimes it takes a couple cuts to go all the way through. Good Luck!

Oh my gosh what a waste. I've bought a pack and have tried twice. Hobby lobby doesn't take things back if it didn't work for me right?

Super detailed stencil but I want to know how to get the super detailed cut lines.
Enjoy watching your video :)

Would I be able to use 0.10mm transparent mylar (used on overhead projectors) on the cameo ...
This is did not work for me. ;( Used the same material and settings. Did you have to cut it more than once? I used the double cut feature.

Hi Angela, I am not sure how many ppl know this but sometimes small bits of paper get stuck in the small hole of the cutter blade. and this will prevent the blade from protruding the correct distance, My wife bought about 6 thinking the blade had gone blunt. then ask me to see what was wrong . cleared all paper from hole now works properly again.
hi I set everything on what you said and it didn't cut thru . did it twice. I have the newest cameo
Did you get it figured out? We have the newer cameo and are trying to figure out stencils too
great video thank you
thanks ! great info
I have seen people with very large designs. What is the largest stencil you can create?
12x12 is the largest I've had luck with!
Are you able to create a template in Word and then link to this program?
Cant find the image you used, please if anyone can help me?
what stilluetprogramm you use?
Hi Jamie, I am an artist and want to create my own stencil designs instead of buying them or getting them off the internet. Can one create ones own stencil art in Adobe Illustrator and then make a file that the stencil machine can recognize?
david shultis Yes! Absolutely! You would just need to import the image into the Studio and have fun!
What is the icon called that it is on googel
Oh hi Jamie, I love this video…so I went out and bought some stencil blanks just like the one's you are using. I set my thickness to 33, blade depth was on 10, and it was on double cut….everything seemed like it was going well but when it was done…it wasn't even cut all the way through :( It was even a new blade! Can you help me please. Thank you for such a great video! Tracy
The same here, it didn't cut all the way through, brand new blade too :(
I am still using show-offs, and they work perfectly :) You have to make sure to set your software to "Stencil" They changed it with the new update. The blade has to be at 10, and sometimes it takes a couple cuts to go all the way through. Good Luck!

Buy the ones from Wal Mart they are smaller but if you are cutting them down it won't matter and they are thin enough to go through.
