This is gonna be SO COOL!!! nice cat cameo :-)
Hehehehe thanks bro
If I am a dog person can I become a great hobbyist like you two or are cats required?
@@benshade0 I am a cat and dog person so it is possible!
One of the things I love about these kinds of videos about creating something is the moment when the thing that is being made looks really wrong and maybe failed, but then it turns out that it was actually all going according to plan and the finished result is perfect
Yeah me too man it's such a fun hobby moment!
You released templates, you the real mvp of this how to stuff
As someone that doesn't have a hot wire cutter I now feel I can make this. My only suggestion would be right at the base have the bottom half inch or so stained a little more than everywhere else to simulate the ground being wetter and rain and water collecting at the bottomed of the wall. Immense piece of terrain through, really awesome!!
I like the idea of using rocks to vary the heights of the trees.
I loved the blunt blade Merry clip reference 😂😂 that was brilliant
haha yep :D
Once again Zorpazorp delivers on a thing I needed help with! Totally using this tutorial on walls and towers for my Frostgrave setting!
Hell yeah dude! Be sure to post pics in our Facebook group!
Been watching you from the start. Really glad your growing your channel as it’s so refreshing to see such user friendly guides and someone who is so professional with there tutorials. Keep smashing it!
Thanks so much Tom!! Lots more to come!!!
this thing is going to be MASSIVE - can't wait to see it and all the tutorial vids that follow
Thanks Rex!
I watch, I learn!
Great videos mate, really explains it clearly and shows well the procedures done. 😍
Awesome, thank you!
This is so seriously awesome! I can't wait to try building stuff like this. Well done!
Glad it's got you pumped James!
Youre video's are realy the best. When playing a battle always a good combination of close up and complete view. When you make things its the same and always a good and cleare explanation of wat you do and how to do it and jou always show it.
Very nice work and youre video's keep me and my girlfriend motivated to keep painting, playing and building things for or own LOTR mini's sinds oure club is closed to do the same things.
Glad you like them mate that's awesome :)
This is amazing and its like the first time i've seen a tutorial where I thought "yeah, I would nail that with your method". I don't even want a MT board but after this i'm syked to make some walls!!!
Hell yeah Richo!
Great work. Love watching your videos. Thanks for putting this together!
Glad you enjoy it!
Top notch work as always Lachlan! The amount of money being saved by building through these templates is a real game changer. Simple products that can be found at any hardware store. Excited to see the rest of the project! Stay safe and happy gaming from New York State!
Thanks my man, glad you like them! :)
The gates of Minas Tirith will be a great build to do now for 2022
Very impressive! I've only just bought a hotwire cutter and had been hunting down the old gw templates for Minas Tirith, but your stuff is far superior. I'll be glad to follow along and then dive in myself!
Hell yeah! post photos if you do on our facebook group!
man! you put some awesome and practical terrain tips for us mortals looks like pro´s!!! Keep going!!!!!!
Thanks
You are a saving grace, recently got back into this game due to quarantine and my gf loves LOTR and wanted to get Into this game as well. She wanted to makes fortresses but didn’t know where to start and this channel totally helps, so thank you!
No problem mate! A partner who wants to play SBG you've got a keeper there!
This is awesome and super useful! It has inspired me to build a 40k diorama using this method as the primary surface of the Imperial Palace wall. Looking forward to seeing the other parts and the additional paint schemes!!
Hell yeah that's awesome!
Wonderful stone work 👍 Thank you for sharing this video and for the templates 😉
My pleasure 😊
Most useful! Thanks for sharing your expertise (and templates)! 😀👍
My pleasure!
Outstanding work Lachy.
Thanks dude :)
Even tho i dont play the middle earth game, i realy enjoy watching youre build video's. Cant wait to see it all in the end.
I appreciate that!
Youre video's are so clean! You desribe every single detail you must now for the project en show Nice smooth shots! Keep going the good work 👌 awesome channel
Thanks so much dude :) :)
You are amazing! Thank you so much for your hard work! Hope to show one day my Minas Tirith to my future kids hahaha
Thanks so much mate, just launched the next part, hope you like it!
O. M. G. I am so excited to see this. I am so excited to make it.
Hell yeah! post photos if you do on our facebook group!
Absolutely brilliant, as ever You're an inspiration!
Cheers Wulf
Wow mate bravo! Awesome realistic work there!
Thank you! Cheers!
If you have the spare change a Dremel can really speed up the carving time! The slopes especially! A sander tip clears through foam fast and leaves a smooth surface. Make sure to wear a mask though. Don’t want to breathe in foam
Can i just say, i love videos, but its not often it impacts me so much that i press the like button, this is amazing and made me want to hit the like button more :)
p.s finding this video and your channel has made me very curious about the lotr game, enough to make me try it out :D
Wow, thank you! Glad to rope you into Middle Earth too!
Outstanding! I am lost for words
Love it! Just might have to give it a shot this summer :)
Hell yeah!
This is amazing :) thank you so much for putting this out there!!!!!!!
You're so welcome!
Got my foam boards yesterday 😍 gonna put in work today(: ill post up some pics in the lotr Facebook group once I get it all together 🤘
YES
cant wait
As always, another glorious video of your GOD terrain making skills.
I enjoyed it a lot, man.
Keep on with the good work!
Huges from Spain.
Thanks, will do!
Absolutely fantastic! I'm really curious to see how you're going to achieve the curvature of the walls when they are all put together. I'd love to see a video on how you did that too!
Coming in the next video bro!
Love ya Zorp!
Love ya Xig!
Awesome work!
Thank you! Cheers!
Hi, i started a very similar project 2 years ago. I built the complete gatehouse (14 cm wide gate) with the four towers (48cm high) and the two walls protecting the area in front off the entrance. For the crenalation i used two laser-cutted mdf stencil with the Proxon hotwire table (which i used for the whole project). I’ve texturized the walls with your same metod. Now i need to build the rest of the modular walls and towers for a total of 2 meters long. I also have ti paint them ofc. Keep up the good work and regards from Italy
That sounds AMAZING Davide! Can you plrease post some photos on my facebook group? www.facebook.com.groups/zorpazorp
FIRST! Love it already, Lachie
Are you going to connect the Minas Tirith board, the pelennor fiels board and the Osgiliath board for on huge Gondor board?
You better believe it! #spoilersmuch
@@Zorpazorp No way! You will need a school gym for that! Hahahahaha! GO FOR IT PLEASE
Really nice job!
Thank you! Cheers!
I got the like nr 1000! Incredible work, i'm gonna use this for sure!
Hell yeah enjoy!
Your videos are awesome. Can you start putting the materials used and the sizing info under your videos so we know what to use when making this?
All the sizing information is on the template in the description :) and the whole build is just foam :)
Really impressive work! I may have to start my own project after seeing this! Never made any scenery myself though so I'll probably start small, maybe not go for Minas Tirith quite yet haha
You can do it!!!
best modelist and all around advisor in Games Workshop lord of the rings community i think
Wow, thanks! :D
I've never built terrain before. I'm going to follow this for a custom castle.
Yay good luck!
And there it is! Just like you promised on Facebook! Love it mate. Especially how you give that extra bit of depth.
Two questions:
Have you considered buying a Proxxon hot wire cutter? It really speeds up your process and gives beautiful cuts. You could cut 5 crenellations sections from 1 5cm block of foam and slice it down.
Other question: does your foam also have that smooth silky layer/finish on the outer sides of the board? Gerard Boom from Shiftinglands advices to thinly slice that off because it doesn’t take glue and textures well.
Thanks a lot mate!
Thanks dude!! I deliberately didn't use a proxxon in this video as I wanted to teach everyone who didn't have one it is possible to do it with a blade :)
I find the silky finish is totally fine for texturing you just haver toi push a little harder, but sometimes it is better to sand it back if it's being stubborn :)
Waouuu juste ouf j'adore ^^ ^^ !! !!
merci!!
Yes brother!!!
I've just had word from RUclips HQ and apparently anyone who puts mint slice in 3rd place is having their channel deleted :/
@@Zorpazorp hahahaahah
Superb Sir
I was dubious with the paint but it really really came together and looks fantastic!
i think you could always add a little weathering using wethering powders.
Keep it up man!
Thank you so much dude 😀 Yeah I think I'll cover the weathering powders in the advanced painting tutorial, which brand do you prefer?
This looks like it is going to be so awesome, can’t wait to see the next episode, but in the meantime I will need to do some testing to see what foam is best to use in the UK. Not sure if my train set foam will work on Minas Tirith.
Hell yeah Alan, keen to see your progress man :)
I am gonna try to make this today.
Hell yeah!
Turned out good. But I only had 1inch thick so my wall thinner, but still can get 2 minis width. But next one will be thicker.
Speaking of rocks: Lachie you rock! 😝
hahahaha cheers CM
Love this!! Cannot wait to make my own! Will you do one for the main gate??
Absolutely man I have so much more to come just been held up by a bunch of crap but more coming by Christmas hopefully much sooner.
Wow, I wanna play on tha table!
Hi ! Fantastic videos, really cool of you to have released the templates for free ! In a few weeks i'm going to make some little walls, I have big thicc piece of foam in my garage, I tried undercoating them with a Chaos Black primer from GW, but it melt the foam.
You talked about this issue in ur video. Are GW spray primer too strong, or is my foam not a good one ?
That's awesome!! You can't use normal spray paints from it has to be special foam safe spray, if you don't have the special stuff undercoat by hand :)
What would you use as a primer through an Airbrush?
Any white will do bro, it's just going down on foam bro you chipping isn't going to be a problem because the materials is so absorbent you'll get a good bond easy.
As always, really great work - I assume this method could also be used for the Rammos Echor wall as well (dimension change, perhaps)? That one was all individually-cast plaster bricks, right?
Yes, absolutely :D
Hi,
Loved the quiet before the storm.... I mean the rave lol
This looks great, I just bought battle of pelennor field...
So this will look good in the background...
Got 2 walls glued and will do the stone effects tomorrow.
Can I ask will you be doing the gatehouse and towers...How about seige towers
Anyway brilliant video and thank you
For your time
Hey Andy! Glad you liked it mate! The towers and gatehouse will be out in the coming week, gatehouse a bit further down the line, will be doing siege towers too! and the buildings!
Great video, thanks! Is there a coverage / protective step at the end? What product would you recommend to protect the paintwork?
Matt varnish if you're worried but it's pretty durable :)
If you are priming by hand, I would mix some Mod Podge into your base paint. This will harden the foam a bit and doesnt obscure detail.
A good suggestion!
Hey mate, I’ve tried the Bunnings near me for foam but they’ve only got the bastion green stuff which is pretty shocking.
Whereabouts did you source the yellow stuff, and is it more dense?
This paintjob is f*ck*ng Amazing dude !!! 😍😍😍
Thanks so much dude it was a struggle to get it right haha!
Zorpazorp i feel you 😂 my osgiliath ruins Looks like helms Deep 😂
OMG. So nice to see you're in my area, and everything. Next pay means a big shop with you kids. Bit of a rando question, though. What knife are you using to cut the foam? Mine isn't really doing the job and I need to upgrade. Recommend? Ta, bro.
Edit: Duh. Paid more attention and read the logo on the knife. All is well. Bunnings run!
Bunnings indeed!!! And grab plenty of spare blades, they're nice and cheap and throw them out regulaarly! You can't kill orcs with a dull blade!
Awesome material. Thanks for this and all the other content. I'm actually making a lot of stuff for the incoming quest of the ringbrearer and this really helps! There is any clue on the release date of the quest of the ring bearer?
Thanks dude! no clues yet!
Muy bueno
Thank you!
Yes please on the siege towers!!
Coming soon!
Just started with this hobby and LOVE your videos!
what kind of glue do you use to add 2 pieces of foam together? looks like wood glue?
Yeah dude just OVA, I use a fast setting version called weldbond :)
Watching you cut this out by hand got me thinking that one could save a lot of time on the battlements using something like a Silhouette or Circut to cut the foam - this might require multiple sheets of styrene glued together after cutting, but it has the advantage of being a largely hands off/can run in parallel while you are prepping and finishing other walls.
Anyway looking forward to the templates, will try them on a Glowforge after some modification with MDF.
That sounds really cool dude I'm not familiar with those tools!
It's from the scrapbooking world, I've used them to cut stencils to put numbers on terrain and vehicles (with a bit of airbrushing). :) Can literally take your templates and send them to the machine to precision cut - it's hands off once the cutting begins. They are moderately priced - in the USD$200-400 range. Not really certain about the thickness of foam that could be cut, but might be worth some research.
A way tp save time during the battlements section is to use the template against the foam and use a polystyrene cutter. Its a heated wire that cuts through the foam. The template held in place will keep you from cutting to far and it saves an ass load of time and blades. The thicker the foam, the slower you will go but it is still way quicker than cutting. I actually prefer the polystyrene cutter because if done right the cuts will be close to perfect. They range in price and some expensive ones are pretty cool, but the cheap ones can be bought at a hobby shop like Micheal's.
You're spot on :) I would of course normally use my proxxon but this is a guide for a lot of beginners who are contributing to the community project :D
Maybe I should show using a hot wire cutter in future vids?
amazing work! but I can't find anywhere a spray that doesn't melt the foam... where could I buy it?
This is absolutely amazing! Would you be doing the mordor siege towers as well?
They're on the way already!
Zorpazorp wow! That’s awesome! Can’t wait to see
Dose any one know of a good foam board to be purchased in the UK. I've been looking for a few weeks and cannot find anything that looks like the foam board used in here?
how do u plant it on your mat / playfield?
One of my fav painting vids of yours, i will use it in a slightly custimized kind for the elder scrolls tabletop
I will magnetise it to a custom board :)
One little question. Do you know if there is a way to make the cranelation pins more stronger? I mean adding pva glue to the paint for the base coat by hand or airbrush. I ask becuase I'm making my walls and tis part seems to be very soft, and very easy to damage or broken in the normal use or wearing.
Javier 'm lucky that my foam is really dense but yes mixing PVAor modge podge into the basecoat will help strengthen it :)
I Love this !!! What product did you used for the wash? Any links for it ?
Liquitex blank ink is what you want :) Check out Jeremy' from Black magic craft's video on it :)
Do you know where can I find this foam? I search for polystyrene foam on Amazon US and the results are a lot of Styrofoam. And Styrofoam is awful to shape, paint and make any kind of terrain (I tried before) :s
Try your hardware store in the insulation section :)
Do you have a link to the spray from Office Works? Can't seem to find it, thanks
Haven't used this myself so test first :) www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/ironlak-spray-paint-400ml-appliance-white-ilappsik
Did they melt the foam?
do you have any templates/instructions for the gates? wanting to make that portion for the official pelennor fields scenario (gondor at war version) before i move on to the rest of it
Still getting there Hollie! Aiming to do the gate in third quarter of this year :)
@@Zorpazorp ok cool thanks!
damn i would love to help with this build but saldy no work since covid hit and cant get a hot wire cutter or i would have sent like 8 meters of walls and towers for ya as i have nothing but TIME FOR FUN! . cheers Zorpa cant wait for the epic battle in the future , cant wait for the army of the dead and the easterners (pirates)
Glad you're enjoying the videos Cory!! It's going to be wild aye haha
what type's of paint did you use for the undertones and drybrushing?
Just house paints from bunnings mate :)
Awesome. I will be starting a build of these next week. Love your stuff.
How many fingers do you think the battle will have when you and your friends are done with the product
ummmmm.... sorry haha?
Where can I get a scalpel
like the one you are using?
Mine is an old disposable medical scalpel, I'd just go to your local hobby shop :)
When will your master class on painting stone be coming out, will be working on ruins from your Amon Hen video but am stumped as to how I should paint it? Thank you and keep up the good work, the streams and videos are getting me through the lockdown
Thanks Ryan!!!! I'll probably do that video after the next Minas tirith installment, so people can get their wall built first :) so probably three weeks :)
Zorpazorp awesome thank you!!
@@ryanjames2778 I lied haha ;)
Zorpazorp how could you! I even got excited about the stream last night only to find out that I got the wrong date...
@@ryanjames2778 Hahaha sorry dude ;)
Haha ffs heres me wondering why my osgiliath ruins are still bright orange with puddles of paint on the floor .......i was just at Officeworks aswell :/ .. hahaha cheers mate top job as always
Noooooo, see my other comment haha :'( Sorry I missed this one man.
Since the walls are circular, how do you plan to connect the walls?
We'll be going through that in the next video, but essentially it's much easier for people to build straight sections and join them at an angle and then you can use the walls to be other locations too not just Minas Tirith, but we'll have little angle joiners :)
What you you say is the most cost-effective material for “stone-wall effects”?
Here in the US you can get fiam board feom the Dollar Store that has easy peel off paper. It's cheap and easy to work with like the xps foam. I would have used that for the battlement portion. I'm sure there is a similar product available in Australia or wherever else.
Extrdued polystyrene fro mthe insulation section at a hardware store :)
Anyone know where I can get some of that foam in the uk
Hey Owain! It's extruded polystyrene, I'm not sure about UK though sorry mate.
In another video, as I recall, you indicated that someone 3d printed the battlements for you. Who printed those battlements for you, and are they available for sale?
Also making the walls themselves might be something that Knights of Dice could make out of MDF. After the walls are basically a box of 280mm (11 inches) x 300mm (12 inches) x 100mm (4 inches). I don't know how well the laser milling could make the stone blocks and texturing)
The laser milling could make battlements much easier to make
Similar kits could be made for towers, landings, wedges and related structures. This could then become a project for one modeler and would be profitable for you and some of your friends. A customer could buy multiple kits.
But for those wanting to make projects similar to your Minas Tirith wall, this would make the project much easier.
A great suggestion TJ but unfortunately the design of Minas Tirith is protected by copyright, Games Workshjop and Time Warner would be knocking on my door pretty quickly haha
those printed battlements aren't available anymore sadly
What are the dimensions of the 2 first piece please ?
It's all in the template, but the wall dimension is 280mm wide, 300mm high and 100mm thick.
This is gonna be HUUUUUUUGE
YEAH DUUUUDE
Can i use Bluefoam.
Can i use games workshop paint and sprays
Not sprays they will melt foam :) but otherwise whatever you want although that might expensive.

I was looking forward to downloading these templates so I can give it a try but was saddened to see that I have to give you all my personal info. Thank you but I think I'll pass. This won't stop me from watching your videos, tho, there's just too much good stuff.

I just host it on there so I can count how many times they've been downloaded.

Great work as always, Lachlan - and such an easy way to build this stunning city of Middle Earth. Congrats!
I would like to make a suggestion, because I used similar techniques when I did build my Gondor walls (inspired by your work as your surely remember): If you own a Proxxon Thermocut or similar cutter just pin the template onto the foam board and then use the Thermocut to cut the components out (low heat recommened). If you use a thicker piece of foam board you can cut slices / sheets instead of cutting seperate wall pieces - see: ruclips.net/video/s6lyEKg4kaY/видео.html This safes a lot of time and it's easy to do.
Thanks dude glad you liked it! I'll absolutely making my own set with a hot wire cutter bro, this tutorial is just aimed at all the less experienced hobbyists at home who don't have access to one during isolation :)
@@Zorpazorp Yes, to keep basic techniques in mind is always a great help for beginners. I think I'm maybe a bit to addicted to the hot wire cutter because of the book ;-) :D
It is an amazing tool haha
I came here for the terrain, but I stayed for the rave...
HAHAHA SOMEONE NOTICED!
You're a patriot.
but there is no curvature on the walls they won't be able to be the semicircle shape of minas tirith
Patience young one ;)
@@Zorpazorp yes master
@@Zorpazorp i just realised could you use the towers along the wall as a way of uttering the 180 degree angle and making the walls curve
