My brother is having a hard time breathing and we got it whistled. My uncle Milton was the whistle carrier. The whole powwow has danced because we are well known where I am from. He has a trache and doesn’t talk but it has healed him. If people are saying you’re not supposed to record a whistled song then they really need the healing and prayers sent to them. If you are a white person (not racist) then this was recorded for you. If you need the healing then you must get the healing from this video. Hiy hiy
thank you sister. I didn't click whistled songs for no reason. it's real easy to lose your way and get hurt real bad when you stray from the red road. Some of us don't know how to just get back there all easy. so we click on things like whistled songs, because the last time we felt strong and free and loved and full of hope was when we were real young. and these songs are the little morsels of light we need to stay alive sometimes. our world has changed so much so fast between generations. rules don't matter. Intention matters. Creator matters. we say Mauna, but others have so many names it's truly astounding. rules change, but as long as your intentions are clean and pure and not malicious.... Far better that an eagle whistle be broken, than we leave our own peoples to suffer without access to the medicines they need.

Your Sacred Items were taken away, stolen by the police and government officials. A Mide Elder asked "don't you think our Ceremonies are strong enough to withstand being recorded?" There are many out there who have no access to Traditions so it is good to see - 60's scoop, adopted out, Residential Schools, raised away from community etc.
Yes very healing. It help me top. Whistle has a power that helps people such as myself that can't get to powwow. And especially during this pandemic it lifts my spirit.

My mother was placed upon the drum as a baby by her uncle, unknowingly giving her to the drum, from that day forward she was allowed to stand behind the singers and sing. She carried this honor with her when she married her Siksika husband from Browning,Mt, she was also one of the first women to be allowed to dance socially with the men, she carried the name amongst the Siksika ( Takes the Bonnet)
I'm not particularly knowledgeable of this teaching so the women who sing with the men they are allowed due to a privilege or can any woman join in at any drum group as a Back up ?
I still say recording should have been stopped as the eagle whistle is blown. If someone seeks the knowledge as to "why"? Bring some tobacco to an elder be sure to present it with your right hand and open it for them. Then when they accept it be ready and listening not with pen and paper or recorder but with your ears. Then later you may write it down. Bending certain rules can be done but it must done with ceremony and the elders permission allowing us to show these sacred ways is ways we were told not to.
There's no such thing of a "rulebook" on whistle Blown the people that do the blowing are Veteran's & Sundancers, yes pay the drum with tobacco or money. 😎
Unless the Elder is the owner of the Drum or drum group, the tobacco is shared with the singers this always been like this for many years, many different tribes, bands, an Nation have different rules of whisle blown, Yes an No, on recording Video's, tape recorders, Today's cellphone recordings, everyone is trying to keep the memories alive, of a dear relative who's a whistle blower or drum group, BUT you do need to get Permission from the drum first, by flashing your whistle, there's a trick, if a drum don't do all the 4 push ups, more miss beat, they have to pay the Whistler... This was incredibly powerful, no surprise. I cannot stop the tears flowing when I attend Pow Wows &the music/dancing begins. As a non-Aboriginal with a FBI Mohawk partner, we respect whatever the rules are with the Nation we are visiting... We have found very different attitudes as the world has changed and much needs to be shared in order to inform the ignorant and asleep. All the power to traditions/heritage of each Nation, I thank you all for allowing me to see and hear what was once hidden. I prayed my whole life for such opportunities and for non-Aboriginals to respect and honour the Red Path

I would suggest u look into your own ancestry so u can see the parallels, as we are all family. It is important for everyone to understand their roots and carry on the tradition and tongues of their people and by sharing these things we can start reuniting and reestablishing these great traditions and restore the balance we so desperately need now - eastern band Cherokee/celtic

I have related to him for decades, read several books and saw the movie with Graham Greene playing the part. Thank you so much for your comment, and what timing, I saw a Shaman (Siberian Gypsy) May 5th (a 60th birthday pres. from sister,) she said the same thing; to look into my celtic past. Since I was 4yrs old I felt Native& never knew why, but in my 30s the answers came as I explored further along the spiritual path. I ended up living with aboriginals for yrs, then fell in love with a Mohawk. Too bad he could not follow the Red path but I learned a lot in my experiences with him. We learn the hard way, eh!! Thank you again for your keen insight as you were correct. Shaman said I have rejected my own blood (not the Irish side, just the English!!!), so I have much work to do in order to heal and become whole with the Native in cellular memory that I have always been so comfy with. Andrea Kelly I understand this struggle family. Being half myself in have had to try to come to terms with not just what this meant about my ancestry, but also where I belong. I'm definitely not white enough for whites to not inquire about my ethnicity (not that it bothers) but not native enough I'm not looked at suspiciously sometimes when I first meet people, because so many run around acting proud of something they actually have no real connection to, or participation in. But i guess we all struggle and face prejudice. It's definitely worth it. I can't imagine what I would be without it ♡

I have learned that many have issues with what we imagine is God, Mother Earth&Father Sky, The Creator, etc. Shaman made me think about that in my shattered state. I went back to something I learned in a creation story of Kitche Manitou and Sky Woman, this is Ontario Canada for me and Ojibwa nations feel familiar to me so now I feel stronger and more balanced. The male and female feel equal in power now, I am more solid on my healing path, without the confused Urban Aboriginal Mohawk in my life. The darkness he brought into my life was for a purpose and I thank him, it led me closer to the Light again.
Andrea Kelly yeah I understand that. It's difficult to watch others struggle with themselves. It can definitely fuel confusion in yourself. I've definitely been around those who seem angered by my choice to follow this path, and I see so much of that is them dealing with their own insecurity. Perhaps the anger is because I accept something they still hurt about. For a long time I was ashamed to acknowledge my Seminole line, because their history was lost in slavery. But I recently met a Seminole who told me that I shouldn't feel ashamed I wasn't taught. To honor my ancestors and their sacrifice for me and it really changed how I saw that part of me. Now I feel more compelled to self education instead of like I have some deep shame inside. Just as he effected u, perhaps u effected him. Just have faith it unfolds as it should and the creator will help him along. And feel grateful u no longer have that burden inside because it's as nasty one

I liked the song except for the back up female singers, they ruin songs for me. There are NDNs here complaining about you can't record a whistled song, I say B.S. to that. You can buy songs on cd at a powwow that are whistled, if that ain't hypocrisy then I don't know what is. For the record, I carry an eagle bone whistle, a disabled and retired Nez Perce NDN combat veteran.
OK I'm always hearing "DONT DO THIS DONT DO THAT" AT Powwows.. If you really wanted to follow all them rules then there would be NO POWWOW AT ALL!! Most of them dances where only done by certain people or societies, and was only for them to perform in the old days. So Chill, Tribes are losing their language and culture at a very fast rate and sometimes the only way to keep the songs and dances going is to record. Just my opinion sorry if I ruffled some feathers... Also on the Eagle whistle I was told by a Lakota Medicine Man that it was only blown for people who are sick and in doing so you give up some of your life for the person so they can get well. So every time you blow an eagle whistle you shorten your life.. Which is why it is only blown for very special occasions. That's what I was told anyway..
I know this is old but as an old man it takes me time to find worthy comments to say my 2 bits. If it is a public venue and recording was already vetted and on going it is up to the whistle user to NOT blow the whistle but instead could have honored with a feather drop. If we are at a public event dancing for money singing for money then its not the place for a whistle. There are other reasons to use the call between heaven and earth. Its an open communication with the creator and used very liberal due to many reasons unlike rattling the spirit and motivating peoples hearts and minds. It is the wind of life used to ask for judgment. My 2 cents. your elder speech no need for tobacco.

Jeez 49er songs in general are mixed with english because so many had lost their language BUT STILL HAD THEIR VOICE. btw, smoking weed isn't bad and helps keeps our kids off the bottle and the needle. The so called morality of demonizing a mostly harmless medicinal plant given to us by Creator is a european idea meant to discriminate against POC and the poor. And some of these TRADITIONS I hear people shouting and yelling about as they puff their chest and curl their lip are less than 100-150 years old and occurred after forced resettlement. Take a look at the NAC. Ho Chunks weren't eating peyote. The trade routes and exchange of religious and cultural ideas weren't opened up until forced relocation camps around the time the Ghost Dancer movement was winding down. Many of the people who promoted peyote religion were former Ghost Dancers. I grew up in that way, but we didn't do things in this way until very recently historically. It's important to remember that. I've seen people yell at GRIEVING people for not knowing to keep their seat in Devotions until they've been excused. My mother's coworkers from the casino coming to pay their respects. Compassion for grieving people is more important than our alleged traditions. Following a rule doesn't make you more indian. It's our SPIRIT that matters. It's important to remember that. Principles > Tradition BTW, those ribbon shirts I see look like they have fabrics from all over the world. Not from our immediate lands. But we wear them in ceremony don't we? And it's an honor to get gifted a nice pendleton isn't it? Pendleton isn't native owned my friends... But I am glad to see someone honored with a nice blanket. And those jingles are from chew cans. We can take ANYTHING in this Creation and make it our own. And things change, and we will change as well over time. The Spirit remains.

That's her way, their way, and it's wonderful that she/they are are holding on to a piece of what's theirs.

Really shouldnt have been recorded. But its here so not much to be done about. I have noticed quite a few comments about the filming of a whistled song...but also see comments about women not singing on a drum, but must sign behind the men. Ive seen several drums with women singers. So i suppose traditions are modified to match the times. Dont like it, but it is what it is.

My grandpa Ray Tahahwah was a well known singer from Chicago and I recall being at the drum at the American Indian Center since I can remember and how in awe I was at the power and beauty of it all...healing from all worlds and nations...aho!!

thing about culture is that it always evolves. but from my point of view, some things are meant to be kept as tradition and respected. ive sung at drums with women and i respect that. there is a place for everything but there is also the respect of things sacred that we need to honor, such as a whistles. ive always been shown to have all recorders, and cameras stopped and hats removed during such an event to respect the moment. videos like this show the evolution of first nations culture and also its movement away from respecting the sacredness of once highly honored traditions. pow wows have devolved into nothing more than a fierce competitions where tradition is stepped on in the name of the exchange of money.
ROSEBUD SIOUX is the first Tribe to do this after WW-2, and every other tribe, band, an Nation followed, YES, it does sound good to have women back up, Yeah, but remember a lot of woman's or girls have No interest in the Pow-wow World, Rodeo, street music😇😇✌️😎

My grandmother was native and I've never been to a powwow, but as soon as this COVID thing is over - and it WILL be over, we WILL beat it - I am going to as many as I can! This music resets your soul.
The thing is when ppl r recording this singing u never know when someone is going to blow the whistle so ppl say stop recording u don’t know when they r going blow the eagle bone whistle it’s unexpected
that's the simplest answer right there. I don't look at people funny over every little thing, but if you don't honor that flag and our warriors and you're running around goofing off, sitting down, eating, whatever... I do judge you. You were taught better than that and you know it. You know your mom was pinching your arm telling you to stop fidgeting and show some respect.

It's like the drum and singing becomes much bigger than it was before. Kinda like being lifted off the ground in a way.

I'm not joking I really pondered our culture yesterday after watching of few of these pow wows on here and what a culture they have .just so different from anything that ever came out of our own wee island. Even down to the greetings they perform when meeting someone from another tribe. I firmly believe that this is what a race , group or nation of people will produce when they organize themselves without the influence of the world which has corrupted everything on this planet cause man wanted to put a meter on everything he seen . The colour ,the diversity , the uniqueness the pride and so much more is something to behold and as I pondered my own nation and what we have become and become know for is our drinking and partying that I'm embarrassed to be Irish as I stand in awe and look at this nation of people but how sad it is that they cannot still live that way . It's heartbreaking.
The Irish were once a tribal nation whose people wore the colours of the clan they were born into. The church and England/Rome made our culture illegal, made our colours illegal, made our language illegal, made our stories illegal too. They gave us back the language and stories once they were cleansed of their power and christianized. Don't hate too hard our people we were victims like most of the colonized world, it just happened so much longer ago to Ireland than the rest of the world. What the colonizers did to the world they perfected on the Irish first. Be glad that the Native Peoples of America kept some of their culture alive for us to witness and remember that before the Roman Catholic atrocities the Irish were tribal people with our own songs and rhythms just like these beautiful Native American Indians. Also remember that whenever you see a cartoon leprechaun realize that it is a racist trope just noone remembers.

I'm glad they recorded the rest, teaches protocol and respect, for sure people and dancers are not standing or removing their hats around but when you do gou know it's a powerful moment, you have to remember the recording rule is fairly new, so when did this rule get adopted in our ceremonies? Because back in the day we didn't have recording equipment think about that

This is an important thing to share I Agree. But this type of powwow is necessarily sacred. It's not really a ritual. And it's so important we share ALL of us for anyone willing to seek us. So I understand the bending of things. Sometimes it serves a purpose as well. Our people traditionally adapt. This is an extension of that in a sense I feel

why cant women sing whenever they feel like it? Men do it all the time even when theyre not even walking the Red Road themselves. Women are sacred and should be able to sing whenever they want. The Creator loves everyone equally. its usually men that make up rules to scare people.
There lived and still lives a couple of eagles outside the city of Whitehorse, YT and they raised every year a few babies in a nest close to a pull-out outside of town. One year the city of Whitehorse decided to put a camera up on the eagle's nest to record the eagles 24 hours with the good intention to bring the eagles home to everybody who could not make his way to the nest. The next year the eagles built a nest across the highway from their old nest, inaccessible to any human being. They stayed there a couple of years and raised their babies in that new nest; when the third year came, the city of Whithehorse removed the camera from the old nest - the eagles returned that year to their old nest. Now, if you understand, why the eagles moved across the highway and came back after that camera was removed then you understand why a whistle song shouldn't be recorded.
Looks easy but it’s not especially when your really concentrating on getting that Exact rhythm the drum starts to seem and looks like before your eyes to move on its own and at the same time you can barely sing these Native American songs.

@NZT TZN first off a pow-wow is a celebration not a ceremony. Eagle bone whistles are only used in ceremony. It wouldn't matter if it was a metal whistle like most dancers use. There is much more to tell but this is not the place to talk of a eagle whistle. Find an elder, offer tobacco and ask your question.

My mother was placed upon the drum as a baby by her uncle, unknowingly giving her to the drum, from that day forward she was allowed to stand behind the singers and sing. She carried this honor with her when she married her Siksika husband from Browning,Mt, she was also one of the first women to be allowed to dance socially with the men, she carried the name amongst the Siksika ( Takes the Bonnet)
I'm not particularly knowledgeable of this teaching so the women who sing with the men they are allowed due to a privilege or can any woman join in at any drum group as a Back up ?

I still say recording should have been stopped as the eagle whistle is blown. If someone seeks the knowledge as to "why"? Bring some tobacco to an elder be sure to present it with your right hand and open it for them. Then when they accept it be ready and listening not with pen and paper or recorder but with your ears. Then later you may write it down. Bending certain rules can be done but it must done with ceremony and the elders permission allowing us to show these sacred ways is ways we were told not to.

Unless the Elder is the owner of the Drum or drum group, the tobacco is shared with the singers this always been like this for many years, many different tribes, bands, an Nation have different rules of whisle blown, Yes an No, on recording Video's, tape recorders, Today's cellphone recordings, everyone is trying to keep the memories alive, of a dear relative who's a whistle blower or drum group, BUT you do need to get Permission from the drum first, by flashing your whistle, there's a trick, if a drum don't do all the 4 push ups, more miss beat, they have to pay the Whistler... This was incredibly powerful, no surprise. I cannot stop the tears flowing when I attend Pow Wows &the music/dancing begins. As a non-Aboriginal with a FBI Mohawk partner, we respect whatever the rules are with the Nation we are visiting... We have found very different attitudes as the world has changed and much needs to be shared in order to inform the ignorant and asleep. All the power to traditions/heritage of each Nation, I thank you all for allowing me to see and hear what was once hidden. Since I was 4yrs old I felt Native& never knew why, but in my 30s the answers came as I explored further along the spiritual path. I ended up living with aboriginals for yrs, then fell in love with a Mohawk. Too bad he could not follow the Red path but I learned a lot in my experiences with him. We learn the hard way, eh!! Thank you again for your keen insight as you were correct. Shaman said I have rejected my own blood (not the Irish side, just the English!!!), so I have much work to do in order to heal and become whole with the Native in cellular memory that I have always been so comfy with. Andrea Kelly I understand this struggle family. Being half myself in have had to try to come to terms with not just what this meant about my ancestry, but also where I belong. I'm definitely not white enough for whites to not inquire about my ethnicity (not that it bothers) but not native enough I'm not looked at suspiciously sometimes when I first meet people, because so many run around acting proud of something they actually have no real connection to, or participation in. But i guess we all struggle and face prejudice. It's definitely worth it. I can't imagine what I would be without it ♡

Shaman made me think about that in my shattered state. I went back to something I learned in a creation story of Kitche Manitou and Sky Woman, this is Ontario Canada for me and Ojibwa nations feel familiar to me so now I feel stronger and more balanced. The male and female feel equal in power now, I am more solid on my healing path, without the confused Urban Aboriginal Mohawk in my life. The darkness he brought into my life was for a purpose and I thank him, it led me closer to the Light again.
Andrea Kelly yeah I understand that. It's difficult to watch others struggle with themselves. It can definitely fuel confusion in yourself. I've definitely been around those who seem angered by my choice to follow this path, and I see so much of that is them dealing with their own insecurity. Perhaps the anger is because I accept something they still hurt about. For a long time I was ashamed to acknowledge my Seminole line, because their history was lost in slavery. But I recently met a Seminole who told me that I shouldn't feel ashamed I wasn't taught. To honor my ancestors and their sacrifice for me and it really changed how I saw that part of me. Now I feel more compelled to self education instead of like I have some deep shame inside. Just as he effected u, perhaps u effected him. Just have faith it unfolds as it should and the creator will help him along. And feel grateful u no longer have that burden inside because it's as nasty one

I liked the song except for the back up female singers, they ruin songs for me. There are NDNs here complaining about you can't record a whistled song, I say B.S. to that. You can buy songs on cd at a powwow that are whistled, if that ain't hypocrisy then I don't know what is. For the record, I carry an eagle bone whistle, a disabled and retired Nez Perce NDN combat veteran.

OK I'm always hearing "DONT DO THIS DONT DO THAT" AT Powwows.. If you really wanted to follow all them rules then there would be NO POWWOW AT ALL!! Most of them dances where only done by certain people or societies, and was only for them to perform in the old days. So Chill, Tribes are losing their language and culture at a very fast rate and sometimes the only way to keep the songs and dances going is to record. Just my opinion sorry if I ruffled some feathers... Also on the Eagle whistle I was told by a Lakota Medicine Man that it was only blown for people who are sick and in doing so you give up some of your life for the person so they can get well. So every time you blow an eagle whistle you shorten your life.. Which is why it is only blown for very special occasions. That's what I was told anyway..

I know this is old but as an old man it takes me time to find worthy comments to say my 2 bits. If it is a public venue and recording was already vetted and on going it is up to the whistle user to NOT blow the whistle but instead could have honored with a feather drop. If we are at a public event dancing for money singing for money then its not the place for a whistle. There are other reasons to use the call between heaven and earth. Its an open communication with the creator and used very liberal due to many reasons unlike rattling the spirit and motivating peoples hearts and minds. It is the wind of life used to ask for judgment.

Jeez 49er songs in general are mixed with english because so many had lost their language BUT STILL HAD THEIR VOICE. btw, smoking weed isn't bad and helps keeps our kids off the bottle and the needle. The so called morality of demonizing a mostly harmless medicinal plant given to us by Creator is a european idea meant to discriminate against POC and the poor. And some of these TRADITIONS I hear people shouting and yelling about as they puff their chest and curl their lip are less than 100-150 years old and occurred after forced resettlement. Take a look at the NAC. Ho Chunks weren't eating peyote. The trade routes and exchange of religious and cultural ideas weren't opened up until forced relocation camps around the time the Ghost Dancer movement was winding down. Many of the people who promoted peyote religion were former Ghost Dancers. I grew up in that way, but we didn't do things in this way until very recently historically. It's important to remember that. I've seen people yell at GRIEVING people for not knowing to keep their seat in Devotions until they've been excused. My mother's coworkers from the casino coming to pay their respects. Compassion for grieving people is more important than our alleged traditions. Following a rule doesn't make you more indian. It's our SPIRIT that matters. It's important to remember that. Principles > Tradition BTW, those ribbon shirts I see look like they have fabrics from all over the world. Not from our immediate lands. But we wear them in ceremony don't we? And it's an honor to get gifted a nice pendleton isn't it? Pendleton isn't native owned my friends... But I am glad to see someone honored with a nice blanket. And those jingles are from chew cans. We can take ANYTHING in this Creation and make it our own. And things change, and we will change as well over time. The Spirit remains.

Really shouldnt have been recorded. But its here so not much to be done about. I have noticed quite a few comments about the filming of a whistled song...but also see comments about women not singing on a drum, but must sign behind the men. Ive seen several drums with women singers. So i suppose traditions are modified to match the times. Dont like it, but it is what it is.

My grandpa Ray Tahahwah was a well known singer from Chicago and I recall being at the drum at the American Indian Center since I can remember and how in awe I was at the power and beauty of it all...healing from all worlds and nations...aho!!

thing about culture is that it always evolves. but from my point of view, some things are meant to be kept as tradition and respected. ive sung at drums with women and i respect that. there is a place for everything but there is also the respect of things sacred that we need to honor, such as a whistles. ive always been shown to have all recorders, and cameras stopped and hats removed during such an event to respect the moment. videos like this show the evolution of first nations culture and also its movement away from respecting the sacredness of once highly honored traditions. pow wows have devolved into nothing more than a fierce competitions where tradition is stepped on in the name of the exchange of money.

I don't look at people funny over every little thing, but if you don't honor that flag and our warriors and you're running around goofing off, sitting down, eating, whatever... I do judge you. You were taught better than that and you know it. You know your mom was pinching your arm telling you to stop fidgeting and show some respect.

I'm not joking I really pondered our culture yesterday after watching of few of these pow wows on here and what a culture they have .just so different from anything that ever came out of our own wee island. Even down to the greetings they perform when meeting someone from another tribe. I firmly believe that this is what a race , group or nation of people will produce when they organize themselves without the influence of the world which has corrupted everything on this planet cause man wanted to put a meter on everything he seen . The colour ,the diversity , the uniqueness the pride and so much more is something to behold and as I pondered my own nation and what we have become and become know for is our drinking and partying that I'm embarrassed to be Irish as I stand in awe and look at this nation of people but how sad it is that they cannot still live that way . It's heartbreaking.
The Irish were once a tribal nation whose people wore the colours of the clan they were born into. The church and England/Rome made our culture illegal, made our colours illegal, made our language illegal, made our stories illegal too. They gave us back the language and stories once they were cleansed of their power and christianized. Don't hate too hard our people we were victims like most of the colonized world, it just happened so much longer ago to Ireland than the rest of the world. What the colonizers did to the world they perfected on the Irish first. Be glad that the Native Peoples of America kept some of their culture alive for us to witness and remember that before the Roman Catholic atrocities the Irish were tribal people with our own songs and rhythms just like these beautiful Native American Indians. Also remember that whenever you see a cartoon leprechaun realize that it is a racist trope just noone remembers.

Because back in the day we didn't have recording equipment think about that

it also use to be unheard of for a woman to sing when a whistle is blown...people try to stay as close to what was taught but some say, its a new era...new times...so now we have women singing whenever they feel like it...
why cant women sing whenever they feel like it? Men do it all the time even when theyre not even walking the Red Road themselves. Women are sacred and should be able to sing whenever they want. The Creator loves everyone equally. its usually men that make up rules to scare people.
There lived and still lives a couple of eagles outside the city of Whitehorse, YT and they raised every year a few babies in a nest close to a pull-out outside of town. One year the city of Whitehorse decided to put a camera up on the eagle's nest to record the eagles 24 hours with the good intention to bring the eagles home to everybody who could not make his way to the nest. The next year the eagles built a nest across the highway from their old nest, inaccessible to any human being. They stayed there a couple of years and raised their babies in that new nest; when the third year came, the city of Whithehorse removed the camera from the old nest - the eagles returned that year to their old nest. Now, if you understand, why the eagles moved across the highway and came back after that camera was removed then you understand why a whistle song shouldn't be recorded.
Looks easy but it’s not especially when your really concentrating on getting that Exact rhythm the drum starts to seem and looks like before your eyes to move on its own and at the same time you can barely sing these Native American songs.
Not sure where this is at, but at Montana powwows it's disrespectful to record something so powerful. Just saying!

@NZT TZN first off a pow-wow is a celebration not a ceremony. Eagle bone whistles are only used in ceremony. It wouldn't matter if it was a metal whistle like most dancers use. There is much more to tell but this is not the place to talk of a eagle whistle. Find an elder, offer tobacco and ask your question.
