    Nice video. I just got the Fabian today and the guy told me that the trunk holds a lot of water (similar to a succulent) he said to water it every 3-5 weeks and it's okay with slightly lower light 🤞🏾

    Thank you so much for this video! I appreciate you explaining your past experiences with this plant because it helps others to not make the same mistakes. Those are the most valuable videos in my opinion. I just got one today of similar size. I will be sure not to overwater it. Wish me luck!

    I had my Fabian stump for 4 months and like yours the stumb became wrinkling, and rotten. This issue started on one of the branches then migrated to rest of the plant. I had mine in a terra cotta pot with cactus soil because I had heard that it was best since they don't like to be in moist soil. I don't know what I did wrong I only would water it like every 6 weeks when the soil was dry. Thank you for posting this video there is little to no information on this plant online.

      Albert Castaneda that is why I posted the video. I looked all over for the info and I only found like a couple of postings about it. I found an Instagram post about a healthy one but when I asked about it I was told that she thinks she just found a good spot for it so that didn’t help me. I saw a couple of 6 foot ones at the local nursery and they were beautiful so I had to find a small one. The one that I posted in the video has been doing very well and growing new leaves. This is the longest that I have kept one alive.

      Plant Utopia how long have you had yours ? The one I have was growing new leaves but like maybe 2 weeks after the new growth came in it started wrinkling, the stump has a soft rotten like feel to it. I got mine at a big box store it faces a southeast facing window and it gets plenty of light.

    • @ThePlantUtopia
      @ThePlantUtopia  5 лет назад

      Albert Castaneda I have had mine since summer 2018. I saw it sitting all by itself at the local nursery. I looked at it and thought that I didn’t want to try it again but then had a change of heart and bought it. The other 2 I had did the same as you are describing with yours. The leaves would start yellowing and drooping on one branch and then it would get wrinkled and soft. The only thing you could try is cut off that rotten limb and put cinnamon on it and then later seal with glue so no water gets in it. I saw someone on RUclips do that with a pony tail palm. I tried to propagate this plant in water and it just rotted and died. I would water the other 2 that I had in the shower and then leave them in there or I would just water with a watering can and leave it in the saucer. I never leave this one in the shower and I don’t let water sit in a saucer anywhere near it. This plant will actually tell you when it is thirsty by drooping a little and then I know it needs to be watered. It is a very fussy plant and one mistake will be its demise. I think that is why there is not much about it and I don’t see it in many peoples collections.

    If you have hard water in your area, they don’t like that. I water mine with distilled water and i take it outside and he seem to love it. During the winter i dont really have a big problem bc it barely snow here, it’s still sunny during winter in Texas.

      How is it going with this plant? Mine got mealy bugs and died. I got a big beautiful one from Home Depot and it was doing great but then started dying off. I am over this plant, I recommend a Ming aralia instead. I might try the Fabian again because I really want to figure it out for good. When I did this video it was doing great so I thought I had figured it out.

      Mai don’t feel bad. Mine ended up getting mealy bugs so I tried to switch it to semi hydro and I lost it. There is a related plant called a Ming aralia and it is much easier to care for. I rescued it from the Lowe’s half dead rack many years ago and I still have it. If you can find one I am sure it will be much easier to keep for. Some plants are just a pain in the but and the stump aralia is one of them..

    I heard it doesnt like tapwater/ hard water. I had the exact same issue with mine. It was perfect and beautiful for months (i was giving very small amount of water) and one moment i stopped using destilled water and switched to tapwater that i left for 24 hours in a jar, to evaporate the chlorine (and i might added more tapwater than usual..) and it suddenly started loosing leaves. It almost lost all... Than i started to spray w essential oil, in water ( 1-3 drops of citronella in 100ml of water) on the stems and the leaves that didnt fall down yet. After spraying, it growed some tiny new leaves. But soon it dropped all leaves again... So I guess because i restarted watering it? Now im replanting it carefully, and talking to her 😁. Some ficus of mine came back to life before, so i try with my aralia too. Lets see. I heard also that it has to dry out only at the top of the soil, and than we can water again (this is not my experience tough😑} also, that its an easy houseplant... (if u know what to do😅) spidermites and stuff like that can kill it too easily, they say. And it loves humid and warm. Good luck for the aralias!

    thank you for the video it is really helpful. I also bought this plant a large one-two weeks before and now it's dropping too many leaves. it's face to the west window and I water it once a week but didn't shower the whole plant. is it normal for this plant to lose leaves in the green stage? and does this plant love showering the whole plant rather than watering the pot?

    • @ThePlantUtopia
      @ThePlantUtopia  4 года назад +1

      Thimali Wijayawardhana Have you checked the plant for pests? This plant is a mealy bug magnet and they will kill it if not dealt with right away. Are you checking the soil to make sure it is all the way dry before watering? Since the plant is dropping so many leaves, it is not happy or there is something wrong. I would inspect the leaves with a magnifying glass to make sure it doesn’t have any pests first and if there are no pests then I would check the soil to make sure it is drying out. If you can, I would get this plant in a terra cotta pot with very well draining soil such as cactus soil. They sell these plants in plastic pots which are not good for them because the soil stays wet longer in plastic. Good luck and I hope it is something simple. This is one of the toughest plants to grow in my opinion. I personally think orchids are much easier. A plant similar to this one is the Ming aralia and it is so much easier. I rescued one from the lowes discount shelf and it is a very pleasant, easy going plant.

    I received this plant as a gift. I did do research regarding watering. Few weeks later, the leaves started falling off from the top to the middle of the plant. I know it’s not dead because leaves keep growing fro the bottom of the trunk. Why does this process happen? Can it be prevented?

    • @ThePlantUtopia
      @ThePlantUtopia  2 года назад +1

      You need to check the leaves for any bugs like mealy bugs. You also need to check for any rot in the base of the plant. It might be Mealey bugs since it is at the top and middle of the plant. It is a good sign that there are leaves growing from the bottom of the trunk. I highly recommend a terra cotta pot and minimal watering.

    • @ThePlantUtopia

    I am a newbie, and I have a huge Fabian I got for like 30 bucks, its around 1 meter tall. I've had it for about a year and the leaves as you say are now falling off (winter here) and I am freaking out. Its a huge potted plant and there is no drainage from the pot. Its too heave to douche and I have no knowledge on what to do now. :( Sry for my bad English.

    • @ThePlantUtopia
      @ThePlantUtopia  5 лет назад

      Amoroussparkle I would first check if it has any insects especially scale. Scale are those flat guys that suck the juice out. They are especially hard to see on this plant. Then I would check for any mushy limbs. The plant limbs should be firm. Even though it is a big plant it is a good idea to check the roots and soil. If this plant is not in terra cotta already then I would put in a terra cotta pot that is only a couple inches bigger than the rootball. Make sure you replant in a chunky, well draining mix with orchard bark, perlite and charcoal.

      Idk if you still have this plant but you said in your comment that it’s a huge potted plant with no drainage hole??? I would put that plant in a new pot with at least one drainage hole in it. Repot it into well draining crumbly soil. You may need a friend to help you lift it but it’s worth it to save the plant.
