    It's just a generic wire.. I purchased it at the hardware store, not the craft store. It's 20 gauge galvanized steel wire. But you could just open up some non tarnish paper clips, they are made from hardened wire, and are great to use for jump rings.

    This really helps. I bought a package of already made jump rings from the store and they were all overlapping. Very hard for a beginner. This seems so much easier.

    At the hardware store, or home improvement store.. it's called galvanized steel wire. (It's also hypoallergenic if you want to use if for ear wires, and it is steel, and does not contain nickel, which is the most common allergen in wire.)

  • @Hectanooga1
    @Hectanooga1  11 лет назад

    20 gauge steel wire, you can buy it at the hardware store. You could open paper clips, and use those as well.

    You can use beading wire, as long as it is at least 20 gauge. Any wire that is strong enough to keep it's shape would be fine for making jump rings.
    If you are using a wire that is fine, and won't be strong enough to maintain the round shape, you can always use the wrap links to join beads in bracelets and necklaces. There are examples of those in the bracelet tutorial on my channel, Hectanooga1

    Hi! I'm so glad I found this tutorial after the extremely frustrating time I've had this evening TRYING to make "make work" chain. ggrrr!!
    I found a written tut with pics and everything and it's confirmed - I'm a complete IDIOT!! It's so easy it's stupid. 20 gauge copper wire, 1" long. make a loop on both ends, then bend in half. I could choke the person who had written these instructions. Anyway, I can't make this chain so I came to your channel and found the figure of eight type chain. If I am unable to do this, I'm giving up crafting and art all together!
    So now I've found your refreshingly easy jump ring tut and I'm ecstatic!! I'm attempting my hand at paper beads. (Yes, I know, been around forever, but I'm always a day late and a dollar short :-)) After pricing these at Michael's, heck yeah!! Now I can attach my beads to something?
    I'm frequently low on funds, so to save money, I thought to make my own chain for bracelets for my beads. I'm thinking these would make great gifts. I've even deluded myself into thinking I just might be able to sell my beads!! LOL!
    I realize this is 4 years old and I hope you read this, so I wanted to say thank you so much for the tutorial!! I'm looking for more chain tuts on your channel - boy you have a ton! This will have to wait as I need to get back to making beads. At least it's a craft I'm pretty half ass decent with? Maybe? ;-) Thanks again!
    Oh! I'm subscribed to your channel now as well.

      +Christina Furner-Webber Hi there Christina!! Thanks so much for your post! Loved reading it, and I'm happy to hear that you have found my channel... I have tons of bead tuts... beads made with : plastic grocery bags, fabric, ribbons, bathroom tissue, crepe paper, and of course paper!! Lots of other wire tuts too:
      clasps, chains, wire wrapped beads, finger rings, and of course, jump rings! Have fun watching my tutorials, and feel free to send in any pictures for my
      "Viewer Submissions" videos!! Have a fun day! Emi (Oh, and hopefully you clicked in the little "gear" icon beside the word "subscribed", so you will receive an email when I post new videos!!)

    Thank you so much for this video. Will this same technique work for an even stronger wire such as 18 gauge?

  • @Hectanooga1
    @Hectanooga1  11 лет назад

    You can buy galvanized stainless steel wire at the hardware store.. (and sometimes at the dollar store).. stainless steel is hypoallergenic. Galvanized stainless steel wire has been coated with zinc, which is a mineral, and non toxic. (I take it as a supplement with my calcium.)
    It is quite inexpensive. I have severely allergic ears, and this wire does not affect me in any way. There is no lead, nor nickle (which is what most people are allergic to), in stainless steel wire.

  • @Hectanooga1
    @Hectanooga1  11 лет назад

    Some paper clips are stronger than others... if you use one that is quite rigid, then yes.

  • @IziDoudou

      +Hectanooga1 - Crochet, Knitting, Jewelry, Crafts, Cooking Hello, I am so glad I found your site. One question, how do the jump rings stay closed? I have used them before when making different things, and they never are closed enough for the wire, or whatever to stay in the ring.
      Thanks.. Janet

    • @Hectanooga1
      @Hectanooga1  8 лет назад

      +jan cat If you need a non-breakable jump ring, it's best to use a double ring, where you have 2 loops (go around the round object 2 times), but that sometimes catches in things. Another connector to use instead of a jump ring is to make a figure 8 connector, where you have a loop on each item to be connected, and then the wire wraps around the center several times, although that is not always what is needed. Other than welding the join closed, I don't know of any other permanent way to do it.
