  • In this video I detail the failed turbos on my 2013 Audi S7 I purchased from salvage auction a few months ago. I show the failure, what it looks like, what causes it, repairs, and reasoning for upgrading to a larger turbos. I hope you enjoy. I believe you have it backwards as to what the root cause of the failure is. Debris getting into the turbo isn't what causes the failure. Rather, the screens clog, restricting the flow of oil, causing oil starvation to the turbos. Plus, I don't think you put your check valves in right.

Thanks for you comment. Audi actually superceeded the orginal screens equipped on these vehicles with the new screens that are said to trap finer particles. Had the old screen been clogged i could visually of seen that upon removal and have not encountered that to date on these vehicles. As far as the check valve goes, at 8:05 in the video i demonstrate the operation of the check valve. Installing it upside down would cause oil pressure to push on the back side of the valve holding it closed and not allow oil to enter the turbocharger bearings. One would find out very quickly if they install this part incorrectly as turbo failure would occur very quickly, i assure you i performed the installation properly.

If you follow any Audi forums, you’d see that the screens and check valve are the root cause of turbo failures. I jus purchased a 2013 A8L with only 58k
Miles and the turbos were replaced 2 years ago when the car had only 38k miles. Every service interval was performed on this car by Audi. There is a kit that moves the screen to a location that is easier to service which I am
      Going to install

Fortunately all is well, no further problems since the repairs. Been driving the car about 10 months compiling video for part 3. Unfortunately been busiier than i had hoped so part 3 is taking some time.

How did you manage to remove the charge air cooler /AOS unit? did you have to drain the coolant fluid, and strip detach the radiator support to make room?

    • @ChronCrew

Yes, unfortunately it is alot of work to get the charge air cooler off these vehicles.

@@ChronCrew Awesome! Looking forward to it. I also bought a ‘13 S7 from Copart few months ago. Turbos were shot as well. I decided to gamble and get Chinese replicas, and I just put it all together yesterday. It’s running great but have not had it on the road yet to really test it. I’m just regretting not upgrading to the RS turbos though.

Thank you your upload! I think this engine is in a desperate state. Every rotation is adding up the damage of the cilinder bore and the rod bearings. The residual oil should be removed completely from the engine: I would say this engine should be dissassembled completely and wash it out before any turns. The pistons, the rings, the cylinder bores and rod bearings should be checked, measured precisely to assess the damage. Very likely the measurements are out of specs and the engine is a bin of screws. Even if you decide just to flush it only the increased oil consumption, lower power and a short engine life is very likely. Sorry to see that. What is the current status of the project?

I just dont understand the screens. the whole oild system is run on a filter that filters way better than a screen. Id rather do an oil bypass if that dirty oil is a issue.
