  • FRA-IAD: Our family has been pretty lucky to have very minimal travel complications over the last few years (no major delays, cancelations, lost bags) so I guess we were due for a bad one.
We were originally supposed to fly out of Frankfurt on March 30th, 2023, but instead flew out on March 31st, 2023, 23 hours behind schedule due to the following series of events. Funny enough the same flight took off about 2 hours later so there were 2 747-8s in Washington Dulles on March 31st, 2023.
    1) Delayed over 4 hours due to an engine problem on the aircraft.
    2) Finally allowed to board; everyone on the plane, getting the last of the paperwork sorted....and then a loud hissing sound echoes throughout the cabin. The noise turned out to be the rear left door emergency slide; essentially it was armed as a technician was leaving and triggered it (pictures as the end).
    3) We were instructed to de-plane as they would not be able of fix it in the next few hours and would leave the next morning.
    4) Received our hotel voucher and checked into our hotel at 10PM with no bags as they left them on the aircraft given we would fly out the next day on the same plane.
    5) At the airport the next morning, massive line for customs and security and my wife got stuck outside customs (long story). But eventually we made it on the plane, leaving the gate 23 hours behind schedule
That is a very high level timeline of our experience; I could write an essay about it. I give praise to the Lufthansa crew; it was same crew that operated our flight the next day as well so they were all very kind and sympathetic. They gave our two children a lot of swag (hats, airplane toys, backpacks with amenity kits, coloring books, wings, etc). They knew it was hard on all of the passengers. We also made friends with a cute couple who had a girl our son's age so they made the overall experience go by faster than it would have by ourselves. Count our blessings.
Hope you enjoyed this video. Stay safe and healthy everyone.
