Lars is the right drummer for Metallica. Being an amazing technician or really flashy might impress other drummers but he does what best serves the songs, which is a skill in itself. Kurt Cobain was not a technically skilled guitarist but he played in ways that brought his songs alive, which isn’t something that the best shredders can necessarily do. There’s so much more to being a musician than the notes you play. For example, people love to rag on Ringo Starr but the Beatles’ music would not have been improved by having Neal Pearl-level drumming.

You can have Lars on one hand playing Sad But True or any other big hit or thrash classic from the band just fine, or you’ll have him struggling at something complex like an AJFA song, like his infamous drum fill mistakes live 4 minutes into “The Frayed Ends Of Sanity” which has been memed just like St Anger.
I’m not surprised though because AJFA is definitely the most difficult Metallica album Drumwise.

    • @johnchedsey1306
      @johnchedsey1306 Месяц назад +3

In 1989 or so, most magazine reader polls listed Lars as "the best drummer" in metal, though clearly he never really was. But he was in the biggest, baddest band of the time. I agree he's fine enough, but metal has always had much better drummers (Gene Hoglan immediately jumps to mind). I also would argue Lars was influential because he was doing the double bass stuff pretty early on in thrash's existence.

    I'm 80th
I can see the same kind of perspective that's applied to many other former pure metalcore bands or bands that had their metalcore phases. You hear that with Bring Me The Horizon as well.
Yeah that's a big stretch of a claim for anyone to say that Mushroomhead is above or on par with Slipknot. Mushroomhead used to have been a mostly underground group while Slipknot was aiming to be noticed, there was a difference. Slipknot got more recognition while Mushroomhead bathed away until one of their albums got noticed enough to where they saw some shine.
Megadeth stopped being a contender of the Big Four right around after the 90s, their consistency in the creative department was fluctuating wildly throughout the 2000s and 2010s. It's no surprise anymore why people nowadays have second thoughts on Megadeth being a part of the Big Four.
I think that's someone pulling your chain, Luke, with this one. They knew of all of the videos and comments you've made of this band so they went for the throat here.
I'm going to agree as well on the In This Moment take, while I do think In This Moment has more in the tank, it's only looking like Blood is the only top-tier album because of so-so performance of albums after it. They can do better and god please stay away from covers if you can't do them.

I don't know if it counts as metal or rock or both, but my hot take (that i've seen get met with so much backlash so i tend to stay away from the fans.)
Avantasia. As much as i love the Metal Opera (parts 1 and 2) i rarely if ever actually go back and listen to those albums. I prefer everything that came afterwards because i feel like the Lost in Space EP and Scarecrow album is where Avantasia really found its identity. I especially love the Ghostlights, Moonglow, and Moonflower Society albums.
I cannot stress enough that i don't think Metal Opera is bad, heck the title alone is what drew me to listen to it in the first place. It's just not the best work. Tobias Sammet himself has even said something similar to what i've said about preferring the later stuff and he tends to get allot of pushback for saying it and it does get heated.

You know, I started pondering the "Who is the least interesting/talented" of the Big Four, and I narrowed it down to two bands, those being Anthrax and Megadeth. But, like you said, over the 25 years or so, the work from Megadeth has gotten much worse as the band changes musical chairs around Dave. Sure, they had Rust in Peace in everything before it and, even Youthanasia in 1994 was good, but in my mind, Anthrax actually got better with age. We've Come for You All, released in 2003, was solid, but with the band removing Bush and going back to Belladonna, they just played more loose, free, and had more fun with 2011's Worship Music and 2016's For All Kings.
And, yes, definitely agreed that Reverence and Darker Still get overrhated by "fans" of the band and the genre in general. I actually rather liked Reverence upon its release, thought it was a good follow-up to Ire, although it did take me a bit to get into Darker Still, but I enjoyed it.
F5DP is the Taylor Swift of Metal...there, I said it. 😂🤣
PM5K absolutely deserved better, as Spider moved away from the Nu-Metal and Sc-Fi look and influence and started adding punk rock, hard rock, and synth/new wave inspirations to his ever-changing band.
Top three Deftones albums to me are Diamond Eyes, Koi No Yokan, and, yes, White Pony. Two albums you will NEVER see there are the self-titled and Gore.

His performances were always pretty solid, he made at least two pretty good albums with them (Headless Cross and Tyr, I admit Eternal Ídolo was kinda ass) and he wasn't the main problem the band had during those years. People just like to point fingers and blame one guy rather than look at the fact the band had been suffering from revolving door syndrome for a decade at that point.

I just realized Anthrax is the only band of the big 4 I still pay close attention to. They were definitely my favorite as they were the first I heard back in 1988 or so. No disrespect to Slayer of course. Metallica and Megadeth just became mostly irrelevant to me at a certain point.
Oh, I do want to mention I'm the over 50 guy who still goes to shows, gets up front and always tries to give new material a fair shake. There's too much good stuff out there to stick to my teenage favorites for the rest of my life!

I saw Deftones live at Summer Sanitarium back in the day, and they rank amongst the worst live performances I’ve ever seen, and that was in a concert with Limp Bizkit in the line up. It was lifeless, mixed awfully, and ultimately mostly forgettable. It was so bad I took their songs off my playlist (well the early 2000’s equivalent anyway).

Deftones can be quite hit and miss live. The sound mixing for Chino is always difficult I believe. I've seen them be great also though.

When I was in HS you either liked Metallica or you liked Megadeth. You weren't allowed to like both without ridicule. So, as a Megadeth hater, I agree they're over-rated.

Was never really a big Powerman 5000 fan at all tbh. I liked Worlds Collide but not much else. The song they did for Shadow the Hedgehog, “Almost Dead”, is legitimately their worst by a country mile and is generally considered the worst Sonic Vocal track.

Megadeth is my least favourite of the Big 4. Slayer is probably my favourite, with classic Metallica not far behind, but even Slayer has a couple stinkers. I like the new Metallica stuff but it's too bloated for regular listening. The last 2 Anthrax albums were the best last 2 releases from all 4 bands. I'm not a fan of the last 4 Megadeth albums, Dystopia being the best. It might be to his detriment that Dave is the most prolific.

Megadeth is the world of big four?? WTF? Not Anthrax?? Really?? Also, dystopia, and the sick, the dying and the dead are not in the same level as their past albums, but are good THRASH albums.. So, you tell me , from the big four of THRASH metal, which band STILL plays thrash ?? Just take a look in Metallica's last albums, they are not playing thrash anymore, and Anthrax?? They haven't release a descent album in the past twenty years.. So your hot take is pointless. Megadeth keeps thrash alive, clearly!
