    Worked on the 117 at TTR 37thTFW! The jet was NOT a spotless black jet! Ram panels and butter and all the normal leaks etc were the same on the black jet as any other! The difference was it wasn’t contrasted as much. Man when I built model back in the 80s no way did we have all these extra parts for cockpits etc. I honestly can’t believe how a kit is so expensive these days! Great job!

      There are a couple of thing you could mention. The first is that they are trying to set up a London club and need volunteers to run once a month 3 hours model making sessions.they have a logo on their FB page. Could you please include it
      The second is that it is not just for Autism suffers but their carers as well.

    Great build.. I hope you don't get too worried about the criticism.. I don't agree with some of your touches, yet I really appreciate you sharing YOUR build process and not trying to appease everyone in the comments.. Everyone doesn't have to agree on everything the way everything is done, yet everyone should agree that it's a great job and even better a big thanks for sharing... A lot can be learned and gained from watching someone else work... Looking forward to more videos!

    I feel your pain with the gloss coat sanding. I've yet to get a consistent smooth high gloss finish. Thankfully, I like to sand my decals anyway to get rid of the edges, so I've learned to just take sanding/polishing of the gloss coat as part of the process.

    Not related to this particular model or video....do you have a video of your setup? I'd love to see it! And if you, or anyone reading this, has a suggestion for a prebuilt portable spray booth, I'd love to hear them :) I'm thinking about making one by just attaching a clear storage bin to a 20 inch box fan, stick it in the window and call it done.

  • @imtoooldforthisstuff

    Nice build, one suggestion on the decal silvering. Waterslide decals love a smooth shiny surface. Shooting a coat of gloss clear over the black, applying the decals, sealing them with a second thin gloss coat and then dullcoat the whole thing (except your glass). That usually does away with decal silvering like that. Also, use Microsol or Microset to help decals conform to the surface, you get a much better result. I've been building models for 52 years, been competing in IMPS and other contests for about 40 years. That's just one of the tricks I learned along the way.

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for the advice. I do know this but it didn’t seem to work as well on this one for some reason. All of my other model videos have no slivering apart from when I started 3 years ago and didn’t know a thing about gloss coats etc

    • @imtoooldforthisstuff
      @imtoooldforthisstuff 4 года назад +1

      @@TheInnerNerd It may be the decals then. Sometimes I get that on an older Hasegawa kit made in the late 1980s or early 1990s. I use a lot of decal setting solution in that case. Some decals I will shoot with an acrylic clear with my airbrush to keep them from cracking. Have you ever used the Testors decal film and an inkjet printer? I have made my own nose art for some of my projects with that, if you have decals that are really shot that may be a good way to get a new sheet for an obsolete kit. That Aries cockpit is amazing, I got mine today for an F16I Sufa project for later this summer. Looks so much better than Verlinden.

    • @MrSeniorJR
      @MrSeniorJR 2 года назад

      Yeah….ummmm….decals need a SMOOTH surface to prevent silvering, not necessarily a glossy one. As evidenced in this build. If the surface isn’t smooth before glossing, you can still get silvering. Things have changed in your ‘52 years’…I don’t gloss before decals, and rarely, if ever, have had a decal silver on me….

    Very tricky bird to paint. Great work!
    I think weathering may have varied a great lot during service, as the special paint, which in association with special materials used at some parts provided about 15% of its radar signature attenuation, had to be carefully maintained ll times. The two occasions I saw the F-117 from a very close distance the black painting looked quite pristine, but those were in the US, not at battle fronts with heavy sorties schedules.

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  5 лет назад

      Thank you And yes I found this one particularly tricky due to the paint colour. The reference images ised were form active service aircraft so were much more bleached than those based on US soil. I like to pick each model based on getting a new challenge and this was definately a challenge!

    I honestly thought you were going overboard on the weathering, but that's been part of my problem, is not trusting the process. Looks really good. One thing I would have done differently though. The canopy & radar glass should have been smoke and amber. Heavier on the amber.

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  5 лет назад

      It's a heart stopping moment when you add all the oils to the paint job. But if you've clear coated well enough and everything is cured alls you have to do is use thinners to get off the oil. That's why they are so good to use because you have that imaginary "undo" button if it all goes wrong 😎

    Hi I'm very impressed with your attention to detail. I read all the comments criticizing your weathering techniques and I understand what you were trying to accomplish. I believe you did a marvelous job. I do have a question though. I bought the resin cockpit set you used and after several rounds of sanding and dry fitting I got it to fit snugly. The bottom of the resin however prevented me from closing the two haves of the plane because the roof of the front wheel well kept hitting the bottom of the resin cockpit. I sanded both until they were almost paper thin. I had to cut about 1.5 mm off the roof of the front wheel well to close the two fuselage halves. I then had to resort to cutting a hole for the main lading gear column up through the pilot seat in order for the landing gear to be the correct height. How did you do it?
    Also the trapeze system seems to lack the detail of some aftermarket sets I've seen in 1/48 and 1/32 scale. I gave up trying to figure out how to scratch build that. These aftermarket set are nicely detailed but have crappy instructions and are not always designed to fit into the model without a lot of work.
    Thanks again for a great video.

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  4 года назад

      Thank you for the kind words. I think some people are getting upset because it's not what they remember this aircraft to look like and havent seen the exact combination of images I was copying from as reference. But hey now they know what not to do!
      So yes, I agree that some aftermarket products are an incredible pain to fit into the model they were designed for - especially this one! I believe I had the same issue too. I think I remember taking off most of the roof from the gear bay and floor form the cockpit in order to make room them inside the fuselage. The cockpit floor was wafer thin by the time I had made enough space. So I don't have some magical answer for you unfortunately on that one.
      The Trapeze system I scratch built from a steel ball and inserted after making some room for it usign Styrene sheet. I basically made an L section for it to sit in which appeared to be more in scale and then dropped the ball in.

    Amazing job. I’ve never seen the benefit of a marbling coat however.

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  5 лет назад

      Thank you. It's a very useful technique but you have to be very careful when layering paint over the top. If you go too thick all of the marbelling underneath disappears. It helps a lot with more weathered aircraft as the tonal variances is far greater than spraying evenly over the model. It beats pre shading hand down for me

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  5 лет назад

      It's difficult to show solely on film but it does have an effect on making more tonal variances in the top coat of paint. There is a fine line between covering it enough and too much. Black aircraft are difficult to paint as the darkness kills pretty much everything you base it with. If you watch some of my other videos they will demonstrate the benefits of black basing and marbelling vs pre shading. My video on the F/A-18 will show it working better

      Hello and thank you. I would suggest you add a small amount of a medium grey. Going straight to a black to darker white is too much of a contrast and the white would just go grey. So if you want to do it gradually I would add a lighter grey and work darker until you have the tone

    I feel like you could have spiced up the engine intakes. When you look at the model they kind of disappear into the background. Otherwise, fantastic!

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  5 лет назад

      What would you suggest? I was thinking this too but was struggling on not ruining it. The real aircraft are rather subtle though too so doesn't open up many options...

      @@TheInnerNerd maybe the primary color of the model could have been a bit lighter so that you could have applied a dark wash to the intakes? Maybe even made the model with the intake covers on?

      I'm not sure as my Dremel has a numbered setting and bot RPM. I would guess around 800? It's on setting 18 of 22 so it's spinning pretty fast but not stressing the motor. I kind of used my ears to tune whether it was running fast enough
