Try This If Your Mamiya RB67 Shutter Won't Fire

- If you just picked up a Mamiya RB67 and the shutter won't release, your camera probably isn't broken. Try these few steps to see if it fixes the problem. This camera is finicky. So if you don't do the proper steps, it has mechanisms to prevent your film from being exposed.
I just got mine, and it took me a couple of hours to figure out that the problem I was having was that the multiple exposure mode has to be turned on for you to fire the shutter without any film in the camera. So I made this quick video for anyone who runs into the same problem when they first get their camera. I hope this helps.

Life saver!!! Just got my RB67 off eBay and was worried it was broken. This worked perfects, thank you.
I just got a RB67 SD and wondered why the shutter did not fire with no film in the film bag. This is a 100% mechanical camera, and I am so impressed.
Mate. You have no idea how much he’s helped. Thank you.
Bless u man. Opened this on Christmas hyped to learn how it works and I came across this problem with the shutter. Spent maybe an hour stressing and almost deciding I would have to send it in and ask for help but your help fixed it immediately 🙌
THANK YOU! I JUST BOUGHT MY MAMIYA RB67 AND I WAS LIKE, WTF!!! WATCHED THIS AND INSTANTLY FIRED! GREAT SIMPLE BUT VERY EFFECTIVE VIDEO!!! SUBBED!
Thank you!!! I could NOT understand why the mirror would just lock up on me. So then I took the lens off and manually cocked the leaf shutter and got it stuck. I had NO idea you had to be in double-exposure mode without film. Not only did that release my shutter in the lens, but it showed me my camera was indeed working correctly. I really appreciate this!!
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback.
Thank god for this video thought I’d gotten a broken one
Dude, I only had to read your video description to figure out what was going on with my camera. Had no idea about the multiple exposure lever needing to be on. Crisis averted! Many thanks!
Thanks a lot!! I was sweating there for 15 minutes before watching this!!
one other point of interest, THIS camera and the Bronica ETR/SQ/GS are the ONLY ones you can add a lens ad-hock, no order!, as the turning of the rewind lever/crank re-syncs the system, so if the pins don't align the cocking system does it for you. Hasselblad V, PENTAX67's use a viewfinder connection (Pentax) or the shutter actuation/cocking linkage which MUST be put into a cocked condition FIRST before assembly, that way no jams occur.
I hereby nominatie you for the nobelprice for...whatever. Thank you sooo much. I was about to return it, haha. Works like a charm now.
Just got my RB67 as well. Thanks for this video tutorial--VERY HELPFUL!
Awesome! I posted it hoping I could help someone encountering the same problem. Thanks for letting me know. :)
Just got the RZ67. This helped a lot! Thank you!
Good job on this tutorial my man I shoot rolleiflex myself. Always good to stumble on a new analog Channel that knows their stuff. Respect
Man, I wish the metering prisms weren't so expensive. It makes the camera look like a dinosaur in a motorcycle gang. At least you can get the non-metering ones. Great video BTW!
Thanks!
Oh damn. Just twist... 🤦🤦🤦
Thank you sir.
Great tips there! let me add that removing/attaching the Back and Rotating Back are both easier to do, if the camera is standing on the lens on a flat safe surface, then you have both hands free. Too many times have I seen peeps fiddle with it in the air - not an easy task.
Thank you first things worked my Mamiya rb67 S I got today huge Mamiya rb and press cameras with lenses.
Thank you for the info, I got mine working with step 2!
Thank you sooooo much. You saved my day!! Have just purchased a RZ67 Pro 2 and so curious to make my first shooting.
Thank you, this video cleared up my problems.
Thanks man - just. what I needed.
Very helpful, Thanks!!
Thank you very much!
it's work like charm
Thank you you helped me a lot
Very helpful thank you very much👍❤️
Awesome! Thanks!
OMG!! .. I was going nuts .. thank you!
Just got mine and this helped.
thank you you are a lifesaver!
Discovered one more thing that can cause the RB67 to not fire. My rotating back was rotated ever so slightly out of alignment and it wouldn’t fire. I finally spotted it and all was good. I guess it does this so your film is perfectly square to the camera body. Great feature but no one mentions this as something to check if your RB67 won’t fire.
awesome, thank you!
Thank you very much!!
Dude thank you so much!
Awesome thanks !
Omg ive had this camera for a year and this is the first time ive had this happen to me😂
Thank you! Dark slide in my case :-D
Thank you so much!!! I just got mine today and was getting frustrated, the film back switch was not in the correct position. I was worried I had a bad camera.
Thank you sooo much!!!!!
Awesome advise mate to be fair I was aware of these issues they’re very similar to my Bronica ETRSi. I was loaned an RB67 this weekend so spent time looking over things readin the manual practicing etc all seemed well so out for a shoot and to record the experience for my wee channel took the first shot then could not advance the film i tried all of the usual but nothing after a lot of head scratching and checking the camera I found a wee slider on the top of the film back so why not give it a slide as I did the red flag popped up in the film counter then I could wind on it went like this for the entire roll. The red flag is supposed to pop up after a shot to indicate the frame is exposed in my case I didn’t pop automatically I’m thinking it’s a fault on the back and the slider is a manual way to continue shooting. Have you ever heard of this issue and if anyone else has tried everything else and still can’t shoot maybe this will help. Thanks for the vid mate liked and subbed
Thank you for making this video! I got a film back that is jammed, it won't advance at all and it is stuck on "S". I was wondering if you had any advice on how to remedy this.
THANK YOU
Also as old as these cameras are, there are mechanical parts in the camera body itself (under the bottom cover) that get sticky due to old lubes. Some cleaning and very sparse lubrication clears these issues up. Sometimes the springs have popped off or are broken.
what a good guy are just got mine and was like uhhhhhhhhh
Thank you exactly the problem I had.......
If it is jammed, you can take a paper clip and remove a little covering on the front on the top right side. There is a hole where you stick the clip in and free it up. I never had to use that but check it out.
Love u bro
Hey man. I got a question! So do you have to flick back the double exposure thing every time you advance the film? Cheers
thanks!
I hope you are active and read this. I can get a RZII Pro with the 110 2.8 for cheap. Apparently there is a "problem" with the lens and it'll only fire with the cable release. Do you think they haven't checked it correctly and this could be a steal?
Hello, idk if you still have the camera, but I recently got it with the metered prism finder and I don’t know how to use it. Would be great if you could give a rundown on how to use the prism finder meter. 🙏🏽
Hi ! I saw your video and many more and still can't figure it out. My Mamiya rz67 doesn't fire even when everything is detached (just the body). I am not on M, my shutter is on 8 (tried different speed), the lock is on the white dot... do you have any idea ? Thank you so much
One of the best ways to to destroy an RB is to jab the cocking lever aggressively like you're doing.
I've got an issue where lately I load film in it, and after mounting the film back to the camera and advancing, it remains on 'S' and I can keep advancing until I roll the whole film in. And I have repeated that with backing paper 15 times with the exact same steps and sometimes it works others it doesn't. Sometimes the little pin that comes out when firing the shutter into the film back gets stuck open, but I really have no clue what could cause it. Because when it works, it works all the way through. When it doesn't, it thinks it's empty all the way through. Someone help!
#4 If the rotating back is twisted slightly you will not be able to fire the shutter.
+10 upvotes. I know this is an old comment but I could not for the life of me figure out the problem, as I was sure the camera was functional and had quadruple checked the other steps. Please try this before disassemblying your whole camera, the back seems to be even more meticulous than you’d expect.
Thank you for this comment.
Underrated comment🤦🏾♂️🙌🏾
i think that you saved me, again.
What is the knob for on the prism finder? What is that prism finder called? Thanks
Mount it on a tripods and work around it safer and efficient. Thought he would drop something before video end
Thanks for that! Tried it and found the shutter doesn't fire when the rotating back attachment is on (with the film back off). Any idea of what could be wrong
If the rotating back attachment is connected but the the film carrier part of the back is off, then the shutter won't fire. As long as it fires with the film back on in the multiple exposure mode then your shutter is working fine.
Hey so I just got my rb67 pro s and I had a question: does the film counter advance from "s" if you don't have film in the back? Or is that a problem on my film back?
No, you have to have film in there for it to advance. I bet it works, but you need to put film in there to find out unfortunately.
Old Camera New FIlm thanks!
you forgot one thing, if the mirror up knob is set to 'M' the shutter is DISCONNECTED from the shutter button on the body, ONLY a cable release through the middle of the button will "fire" the shutter if the knob is on "M".
Turning the Knob back to N / the red dot, will fire the shutter as well.
@@davidb4010 yes, but ONE warning, the R Z 67 the ZED! has a sleive to do the mirror-up, it 'arms' by screwing the release into it, if this doesn't retract all the way, the shutter function is not restored ( the sleive has a red line on it, showing "armed" condition)
the K\L lenses are the SAME, if the M_UP is active, the shutter won't fire, but THIS case, there is a helix on the sleeve, screw the cable all the way in, THEN TURN IN REVERSE direction, red line COVERED; ALSO the T , time exposure, will keep the shutter OPEN unless the B button is pressed, or a cable release is used inside it!, this closes the open shutter allowing it to be re-cocked!! (the manual says NOT to use the cocking Lever for this, the B button ONLY!)- the cocking lever is FINE to use on the SEKOR-C's though!
God bless you 😭😭😭
I have an rz67 and my winder is stuck, i can press the shutter button byt the winder is still stuck at the furthest back, even with the body only nothing works
Three fourths of the video frame is occupied by the table. Would have been a little better if the visuals that matter had been the prime focus in the frame. Thank you, anyway.. for the video.
Do you have any idea what to do if the actual shutter button is stuck? I can't press it down and I also can't switch it to lock mode. I've tried disassembling the whole camera and nothing worked.
This video shows what I did to fix mine. If it is still stuck then I am at a loss.
Hi, I solved the problem a while ago and it was really easy. Turns out, DHL completely wrecked the bottom plate of the camera during shipping, essentially bricking it! Got a full refund from the nice seller.
That's too bad.
god i love you
Mamiya calls it a revolving back.
My ProS body will fire the mirror with both lens and film magazine removed. I don't think the ProS supports the double exposure prevention the ProSD has.
What if the shutter button is sticky?
Sadly, I discovered when I try to fire with all the parts connected it never fires....not even with the rb67 body solo....I contacted my seller about this....not happy....bc is feels like something expensive...at least it's all mechanical
did you ever figure it out? having the same problem
@@diamondprincss02 I had to send it off to keh camera in Georgia...they fixed it...was about 200 to fix....call th er m on the phone during business hours. Good customer service
Loaded film, no prob. Now, I can't get the back *back* on the camera. The lock slides in the right place, but the chrome slides for the lock are blocking replacement of the back.
Any ideas anyone? A friend bought the same camera and is having the same issue. Thanks in advance.
Right above and below the darkslide on the rotating back attachment are small metal pins. If you push them in you should be able to move the slides.
Thank you so fucking much for this video because I just got my mamaiya delivered and I thought something was wrong.
Is it normal for your film advancement (the trigger on the film back) to be stuck?? Is it because I don’t have film in it yet??
I
Where is the lock up mirror lever? Thanks.
On the lens
My film back advance lever is stuck. How do you fix
Try releasing it with the small sliding button, just below the advance lever
I noticed a big chunk of lightseal material fall to the table when you removed the rotating adapter. gert the whole camera done, or else!!
I had to watch it to see what you were talk lol. You are right!! Are you a DIY camera repair guy or is there someone you trust enough to recommend?
*angrily removes darkslide*
Im a freakin idiot omgggg.... I spent so much money on film stocks just to shoot exposures with my dark slider In.
Bullshit😂 the camera is actually in normal condition. it does not stuck at all
Thank you, this video cleared up my problems.
