The Style of Indiana Jones

  • Indiana Jones is one of my favorite movie franchises and one I feel reached it's peak in it's third installment. Every man who sees Indiana Joes wants to be him - why wouldn't you?? He's cool, badass, women love him, and he gets the bad guy in the end. His charisma definitely comes from Harrison Ford and his rugged yet refined presence, undoubtedly honed while playing Han Solo. Still we can't discount the role his costume had in expressing what Indiana Jones is all about, it tells us about his character. Even before we ever see Indy on film, his silhouette is shown. A silhouette that is instantly recognizable to most: sporting his trademark fedora, leather jacket, and bullwhip, we know our hero before we even see him.
The garments Indiana Jones wears are as important to his character as the Harrison Ford is, and they all have their roots in Military clothing. Check out this video for my breakdown of the Indiana Jones style.

Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

The Wested Leather Co. is the best place to get Indy's jacket. They (particularly Peter Botwright who recently passed) are the original makers of the 'Raiders' and 'Crusader' jackets. I do agree their prices seem low for such a jacket, but their shop focuses on Hollywood film attire, so they mass supply lots of products. Also keep in mind that leather probably does not cost much to buy before production, so selling jackets for outrageous prices is not their cup of tea. Each Indy jacket also comes with certification stating they are/were the original makers. I own a 'Raiders' in goatskin, and is worth every penny. Definitely buy a Wested!

You're very welcome! For the ultimate 'Raiders' jacket, go for shrunken lambskin. All of Wested's workers will tell you it is the best skin choice for that style as it is the most screen accurate. I also want to mention that there are multiple hat makers that are just as good as the Penman Hat Co. Steve Delk, who made hats for Indiana Jones IV, is a great maker. He also taught millinery to a gentleman named David Garrison who makes his own Indiana Jones, Humphrey Bogart, and Alan Ladd fedoras. I happen to own one of his 'Raiders' fedoras and I personally think he gives a much better screen representation than other vendors.

Trent Ryan Hello Trent, it's quite ironic that I found and read this post of yours. It was within the last three hours that I decided on a Wested Raiders in goat. Something else about Wested not mentioned here is that they do make to measure, which mine will be. U.S. Wings does not offer this option and as a result... I have a G-1 that is a size small but comes down about 4 inches past my pants pockets. I had to have the sleeves altered as well because they were too long. All measurements are taken and next month I'll order my custom jacket.

My dad was super into Indiana Jones stuff before I was born. He talked with the guy who made the hat (who is apparently a lvl 10. douchebag), knows about the techniques for aging, aged the same jacket, got the same Allen Edmond boots and of course aged them. Whole 9 yards. Not to mention having a very close replica of the iconic hat made.

  • @TogetherinParis

I told Stevie to use Army Surplus to save money on costuming. Stevie Spielberg was certainly a genius, but he was a cheap one. The real bag that I was trying to describe was the one used by Captain Miller/Mueller in Saving Private Ryan which was the original one. It's a US Army light machine gun ammo bag. I noticed that they did not secure the canvas straps properly at the top because it flops around a lot on poor old Captain Miller whenever they displaced. They sewed up the hole and covered over the BSA I put on it. I also provided the two canteens for Miller's character, my address was once scratched onto them, and they fixed a hole in one of the canteens, too.
The Indiana Jone fedora (with "B.C." in the back for Bob Clinton, President Clinton's uncle) was a hat Bill Clinton wore in Russia where he blew up an ammunition train with a trick he'd learned from Stalag 13 (the movie not the TV show). The whip was also Clintons because they would let him carry a whip around with him but not a pistol. Clinton was a real gun nut and would have preferred to stay armed in Red Russia.
I supplied the originally canvas belt with the smooth metal belt buckle and the original leather jacket. My father had bought the Army Surplus jacket in 1947 from the biggest Army Navy store in Baltimore, MD which was famous at the time. My mom put my name in one of the sleeves. The top snap was broken. There was knitted sleeve ends on it, but they were a little ratty in '72 when I gave it to Stevie along with the other junk.

Awesome video. Also, VERY true about combining too many things. I was in a hurry leaving the office to grab something to eat. It started raining so I grabbed my Orvis Fedora style and we ran out. I totally forgot I had on my Cockpit USA Oil Driller, which looks a lot like the Indy jacket. Normally, I would never intentionally combine the two...but I did. The dude behind the counter in the prep area started whistling the Indiana Jones theme song. I was like, ok, nice, really nice. My wife was cracking up. Note to wife: A little heads up would have been nice...."honey, don't forget your bullwhip." lol

I've been to many Indy events where the outfits are brand new, creases in the pants, pressed shirts, boots are shined and pristine, hats look right off the store shelf, bag straps are in perfect shape - all wrong. You have to age it, distress it, or wash and thrash the heck out the clothing to get "the look". The pants are 100 percent wool with a military hem. Nothing else drapes like real wool. The first hat was found at Herbert Johnsons by Lucas and Kassan, the producers. It was called the "Poet" and was originally designed in the late 1800's for the scholars at Cambridge College in England. When Temple of Doom came out Herbert Johnson had lost the molds for the "Poet" and tried to duplicate it for the movie and failed miserably. When Last Crusade came out they managed to create a similar hat to the Poet but it was not as tall or wide brimmed. So for Crystal Skull they went to Marc Kitter of Adventurebilt, with Steve Delk. Steve created the hat for Crystal Skull and Herbert Johnson's had absolutely nothing to do with the creation of that hat. So Herbert Johnson's did NOT make all the hats for the Raiders series.

    • @District.24

I also own two Wested jackets and one Tony Nowak. I think Indy's original pants were called officer pink. The colors of all his clothing items changes from VHS, DVD to old or new TVs or laptops.

The gray hat scene occurs on a seaplane, not a train. Hence the term seaplane gray that sometimes crops up in regards to the color.
It is not until Kingdom of the Crystal Skull that a grey hat reappears, and it does indeed reappear while Indy is on a train. Is not the same color gray though, it is a much lighter color.

For hats another suggestion as well: people might look at Screencapped Hats and Leather on Facebook. You can contact the hat maker personally and get a beaver or rabbit hat in the style of any of the movies, or even any scene if you want.
The maker is an Indy fanatic, and the products are less costly than most vendor, yet the materials are pretty the same.
Currently I just own a Raiders in beaver, but I'm considering getting another one in rabbit, as well.

So for anyone looking for a pretty good bullwhip for a relatively decent I recommend the Todd's costumes one. I personally have the 8 foot one from their and it's held up pretty well so far in the time I've had it. Not only do I use it for my Indiana Jones cosplay but I have a practical use for it as well with driving cattle. I've only had it for a year so far so I can't speak for it's long term use yet and I'm aware that their are possibly better options out there but this is my first bullwhip and I'm purely speaking from personal experience

I started buying costume pieces back in 98. It was the first thing I researched when I was finally online. Back then, i was able to get almost every piece of the costume from the same folks/companies that made them for Harrison. Most profound, probably, is that I ordered my Herbert Johnson hat from Richard Swales himself. Talked to him on the phone. He is the same man who cut and shaped the hat for Harrison. It's not terribly accurate, but it most looks like the "Last Crusade" hat. But I'll be damned if I was to have it rebashed. I mean, I got it from the man himself. It stays in it's box in my closet now.

I have Indy and A2 jackets from both Wested and US Wings. The stock items at Wested are not made in England, but imported, maybe from Pakistan, and but all Wested jackets are made of Full Grain Leather (although they are labelled as Genuine Leather). The custom made jackets are made in England, but cheaper than the US's, maybe due to cheaper labor cost in England.
The same with US Wings, the imported items are cheap, but the US made ones are very expensive, but the quality is the same. All US Wings jackets are made of Full Grain Leather (also labelled as Genuine Leather).

Akubra(Aussie hat company) makes a "adventurer" line of australian Fedora type hats. They have the tall crown and wide brim. These hats are in fact made to pretty much the exact same dimensions of the Indy hat. The only difference is that it's somewhat more rounded on the very top of the hat but that's about it. I've never seen these hats go for more than $200.

My understanding was that his jacket was based off of the military issue G8 which didn't have the elastic cuffs or waistband. The replica goatskin jacket I bought from Banana Republic(before they turned into an expensive GAP store) in 1988 gave a brief history of this particular model. Btw, as a testament to the quality of the piece, I still have this jacket and it looks as new as the day I bought it! For the genuine article, Wested Leather Co LTD n England is the place to go. Though I agree that it's hard to believe how inexpensive their jackets are, I've read and seen nothing but positives about their products.

I dress like Indy without planning it. I like earth tones, so I almost always wear khaki or brown pants. Shirt is usually a button up, in various colors or patterns, but my preference is off white/tan. I have two brown leather jackets. One is a wool collared heavier one for cold weather, and the other is a lighter jacket for warmer weather. My boots are brown leather Boondockers (based off the 1941 US Marine boot, if my research is correct). They look similar to the Indy boots, and have additional arch support, which I need. My hat is the only thing that I actually planned to look like Indy's. It's one of the cheap crushable felt hats. If I where to spend hundreds of dollars on a hat, I would never wear it outside. Yes, I do get the occasional "Are you trying to be Indiana Jones?" question, but it's just how I like to dress.
