Hey gang and welcome back to my return to modelling on RUclips! Hope you enjoy the video, there are a few glitches in the video for some unknown reason, so please don’t go out buying a new device (unless it’s a good to use excuse of course ;)) The model stand is available on my website www.theinnernerd.com and is completely made by me. The money made from it helps support the channel and keep the videos rolling, maybe even full-time one day… lets see. Otherwise, have a great Christmas/break if you don’t celebrate it and see you next year, Matt :)
Hello! I am looking to start a modeling RUclips channel as well as I have been building models for quite some time. I was wondering where you get your music for your videos! It sounds great and the model was fantastic.
Hello. I use Epidemic sound. It's a royalty free site with a monthly subscription. Drop me an email and I'll give you some more details :) the.inner.nerdyt@gmail.com
It has been a journey watching your videos over the years. You can see how your skills have developed into producing an extremely nice looking model. Also the production of the videos themselves have become very nicely done. Your commentary has added a great value to the educational aspects of the techniques you employ. The music is not overwhelming and just a nice background. The camera work and lighting are some of the best to be scene on the net for modeling videos. Even my 4 year old grandson enjoys your videos. Thank you for all your hard work that you put into them. I will be ordering one of your stands after the holidays to help support your channel.
Thank you for following me for so long! I think I’m roughly where I want to be in terms of the video making and it makes me happy to see that viewers can see the development also. I’m going to keep the calm and collected feel to the videos moving forward, ASMR meets modelling I guess haha. Thank you for the comment, this is what keeps me motivated to improve with each build, both in terms of the model, but it’s presentation too. Thanks again and have a great Christmas also :)
Couple of minor points regarding the harness straps: On ejection the pilot eventually separates from the seat, whilst generally finding it preferable to remain attached to the parachute. In the real thing this is achieved by a catch mechanism which essentially lets go of the harness at a determined point. The upshot is that the waist straps should be inside rather outside the seat pan. Similarly the leg restraint lines that you added are "plugged in" via the pilot's leg straps on boarding. The free ends were generally draped over the control column on exiting the aircraft. Typically, these lines are blue. Really enjoyed the video and various top modelling tips. Thanks! PS/ Some more rivet counting from me: * The engine access panels are actually the 4 *forward* of the wing and these hinge and prop independently. What you refer to as access panels are in fact an aerodynamic fairing. Iirc, the small panels on the fairing allow access to the lifting points. * The Pegasus engine is a topic in its own right (The Andrew Dow book is great if you're interested) and an important aspect is that it effectively has a separate front and rear section (that rotate internally in opposite directions). The front is the fan section and thus blows relatively cold air out of the forward nozzles. The rear is the exhaust of the turbine section and is MUCH hotter. Heat staining effects differ accordingly. * The engine has its own starter/aux power unit (minimising the need for ground support equipment) that intakes and exhausts through those rectangular ducts on the engine access panels. Left hand is exhaust, right (with the mesh) is the inlet. The exhaust one gets quite mucky. * The red line on the wing root highlights the ground fire extinguisher point for the hot end of the engine. If flames appear during start, the ground crew poke the end of their extinguisher lance into the hole in the vain hope of preventing an unscheduled barbeque (aka "business meeting" nowadays apparently). The red box should surround the hole.
Thanks for the insight. I would never have known this unless if have worked on the actual aircraft. I’m just a modeller and have no aviation background whatsoever, the art of modelling is what I like and there are always some inaccuracies with all my builds. Oh well… Thanks again and thanks for watching :)
Thank you and thanks for watching :) Best of luck with the Phantom, it looks an epic kit! I also have a Phantom on the horizon (when do I not haha) but it's the ZM F-4E kit. Can't wait!
Hi, a superb build! The colour texture and 'feel' of the GR3 has been captured beautifully. The only thing (and I hate to say it) is that the forward nozzles were powered from the 'cold' compressor side of the Pegasus engine, so was unaffected by hot efflux. They were always in normal paint finish. The 'hot' turbine fed rear nozzles were very much heat affected and so would have looked as your patina effect. The 'puffer ducts' were also fed from the hot side of the ECU and similarly coloured as the aft nozzles. Your representation certainly brought back many memories. Thank-you.
Thank you. The exhausts do say this in the instructions but almost all the images I used for reference showed metallic cans all round. This is one picture I used images.app.goo.gl/uLWH4NPpq9nxNP3g6
Fair comment - you should use source images when researching paint and finish. The front nozzles if not painted, would have been natural steel finish rather than having a heat burnished effect. My recollection of 4 Sqn Harrier GR3 aircraft from the early 80's were front nozzles painted green, aft turbine powered nozzles very heat burnished. In the hover, there is no cooling airflow, so things got very hot. The aft fuselage from the heat shields was very, very sooty and oily - often it was impossible to read the tail number - hence we relied on the fin and outrigger idents. The back third of the GR3 was probably the dirtiest airframe I ever worked on!
I have no idea why your channel came across my feed but I’m glad it did. I’m not a “modeler” but I surely appreciate fine crafting and art, which your skill set certainly foots the bill. I love what you do and enjoy your videos.
Hiya Iggy, i really hope you give model making a try it can be done for a very reasonable price and the satisfaction from a nicely finished kit is great.
@@eddiebirdie1545 I have to now😁. You really take this to the next level. I know I need to start simple and just stick to some basic principles. Which for me, having never done this, read instructions completely, separate parts and sand any residual connecting “tags”, go slowly. Amy other advice or recommended brands to start with?
Welcome back Nerd! Good to see you haven't lost your touch and this build is of the same excellent quality and attention to detail that we have all come to love and admire. Stay safe friend!
Hello and welcome back to the hobby. I have a video that you may find useful on the channel, it was my last upload before this. Hope it helps and thanks for watching :) ruclips.net/video/W3zDmJwpPcY/видео.html
I haven't bult a Kinetic kit yet but have one of their 1/48 Harriers in my stash. Seems like a good kit and I will revisit this video when I finally get around to doing it!
So glad you’re back my man. I’ve not had chance to watch this in full yet but I learn so much from your videos that I’ve been able to apply to improving my own models. Looking forward to more to come!
Remember these as a kid dogfighting over my house in Herefordshire, by far my favourite mark of Harrier so seeing you build this and the final reveal has bough back a lot of memories, so thank you, a truly excellent build.....oh and I've ordered your 'Third Hand' as I have got back into building aircraft recently after having a SciFi period of modelling.
Thanks Matt for the modelling stand featured in this video. I received it yesterday and put it together. It looks awesome and a fresh change from trying to balance my models on pots of paint. Simple but effective.
Thank you for your order! I hope it helps you with your modelling and keeping those works of art safely off the bench :) Thanks again and thanks for watching :)
I built the Hasegawa’s 1/72 as a “commission” and it was perhaps the most miserable modeling experience I’ve had as an adult. It gave me a great appreciation for the subject, though, and you’ve executed it tremendously!!
Ahh I've never done the 1/72 but that was soul destroying on many occasions. I feel your pain too, but you're right, modelling a subject shows many details otherwise missed when looking at something under 'normal' conditions. Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Fantastic work! One of the best harrier builds I’ve seen on YT. Very refreshing to see someone actually get the nozzles painted correctly. That’s one of the areas I consistently see many modellers get wrong, for some reason.
Don't think they are correct, front nozzles are cold so never burn tarnish. Just look at many pictures, they tend to get painted body colour. I have three Harriers on the go, all long term projects (like 3 years still not finished, biggest is the Hobby Boss, trying to animate all the moving parts).
@@flybobbie1449 Even that depends on the Harrier model. The original versions were unpainted metal. The newer Harriers (BAE/McDD) had the cold nozzles painted.
Thank you! I've been moving house and making an entirely new modelling studio but now I'm setup and will be working on models again. Thanks for watching :)
Thank you and thanks for watching. If you're returning to Modelling after a few years this video might be useful also ruclips.net/video/W3zDmJwpPcY/видео.html
Just getting back into scale modelling after a gap of 40 years, I've found your channel an inspiration, still got plenty of your uploaded content to watch through though. Thanks
Love this, best build I have seen in ages but then I am biased I love Harriers ever since working alongside them on carriers during my time in the Navy.
"The first and rather crap idea I had was . . ." Great channel, love your enthusiasm and the end product is beautiful mate. Keep up the good work and all the best.
Wow one of the best Harriers I've ever seen, you've given me the confidence to try loads of techniques from previous videos and I've found that i can do them with great results, thanks for advancing my own modelling it's really apreciated.👍
I was lucky when i was in Germany, i was at RAF Bruggen. My mates were at RAF Gutersloh and later RAF Laarbruch , i was with Tornado's and they were in the field with the Harriers. Love both aircraft and miss them dearly, great video and keep up the good work.
All harriers +spairs engines sold to USA for 2 million pounds yes you didn't misread that 2m why bc they wanted us to buy their F35s now revised order down to 48 aircraft from over 150 not enough to even fill 1 carrier and no cats on them what a waste of tax payers money should have just upgraded the harriers we had or made a super harrier

Great to see you back at the bench. I wanted to ask if you could give us a tour of you modeling bench/shop tour. Thanx for all of your videos, tips , tricks. I appreciate the level of quality you put into your builds
amazing build and I've learned a lot from this video! especially the orange skin effect has frustrated me for years! Thank you for explaining what can be done to resolve this.
Loved the video great to see you back. One thing to mention is that the front nozzles are the same colour as the surrounding camouflage as they only exhaust cold air from the engine. Looking forward to your next build.
Thank you and thanks for returning to watch! The exhausts do say this in the instructions but almost all the images I used for reference showed metallic cans all round. This is one picture I used images.app.goo.gl/uLWH4NPpq9nxNP3g6
It's the first time I heard you speak on your videos. Some great advice on weathering etc. Been following your videos for a while now starting from your first vids sill got a lot to watch.
I've been doing voiceovers now for the past few videos (the ones with black background thumbnails) and it's hopefully making the videos a little better to watch :) Thank you and thanks for watching, hope you enjoy my other content :)
Thank you, it's good to be back :) Thanks for the feedback too, I'll stick with the new features especially the unboxing on newer kits - always good to see what you're paying for! Thanks again :)
Just found your video's, They are excellent, I particularly like the fact you have a sense of humour in the video's and also show the odd mistake, we all make them. Excellent build and will now be looking at all the other video's on your channel. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for finding me :) I like to add some sarcasm into the mix as well my sometimes unthoughtful decision making. Model making is purely making it up as you go along (with a rough plan of course). Hope you enjoy my other stuff. Just so you know I only learned how to talk at the end of 2019 so videos before then aren't narrated. Thanks for watching :)
Ahh that's great! It's taken some time to develop that stand, chasing tolerances is not by idea of fun lol. It really does help on aircraft builds and there will be updated heads as time goes on :) Thank you and thanks for watching :)
*Insert holy music choir* Great to be back, normal service shall presume. Thanks for sticking with me and thanks for watching. Always good to have an audience lol
Specific-tip-comment: 4:45 onwards: I would recommend starting airbrushing with a simpler model to get a hang of the handling and maintenance first. My first Airbrush was a rather complex internal mixing airbrush and I promptly bend the finest needle rendering it inoperable (back in the 90's getting spare parts was a challenge). I bought a rather simple external mixing airbrush and it served me well for a long time, putting up with my inexperienced handling due to being more sturdy in construction. Later, when more experienced, I switched to a high-end airbrush.
Wraparound Camo isn't just a nightmare for modelers...Some of us who paint virtual aircraft for simulations hate it too! I went ahead and ordered the 3rd hand doohicky. Should be useful for my own modeling projects!
Haha it should be banned! And thank you for the order, I will get around to it shortly as I get through the orders :) Thank you and thanks for watching :)
General comment: Love your channel merch, mate! Definitely better than a mug. ^^ Overall you are a superb modeler and also feature the quintessential British humor and a thick accent - so I love it! Greetings from Germany
This video was so good i went out and brought the kit with the eduard gbu-16 and mask camo set and canopy mask set at hannats of london im gonna become a patron as well since your content is so good and helpful so i cant wait to see the behind the scenes ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Mr. Inner Nerd. Glad to see you back again. Been looking forward to this video for a long time. Hope you house move went a smooth as possible and you now have more bench time. Best wishes and a very Happy Christmas, Mark
Hello. Yes me too, the kit didn't disappoint! The house move went well thanks, back to normal model building output through next year (but now between DIY projects of course ;) Thanks for watching and Happy Christmas also!
I built Kinetic's 1/48 F-104J and honestly what a remarkable kit, think of the kinetic gold series as a mix of tamiya superb fits and the level of detail from a takom or trumpeter kit, outstanding molding and incredible detail for such a relatively cheap kit (100 cad for the f104j where i live, detail like this easily costs me 130)
Yes that was an amazing kit. I've done two 104's and want to make their F-104C in natural metal finish someday... The Gold series are good kits so far and I'm looking forward to what else Kinetic can make Gold Standard in future releases. Thanks for watching :)
Oh bollocks....just what I need, another Harrier! 🙄😉😆😂 Good thing that it's payd....payaway day soon! Have Kinetic's 1/48 Royal Navy Sea Harrier FRS.1 already, so might go for one of these next.... Beautiful work! 👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻
What a superb result. I'm not really a Harrier fan but I did enjoy following along. As has been said, the production is just right. As well as informative and inspirational, I actually found it a very calming and restful video - a bit like being in a modelling spa! In these troubled times I like to lose myself in modelling, which often means losing myself in someone else's build! I also note that you use several of products that I use - that Perfect Plastic Putty is a particular favourite of mine. Anyway, thanks for posting this and a Happy New Year (of modelling). 🙂
Thank you, I'm aiming for a calm and informative video approach. I'm glad that is working out for far :) Modelling should be a calm and safe space where we can get away from everything and focus only on the task in hand, even if it that is watching rather than doing lol. PPP is great filler, I have tried many and this is bar far the most user friendly. Thank you for watching and Happy New Year to you also :)
You're right the plain grey isn't the best looking on the Harrier. I think the Gr3 in this scheme is one of the best looking variants made. Thanks for watching:)
Really nice apart from underside. Very little soot if any, it was mostly engine oil and grease from just behind front wheel all the way back to main under carriage including inside under carriage bay. Sad to see you didn't put the 233 OCU badge on, spent many happy years on there.

* The engine access panels are actually the 4 *forward* of the wing and these hinge and prop independently.
I appreciate the level of quality you put into your builds
Thank you, it's good to be back :)
I have a workshop tour in this video ruclips.net/video/_S1c7FivAYM/видео.html
amazing build and I've learned a lot from this video! especially the orange skin effect has frustrated me for years! Thank you for explaining what can be done to resolve this.
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
BRILLIANT JOB MATE
Thank you, and thanks for watching :)
Welcome back bud! A storming return with another great build video, love the new format with a little bit of unboxing. Thanks for the contribution.
I just can’t believe watching this on the 9.1.23 this video is a year old
Great video ❤
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
You are very welcome
❤️
It's great your back & very nice subject for your return, bought it last year too, so very interested in how it builds up. Happy modelling
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Super looking results.
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Nice to see you back. Absolutely awesome build as usual. Your models just get better and better.
Thank you Mark and thanks for watching :)
Really good to see you back - looking forward to more from you! Nice work with the camouflage!
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Wow awesome I’ve been looking for such a stand for quite some time now..was about to model my own and print it but this saves me some trouble! Thanks
Ahh that's great! It's taken some time to develop that stand, chasing tolerances is not by idea of fun lol. It really does help on aircraft builds and there will be updated heads as time goes on :) Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Our lord and saviour has returned!
*Insert holy music choir* Great to be back, normal service shall presume. Thanks for sticking with me and thanks for watching. Always good to have an audience lol
Good stuff! Really smashing! Keep it up.
Thank you and thanks for watching! ;)
Always an excellent and informatively job done. You are the envy of us all.
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Specific-tip-comment:
4:45 onwards: I would recommend starting airbrushing with a simpler model to get a hang of the handling and maintenance first.
Wow! Amazing detail!
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Fantastic work and great to see you back. Look forward to seeing your next build. 😀
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Nice!... I have Airfix 1/48 GR3... we have a GR3 Harrier in a museum here in NZ.. thanks mate! 👍🇳🇿
Coolest plane in history
Excellent. I'll add that one to the list. Really nice return subject.
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Great build, awesome video and commentary! "Accuracy police" lol. Looking forward to the next one.
Thank you. Yes they're always out to get me! Thanks for watching :)
Nice build mate, welcome back!
Thanks, it's good to be back :) Thanks for watching :)
General comment:
Love your channel merch, mate! Definitely better than a mug. ^^
Overall you are a superb modeler and also feature the quintessential British humor and a thick accent - so I love it!
Greetings from Germany
Great looking harrier mate, nice to see you back 😁👌
Thanks Tim. Nice to be back on the Tube. More coming next year! Thanks for watching :)
Great video and description. Fantastic build!
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Good to see you back, awesome vid. I have the kinetic Sea Harrier in my somewhere in my stash
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Beautiful result!
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Love it mate, that's a beauty! I've been following the progress pic on Instagram, it's been well worth the wait! Good to see you back again man!
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
@@TheInnerNerd Yeah same, ill definitely be purchasing more from them, and np I love these videos keep up the good work man! o7
Lovely work
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
ШИКАРНЫЙ КАНАЛ! ОТЛИЧНЫЕ ВИДЕО!
Nicely done sir!
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
great video, with some really useful tips and directions - gonna try the paint pen idea for cockpit detailing - thank you.
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Oh bollocks....just what I need, another Harrier! 🙄😉😆😂
Good thing that it's payd....payaway day soon!
Have Kinetic's 1/48 Royal Navy Sea Harrier FRS.1 already, so might go for one of these next....
Beautiful work! 👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻
Everyone needs another Harrier! Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Thank for that build mate very interesting paint job brill. Steve U.K.
Thank you and thanks for watching:)
I was curious about this kit.
That's cool.
I got a lot of inspiration.
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Lovely job 😎
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
*Very nice build, very pleasant to follow, congrats!*
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Cracking build mate! Well done! 👍
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Nice model for beautiful plane.
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
You call that UK Wraparound scheme the modeler's nightmare, but I think it's a lot more attractive than the plain gray.
You're right the plain grey isn't the best looking on the Harrier. I think the Gr3 in this scheme is one of the best looking variants made. Thanks for watching:)
good idea for the soldering braid. Thanks.
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Excellent work, thanks
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Awesome work!!
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
yeah, awsome!!!!! may the sufa come!!!!
Thank you! SUFA is up next! It's gonna be in BEAST mode too. Thanks for watching :)
Really nice apart from underside. Very little soot if any, it was mostly engine oil and grease from just behind front wheel all the way back to main under carriage including inside under carriage bay. Sad to see you didn't put the 233 OCU badge on, spent many happy years on there.
