Because from a business perspective the promoters didn't think the predominantly white fanbase (the US was 90% white in those days) would want to see black guys over their white stars, so they paid the white wrestlers more because they had more perceived value.

I was fortunate enough to spend 3 years of my life from 1986 to 1989 living in Bethlehem Pennsylvania where Rocky Johnson and his family resided we spent a lot of time together at a gym that I was managing and also a promoter for a natural bodybuilding show called (BAD) bodybuilders against drugs. Rocky and I had a few business ventures that would correlate with some of the antics that Tony Atlas talked about especially the racism that black athletes and wrestlers had to endure during that time. His impact in our area was legendary need I say more . Dwayne was his pride and joy he was the star of his high school football team where he earned a full scholarship from the University of Miami which eventually uprooting Rocky to Florida where he finished out his life. RIP love you my brother.

The interviewer seems to be to you ng to understand how things were during early wrestling. He doesnt know who could have been a main event guy AND why! • @williamsmith1803

I think he was being truthful before Rocky died. I think he stopped talking about beating him up out of respect for the dead. Think about how religious Tony is. Tony is telling the truth about money.I spoke with Giant Kamala and he wrestled The undertaker and he saw the paychecks on Pat Patterson's desk.Undertaker was paid 500,000,00 for his match against Kamala and Kamala check was for 13,000,00 for the same match against each other at SummerSlam. That is a big difference in pay for the same match. Very unfair payoff from Vince. But true, Color has a lot to do with everything in wrestling.

However Sr and Wahoo had a big blowout over payoffs when Wahoo worked in WWWF in early 60s. Wahoo refused to go so they made Scarpa an indian. Imo he SUCKED. Can't figure out why he was so over. He couldn't work, TERRIBLE on the mic and every match was the same.

What the hell is wrong with that guy let Tony talk he lived it and experience the racism in that time smh lol.. Now this is no insult to Tony but he just admitted which is something I've thought about... he did what ever he had to do for that paycheck and that's why as a black wrestler in those days he was around longer then Rocky... like think about it could you see Rocky Jonson coming back to WWF changing his ring name to Saba Simba and dancing around the ring with a spare in his hand lmao now as a kid I liked that character and still do but as a man in this era I can see why it could be considered racist today.. but I can also understand for Tony it was about survival especially when he was homeless. But i respect Rocky Jonson for standing his ground against unfair treatment because it paved the way for change in the wrestling business today.... It seems like what Tony is saying is going right over this dudes head lol or he's just challenging Tony's story's to make a interesting debate. But in my opinion... if Rocky Jonson was in this era he would of been a bigger star and got the push and money he deserved he had the look and talent
