When it comes to getting a call from Vince while he was homeless, Tony Atlas talked about this on the Boston Wrestling MWF channel. He said the police hunted him down, not to arrest him, but to tell him that Vince wanted to get a hold of him.

Tony Atlas said, at this point, he had finally kicked his drug addiction but his reputation and finances were still in tatters. Vince had no plans or interest in him, but hired him to help him back onto his feet and show other promoters that they could hire him again.

    • @medmar76

@Greg Bailey, Tony got the last laugh. He was giving half of his money to the woman who took him in, and who he'd eventually marry, and she hung onto the money and gave it back to him so he could become a personal trainer, and when he was brought back in the early 2000's for ECW, he saved that money and bought a house with it.

He was there. Rick "the Model" Martel eliminated him. They both went over the top rope but Martel pulled himself back inside the ring. That's where Piper had to feverishly explain, on commentary, that you had to clear the top rope and hit the floor to be officially eliminated.

I know that Tony said that Vince was contacting local-promotions to look for him, but I could have sworn that he said that the police actually recognized-him and told the woman he was staying with that got him off the streets (whom he later married) that Vince had been inquiring about him.

Tony Atlas Drew well in the territories. If you can find some of his old Memphis tapes etc the guy was built like a human freaking He-Man figure. there's a match of him against Kamala and he is almost as big as Kamala and solid muscle. Dude was fucking jacked and on all the steroids.
He wasn't a big draw for WWE/F or WCW, but he did really well in a lot of the Southern territories.I remember him mentioning in an interview once he even had guys who were carrying clan memberships in thier wallets giving him a free ride to the next town because they wanted to talk him into working with them on the trip. As much as they may have hated black people, they liked Green money in their wallet even better.

He was a big draw in the early 80s in various territories. He actually pinned a heel Hulk Hogan cleanly in 1981. Hogan would not lose again until his match with Warrior in 1990.

Conrad totally lets Bruce off the hook by avoiding the obvious question about who came up with this racist ass gimmick and why. The fact is VKM came up with it and Bruce was too much of a butt sniffer to object, and Tony was a bit of an ass himself for going along with it. But why talk about the gimmick like it just so happened to randomly pop up from nowhere? Except to conveniently avoid anything that would paint WWE in a bad light.
