6:00 Hydra Broodmaster can't make three 2/2s! (X)(X) explained: Choose a value for X, then pay that value twice. Hydra Broodmaster: I choose to get five 5/5 tokens, that will cost me (5)(5)(G).

In 2021, this deck is not very budget friendly. Utopia sprawl is around 11 USD each, and a play set will run you around 44 bucks. The other massive price is Kalonian Hydra almost twenty usd each. A play set is close to 76 bucks. Some substitutes for these cards that can tide you over until you can get your hands on them are fertile grounds. For one colourless and a green, “enchant land, whenever enchanted land is tapped for mana, it’s controller adds and additional one mana of any colour” so basically it does what we need to get infinite mana but it’s a 2 mana card. You can’t really substitute anything for Kalonian Hydra, my recommendation would be just throw a play set of Verdurous Gearhulks in there until you get the Kalonian hydra. Hope this helps, this deck is sick and I hope you have fun!
I love this deck! I actually bought everything to make this deck as soon as I watched this! That was when you first made this video years ago. Since then I have modified this deck into 3 different versions and they are by far my top favorite decks to play! Green has sooo much more than raw power…. It also has the power of misdirection! Thank you for your content!!!!
The guy has a soothing radio animator voice, he explains very well the strategy of the deck, going along all the card and checking them with us, I loved the strategy involved; bravo!
6 mana, but the effect was X X (G) mana, so if you have 6 (G) you pay 3 / 2 / (G) = 6 mana . He was right. What you mean is him paying 7 mana to pay 3 / 3 / (G) = 7 mana
He is correct, you pay the same number for each X. So if X is 4, you pay (4)(4)(G) and then get 4 4/4 Hydras. You cannot pay diff mana costs for each X.
And just so we are clear he pays the green mana needed to play n each x gets paid separately so he pays 3 mana into each x plus the green needed for the spell as well. Resulting in 3 tokens that are 3/3 each if I'm not mistaken.
Definitely incorporate some protection for your creature kill so it doesn't die to removal at least as sideboard options against bad match ups that run a lot of removal. Examples: Vines of Vastwood ($1 each) & Blossoming Defense (50 cents each). Also I'd suggest replacing the Naturalizes in the sideboard with Nature's Claim (they're like 25 cents a piece so still budget and your ginormous creature will scoff at the tiny amount of life gain you gave them). An upgrade to this deck would be Walking Ballista so you don't have to rely on combat to kill your opponent (currently around $10 each, but will likely fall some when the new Ravnica set hits because it rotates out of the standard format). However, you could run Goblin Cannon instead of Walking Ballista as a non-combat method of spending infinite green mana to kill your opponent. All it requires is for you to hold priority after you activate it and then pay to activate it again, then repeat that process to put as many activations as you want onto the stack then as they resolve it gets sacrificed and then rest of the triggers don't care if it isn't there to be sacrificed.
5:52 no. 3 3/3 will enter the battlefiel than 6:05 no. The effekt of colonian hydra do not effekt the tokens becorse they does not have got any +1/+1 counters on it. in stead they are x/x. So they doesn‘t get x +x/+x counters
Hmm. The interaction between Kalonian Hydra and Hydra Broodmaster doesn't quite work like that. Kalonina doubles the counters, and while that does work on the broodmaster itself, the tokens it creates don't have any counters on them. They are X/X not 0/0 with X +1/+1 counters.
Its also just wrong lol, there are effects that target islands and that are effected by the amount of islands you have, as well as blue lands that produce blue mana that aren't islands, and other cards which can produce blue mana that aren't even lands at all.
@@gogogo123454321 If you don't have the brain capacity to understand what he means by "Forests and islands", then you probably don't have a high enough brain capacity to play magic.
My coworkers and I used to play a ton during the Innistrad Block. 2 cards I think might be cool techs for this deck from around then are Predator Ooze and Increasing Savagery. In case you haven't heard of them Predator Ooze is a 1/1 for 3 Forest and it's Indestructible with "It gets a +1/+1 counter each time it attacks" and "if target creature is destroyed by Predator Ooze put a +1/+1 counter on Predator Ooze." And Increasing Savagery is a 2 Forests and 2 sorcery and it has; put 5 +1/+1 counters on target creature. Flashback 5 and 2 Forests. If cast from the graveyard put 10 +1/+1 counters on creature instead.
I know I know this is a budget deck but yeah, people should try this with a bunch of cantrips and turn it into a real combo deck. I wonder if Zhur-Taa Druid and orochi would work in this shell. Okay let's feed the wolves even more... fetchlands and forest/shocklands would give you access to thoughtsieze and/or red/blue spells. Blossoming defense protects your pieces. If you're willing to fight and your deck goes infinite mana you could benefit from the miracle spell Bonfire. First planeswalkers coming to my mind are Simic x Nissa, First Garruk and Saheeli. I the x hydra with protection from blue and haste must be the best hydra, getting rid of the rest would be the primary step.
at 11:03 i believe wed only have 2 cuz we used the 4 so wed start all over. im a bit confused lol unless hes counting the one already tapped on the field.
Karametras acolyte is a great card I haven’t heard of before. I have a green devotion deck that’s all about adding an obscene amount of mana to your mana pool and spending it on card effects and dumping huge spells onto the battlefield. I normally use Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx to add green mana equal to my devotion but with this card too, that’s gonna get insane
Hahaha I already have that combination in my hydra deck😂😂 never knew it could do that 😂 I can also pop put thousands of tokens, make them all have thousands of attack and defence. Make them all hexproof with trample. Gain thousands of life. And so one. It's pretty beast and the only way to really stop it is with flyers if you can get enough to kill me before everything is outrageous, which usually I do by turn 5. Or board wipe. But that works best if its exile because of a 2 drop instant that gives them all indestructible. Usually I win by turn 7 to 10. But now that I know that combo, I might be able to make that a tad bit quicker
Can also use any blue spell that makes them draw and draw out deck. Since it's infinite mana. Stroke of genius etc. Just some alternate kill to a creature in case.
ok this just made that red/green hydra i made look ridiculously slow, comparatively. This is insane! that blue card was in the kamigawa block if i'm not mistaken. I'm not too familiar with that set. I mostly just know about the spirits and pretty sure the ninjas are from there too. Infinite mana turn 2 without using artifacts is impressive. Props to the guy who came up with that.
the deck is fairly decent even without a 100%combo. i like that. i like the possibility of those combos but i hate it when the deck cant win without it. good job on this
I really love your deck techs Joey^^ i build most of them. Me and my friends play like kitchen table magic and share our decks while playing so we not rock hard on what is legal in modern or not as long as it's fair. I made this deck but i added 2 primordial hydra in the deck and its a lot of fun to play. Keep up the good content. You are by far my favorit youtuber with mtg and u inspired so many of my decks through deck techs both in paper and on arena. /Henrik
I love Hydra decks! That looks absolutely nasty. I tell my roommates about the deck techs and get so many eye rolls lol. Ever thought about doing a hydra tribal commander deck? Got the idea when I saw Polukranos but you could use Progenitus as the commander so you have more color variety. Anyway, sweet deck. On another note, I managed to pull a Nicol Bolas, the Ravager yesterday. Bought my girlfriend and myself a blister pack each on a whim and I pulled him and was freaking out on the way home lol. PLA
I just got done building a less budget friendly version of this... Im using nylea, goddess of the hunt and walking balista as my win conditions, might actually add 1 mistcutter main and probably another 1 or 2 sideboard. Love the budget jenk-tascticness you've got going on here, this is was MTG is really about.
What about a turn 3 black card that destroys the hydra?? or a turn 1 shock to kill your elf? there is also a white spell that makes the hydra unable to attack and defend. This combo is quiet easily counter-able
I'm glad I found your channel you are the first channel I've watched really ever because I never found a reason before to go on RUclips. I was able to get two of your budget decks for reasonable price not too much more than u did but just put this one in my cart at SCG and came out to 88.88 which Is a shame because I dont want to spend that much right now but it's an amazing deck. You should make a new budget deck video
Imagine this: the deck you are up against is black/White and got the first turn. Oppenent got plains and swamp untapped. So, when you are totally certain to just shake hands, the opponent throws down Swords to Plowshares, Dark Ritual and False Cure! BAM! 😂 I also found it ironic that the first card in your sideboard, Fog, could also protect against this. And then a lot of black cheap removal could end it. However, against most decks it would be a win of course! 😁 Awesome combo though, endless possibilities with endless green mana. You could also just go for Stream of life and get endless life. For drawn out games, you can choose other colors for the lands you enchant. I would include fireballs and such spells instead of the other fancy hydras, would be a lot cheaper to buy I think. It all depends on what you're up against.
I may be wrong but wouldnt you be an island mana short because on freed from the real it has a mana cost to tap enchanted creature... and since enchantments are a constant shouldnt you have to pay that regardless?
Edit: Missed the Haste. Walking Ballista could be used as well as a turn 2 kill, but it is more expensive. Also, add Duskwatcher Recruiter to pull any number of creatures from your library to your hand (ie your walking Ballista.) To be honest, you can do infinite green mana with Vizier of Remedies and Devoted Druid. Same concept, only 2 cards needed for infinite with no Forest requirement. A lot more expensive since it is better.
I know I'm just being pedantic. But, attached cards (such as auras and equipment) do not tap when their attached permanent taps. Copperhoof Vorrac and Flowstone Embrace are two good examples that show why your auras & equipment do not tap since they themselves can have or gain tap abilities. (Look at Clock of Omens) This is why I always put my enchantments behind the card they're enchanting. Makes it easier to manipulate the card that's actually tapping.
Came here for this. Also, is corner case relevant, as some things only destroy/exile other permanents that are tapped. (There are no spells, however, that destroy a tapped enchantment that I could discover.)
10:24 is wrong it would be 3 mana, not 4 because one is already tapped. This would take another turn to complete. Also, it would take another turn after that one because when you create a new blue mana, it is tapped because you use it to make another one. Therefore on turn 3 you will only have 3 or 4 mana max, but the turn after that is infinite.
I might be misunderstanding Freed, but when you cast it you have 2 green and 2 blue mana. Casting leaves you with 1 blue which you use to untap the elf. Would you not then need another blue mana to tap the elf again?
I actually have a RUG version of this deck that is based around hydras. But it is quite expensive but it wins alot of the time by turn 4. Blue for control/ midrange matchups. And sideboard and main both run 2 flings for consistency purposes. Its only expensive because of the mana base which most players who plah hardcore have this so they sre not limited to certain decks such as myself. As i love to play different decks. I traded a playset of lilis to get all 40 shocklands and 2 playsets of fetches value of 700 at the time lili was worth 600 for a set. The deck also runs metamorphosis for mana fixing and also thins my deck to get threats.
He's incorrect on the hydra broodmaster for a few reasons. The one I dont see people mentioning is that those tokens don't spawn with +1+1 counters, so it doesn't combo with the other card. They simply spawn as x,x's...
Made a few changes to the deck, i think this might be a little better and offer's a little more protection. 18 forest 4 Wooded Foothills 4 llanowar elves 4 arbor elf 4 utopia sprawl 2 courser of kruphix 3 karametra's acolyte 2 scourge of skola vale 4 kalonian hydra 2 hydra broodmaster 4 mistcutter hydra 2 genesis hydra 3 rancor 4 freed from the real 2 Apostle's Blessing 2 Blossoming Defense
Please correct me if I’m wrong, I would love to know. However, I think that “Freed from the Real” would not be able to untap the land, due to the wording of the card. It said untap enchanted creature. I would love to know what is everyone’s thoughts!
Vastwood Hydra. Sacrifice distribute counters there were on it to creatures you control. A $1-1.20 card that would go well with the Hydra that sacs creatures and gains counters equal to it's toughness.
This looks like fun in a five way sword and shield game. Obviously one guy is totally screwed when you pulled it off, but thinking about everyone scrambling to get rid of it is hilarious.
this is an infinite mana combo (and there are ones that run less cards to pull it) so basically you can get this "insta win" with any creature/spell tha t can deal damage to your enemy
Never realized kalonian hydra doubles the counters on EACH creature, i always played it as he doubled his own counters. Good to know, and thanks for the interesting deck. The odds of getting the combo are quite slim with the reliance on utopia sprawl but when it does work it is pretty amazing, even if you get it late game!
Polkranos is my favorite hydra card as far as art goes and the ability is pretty sweet, forever loving golgari synergies whether you're running life gain, infect, fungus hydra or elf tribal, +1 counters, -1 counters and the list goes on and on
If you want to make it a little cheaper, throw out a few of the expensive hydras and put in 4 stream of life. 1 green X = gain X life. So if you have infinite mana, but no hydra, having infinite life does put you at an advantage of staying alive :)
Urban utopia helps too. You can pay one more mana (one forest and on colorless) you got to draw a card and enchanted land has “add one mana of any color”
11:04 you say we used 4 mana (two blue and two green) to play the Freed from Reel and untap the arbor elf (so using 4 mana total) and then you said when we tap the arbor elf and untap our enchanted forest that we get three mana.. but doesn't that only give us two mana (1 green and 1 blue)? Where are you getting 3 mana from at this point?
for those with a little more money, 4 walking ballista, 4 endless one (a cheap card), we can keep the haste hydra, you probably want hangarback walker, you could splash red for something like banefire as well, if you really wanna get crazy you could run draw spells with X like pull from tomorrow in combination with labratory maniac

Sorry, i'm a tad confused. Since Mistcutter and the other hydras don't have haste so doesn't it mean that it'll take 3 turns to win?
Green instawin? Sign me up! Green is best color. Big creatures and turning them sideways!
Team Normie You're welcome! :)
Green is the worst color?
Team Normie yes
@@berryjuice3457 Green is best color in my opinion. But to each their own. I just prefer ramping into big creatures and turning them sideways.
*how to actually win magic XDD
I haven't heard any mention of format for this deck but I presume it would be for Modern. :)
Wonder if hungering hydra would be a good choice not sure what id take out
Edit: Missed the Haste.
Walking Ballista could be used as well as a turn 2 kill, but it is more expensive. Also, add Duskwatcher Recruiter to pull any number of creatures from your library to your hand (ie your walking Ballista.)
To be honest, you can do infinite green mana with Vizier of Remedies and Devoted Druid. Same concept, only 2 cards needed for infinite with no Forest requirement. A lot more expensive since it is better.
You should Google Mistcutter Hydra
Whoops, missed the Haste next to the Protection from Blue. Need to zoom in more to be able to see it clearly. lol.
(Look at Clock of Omens)
This is why I always put my enchantments behind the card they're enchanting. Makes it easier to manipulate the card that's actually tapping.
I was going to mention this if no one else did
Came here for this. Also, is corner case relevant, as some things only destroy/exile other permanents that are tapped. (There are no spells, however, that destroy a tapped enchantment that I could discover.)
I love watching your videos!! Thx for great content. So glad i found your channel
Is it possible to use fertile ground?! Instead of utopia sprawl?
10:24 is wrong it would be 3 mana, not 4 because one is already tapped. This would take another turn to complete. Also, it would take another turn after that one because when you create a new blue mana, it is tapped because you use it to make another one. Therefore on turn 3 you will only have 3 or 4 mana max, but the turn after that is infinite.
Cool deck but why no pack of negation in sb for control?
I might be misunderstanding Freed, but when you cast it you have 2 green and 2 blue mana. Casting leaves you with 1 blue which you use to untap the elf. Would you not then need another blue mana to tap the elf again?
Is the deck list available? Id like to build it for casual play.
So the utopia sprawl produces islands? I always thought they made mana...
Did I count wrong? Was that only 14 cards in the sideboard?
Hello could you for future videos put the decklist in the description or comments
can you post the deck list on aetherhub or something? This is modern it looks like?
Where's nykthos? Or burningtree? Or garruk? Or bellowing tanglewurm?
Made a few changes to the deck, i think this might be a little better and offer's a little more protection.
18 forest
4 Wooded Foothills
4 llanowar elves
4 arbor elf
4 utopia sprawl
2 courser of kruphix
3 karametra's acolyte
2 scourge of skola vale
4 kalonian hydra
2 hydra broodmaster
4 mistcutter hydra
2 genesis hydra
3 rancor
4 freed from the real
2 Apostle's Blessing
2 Blossoming Defense
Please correct me if I’m wrong, I would love to know. However, I think that “Freed from the Real” would not be able to untap the land, due to the wording of the card. It said untap enchanted creature. I would love to know what is everyone’s thoughts!
It untapps the elf which taps to untap the forest.
James Weller ah yes!! Thank you!!
12:10 How does the hydra have haste?
look on the card? :-P "Haste, protection from blue"
To clarify you do not get more tokens from broodmaster when attacking with kalonian hydra. Only when you pay the cost and it becomes monstrous
Vastwood Hydra. Sacrifice distribute counters there were on it to creatures you control. A $1-1.20 card that would go well with the Hydra that sacs creatures and gains counters equal to it's toughness.
This deck's not so budget anymore. It's about $120 on TCG Player
This looks like fun in a five way sword and shield game. Obviously one guy is totally screwed when you pulled it off, but thinking about everyone scrambling to get rid of it is hilarious.
opponent: "damn this is absurd, fatal push"
In 2020, this deck is like $150+!!! WOW.
Realy cool deck! :D but how good is the deck if dont pull that combo in yuor opening hand? is it still a fair deck? :)
thanks for the deck.i literally have all those cards in my deck tutor binder for a hydra deck. ..
Nice!
ZERO Ravager You're welcome. :)
Could throw in apostles blessing in the combo to give mistcutter hydra protection from any colour you need (white or black)
Yes
this is an infinite mana combo (and there are ones that run less cards to pull it) so basically you can get this "insta win" with any creature/spell tha t can deal damage to your enemy
Been looking for a good budget standard deck! Thanks bro! Skadoosh!
Modern
Can we get links to somewhere to purchase these cards
Polkranos is my favorite hydra card as far as art goes and the ability is pretty sweet, forever loving golgari synergies whether you're running life gain, infect, fungus hydra or elf tribal, +1 counters, -1 counters and the list goes on and on
gotta say, do you tap your cards the wrong way on purpose? cuz tapping is turn to the right lol
If you want to make it a little cheaper, throw out a few of the expensive hydras and put in 4 stream of life. 1 green X = gain X life. So if you have infinite mana, but no hydra, having infinite life does put you at an advantage of staying alive :)
cool fact: the hydra brood master X X/X hydra's are referring to the x of monstrosity so if you pay 6 mana you would create 3 3/3 hydra's
Finialy someone else who taps counter-clockwise
Almost everyone i know taps counter clockwise
That’s something that i hate in Magic
I don't know anyone that doesn't tap counter-clockwise.
@@taylorbates4742 might be a regional thing. Atm in my locals 26 people. Everyone taps counter clockwise.
He explained xx cost cards in a way that confused me a lot, and i know how they work. coulda explained it better.
Urban utopia helps too. You can pay one more mana (one forest and on colorless) you got to draw a card and enchanted land has “add one mana of any color”
Add villainous wealth into the deck you can exile your opponents entire library
But black mana would be pretty difficult to fit into the deck...
Would it be possible to post the deck list in the comments? It’d be easier to price the deck out that way if we wanted to purchase the cards.
Nice, building this deck right now.
for those with a little more money, 4 walking ballista, 4 endless one (a cheap card), we can keep the haste hydra, you probably want hangarback walker, you could splash red for something like banefire as well, if you really wanna get crazy you could run draw spells with X like pull from tomorrow in combination with labratory maniac
With this shell you can do all sorts. Maybe simic draw spells and some win con/ infinite turns/ etc.
I really enjoy these deck techs man keep up the good work
