You start handing out $80 to one guy, then the locker room hears about Vince's generosity and next thing you know there are two dozen wrestlers with their hands out for some cash. Sounds harsh to deny a guy such a small amount, but when you run a business like WWF at the time, with the way word spread like wildfire and often exaggerated, I can sort of understand the logic behind it. I'm sure there were some other guys in the business he could have asked at the time who wouldn't have had that kind of potential problem.

Butch Reed said in a shoot interview that he didn't want the intercontinental title, he missed the booking and didn't show up,
mainly because he was too tired, the workload would've kept him away from his family and his ranch,
he was a working wrestler that lived for his family first.

I’m Bruce Reed little cousin, and Tony, Bruce’s Mom kept a picture of you and Bruce in her house. It was there for years. I’m telling you right now that Bruce had no idea that he was supposed to take the Intercontinental Championship. So, not Bruce’s fault. Bruce actually looked at Harley Race more as a mentor. We haven’t laid Bruce to rest yet, and I’m not going to allow lies to be told on him. I love my 12X Champion Big Cousin, not like you as a fan, no I love Bruce more as an Uncle. So, when you talk about the Natural Hacksaw Butch Reed make sure you have your facts straight.
