Watching this back in 2023. Being English obviously I was absolutely gutted when we lost. But what an absolutely great game. Just shows how far the women’s has come over these last few years.
Giving the quality of how the Netherlands played, this was basically the WC finals. As an American, I was on the edge of my seat the whole second half.

We are very angry due to the events of the last two World Cups, Brazil and Russia, especially due to their selection of referees for the cup, referees who have been previously sanctioned, if this is the most important football competition, please select referees with a clean record. The Colombian soccer team was clearly stolen in both competitions, for example in Brazil 2014, the match between Brazil and the arbitrary Brazil was just for Colombia, an unusual robbery was clearly seen on the field of play. Fernandinho made around 6 fouls to James to stop him and with intention, in no fault they took yellow from Fernandinho. On the other hand, Yepes' goal was not out of place, it was a totally valid goal since it was clearly enabled, and finally the referee whistles an alleged foul by James, which I say supposedly because James stole the ball cleanly and after the fact They take yellow out of James, and guess what was produced by that SUPPOSED fault, that is, David Luis' free kick goal caused by a non-existent fault. If someone had to pass it was Colombia if it had not been for that goal that was not a fault and if Yepes' goal had been validated we would have won 2-1. At the 2018 World Cup in Russia they selected the worst referee in history. Proof of this were his bad decisions on the playing field, such as the foul that I whistle in favor of England in a stomp from Ashley Young to Wilmar Barrios! That is, the referee whistled the foul backwards. On the other hand, in the penalty play for England there was a previous foul by Harry Kane on Sánchez! So that fault should have been whistled first, but at that time the referee was not seeing why the VAR had to intervene. To make matters worse, the goal annulled Carlos Bacca if it was a goal, the referee annulled it for the presence of a second ball in the field of play, but the truth is that the ball never entered the field so the line judge stopped him with his hand !!!! According to the regulations, the play is only canceled if a second ball is on the field of play, but in this case the second ball was never INSIDE the field of play. It seems to me and to all Colombians a lack of respect that they always do this to us! If they are only going to let historical teams win because it suits them, then their cup no longer makes sense. YES TO FAIRPLAY! THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR ATTENTION.
I'm English but I'm glad usa won, I remember gabby Logan and some English ladies player being so biased before the game it was cringworthy. They were saying England are gonna do this and that USA had no chance, I felt so bad for retired usa goalkeeper hope. It was like she was not even in the studio, they hardly spoke to her.

What a fantastic game of football this was, I was gutted when England lost but I still abserloutly loved the game and it was a great advertisement for women's football and women's sport in general. We had our chances to win the second half with the Ellen white VAR and the Houghton missed penalty but it just didn't go our way unfortunately. Greatest Player in the World according to Phil Neville was ball watching for the Press goal and defending no one for the Morgan goal. Lastly, she and her teammates lost their composure and focus in the last 20 minutes.
Same. Even though I'm American and wanted the USA to win, this was painful to watch. You can tell how much the England players wanted it. They played their hearts out.
My memory on this match is on three things: (a) The referee handling the game, (c) Christen Press and Alex Morgan doing what they do best and (c) Alyssa Naeher blocking the England penalty! Game Over!
It was a great match. What White did was rather a Schwalbe but referee made it a penalty against USA. It was a very exciting match and both were in constant attack mode.
Take a look at 1:29:51. White drifts a few steps offside. The ball is played to the onside winger. White sprints from that offside position and has a few steps on her defender because of that initial offside position. It is okay to be in an offside position but you can not interfere with the play or gain an advantage by starting in an offside position. I guess officials have as much trouble with the offside call as the hand ball call. The penalty should never have happened. Besides being offside White went down with assumed contact. On none of the camera angles do you definitively see contact. Remind anyone of Neymar?

Sauerbrunn clipped the back of White's right leg as she shot. There's only one camera angle that shows it--but it's clear. No problem--Naeher had it covered :)
Yea it was a tough call. You could tell the ref even after seeing the contact on VAR had trouble deciding -- it's tough to tell if Sauerbrunn APPROACHED White's space and clipped her, or if White's foot entered Sauerbrunn's natural path during her shot's backswing.
I think the grey area in this foul is whether Sauerbrunn made contact or if White's recoiling her leg for an attempt at kicking the ball made contact with Sauerbrunn's leg. Suaerbrunn did not initiate the contact. The contact came as White recoiled her leg and it then came in contact with Sauerbrunn leg. You can't avoid some contact when you are that close to any player. The question then became is it a foul or just incidental contact?
Me watching this after England have lifted 4 forties in the last 14 months . Including winning the euros and women's finalisam. They are going into the 2023 world cup with 1 game beaten .
watching this game live I was so captivated by the win that I didn't even see the English players on the ground in heartbreak. Rewatching the game for the game experience and not just the hopeful feeling of wanting my country to go to the final was quite entertaining. The players really were expecting to get through to the finals.
of course they do, i dont think there's any point in turning up if you dont have that belief you could go on to win. And I think to be fair England are the closest country to really challenging the USA for a final. This felt more like a final than the final against the netherlands

I'm a U.S. fan, but even I can see on the replay from the back right that Sauerbrun clips White in the back of lower leg while she's in the shooting motion. Not easy to see at first, but a clear penalty.

that is why playing a flat back 4 is dangerous, you have to be reliant on refs to call the offsides every time and they just won't.

watching this game live I was so captivated by the win that I didn't even see the English players on the ground in heartbreak. Rewatching the game for the game experience and not just the hopeful feeling of wanting my country to go to the final was quite entertaining. The players really were expecting to get through to the finals.
of course they do, i dont think there's any point in turning up if you dont have that belief you could go on to win. And I think to be fair England are the closest country to really challenging the USA for a final. This felt more like a final than the final against the netherlands

VAR had doubts that a foul had been committed in the penalty area and that was the reason VAR instructed the on-field referee to watch the replay on the pitchside screen. At this point, the call became a subjective incident meaning that the referee had the last word. There was never a foul.*
I'm a U.S. fan, but even I can see on the replay from the back right that Sauerbrun clips White in the back of lower leg while she's in the shooting motion. Not easy to see at first, but a clear penalty.
