Just subbed, thanks for doing this video series. My son just brought home an 036 Pro from work, they threw it out. It has low compression, but otherwise is in good shape. These seem like great saws, really excited to tear into it and see what is causing the low compression.
Sounds like a good project man. 036's are excellent saws...getting one for free is even better. I'd recommend a good quality piston like meteor. Put er together well and you'll have yourself a darn good saw for years to come!
Just ordered a piston and cylinder rebuild kit for my pro 360, it seized up probably from overheating and has hardly any compression which I figure is due from seized rings in the Piston. This video help a lot, since I have never broke a chainsaw down but I have regular engines. Probably do it in a couple weeks and hopefully have mice all back up and running. Thank Jeremy
Dear Thomas your video has helped me Also I bought the cheapest top end and piston I'm talking baby chickens cheap for a whopping forty dollars yes I had money I guess if it's brakes I can replace it agan Thanks for posting this stuff
Glad it could help you man. Id definitely mix your fuel at atleast 40:1. Them cheaper aftermarket top ends will last longer with that fuel ratio. If you put it together good im sure it'll serve ya well. Thanks man!
Quick update impatience a lack of ring compressor and a handy screwdriver with heavy hands leads to complications and a new piston I found that starter rope tho so that's good you know stories like that
Good vid! Never tore one down, but about too. Got an 036, plug is stripped. Used it right after I bought it, wouldn't hold bar oil. Cutting for 10 minutes, laying on side stalled out. And the whole saw was smoking! Never have I seen a saw smoke like that. Guy won't give my money back,so figure I'll rebuild it myself. How do you pull the rod off the crank?
I just picked up a 036 Pro. It does have a scored piston and barrel so I’m looking at the Meteor or the Highway Top End kit. Which would you use as they are priced pretty close . Do you see a lot of failures with the rubber intake boot leaking or letting debris in causing the scoring?
I rarely see intake boot failures on stihls tbh, but it does happen occasionally. It could have been poor tuning-bad or improper fuel mix-dull chain etc. Those would be my guess anyhow. Id sand the aluminum transfer off the cylinder, reuse it, and use a meteor piston myself. Thats if the cylinder can be saved of course. Aftermarket cylinders will never perform like OEM do...out of the box and without modding them anyhow.
Ive used hyway alot tho. Some looked better than others. They'll get your saw running again if needed but the performance wont be like it was with the oem top end.
@@jeremythomas9134 So would you opt for a Meteor or go OEM to get the most out of the build? I saw your reply to someone else’s question and mine is like their saws condition so would just replace the crank bearings and seals or replace the crank as well? You mentioned a tube of some sort’s as well and last I’ve heard the fuel line is a bitch to replace on the 036 is that true as well?
@@forrestebert5276 to get the most out of your saw id go with oem cylinders. Yours may not be too damaged that it cant be saved. Like I said you may be able to sand the bad spots out of it. What you're doing is sanding off the aluminum that came from the piston, that melted from the piston and transferred to the cylinder. When it comes to Pistons in my opinion meteor is just as good and won't make a huge difference in performance going with that brand. Fuel lines aren't hard to replace at all. Lube them up with some oil and they usually go in pretty easily. You don't want to tug on them too much. And I recommend staying OEM when it comes to fuel line. The Chinese ones are pretty much junk.
I did the top end on my 360pro and in 5 minutes it locked up again and I swear to you I’m running the correct mix gas. I don’t understand it. What should I look for
Thank you, Jeremy. Got an 036 pro with a badly scored top end. Don’t know why it occurred but it wasn’t something obvious like straight gas. Is there something else I need to check so that the new piston and cylinder don’t get eaten up too, or is this just normal wear after lots of hours?
Seth you should prolly replace your crank seals from the sounds of it. Id make sure your impulse line looks good too. I prefer the way the impulse are set up on the 036 compared to other stihl models. If you replace your seals and tune properly you should be good. But no...a badly scored piston isnt from normal wear. Could have been an air leak...improper tuning and or bad mix....or running a dull chain. All those can burn up a saw quick.
@@Sensei948 i use 40:1 in all my saws. Some people like 32:1 but i myself dont. Yes the built up carbon from running a rich mix can lead to piston damage.
