“That ain’t no Saba Simba...that’s Tony Atlas”- Rowdy Roddy Piper
Tony and Vince relationship seems like that of an abusive relationship. He keeps fucking Tony up and Tony keeps going back for more thinking it'll be different next time.🤔
I worked at the Hersheypark Arena at this time, where Saba Simba debuted. Hours before the event, Tony was practicing stepping in the ring with the mask and everything on.
Tony brought up good points on how Vince treats his talent. That's why he had major heat with the Ultimate Warrior because Jim was smart with his money and was prepared to live without wrestling and Vince hated him for it.
The Saba Simba gimmick got over and Vince didn't like it. smh
Yeah, lots of info on how WWE treats talent. Paul Orndorff could have altered his life for the better by doing the Rambo movie. Hogan does the Right Guard commercial, which gets shown during the Super Bowl. Roddy Piper and Terry Funk went and got their own movie deals. Tony uses his wrestling money to go to school, buy a home and invest in a gym.... CLICK.
On the other hand, I get where Vince is coming from. If some of these wrestlers become mega-superstars then any one of them can "write their own ticket" and ask for all sorts of money- which would effect WWE's bottom line.
Truth be told, that's why most guys hated the Warrior. From the beginning he treated the business as a job and not his passion, but he worked hard at his craft and putting on the best show for the fans. That's why Andre liked him. Brock Lesnar deals with the same crap today. He gets criticized relentlessly for only showing up a few times a year, however those same critics if they were offered the money that he is to do their jobs 10 nights a year they ain't gonna turn it down.
Vince brought Tony back just to bury him. smh
+Steve Smith Yep. Sounds like a Very Vince McMahon thing to do.
Yet, his Saba Simba run allowed him to get back to school and get a home, so at least Vince gave him a second chance at life if you look at the bigger picture.
It backfired though!! I would love to see the Tony Atlas biopic!!
I don't know if it happened or not, but I am surprised if there wasn't a storyline involving Saba Simba and Kamala, working as allies or adversaries. Racial stereotypes seems to be a theme in pro wrestling.
@@jonathanturbide2232 No that gimmick was made to humiliate him, nothing more and nothing less . Vince being a marketing genius I don’t know why he didn’t try to market black wrestlers in a much positive light .Why not bring him back as Mr. USA again ? Anything else was on Tony’s on accord .
i wanted saba simba to tag with kamala
In OTHER WORDS Vince signed him aaand kept him SIGNED to keep WCW and Ole A from bringin him in. Typical Vince. Does it all the time, truth 👊. Love ya Tony 👍
Love the show with Tony can watch it all day
Roddy Piper reaction to Saba Simba was funny as hell.
These are amazing. I could watch Tony all day. Phenomenal series, dude. I'd love to see you talk to other retired wrestlers from that era as well-- Superstar Billy Graham, Muraco, Backlund, Hulkster... how cool would it be to talk to some jobbers, too? Steve Lombardi, Danny Davis, REFS-- no one ever talks to the REFS! Great show.
Thanks Sandy. Check out the archives, there's variety beyond Tony even though he's turned into a series regular. Will likely have Danny with us in 2019. Ax, Smash and Dutch Mantell/Zeb Colter will be taping with us next month.
Awesome!!!@@bostonwrestlingcom
i could imagine vince " look at him saba simba pal"
TA is a good dude
Great interview Tony Cartersville Georgia

Critter crisp remember whenyouwasgeorigachamp
Tony last time I seen you was 82 and the projects Wilson Park
I remember Tony as the black Superman.
thanks dan!
Oh I got no probs with the Gimmick, the character. I mean hey it was cool. U were on TV and major cards 👍👍. BUT ya know once he wasn’t worried aboot WCW gettin Tony. He dropped him 🤔🤔. That’s the PROB.
I was 8 and the second Saba Simba came out I knew it was Tony. That gimmick was to bury you.
yeah. But as kids…. most of us liked Saba Simba. It was a fun gimmick. Just look at the kids dancing in the audience
@@jrsmith1998 I guess, in my opinion you don't give a guy with that size and strength a gimmick like that. He had little personality, was too big to take great bumps and never seemed into it at all. They had to know it wouldn't work IMO.
Keeping it real with Mr USA Tony Atlas my favorite wrestler from back in the day he was great
I can appreciate him not liking it. But I honestly love those elaborate characters. It should have been done better, but for my money, Saba Simba looked fantastic.
Rocky Johnson said the Wild Samoans would bump for him but not Tony! Because he was family and Tony wasn't.
Tony was Strong enough to Bump them both
Sika walked to the police station in Puerto Rico with Tony so he wouldn't get killed when he told them what happened to Brody.
Then how explain seka back him up in Puerto Rico during Brody murder. No body would step up exept seka. N savio Vega.
Tony Atlas vs Rocky Maivia would have been good.
21:41 - Katy, bar the door!
Didn’t Hogan copied Superstar Billy Graham?
very neat (as well as sad) to hear those various stories.
The best way to describe his career was too much too soon
The Muhammad Hassan thing was legit out of WWE's hands, unfortunately, so it's unfair to throw the blame on Vince. SmackDown was taped on Tuesday and finalized on Wednesday. The London attack happened on Thursday morning, and UPN made the decision that day to go ahead and air the show with a warning. Sponsors were PISSED, threatened to pull their adverts, and UPN pinned the blame on WWE, so WWE had no choice but to "kill" the character, which they did two weeks later at SummerSlam. And they didn't try to cut off Undertaker's head, that's ridiculous. They just stomped him to the ground and Hassan got a few shots in.
Hey do you just show up to the taping or do I have to call or contact someone?
Would appreciate an email bw@bostonwrestling.com telling us how many will be with you so we can have the proper amount of chairs set up.
@@bostonwrestlingcom also any age restrictions just curious

Tony's math isn't adding up lol the rocks mom was 23 when she had him.
Tony do you have a daughter around about 40
probably.
Tony do you have a daughter about 40 please comment back
Lol you scared the crap out of Tony about the Muslim thing lmfao wooo wooo wooo
Also piper killed the gimmick when he you yell "thats Tony atlas" commentating the TV matches.
43:48-43:51 Tony I hope your joking
Tony Atlas talking about somebody using drugs
whats your point?????
Hogan lied about the grill. Hogan was so jealous that he tried to sell a grill to out-compete Forman and failed.
Hogan lied about everything
@raymondtipton7243 yea, I heard about that. I'm not suprised.
Hogan was a super star billy Graham copy that was better
Not so good an interviewer here but then I get the dry Boston wit. Atlas is interesting and willing to divulge much. A little hard to understand him maybe it’s me but yes he’s a fountain of back stories and the
Man seems to have a salt of the earth character.
He usually has a massive dip of chewing tobacco in
The Hulk Hogan grill would have flopped!! 😂😂😂 He does not have anywhere near the charm or charisma of Big George!!
What was he going to do, yell through the whole infomercial?
"Well, you know Brother, the fat doesn't stay on your food with this grill!! It just rolls right off for all the Hulkamaniacs out there!!"
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I would wonder how a Jim Ross grill would have done. He does seem to know quite a bit of grilling, and would love to see a conversation about good ol' JR and George Foreman on that topic as well as sports in general. I think Flintstones vitamins might be a more appropriate thing for Hogan to endorse, or maybe some gym franchise, since he was talking say your prayers, take your vitamins and training. Since there is probably no big money endorsements for him in terms of religion, perhaps he could earn money endorsing vitamins and gyms, even though that may prove difficult in a pandemic and lockdowns being in effect.
@@pbanik In the 80s Hulk Hogan would have KILLED with a line of Hulkamaniac children's vitamins!!
@@davidmcknight2788 Would Vince allow it?, considering how greedy he is, since actors/athletes from other industries are allowed to have endorsement deals outside of their primary employer, or would he have said no, unless it was manufactured by the WWF? Maybe WWWF/WWF/WWE PEDs for those who use them might be another endorsement, since Hogan took them, and maybe McMahon still does. There are plenty of athletes who still do, amateur and professional, so the market is there.
Tony atlas has taken alot of chair shots I think
He's battled drug addiction for years.
@@IAmNeomic yes that correct
Tony blames everybody else for everything. All he ever did is body slam people and laugh like a jackass. He is the ultimate back seat driver.
Yet you spend your time watching videos about him
@@Cincinnatus1869 not directly. Another long video I watched did an expose of him. In his defense, he is often portrayed as being stupid, but he is not stupid at all.
